I went to Ninigi, a cafe in the countryside of Oga, Akita Prefecture! I took the JR Ou Line to Oga Station (from Akita, ¥1,140, 50 min), then a bus to Toga–Funagawa (¥500-ish, 40 min) and walked the Namahage line to Godzilla Rock (Kanman-ji area, free, no booth). The rock is a 15 m sea stack that, from the right angle at the Kanman-ji cliff, reads as a lizard head—locals named it post-1954 film. The better walk is the mossy shore south of Toga: a 3 km coastal ledge where the basalt is black with Polypodium fern and the spray keeps a green fringe year-round. I started 06:30, had the cliff to myself, a fisherman nodded, no one else till 08:00. Combine with the Oga Shrine Namahage museum (¥550) if you want the folklore. Buses thin out after 16:00—last return to Oga Station ~17:30. Mistake: I drove a rental expecting cliff parking and found 6 spaces at Toga—bus from Oga Station is saner. Another: I came in February and the shore ice made the ledge lethal; Apr–Oct only for the moss walk. A tourist spot with no tourists, which I find quite puzzling. Ogata Village Sunflower Field Located right next to Hotel Sunrural Ogata, it seems to be maintained by the hotel and is likely a spot tailored for road-trippers. There are massive sunflower fields at both the front and back entrances, along with what looks like a cosmos flower field currently being planted nearby (plenty of parking lots nearby) As a pit stop connecting Hirosaki, Aomori, and Oga, Akita, I think it's definitely a spot worth visiting~ Right next to it is "Michi-no-Eki Ogata," a fantastic roadside station for shopping. It's packed with local specialties from Ogata Village and Akita Prefecture, and you can even grab some regional products from the Shirakami-Sanchi area here! By the way, I highly recommend road-trippers to check out the cherry blossom and rapeseed flower road in Ogata Village during the sakura season. It's the longest cherry blossom drive I've ever experienced! I went in June and he had grown to over 50kg, but he was still small and cute♡ I stayed at Morinaga Ryokan, which is a 3-minute walk from the station! During the day, it looks like an interesting rock formation by the sea, but at sunset it really comes alive. When the sun lines up behind it, the shape looks like Godzilla breathing fire, which makes it a super popular photo spot. The coastline around it adds to the atmosphere, with waves and open views that feel fresh and dramatic. It is easy to reach and does not take too much time to explore, making it a nice quick stop. In the coastal Oga region of Akita, this cultural color is especially rich and mysterious. NAMAHAGE visit homes in the villages on New Year's Eve, where hosts offer food and respectfully listen to the deities' teachings. The entire Oga Peninsula is imbued with a mysterious charm, as if marinated in faith, making it particularly captivating. Of course, although the peninsula isn't large, it boasts absolutely photogenic sea views and a wild, cheerful fishing culture, making it well worth a visit and exploration. Ginzan Onsen – A pure and elegant experience by day; a dazzling spectacle by night, creating unforgettable memories. ❣️Booking the hotel six months in advance allowed me to experience both atmospheres simultaneously. ❣️The hotel, "Oyakuya," was affordable yet offered a high-quality experience, surprisingly even including a shower! 👍 Kakunodate-cho Samurai Residences – Known as the "Little Kyoto of Oku," the scenery along the way offered a different kind of sensual experience than typical autumn days. Oga-mayama Heritage Museum – Experience the traditional Akita "Namahagi" culture; hidden beneath the demon masks lies a gentle blessing for every household. Yama-dera Temple – The "1015" steps challenge; snowflakes fell on the mountain forest, each step offering a different view, with even more moving moments at the top. ❣️During the snow season, wear shoes with good grip or install crampons, as the area is covered in condensation and ice.
