2026 Mongolia Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in February)

Our road trip through Mongolia lasted 8 days, starting on May 1st with crossing the border at the village of Khankh. The plan was as follows: travel through Khankh, Khatgal, Murun, Kharkhorin, Dalanzadgad, Tsagaan Suvarga, Ulaanbaatar, Darkhan, and return to Russia via Kyakhta. We spent the night by Lake Khövsgöl. Cold and beautiful. Almost all our nights were spent in the car. Next, in Kharkhorin, I highly recommend visiting the famous Erdene Zuu Monastery, founded in 1586. It is one of the most significant cultural and historical sites in Mongolia. Then we stayed overnight in Tsagaan Suvarga, a place known for its unique natural formations, vibrant colors, and unusual rock shapes. Our dream was to climb the Khongoryn Els sand dunes and watch the sunrise there. The dunes are massive sand formations, one of Mongolia's most famous natural attractions. These dunes reach heights of up to 800 meters and stretch for tens of kilometers, creating a stunning landscape. The shifting sands produce an incredible sound, indescribable, as if the Gobi itself is singing. Unfortunately, we couldn't witness the sunrise; it came along with a sandstorm. Also, be sure to visit the Bayanzag Canyon, known as the "Flaming Cliffs." It truly looks like it's ablaze under the sunset. And of course, take a stroll through Ulaanbaatar, enjoy the local cuisine, see the dinosaurs, and the statue of Genghis Khan. The journey was unforgettable. Words cannot express how beautiful Mongolia's nature is. For a long time, closing my eyes, I will see the starry night sky over the Gobi. Wishing you wonderful travels.

Have you ever wondered where people go in Mongolia? This trip, just the two of us, was a very private one. It was just the two of us on the entire tour! It wasn't the peak season, but it was incredibly memorable! - No showers for five days - Pounding horse meat (dried meat) for hours before cooking - Traveling in the Gobi Desert without seeing any roads (I recommend getting a local guide if you're going on your own, as the signs aren't in English!) Some routes don't even have roads. But that's where the excitement lies, lol. - Goat herding, sheep herding, and get up close and personal with deer, camels, and horses! - Encountered a strange sea storm, lol. - Sheared sheep. - And a whole host of other things you wouldn't find anywhere else. Lake Khövsgöl is called a relative of Lake Baikal, as both are of tectonic origin. The road to the lake and the border village is well paved. It's easily accessible from Irkutsk in a day by car.

Mongolia is a vast and huge country and some places are not easy to reach but here is the least of places that can be easily visited from Ulaanbaatar: 1. Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex - the biggest statue of the man on a horse in the world. Here you can even climb a statue and see the beautiful nature a scenery. Plus you can try to hold and eagle there or ride a camel as well. 2. Terelj National Park - highly recommend to stay there in a tent named Ger for a night. The weather in September and early October is crisp but comfortable — warm during the day and chilly at night — making it ideal for outdoor adventures. I spent most of my time on the central steppe, where herds of horses, yaks, and sheep were still grazing before winter. The light was magical, especially at sunrise and sunset, when the grasslands seemed to glow. Staying in a ger (yurt) felt extra cozy at this time of year, with a small stove keeping the inside warm as the temperature dropped outside. Hello✨ This time, I went on a trip to Mongolia🇲🇳! Expansive grasslands, a night sky filled with the Milky Way, and warm hot springs... It truly felt like a scene from a movie during these 3 nights and 4 days😍. 📍DAY 1 – Terelj National Park 🏞️ As soon as we arrived in Mongolia, we met our driver and guide and headed to Terelj National Park. The endless grassland scenery along the way had us constantly saying, "Wow... Amazing," even from inside the car🙈💚. At Terelj, we visited the Chinggis Khan Statue, Turtle Rock, and the Equestrian Statue, and even got to experience horseback riding🐴! We ended the day at the camp, gazing at a sky full of stars. The beauty was so overwhelming that no photo could truly capture the moment🌌. 📍DAY 2 – Mini Desert 🏜️ On the second day, we set off for the desert! 🚐 Although the journey took about 5–6 hours, the ever-changing scenery outside the window kept us entertained. When we arrived at the mini desert, it was like stepping into another world✨. We climbed and slid down the sand dunes, tried sand sledding, and enjoyed stargazing under the night sky🌠. That night, the Milky Way was the most stunning I’ve ever seen…! 📍DAY 3 – Tsenkher Hot Springs♨️ On the third day, we drove across the grasslands to reach Tsenkher Hot Springs✨. The journey was far from boring, thanks to the endless grasslands and picturesque flocks of sheep🐑💨. At the hot springs, soaking in warm water while admiring the open grassland scenery was the perfect way to relieve all the fatigue from the trip🛁. Nomadic families in Mongolia nowadays combine their historical roots with modern reality and although they still living in their way they became much closer to modern life. In Mongolia you can visit such nomadic families and get to know their culture and traditions: what they eat, how their houses look like, how they train eagles and run horses and camels, you can listen to their traditional songs and see their games and even try the traditional clothes! This is a highly recommended thing to do in Mongolia! How to find them if you are staying in Ulaan Bataar?
