Sahara Desert Merzouga was incredible 🗺️
#desert
My camel-riding adventure in the Sahara Desert at Merzouga was a dream come true! 🌵🐪 Located in southeastern Morocco, Merzouga is known for its stunning Erg Chebbi dunes, some of which rise up to 150 meters high. The experience began with a short drive from the village to the edge of the desert, where I was introduced to my friendly camel guide and my camel for the day. The ride cost about $40 per person, which included the guide, the camel, and even a small meal.
Riding a camel isn't the most comfortable experience, but there's something magical about swaying through the desert on the back of one of these gentle creatures. As we made our way into the heart of the dunes, the landscape became more surreal, with endless golden sand stretching as far as the eye could see. The silence of the desert was only broken by the sound of the wind and the occasional grunt from the camels. 🐪 The highlight was watching the sunset from the top of a high dune – the sky turned a brilliant orange and pink, and the temperature dropped, making everything feel cooler and more relaxed.
After the ride, we set up camp in a traditional Berber tent. Dinner was a delicious tagine cooked over an open fire, followed by music and dancing under the stars. 🌌 I even had the chance to try sandboarding down the dunes, which was both thrilling and hilarious! The night sky in the Sahara is something else – the Milky Way was visible, and the stars seemed close enough to touch.
If you're ever in Morocco, a camel trek in Merzouga is a must-do. The combination of breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality, and the unique desert experience makes it unforgettable. 🌅 #trip #SaharaDesert #Merzouga #CamelRiding #DesertSunset #BerberCulture

一生人最少去一次沙漠
Just a quick note to say what a fabulous 12 day tour I found this to be.
If you want to learn about the culture and history of a country as well as seeing some spectacular scenery then this is for you. There is a lot of travelling involved and a few early morning departures but enough time for rest to compensate. Maybe a little more space in the mini-bus would have been nicer as the back 4 seats were a little cramped but there were plenty of breaks during the journeys to from Marrakech to Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes, Fes, Merzouga, Skoura, Tigzha, Ouarzazate, Essaouira and back to Marrakech.
Food was good and sometimes exceptional. All accommodation was acceptable and in some cases fantastic. This was my first holiday of this type and I will certainly try another - most likely with Fes.#境外遊
Sahara Golden Sand Merzouga !
Merzouga is a small village in southeastern Morocco, about 35 km (22 mi) southeast of Rissani, about 55 km (34 mi) from Erfoud, and about 50 km (31 mi) from the Algerian border.
The village is known for its proximity to Erg Chebbi, and it is for this reason that a part of the itineraries of many tourists visit Morocco.[1] It has been described as "a desert theme park", and the Erg Chebbi as "a wonderland of sand".[2] Merzouga has the largest natural underground body of water in Morocco

I can’t even put into words how much I loved the three days I spent in this little town in the Sahara Desert. Merzouga is situated near the Algerian border, and is the perfect base from which to experience the culture and beautiful landscapes of the Sahara. You’ll find a massive expanse of sand dunes here, making you feel like you’re worlds away from civilization. But in fact, Merzouga is fairly easy to access, and has plenty of accommodations to make it an easy add to your Morocco itinerary. Stay at least two nights in a luxury desert camp to get the full experience and to give yourself enough time to unwind. Don’t miss ATV riding around the dunes, a musical performance from the local Berbers, and dinner under the stars. #awesomepic

Want to watch the sunset? My treat.
Explore Morocco, and the magnificent scenery of the Sahara Desert is undoubtedly a must-see for every traveler. Merzouga, a village in southeastern Morocco, is the dream gateway to the vast Sahara Desert.
Merzouga is a hidden gem known for its spectacular dunes, tent camps under the stars, and camel rides. If you want to immerse yourself in the desert and feel the primitive and free spirit, this is the place for you.
— Erg Chebbi, a 150-meter-high sand dune, is one of the most majestic sights in the Sahara Desert. At dawn, the golden sand sea glistens; at sunset, the sky is ablaze, and every moment is breathtaking. Even more surprising, this was the filming location for the movie "Lawrence of Arabia," where the traces of history and the wonders of nature intertwine, inspiring awe.
Stroll through the town of Merzouga, where traditional Berber markets, craft shops, and unique restaurants make you feel like you're traveling back to the daily life of the locals. Here, don't hesitate to bargain and experience the authentic "Berber style."
When night falls, desert stargazing camping will bring you an unprecedented shock. Millions of stars twinkle overhead, and traditional Berber music plays by the campfire. This is a visual and auditory feast, a baptism of the soul.
Travel tips:
- Sun protection and warmth: The temperature difference between day and night in the desert is huge. You need to protect yourself from the sun during the day and keep warm at night. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and down jackets are all essential!
- Clothing advice: For women, it is recommended to wear comfortable long pants and sneakers to avoid inconvenience when riding a camel.
- Headscarf and veil: The desert is windy and sandy, so a headscarf or veil can protect you from the sun and dust, making your desert trip more comfortable.

Discovering the Hidden Gems of Merzouga: A Gateway to the Sahara 🇲🇦
#myhiddengems
An Unforgettable Journey to Merzouga 🌅
My trip to Merzouga, a small village in southeastern Morocco, was a journey to a hidden gem that took me to the edge of the vast and awe-inspiring Sahara Desert. Far from the bustling cities, Merzouga offered a tranquil and immersive experience, where the beauty of the desert unfolds in all its glory.
The Majestic Dunes of Erg Chebbi 🏜️
The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the Erg Chebbi dunes, a stunning sea of golden sand stretching as far as the eye can see. These dunes, some of the highest in Morocco, are an iconic symbol of the Sahara. I embarked on a camel trek at sunset, a quintessential experience that allowed me to fully appreciate the serene and almost surreal landscape. The sight of the sun dipping below the horizon, casting long shadows across the rippling sand, was a moment of pure magic, and I captured a photo of my camel caravan silhouetted against the fiery sky—a true embodiment of the Sahara’s timeless beauty.
A Night Under the Desert Sky ✨
Spending a night in the desert was another unforgettable experience. I stayed in a traditional Berber camp, where the simplicity of life in the desert came to life. The evening was filled with the sound of Berber music, played around a campfire under a canopy of stars. I took a photo of the camp’s lanterns illuminating the dunes, capturing the ethereal glow that made the night feel both peaceful and enchanting. The silence of the desert at night, broken only by the crackling of the fire and the distant howl of the wind, was a profound reminder of the vastness and solitude of the Sahara.
Exploring the Village of Merzouga 🏡
Beyond the dunes, the village of Merzouga itself is a hidden gem worth exploring. The local markets offered a glimpse into traditional Moroccan life, with stalls brimming with vibrant spices, handcrafted jewelry, and colorful textiles. I visited a small gnawa music community, where I was welcomed with open arms and treated to a mesmerizing performance of traditional music. I took a photo of the musicians, their instruments intricately decorated, capturing the joy and cultural richness of this small but lively community.

Merzouga is a small Moroccan town in the Sahara Desert, near the Algerian border. It’s known as a gateway to Erg Chebbi, a huge expanse of sand dunes north of town. West of Merzouga, Dayet Srji is a seasonal salt lake that’s often dry in summer. When full, it attracts a wide range of migratory and desert birds, including desert warblers, Egyptian nightjars and, occasionally, flamingos
The great Sahara Desert 🐪
An amazing experience to watch the sunset and sunrise. Slide down the dunes and enjoy the climb up the fine sand. A trip not to be missed when you are in Morocco.
Incredible Sahara 🐪🌵
Reasons to Recommend: It was the highlight of my trip to Morocco 🇲🇦 I had an amazing experience in the Sahara desert! It was a long travel to get there but you can always do a few stops for sightseeing which makes the trip bearable. Watch the sunrise and sunset on the top-of the highest dunes and slide down the dunes for some extra fun.
Starry Nights Over the Sahara
Nestled at the edge of the majestic Sahara Desert, Merzouga is a gateway to one of nature's most awe-inspiring landscapes. My journey to this small Moroccan village was driven by the desire to experience the desert in its most unadulterated form, and what I found was beyond my wildest dreams. The highlight? Spending a night under the star-studded Sahara sky, a celestial spectacle unmatched in its beauty.
Embarking on a camel trek as the sun began its descent, the shifting sands glowed in hues of orange and red, leading us to our campsite for the night. The experience of riding through the dunes, feeling small amidst the vastness of the desert, was humbling and exhilarating in equal measure.
The night in the desert was an experience of profound silence and beauty. As darkness enveloped the landscape, the sky lit up with millions of stars, offering a clear view of the Milky Way. The absence of light pollution in the Sahara makes stargazing an unforgettable experience. Wrapped in blankets around a campfire, we listened to traditional Berber music, adding an element of cultural immersion to the natural spectacle.
Practical tips for future travelers: pack warm clothing, as temperatures in the desert can drop significantly at night. Also, bring a good quality camera if you're keen on astrophotography—the clarity of the night sky here is a photographer's dream.
Staying in a desert camp ranged from basic to luxury accommodations, catering to different preferences and budgets. I opted for a more authentic experience, which though basic, did not skimp on warmth and hospitality.
One word of advice is to ensure you book your desert tour with a reputable company. This ensures a safe and respectful experience towards the environment and local culture.
Merzouga and its starry nights reminded me of the beauty and vastness of our world, offering a moment of reflection and connection with nature that remains unmatched. This trip was not just a visit to a destination but a profound journey that touched my soul.
#SaharaStars #DesertDreams #MerzougaMagic #NightUnderTheStars #CulturalCrossroads
#falltrip#historicallandmarks#localguides
The best time to travel to Merzouga is from September to April. This time of the year the temperatures are more bearable although at night it can get chilly. In addition to soaring temperatures, there are often sand storms in the summer. These storms last from late spring to early fall, so we would not recommend going then.
Cost of a desert safari
A trip to the Merzouga desert can often become quite expensive if you don't do your research. We had a semi-private tour with excellent quality for $150per person, including two nights of camping in the desert, all the meals, two local guides, and camel trekking. So the prices can really be different from company to company and you shouldn’t rush to make a decision. You should weigh their options after some research. What we liked about our trip in the Merzouga desert
The thing we liked most:
Learning about the nomadic traditions from our guides who used to be nomads themselves
Our trip had a great value for money. We were really satisfied with the price of the trip. Our guides were amazing, the camps were comfortable with actual mattresses, and the food was delicious.
Camels were well-treated, settled and calm which is very important for us because a lot of the time camels used for tourists are treated badly and malnourished.
Another thing to remember is that Merzouga is the most famous desert destination in Morocco so can get crowded during the high season. This also leads to a lot of noise from the quads and dune buggies, especially during sunset. We didn't have that issue as much as we visited at the end of November. But it's definitely something to consider.
