I visited the World Heritage site of Sarazm, located in northwestern Tajikistan. It is one of the oldest urban settlements in Central Asia, dating back roughly 5,000 years—long before the Silk Road even existed. It’s just a short drive from Samarkand. Once you cross the border, you'll find expansive, tranquil ruins with barely a tourist in sight. Sarazm thrived during the Bronze Age. Excavations have uncovered dwellings, workshops, and ornaments, revealing it was once a major metropolis that prospered for ages over a vast area reaching Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and the Iranian Plateau. It's fascinating to imagine that thousands of years ago, people lived right here, exchanging culture and technology along ancient trade routes. While you won't find grand monuments still standing, it's an incredible place to connect with a "history long before the Silk Road." Far from the hustle and bustle of famous tourist spots, a quiet and profound time flowed here. 📍Sarazm Archaeological Site 🇹🇯 Tajikistan This site could easily be called the cradle of Central Asian civilization. If you're a history buff, this World Heritage site is an absolute must-visit.

All of these are names for the same complex of lakes deep within the Fann Mountains in Tajikistan. The elevation difference between the lowest and highest lakes is 760 meters, and the distance between them is over 14 km. The lakes are located 100 km from Samarkand. You can get there either by joining a tour (though the price is unjustifiably high—starting at $350 per car) or on your own by negotiating with a taxi driver. That's exactly what we did) First, you'll be driven to the Jartepa border crossing (about 45 km from Samarkand). Then, you have to cross the border on foot (it took us half an hour on the way there because something wasn't working on their end😅, and about 15 minutes on the way back). Once you cross, taxi drivers are waiting right at the border. As for the cost—your negotiation skills play a big role here, of course, but it came out to $150 for everything for us. Now down to business—what not to miss: 📍 Nezhigon (1,640 m above sea level) This is the very first and most peaceful lake. In the morning, the water is like a mirror. 📍 Soya (1,701 m) Locals call it the "shadow lake" because the sun barely reaches here, and its color is always deep and cold. 📍 Gushor (1,771 m) It is nestled between cliffs, and you can already feel the altitude here. Poisonous snakes used to live here, which explains the origin of its name. 📍 Nofin (1,820 m) This is the longest of all seven lakes, with a length of 2 km and a width of 400 m. The water has a greenish hue. It's the most lively lake, as there is a village nearby. 📍 Khurdak (1,870 m) This is the smallest lake. The texture of the shores is quite fascinating, and the color of the water closer to the edge is noticeably different. 📍 Marguzor (2,140 m) This is the largest, most photogenic, and Instagram-worthy lake)) Its length is 4.5 km, its depth is 45 m, and the water turns a soft pale blue. This is where postcard shots are made❤️ 📍 Hazorchashma (2,400 m) This is the last lake in the Shing River gorge. There are no more settlements; the road ends, and beyond it is only the wild nature of the Fann Mountains. That's why you can only view the lake from the northern side. To see it from the southern side, you'll need to go on a mountain hike, bypassing the rocky shores of the lake... And yes, for scale—the border with Afghanistan is roughly 70–90 km away in a straight line from here. The mountains are close, but it feels even closer😅

If you're visiting for the first time, save these tips to ensure a fantastic vacation free of any hiccups. 🏠 Accommodation: Dushanbe is a highly walkable, compact city. If you stay in the center (look for Rudaki Avenue or the Parliament district), you'll be able to get just about anywhere on foot. The downtown area is beautifully laid out with wide sidewalks, lovely public squares, endless fountains, and stunning nighttime illuminations. ✔️ Registration: If you plan on staying in the country for more than 10 working days, you must get a temporary registration. Hotels will handle this for you, but if you're renting from locals, you'll need to visit the local police station with your host. It's also highly recommended to carry your passport and registration slip with you at all times. 🚕 Taxis: The ride-hailing app Jura is huge here. We absolutely loved the local taxis: first, almost all the cabs are brand-new EVs (quiet and eco-friendly!); second, a ride across town averages just about $2; and third, taxis make up nearly half the traffic, making them super easy to hail via the app or by simply waving one down on the street. Every branded cab is metered, so there's no need to haggle over the fare. 💲 Money: Cash is king around here. The Pamirs Highway is the highest-altitude road in the former USSR, now the CIS, with passes reaching up to 4,655 meters 🏞️ It is a border zone with Afghanistan, so you need to obtain a permit from the OVIR office in Dushanbe to visit. Afghanistan lies on the other side of the Panj River. The best time to visit is from May to September!

We spent seven days exploring the Fann mountains with Noil as our driver and guide. He was incredibly flexible, adapting our plans as needed, helping organize accommodations, introducing us to locals, and showing us local dishes. Best of all, he was enthusiastic about discovering new places alongside us. But not for those who just returned from the Marguzor Lakes filled with indescribable emotions💦 This wasn't just a trip—it was an absolute blast of a tour with incredibly positive travelers🔥, who wouldn't even let the clouds get bored💨. And the clouds, I must say, really went all out⛈🌬💨. We were heading to the seventh lake—the sun was warming us up, it was beautiful💦. We got there—and bam! A wall of rain, thunder, and wind⚡️⚡️⚡️ We thought, well, this is extreme. But no: exactly 15 minutes later, the sun was shining again☀️, as if nothing had happened. And this happened twice while we were hiking down on foot🏃♀. We had never seen nature switch modes so fast—it was simply wow!☀️🌤🌦⛈ And to top it off, no one forced us to walk—we had SUVs at our disposal🚗 And then, a reward awaited us💐 First, dead calm and the incredible reflections of the cliffs in the lake⛰🌄. And at night, sitting by the cabins at the sixth lake, we watched the moon leave a glowing trail on the water🌠, with a starry sky overhead so breathtaking it made our heads spin🌌. Surprisingly, many visitors never make the short trip. The fortress has watched over the Hissar Valley for centuries, standing on a strategic hill where traders and travelers once passed along ancient routes. Although much of what you see today has been carefully restored, walking through its massive entrance gate and stone courtyards still gives you a sense of its long history. The setting, with mountains rising in the distance, makes it even more impressive. I especially enjoyed exploring the surrounding complex rather than only stopping for a photo. Nearby you'll find historic madrasas, a traditional caravanserai, and quiet gardens that help tell the story of this once-important regional center. Compared with famous fortresses in neighboring countries, Hissar feels remarkably uncrowded, allowing you to take your time and appreciate the atmosphere. I recommend visiting in the late afternoon, when the warm sunlight brings out the colors of the ancient walls and the surrounding valley. The site is easy to reach by taxi from Dushanbe, making it one of the simplest and most rewarding day trips from the capital. The Pamir Plateau, in Persian, means "flat roof." In ancient China, it was called Congling, and the ancient Silk Road passed through here. Located in the southeastern part of Central Asia and the westernmost part of China, it spans Tajikistan, China, and Afghanistan. The Pamir Plateau stretches across southwestern Xinjiang in China, southeastern Tajikistan, and northeastern Afghanistan. It is a massive mountain junction where the Kunlun Mountains, Karakoram Mountains, Hindu Kush Mountains, and Tianshan Mountains meet. The Pamir Plateau has towering mountains with an average elevation above 4,500 meters, and its main peaks are all above 6,000 meters. The highest peak in western Tajikistan is Communism Peak at 7,495 meters, followed by Lenin Peak at 7,134 meters.

Romit, Tajikistan: Getting there from Dushanbe is a breeze, just a 1.5-hour scenic drive 🚗. The mountain and river views alone are worth the trip: think endless green with perfect picnic spots. You can rent private rooms for families, and the highlight? There’s a kitchen setup where you can make your own meals — bring supplies from Dushanbe for a BBQ by the river (it’s cheap and way more fun than eating out🌲). The roads are solid, so no stress about rough travel. In Romit, local drivers are easy to find in Dushanbe, but arrange round-trip if possible. Cash is king in both spots — have some local currency handy. Romit’s mountain air is fresh even in summer. Xinjiang is the largest administrative region in China, covering over 1.6 million square kilometers (620,000 sq mi) in the far northwest corner of the country. While it’s part of China, Xinjiang is unique in the country for its ethic diversity and central Asian cultural heritage. Over half the population comes from ethnic minority groups and nearly 60% practice Islam. Parts of the region are closer to Istanbul than they are to Beijing. Xinjiang borders Mongolia, Russia and Kazakhstan to the north, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan to the west, and Pakistan, India, and Tibet to the south. The region also borders the Chinese provinces of Qinghai and Gansu to the east. Xinjiang is home to about 25 million people, which makes it the third least-densely populated region in the country after Qinghai and Tibet. The capital and largest city is Ürümchi. With 4 million people, Ürümchi is the largest city in Central Asia. The largest ethnic group in Xinjiang are the Uyugers, a Turkic ethnic group who speak their own language and practice Islam. They make up just under half of the population in Xinjiang. Another approximately 15% of the population is composed of other ethnic minorities, including Kazakhs, Hui, Kyrgyz and Mongol people. The remaining roughly 40% of Xinjiang’s residents are Han, part of the ethnic group that dominates east China. While most tourists head to the mountains of Kyrgyzstan or the Pamirs, just an hour's drive from Samarkand hides one of the most beautiful places in all of Central Asia. The Seven Lakes (Haftkul) is a chain of seven high-altitude lakes located one after the other in the Fann Mountains. Each has its own character, water color, and atmosphere. 🔹 The first lake is Nezhigon. It greets travelers with rich turquoise water and enormous cliffs that literally hang over the road. 🔹 The second is Soya. It is calmer and deeper, with a perfectly smooth surface reflecting the peaks. 🔹 The third is Khushyor. Here, the water becomes even brighter, and there are almost no signs of civilization around. 🔹 The fourth is Nofin. Nearby is a small mountain village where you can experience the real life of the locals. 🔹 The fifth is Khurdak. You can already feel the altitude, the air gets cooler, and the views become more expansive. 🔹 Sixth is Marguzor. The largest lake in the entire chain. This is where you want to stop for a while and simply gaze silently at the surrounding mountains. 🔹 Seventh is Khazorchashma. The highest lake on the route (approximately 2,400 m). Its name translates as "Thousand Springs," as it is here that numerous glacial springs emerge from the ground. But it's not just the lakes themselves that are impressive. Along the way, you'll encounter sheer cliffs hundreds of meters high, turbulent mountain rivers, small villages, donkeys, which are still the main mode of transport here, and one very unusual bridge. 🌉 The old suspension bridge over the Zeravshan River looks as if its set was forgotten after the filming of an adventure movie. The wooden deck has seen better days in places, and the bridge sways slightly, but that's precisely why it's one of the most atmospheric points on the entire route. And all this is virtually free of tourist crowds. 💰 We paid $70 for the entire day's ride. The price included: ✔️ Pickup in the morning right at the border between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; ✔️ Showing us all seven lakes; ✔️ Dropping us back at the border in the evening. ⏰ The tour lasted from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, which was enough time to calmly enjoy each stop. If you're in Samarkand, be sure to set aside a day for this trip. Believe me, the photos here are beautiful. But in person, this place leaves a completely different impression. The scale of the mountains, the color of the water, and the absolute silence—these are the moments that make you want to travel. 📍 Save this post—it will come in handy when planning a trip to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
