My first desert hike was on a beginner-friendly one-day route—an 8 km round trip, aiming for a high sand dune with a panoramic view of Swan Lake. I was pretty excited when I first stepped onto the sand, but after walking one kilometer, the smile faded. Climbing uphill, every step slipped halfway back, and my heart rate shot up to 160; going downhill was a blast, sinking into the soft sand felt like stepping on cotton. The guide called this "desert unloading," and after a day, it’s equivalent to walking 20 km on flat ground. Photo 1️⃣ Overlooking Swan Lake from the top of the high sand dune—after a 40-minute climb, I finally reached the summit. Swan Lake lay quietly in the middle of the golden sea of sand, with reeds swaying in the breeze by the shore. Sitting on the sand ridge, sipping water, the wind blew the sand into beautiful ripples. In northern China lies the autonomous region of Ningxia which mostly characterised by sweeping sand dunes that go on for miles! I’ve been twice (January and June). In January, most of the desert and fresh water is completely frozen over which is quite surreal for a desert. 4X4 cars were able to drive over the oasis because it was so solidly frozen. In the summer, it can become quite warm but still comfortable enough to camp overnight. There are camel rides available although we chose to hike. The Great Wall of China and the Yellow River is a place that you can’t miss if you are in the city of Zhongwei. The recommended sightseeing time is half an hour or maximum one hour. This place is an impressive archeological gem, its facade is beautiful and its reconstruction from ruin was a total success. Try not to miss out the sunset as this Great Wall has a great panoramic view to the Yellow river. Plan accordingly to get a good spot to take some photographs. Take a sleeper train to the little-travelled city of Yinchuan in Ningxia and explore China’s main wine region, where you can actually find drinkable wine! (Our goal of the trip). The main wineries are Xige and Silver Heights, which also have accommodation. Ningxia also has ancient ruins to explore (Western Xia Tombs and Helanshan) as well as the Tengger Desert where you can sleep in glamping yurts. In the distant Gansu, the most impressive impression is the slightly deserted Gobi Desert in the northwest. Although, I can't say exactly what the Gobi Desert and the Gobi Desert really look like. Just came to Gansu to start from Lanzhou, and showed me a colorful Gansu, because Gansu's geographical span is large, it is actually richer than I expected. This trip will not go too far into the conventional scenic spot, another kind goes deep into Gansu, but today there is still a chance to have a quick contact with the Tengger Desert.

In Qingtongxia City, Wuzhong, Ningxia, there is a rare Qing dynasty official residence complex in Northwest China, known as "Ningxia’s first mansion." It was the official residence of Dong Fuxiang, a late Qing general and governor of Gansu. It is now rated a national 4A-level attraction and was listed as a national protected site in the sixth batch in 2006. 🖼️ What’s the story behind this mansion❓ 🔸 The owner, Dong Fuxiang (1840–1908), courtesy name Xingwu, was from Guyuan, Gansu (now part of Ningxia) during the Qing dynasty. He held the rank of governor with the honorary title of minister. He started as a militia leader, later followed Zuo Zongtang to help reclaim Xinjiang; in 1900, he led the Gansu army against the Eight-Nation Alliance but was dismissed and sent home after the Boxer Rebellion. 🔸 Construction of the mansion began in 1902 and took three years to complete. It originally consisted of a moat, outer city, and inner city. Today, mainly the inner city and courtyard sections remain. 🏠 What does it look like inside❓ ✅ The architecture follows a "three routes, six courtyards" layout, symmetrically arranged along the central courtyard axis, with 116 rooms in the residence. The brick and wood carvings are exquisite. On the way to Helan Mountain Nature Reserve, we unexpectedly came across the Ming Great Wall - Diquan beacon tower, which made up for some of the disappointment. Diquan beacon tower is an important part of the Ming Great Wall defense system. As an ancient military signal tower, it, together with the surrounding Great Wall walls, formed a military defense line at the foot of Helan Mountain. The dishes are grown in their own garden, fresh and cheap. ⚠️ It’s best to go in the morning when the light is good and there are fewer people. After the visit, take a walk in the nearby forest. The air is especially fresh. The whole trip, including tickets and food, costs just over 100 yuan, and kids learn an amazing legend. 5️⃣ Lhasa | Tibet Taking kids to Lhasa sounds intimidating, but summer is actually a good time because of long days and good sunshine. If your child is older (8+ years) and physically fit, I highly recommend Namtso Lake. ⏰ Leave in the morning. The breeze by the lake is cool, the water unbelievably blue. Kids see the “sea” connected to snow-capped mountains and run around shouting with joy. 📍 Remember not to let kids run too fast. Take it easy at high altitude and bring chocolate for energy. If your child is younger, just stay in the city. Visit the Potala Palace during the day. Kids will be curious about the butter lamps and murals, asking “What is this?” 🍜 In the afternoon, sit outside Jokhang Temple, drink sweet tea, and watch people prostrating. These scenes teach kids about faith and perseverance better than any lecture. ⚠️ Lhasa is expensive, but its unique experiences and scenery are worth the cost. 6️⃣ Tongren | Guizhou Fanjing Mountain is Guizhou’s “green lung.” Summer is perfect because it’s cool enough to need a jacket. ⏰ Arrive before 8 AM at the foot of the mountain. Otherwise, cable car lines can take 1–2 hours. Once on the cable car, clouds float right beside you, making kids feel like they’re on a plane. 📍 The climb called “Ten Thousand Steps Cloud Ladder” is a physical challenge, but the mushroom rocks and red cloud golden summit are so unique kids respond with “wow” the whole way. ⚠️ Parents, note the steps near the red cloud golden summit are steep. If your child is small or timid, don’t force it. Play on the mushroom rock platform and take photos instead. 🍜 After descending, find a restaurant at the foot to eat sour fish soup. It’s tangy and spicy—kids will love it. 7️⃣ Xianyang | Shaanxi Xianyang is just one high-speed train stop from Xi’an but costs half as much and hides many treasures. For a history lesson with kids, Qianling Mausoleum is an excellent choice. 📍 Qianling is the joint tomb of Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu Zetian. The grandeur of the mausoleum is palpable standing on the sacred path. Kids staring at the blank stele asking “Why no words?” can spark a long conversation. If heavy history isn’t your thing, visit Yuanjia Village’s Guanzhong Impression Experience. 🍜 It’s full of Guanzhong snacks like oil-splashed noodles, lamb stew with bread, and cold noodles. You can eat your fill for just a dozen yuan. Kids can watch artisans making candy and grinding tofu, and even try it themselves. 📍 Stay overnight in a guesthouse in Yuanjia Village to avoid back-and-forth travel. The saved transport money can be spent on food. 8️⃣ Fangchenggang | Guangxi If your child loves playing in sand and water, skip the overpriced Sanya beaches. Fangchenggang’s beaches are free and fun. 📍 Navigate directly to Leshan Ancient Fishing Village. It’s less crowded, with fine sand. At low tide, you can dig for little crabs in the mudflats. Kids can dig for an hour without looking up. ⏰ Go into the sea after 4:30 PM. It’s not sunny, the water is warm, and the waves are gentle. Kids play with water guns and build sandcastles until they don’t want to leave. 🍜 Have seafood for dinner in the fishing village. It’s all caught fresh that day and much cheaper than in the city. 🚄 It’s a 1.5-hour high-speed train ride from Nanning, convenient travel. The money saved on flights can pay for several seafood feasts. Honestly, you don’t have to squeeze into those “trendy” cities for summer family trips. Pick a weekend, choose a place, spend a few hundred, and let your kids find joy in nature and real life. It’s way more worthwhile than waiting two hours in line for one minute at an amusement park.

When it comes to summer escapes, most people think of mountains or water activities. But the places I’m about to share will change your perspective—they’re tucked away in the corners of “furnace” provinces or not even on typical travel lists. Just 2–3 hours by high-speed train, cheaper than traveling out of the province, and so uncrowded you can have the place to yourself. Best of all, it’s truly cool, with temperatures 7 to 8 degrees lower than the city. 01 Nanning | Guangxi Arriving in Nanning at 3 PM, the heat hits you hard. But if you head 50 km northeast to the foot of Daming Mountain, the temperature drops to 25℃. Let me take you to a lesser-known spot: Fubo Temple. Park at the foot of the mountain and climb the stone steps. Century-old trees line both sides, their shade completely covering the path. Occasionally, beams of light hit the moss, making it feel like you’re walking on patches of light. The temple is small and empty. Sitting on the doorstep, the mountain breeze cools your sweat instantly. On the way back to the city, detour to Zhongshan Road. Skip the main street and head into the alleys to find Huang A-Po rice dumplings. 🍜 Their rice dumpling skins are steamed fresh from rice slurry, so slippery chopsticks can barely hold them. The filling has water chestnuts and pork, dipped in yellow peel sauce, tangy and sweet, very appetizing. ⚠️ The temple gets dark after 4 PM, so it’s best to visit in the morning or evening. 02 Taizhou | Zhejiang The summer escape king of eastern Zhejiang isn’t Moganshan, it’s Taizhou. Which to choose, Tiantai Mountain or Shenxianju? I’ll decide for you. If you have only one day, go straight to Shenxianju. 🚄 Get off at Taizhou station and take a taxi to the south gate of the scenic area, about 30 minutes. Take the cable car up the mountain. The mountaintop walkway hangs on the cliff edge. Walking it makes your legs weak, but the strong wind makes it hard to stand still, cool enough to wear a light jacket. The whole route takes about 3 hours with few steps, so it’s suitable for elderly and children. If you have more time, visit Tiantai Mountain the next day. Guoqing Temple has free admission. The Sui Dynasty pagoda and thousand-year-old camphor tree stand there. Sitting on the temple steps, you can hear the wind ringing the copper bells under the eaves. In the evening, head to Taizhou city. Skip climbing the city wall and find a cold drink shop by East Lake. Order a cup of “herbal jelly” with mint flavor. One bowl will revive you. 🍜 At night, go to Ziyang Street. If the seaweed pancake line is too long, skip it. Aunt Wang’s plum blossom cake is good—crispy outside, sticky inside. 03 Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture | Xinjiang Summer in Changji has such a big temperature difference between day and night that you wear short sleeves by day and a windbreaker at night. Jiangbulake is my favorite wheat field—not flat plains, but on slopes. When the wind blows, the wheat waves roll from the foot to the top of the mountain. ⚠️ The wheat is green in July and August. Avoid the crowded viewing platform. Walk deeper into the fields, find a slope to sit on, with snow-capped mountains behind and green waves ahead. Any photo looks like wallpaper. Tianshan Tianchi is famous, but I find Wucaiwan more exciting. Arrive at 5 PM. The sunlight turns the earth forest red, yellow, and brown in layers. Walking in the ravine feels like entering a giant palette. 🌄 Evening light is best, but don’t dawdle if you need to catch the last bus back to the city. Taxis can take half an hour to arrive. 🍜 At night, go to Changji’s Hui snack street. Pepper chicken with Da Wusu beer—crispy skin, tender meat, spicy enough to make you suck your tongue. 04 Chizhou | Anhui Chizhou isn’t muggy in summer because Mount Jiuhua blocks the heat. Jiuhua’s scenery is divided into front and back mountains. The front has more temples; the back is wilder. For a cool escape, head straight to the back mountain. ⏰ Get up at 5 AM and take the cable car to the summit to watch the sunrise. Clouds roll beneath your feet, and the wind is so cold you’ll want to wrap your jacket tight. After the sunrise, walk down past the Flesh Body Hall. Don’t follow the crowd; turn into the nearby stone path to Phoenix Pine. This ancient pine is over a thousand years old, its branches spread like a phoenix’s wings. Sit on the stone under the tree, eat a meat bun you brought, and sip hot tea from your thermos. So comfortable you won’t want to move. ⚠️ Water is sold on the mountain at double the price. Bring two bottles yourself. 🍜 After descending, go to “Old Guichi” in Chizhou city for a bowl of Anqing fried noodles. The noodles are chewy with bean sprouts and shredded pork, full of wok flavor. 05 Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture | Sichuan Aba is a summer cooling gem, with temperatures mostly between 15–25℃. To save energy, choose Jiuzhaigou; if you love hiking, choose Siguniang Mountain; if you want to see calcified pools, choose Huanglong. But if you have only three days, here’s my suggestion: Day 1, arrive at Jiuzhaigou but don’t enter the valley. First, explore “Bianbian Street” at the entrance and buy a light windbreaker because the mountain temperature varies greatly. Day 2, enter Jiuzhaigou early, take the sightseeing bus to the primeval forest, and walk downhill. The Five-Color Pool and Panda Lake are best seen in the afternoon light. ⚠️ Don’t eat lunch at Nuorilang central station—it’s expensive and bad. Bring self-heating rice. On Day 3, head to Huanglong early, take the cable car up and walk down, about 4 hours total. If traveling with family, bring a hiking pole because Huanglong has many steps. 🍜 At night, return to Chuanzhusi town and find a yak meat hot pot. The broth has herbs, the meat is tender without gamey taste. A bowl of soup will warm you up. 06 Jining | Shandong Summer in Jining, Weishan Lake is a natural air conditioner. The Weishan Lake scenic area has two entrances. At the main entrance, take a boat tour. To the west, there’s a wetland boardwalk so quiet you can hear birds flapping in the reeds. ⏰ Go at 4 PM. The sunlight turns the lake surface golden. The boatman rows, lotus flowers brush your hand. Picking one is fined, but smelling is allowed. On the way back, visit Qufu. At the Confucius Temple in the Ming ancient city, after 6 PM when tourists leave, walk in the stele forest. The stone steps are polished shiny, and shadows of ancient cypresses fall on the ground like an ink painting. 🍜 Don’t buy “Confucius Mansion pastries” in Qufu—they’re too sweet in tourist gift boxes. Go to “Lucheng Renjia” by the old city wall and order braised pork with rice. The pork belly is so tender it falls off the bone, served with rice and marinated egg, soft and sticky in every bite. ⚠️ The lotus flowers at Weishan Lake bloom best from late July to early August. Don’t miss it. 07 Shangrao | Jiangxi Summer in Shangrao, Sanqing Mountain is the main attraction, but I think Wuyuan is underrated. If you have two days, here’s the plan: Day 1, go to Huangling. Don’t just go for the autumn drying. In summer, Huangling’s terraced fields are all green. Walking on Tianjie Street, old Hui-style houses line both sides. Occasionally, a breeze passes through, making it cool. ⏰ At 5:30 PM, go to the top floor of the drying workshop to watch the sunset dye the whole village warm orange. Light filters through the eaves, casting spots on the bluestone road—great for photos. Day 2, go to Jiangwan in the morning. After visiting the old ancestral hall, turn to the back mountain trail. Bamboo forests line both sides, and the wind rustles the leaves like natural white noise. ⚠️ Sanqing Mountain has many steps. If your legs aren’t strong, take the cable car up and down. 🍜 Wuyuan’s Qingming cakes are delicious. Green-skinned glutinous rice wraps bamboo shoots and meat. You can buy them at roadside stalls. 08 Yinchuan | Ningxia Yinchuan is dry and hot in summer, but if you head toward Helan Mountain, it’s cool enough to wear a jacket. At Helan Mountain Rock Art Scenic Area, the wind is so strong your hat might blow off. Sitting in front of the rock art, looking at lines drawn thousands of years ago, time seems to stretch. ⏰ Arrive at 4 PM. The slanting sunlight makes the stone carvings especially clear. On the way back, visit the Western Xia tombs. Don’t dismiss the mounds as boring. Riding an electric cart through the wilderness, the sky is high and blue, and the grass grows close to the ground, blown by the wind, creating a desolate beauty. 🍜 At night in Yinchuan city, go to “Guoqiang Hand Grab” for hand-grabbed lamb. Dip it in vinegar and garlic. The meat is tender with no fibers. Pair it with a bowl of eight-treasure tea to cut the richness. ⚠️ Helan Mountain Rock Art Scenic Area is windy.
