Kani Doraku's dinner sets hover around ¥6,000 to ¥8,000. Gorgeous, yes. But lunch? Same kitchen, same Hokkaido crab, same meticulous prep—starting at just ¥3,520. That's nearly half the price for the exact same show. The atmosphere - Tatami seats, sunken tables, window views of the Dotonbori river chaos and crowd —it’s theatrical in that quiet, very Japanese way. The servers glided around with gentle precision, and within minutes, my table became a stage. Then the parade began. Chilled legs that tasted like ocean candy. Steaming paper hot pot with broth so rich I wanted to bottle it. Grilled crab releasing that smoky, buttery perfume. Tempura so light it crackled. And the grand finale: that clay pot of crab rice, infused with umami, which you pour dashi over for a second life as comforting chazuke. Plus crab chawanmushi, crab sushi, crab miso soup—and yuzu sorbet to reset your soul. Was it pricey? Sure. Did I care? Not a yen. Because some meals aren't about "value." They're about surrendering to pure, messy, buttery indulgence—cracking shells, scraping every shred, and exchanging that silent "this is insane" look across the table. So when you're under that neon claw, asking yourself "should I?"—stop debating. Splurge. Just do it at lunch. Your taste buds won't know the difference. Your wallet definitely will. I'll begin my gastronomic story with a little warning 😂 If you're strolling through Nishiki Market in Kyoto and someone hands you some cute, airy green or white thing, ask first what it is. I beg you. 😂 Because I didn't ask. Japan. Market. People are given something to try. Well, what about me? Of course, I tried it! 😂 I calmly took the thing... and started eating it. And only later did I realize it was... SOAP. 🧼😂 Yes, yes. Real foaming hand soap. And the first photo shows that very historic moment, when I still have no idea that instead of a Japanese delicacy, I'm tasting hand soap. 🤣 After that incident, I became much more attentive to Japanese tastings. But aside from my discovery of soap, Nishiki is a true paradise for those who love to try everything. Here you can have a real gastronomic stroll and order small portions of everything: 🦪 Oysters and other seafood 🦀 Crab 🐙 Octopus and seafood skewers 🥒 Japanese pickles 🥟 Gyoza 🥚 Japanese omelette 🍵 Matcha and matcha sweets 🍡 Mochi 🥞 Mini dorayaki and other Japanese desserts There are also a huge number of shops selling tea, spices, tableware, chopsticks, and Japanese products. You can just walk around, look around, and constantly find something new. And there's one important thing: 👇 At Nishiki, it's not customary to eat while strolling through the market. But everything is very conveniently organized: many vendors have special areas where you can stop, sit, and calmly eat what you've bought. So, you buy → go to a special area → eat → go on to find more goodies. And that's what I especially liked. You don't have to sit down at a restaurant and order a large portion. You can try many different Japanese things at once, take a little bit, and choose your favorites. So if you're in Kyoto, I would definitely make time for Nishiki Market. Just please... I took the AFROSIYOB, Uzbekistan's high-speed train, from Samarkand to Tashkent. Manufactured by Talgo of Spain, this high-speed train has a top speed of 250 km/h. It connects Tashkent and Samarkand in approximately 2 hours and 10-30 minutes. If you're traveling between cities in Uzbekistan, this is a train everyone wants to ride at least once! 🚄① Check tickets on the booking date! AFROSIYOB is very popular, and tickets often sell out almost immediately upon booking opening. However, don't give up immediately even if it's fully booked! ✨ Cancellations can create vacancies, so checking frequently might allow you to secure a ticket. If you're still worried, you can book the SHARQ as a backup and change to the AFROSIYOB later if a seat becomes available. SHARQ is cancellation-free, but please note that there are fees for refunds. 💺② Spacious and Comfortable Even in Economy Class! I flew in economy class this time, but it was more spacious than I expected. The seats were wide, and the train was clean. For a journey of about 2 hours, economy class was perfectly comfortable. 🥐③ Tea and Snack Service Between Samarkand and Tashkent, drinks such as tea and bread, and snacks were served. Furthermore, there was also a sales service on board. You can also purchase drinks and snacks, so the approximately 2-hour journey flew by. *Please note that service details may vary depending on the section and train. ⌛️④ Travel Time is Approximately 2 Hours and 20 Minutes The journey between Tashkent and Samarkand takes approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes on the AFROSIYOB. As departure time approaches, check the electronic display boards and platform yourself. 👜⑥ Baggage check upon entering the station There is a baggage check upon entering the station, so it's recommended to arrive at the station with some time to spare, rather than at the last minute. 🎫⑦ Fares are higher than regular trains AFROSIYOB fares are higher than typical Uzbek train fares. However, it allows for quick travel between cities, making it a convenient option for travelers who want to save travel time! The biggest challenge with AFROSIYOB is that tickets are difficult to obtain. It's recommended to check reservations early and keep checking for availability even if it's fully booked. The hotel's English proficiency is really high, so there's no need to worry even if you don't speak any Japanese~ 🛏️ Room Experience The 1.2m twin beds are perfect; when pushed together, they easily accommodate one adult and two kids! As I’ve mentioned in a few previous posts, traveling outside of major cities in Japan as a vegan can be very challenging, so advance planning is essential. You can't wing it if you want to be fed! During a previous work trip to Seki, I spent over eight hours trying to find decent meal options. Since my latest trip was planned at the last minute, I wanted to share my go-to emergency "wing-it" meal options from convenience stores, which are open 24/7 across Japan: · instant noodles 🍜: there are very few vegan options, and all widely available ones happen to be Korean! The chili ones I picked this time are apparently produced by BTS🕺 · any frozen vegetables 🥦🧊 you want. In Japan, all hotels have both boiling water and microwaves! And found a couple of vegan ice bars! Tip: the chili noodles would have been perfect with some vegan cheese🧀 Many supermarkets now carry them, but never seen any in convenience stores. I’ve been to Japan three times, and my husband has been five times. We absolutely adore this country—the culture, the language, and the traditions. We are always ready to go back again and again. My husband’s love for Japan started in childhood through video games, and he eventually passed that passion on to me. We’ve gained a lot of experience traveling across this country, so I wanted to share some insights with all of you fellow Japan enthusiasts. Here are my personal itinerary tips for your first trip: 1. Start your journey in Osaka. It’s a fantastic city with its own pace and history. Of course, I recommend visiting the most popular tourist spots: · Dotonbori · Osaka Castle · Universal Studios · Umeda Sky Building · Namba Yasaka Jinja But there are also places many people miss: · The aquarium, and the nearby Ferris wheel. It’s best to go at sunset. · Tsutenkaku. Don't forget to check out the retro arcade games and try some traditional archery. 2. Osaka is a very convenient base for visiting neighboring cities: · Kyoto: Spend at least two days there. You can rent bicycles to explore the city that way. · Nara: The famous spot where deer roam freely among people, begging for treats. · Kobe: Definitely go there to spend a day at an onsen—traditional hot springs. There is a huge variety of them there. 3. After that, you can take the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Tokyo. I think I’ll make separate posts later about what to do in Tokyo. 4. For subsequent trips, choose neighboring prefectures. Trust me, you’ll love the quiet life and the local festivals, just like we did. The shops won't be crowded, especially with tourists. You won’t have to wait in line to eat at a restaurant. Life in the prefectures flows just like in the movie "Perfect Days." On our last trip, we lived in the city of Misato in Saitama Prefecture for an entire month. These smaller cities have absolutely everything Tokyo has, but everything is much more accessible and convenient. We stayed with friends and had our own bikes to get to nearby towns. We all went together to local events like the Anpanman Show (a free kids' show with popular characters) and the Yashio Hanabi Festival (a fireworks festival). 5. You must visit Kawaguchiko to see Mount Fuji in all its glory. We went in January when the weather was incredibly clear, and we thoroughly enjoyed the local beauty. 6. You will also love the city of Yokohama. It’s not far from Tokyo. I suggest staying there for a couple of days and using it as a base to visit nearby places like Kamakura—a very popular spot for tourists. #localdiscoveries 🍤 Found a tiny Kyoto tempura spot serving a 15-color tendon. Just a short walk from Yasaka Shrine, Tendon Restaurant Loosen Up! is a small restaurant with fewer than 12 seats, but its signature Hannari Tendon is anything but ordinary. The bowl comes with 15 different bite-sized tempura pieces, including shrimp, squid, scallop, fish, chicken, namafu, eggplant, burdock root, pumpkin, myoga, pickled ginger, cream cheese, shiitake mushroom and paprika. It was fun getting a little bit of everything in one bowl, and the tempura was light and crisp without feeling greasy. The sauce was flavorful but not overly sweet, which we appreciated. The exact ingredients can also change with the seasons. We had it with a warm yuzu tea, a refreshing pairing after walking around Kyoto in the cold. The citrusy flavor was especially nice between bites of tempura. What made this little place stand out even more was the owner. He runs the kitchen himself but still takes the time to answer questions and chat with guests. We arrived about 10 minutes early while it was freezing outside, and he kindly let us wait indoors and even offered extra space for our bags. It was a small gesture, but one that made the whole visit feel very welcoming. A few tips if you’re adding this to your Kyoto map: · Seating is very limited, so arriving a little early is a good idea. · Go for the Hannari Tendon if you want to try lots of different ingredients in one meal. · The tempura selection can change with the seasons, so don’t expect the exact same 15 ingredients every time. · Pair it with the yuzu tea if you want something refreshing alongside the crispy tempura. · It’s conveniently near Yasaka Shrine, so you can easily combine it with a Gion sightseeing day. · If you’re carrying luggage or shopping bags, the owner was kind enough to help us with storage when we visited.
