The lemon and spices add freshness, so it’s not greasy at all. The seared scallops are tender, and the generous ingredients make the noodles seem scarce. Mainz boasts a very famous brewery: Eisgrub Braeu. I had such a wonderful experience dining and drinking beer there that I highly recommend it to everyone. Mainz is a quiet city, so it's not particularly special, but the beer at this brewery was truly special. I ordered a pork loin steak with stout sauce, a non-alcoholic beer, and the brewery's special stout. At €25.50, it was a great value. Since I'm not a big drinker, I chose the 0.2l option. You can order small beers and non-alcoholic beer, making it perfect for those who don't drink but still want to enjoy German beer. The non-alcoholic beer is incredibly rich and refreshing, making it a great choice for those who enjoy a German beer. The stout, brewed on-site, is also fantastic. It's perfectly nutty and bitter, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The pork steak I ordered for dinner was also excellent. It paired perfectly with the stout sauce. I was able to watch the beer-making process, and the staff were pleasant and friendly, making it a truly memorable experience. I'd love to return to Mainz just to visit this brewery. If you like old towns, then you may add Mainz to your itinerary. Mainz is located at the beach of Rhune river just where Rhine divides to Rhine and Main river (leading to Frankfurt). The town has a population of 200 000 people and it’s considered an important center of German wine. The old town is small but looks nice with a lot of beautiful fountains and statues. You could visit Mainz during the same day with the nearby Wiesbaden. Both are small towns and visiting them could be possible during one. I recommend to leave Wiesbaden to the evening. So imagine my surprise when I found myself standing in the middle of hundreds of thousands of people, all dressed as pirates, princesses, superheroes, giant bananas and characters I couldn't even identify. Welcome to Rose Monday (Rosenmontag) — the biggest day of Germany's carnival season. And honestly? It was one of the most unexpected experiences I've ever had while traveling. 🎉 So... what is Rose Monday? The tradition goes back hundreds of years and marks the peak of the German Carnival season before Lent begins. Today it's celebrated in several cities, but Düsseldorf, Cologne and Mainz host the biggest parades. In Düsseldorf, the city completely transforms: roads close, music fills every street, carnival floats roll through the center for hours, throwing sweets, flowers and small gifts into the cheering crowds. For one day, it feels like the whole city forgets about work and simply celebrates. 🎭 Everyone dresses up — and I mean everyone This was probably the biggest surprise. It's not just children wearing costumes, adults do too and grandparents, office workers. Groups of friends spend months planning matching outfits, and the creativity is incredible. One minute you're standing next to a Viking... The next, you're chatting with someone dressed as a giant pretzel. 💡 My advice? Wear a costume. Even something simple makes you feel part of the celebration instead of just watching it. 🍬 Bring a bag... you'll thank me later One thing I definitely wasn't prepared for? The amount of candy. As the parade passes, people on the floats throw chocolates, gummies, popcorn and even flowers into the crowd. Locals come prepared with reusable bags or backpacks, but tourists usually spend the first hour trying to catch everything with their hands. Guess which group I belonged to? 😄 📍 Where to watch the parade I watched the parade in Düsseldorf, and the atmosphere was incredible from start to finish. If you're planning to go: ⏰ Arrive early. The best spots fill up long before the parade begins. The closer you stand to the barriers, the better your chances of catching sweets and small souvenirs thrown from the floats. 🚆 Getting around Leave the car behind because many streets close for the parade, and parking becomes almost impossible. The easiest way to get around is by train or public transport. If you're staying outside Düsseldorf, book your return ticket in advance—trains after the parade get very busy. 🎭 It's more than just a parade Yes, the floats are spectacular. Some are funny, some are incredibly detailed and many include giant satirical figures commenting on politics and world events. That's one of the most unique parts of Rose Monday. Behind the music and confetti is a long tradition of using carnival to laugh at those in power. It's clever, creative and unlike anything I'd seen before. 💡 Things I wish I'd known before 🎒 Bring a small bag for all the candy. 🥤 Carry water and a few snacks—restaurants get busy. 👟 Wear comfortable shoes. You'll be standing and walking for hours. 🧥 Dress warmly. The stained glass windows, created by Marc Chagall, the "master of color," featuring his signature "Chagall Blue," offer a "heavenly tranquility." Be sure to experience the magnificent "invitation bells" that ring before Sunday service. From Mainz Central Station (Mainz Hbf), take tram number 52 (towards Hechtsheim). Get off at the fourth stop, "Gautor" (approximately 6 minutes). It's 300m back in the direction you came from. It's also a 20-minute walk from Mainz Central Station. From Frankfurt, a 1-day pass for unlimited RE, S-Bahn, buses, and trams is incredibly economical. Church admission is free. Tourist visits are not permitted on Sundays from 11:00 to 12:00 due to worship services.
