paddleboarder’s heaven If you’ve been to Cultus Lake, Alouette Lake, or Kentucky Lake and are looking for a quiet spot with fewer people and beautiful scenery to truly enjoy paddleboarding, Allison Lake is definitely worth a visit. About 3.5–4 hours from Vancouver, near Princeton, perfect for a weekend overnight trip. We decided to go last minute without a reservation and got lucky snagging the last first-come, first-served campsite before 11 AM. 📍 About the campground Allison Lake Provincial Park’s campground is small. Some sites can be reserved in advance, but there are also first-come, first-served spots. On busy weekend days, it’s best to arrive early. We barely found a spot when we arrived later. The campground has pit toilets but is surprisingly clean. There is a water supply, but when we visited, the taps seemed under repair and had no water, so be sure to bring enough drinking and cooking water. 📍 About the lake It’s truly stunning. The lake shore has large areas of white lakebed mud, and paddleboarding reveals a beautiful blue-green gradient. This lake is very light-dependent; it looks completely different on cloudy versus sunny days. For photos, pick a sunny day—the colors from the sunlight refraction are much more vibrant. ⚠️ Watch out for wind! Strong winds often pick up in the afternoon, much stronger than expected. Don’t assume calm water means it’s safe to paddle far out, especially on a paddleboard. Always check if the return trip will be against the wind. We couldn’t paddle back at all and were kindly given a ride by a local resident’s boat 🤣. The wind was really strong that day. Always wear a life jacket once you paddle beyond the shallow area! 📵 No cell signal There’s basically no cell signal once you enter the campground. Download offline maps before you go and inform family of your plans in advance. 🚗 You don’t have to camp There’s a day-use area by the lake, so if you don’t want to camp, a day trip is totally doable. Leave early, paddle all day, and return to Vancouver in time. ✨ Overall impression: Few people, beautiful scenery, clear water, and plenty of paddleboarding fun. Golden Ears Provincial Park is about an hour's drive from downtown Vancouver. Even though it was the weekend, there weren't many people, so it's a hidden gem of a spot to enjoy nature.
