Nizwa Fort, located in central Oman, is one of the country's iconic symbols of history and culture. Built in the 17th century by the ruling authority of the time, its purpose was to protect the region from foreign invasions. The architecture of this fort is truly unique, blending traditional Omani construction techniques with defensive structures. Stepping inside, you can feel the rich historical atmosphere, with exhibits showcasing the lifestyle, weaponry, and defensive features of the era. What impressed me the most was the magnificent round tower. You can climb to the top of the tower and enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire Nizwa city.

Oman is an amazing country. By law, modern buildings are prohibited, giving you the constant feeling of being in the setting of the animated film "Aladdin." Rent a car. For a first visit, a regular car will suffice unless you plan to tackle mountains or sands on your own (which, by the way, is prohibited by rental rules even for 4WD vehicles). Distances are vast, and public transport is virtually non-existent. Allocate a couple of days to explore the city, visit the old town of Nizwa, and definitely venture into the desert (on the edge of the desert, you can find Bedouin camps on the map—each of them can organize a tour into the sands or camel rides for you). If desired, you can also arrange a seaside vacation—diving with turtles, dolphin watching, etc. There are both individual and group tours available. If you visit during the right season, you can witness baby turtles hatching (usually from April to July, but it's best to confirm). Strolling around the city is better in the evening; firstly, the heat subsides, and secondly, the city lights up beautifully. Visit the "Rozna" restaurant near the airport. The restaurant is designed like a fortress, and the menu features authentic Omani dishes. I highly recommend the goat meat, slow-cooked for two days in an earthen oven.

Allow time for stops at viewpoints. ✔️By taxi: You can arrange a full-day trip with a taxi driver. The cost will be high, but for a group of 3-4 people, it might be economical. ✔️Book a tour. ❗️What to bring with you? 1. Cash in Omani Rials (OMR). 2. A hat and sunscreen: The sun in the mountain valley can be even stronger than on the coast. 3. Comfortable shoes: You'll be walking a lot through forts and the market, where the ground is uneven. 4. Ideal season: October to March. Best to avoid: June to August. It's extremely hot (easily +45°C or higher). The trip can be challenging, especially with children. Nizwa is a must-visit for anyone wanting to understand Oman. It's a day spent in another era, surrounded by the scents of frankincense, leather, and spices, under the shadow of imposing forts. Since I couldn’t find much information about Sur, I only allocated one day there, and one day for Nizwa as well. Finally, from Nizwa, I returned to Abu Dhabi, while he returned to Muscat. Sur also has beautiful seaside promenades, and you can visit the small Sur Fort (free entry). For desert clothing, try to wear light colors. Whether long skirts, short skirts, or white, they all photograph well, especially paired with a vibrant headscarf 🧕❤️
