Hiking from Lukla to Phakding in Nepal is just a small 7.8km trail, but it is the altitude that will bring you fatigue, I flew in from Kathmandu to Lukla and the body experienced a change of close to double from 1,400m to 2,860m and for someone from Singapore where the highest hill in Singapore is Bukit Timah Hill which stands at 164m in altitude, that change can kill anyone who isn't able to adapt to it. #gohiking

The first day of actual trekking is a gentle start from Lukla with just three hours hike to the village of Phakding. Thanks to the Himalayan Masters team, I was able to enjoy two fantastic helicopter tours and a wonderful, albeit brief, trekking experience (with a helicopter return). During the first helicopter tour, I reached the Annapurna Base Camp from Pokhara airport. The view at Annapurna Base Camp was truly extraordinary. As for the short trekking, I hiked to the Everest View Hotel starting from Lukla. Although the return to Lukla was planned by helicopter, the cloudy skies and lack of visibility from the Everest View Hotel led the exceptional Himalayan Masters team to take me by helicopter to Kala Patthar before heading back to Lukla. Kala Patthar offers a strategic vantage point with spectacular views of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse. The Himalayan Masters team stands out for their exceptional expertise, kindness, organization, resourcefulness, and reliability. Absolutely recommended!

A very helpful and friendly team organized our flights conveniently from Kathmandu to Lukla. Due to bad weather, our flight was returned to Kathmandu before reaching Lukla. Santosh immediately arranged an alternative helicopter flight, allowing us to reach the mountains the same day. Flexible return dates were no issue either. They greatly eased and enhanced our stay in Nepal. We will definitely use their services again next time.

My husband and I booked Adventure Great Himalaya for the 3 Passes and Everest Base Camp trek. Everything was well-organized, and they communicated efficiently via email, answering all my questions ahead of time. They even let us borrow some gear. They arranged comfortable accommodations and transfers so we could start our trek successfully. Both our guide Krishna and porter were friendly and helpful, making the trekking experience enjoyable. Krishna was encouraging throughout, tailoring the trek to our preferences and ensuring we didn’t rush unnecessarily. Unfortunately, my husband became ill, and we had to stop at Dingboche. Krishna provided excellent support, helping us extend our stay in town so my husband could recover and assisting with visiting the local clinic doctor. Though Krishna suggested alternate routes to continue the trek, we ultimately decided it was time to head down. He was understanding of our decision and helpful in organizing a helicopter from the town below since my husband couldn’t trek back. Krishna also re-arranged our flight from Lukla, ensuring we returned to Kathmandu as soon as possible. Upon arrival, our accommodations were arranged for the remainder of the trip. While alternative tours were offered for the rest of our stay, sadly, we were both too unwell to participate. Although our trek did not go as planned, we greatly enjoyed the beautiful start of the journey. We were very pleased with the support and organization provided, which made things as smooth as possible. Many thanks to the team!

This year, I decided to take the plunge, and let me tell you, it was both terrifying and exhilarating. The journey started at Kathmandu's domestic terminal, where the tiny twin-engine plane waiting for us was a stark reminder that this wouldn't be your typical flight. As we took off, the mountains came into view, and my initial excitement quickly gave way to nervous laughter. The plane felt like it was dancing in the turbulence, and every bump had me clutching my seat for dear life. And then, there it was-Lukla's notorious runway. It's a mere 527 meters long and slopes uphill, ending abruptly at a cliff. The pilot maneuvered the plane with surgical precision, and as we touched down, I let out a breath I didn't realize l'd been holdina. The experience was equal parts terrifying and awe-inspiring, but stepping off the plane with the towering Himalayas around me made it all worth it. Flying into Lukla isn't just a journey-it's a badge of courage. Would I do it again? Maybe... after a strong chai.

I went on the Nepal ABC trek. The mountains were so beautiful and magnificent, and Nepal was more underdeveloped than I thought. The people were kind and gave me a faint but warm smile. It was a trip that made me think a lot about many things.

#Hiking #Mountains #Nepal #Everest The first hurdle in reaching Everest Base Camp isn't your stamina or acclimatizing to the altitude, but getting the plane up and down smoothly! 🛩️ From Kathmandu International Airport, a grueling 4-5 hour drive takes you to a small, shabby, and chaotic inland airport! Don't try to take a city-dwelling flight to Lukla; you'll never get on the plane! Lukla Airport (renamed Tenzing-Hillary Airport in 2008) is known as the most dangerous airport in the world! Flanked by the Himalayas on one side and a cliff on the other, the runway is only 527 meters long, requiring aircraft to accelerate and decelerate on a slope. Even the slightest mistake can result in a fatal crash. 💀 For safety reasons, flights to Lukla are only possible on clear days. Due to frequent flight cancellations, Kathmandu's inland airport is packed with passengers waiting to board. Even if you've purchased your ticket, getting a boarding pass isn't guaranteed! From what I observed at the time, the domestic airport was packed with at least 300 people. The staff prioritized large groups of 10 or more, leaving individual travelers waiting on a waitlist. Getting a waitlist isn't easy either; it's best to ask a local tour guide to help you get one, or you'll be ignored. Our domestic flights were booked through a local travel agency, for a 9:30 a.m. flight. The three of us finally boarded at 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., respectively. We had to take two separate flights (from different airlines), so it doesn't really matter which ticket we bought. 😓 After obtaining our boarding passes, we had our luggage weighed. The carry-on baggage plus checked luggage could not exceed 15kg, otherwise there would be a fine (we think the scale was slightly manipulated; we were both 1kg over the limit). We then went through a simple manual security check, like a Didi-style bag check, and were allowed to board! The flight to Lukla was a small plane, with only 18 seats, including the flight attendant seats. You could choose your seat freely! We recommend sitting on the left side for a great view of the snow-capped mountains. The flight lasts 25 minutes, and the flight attendants will distribute mints and cotton wool (ear plugs) to passengers. Arriving in Lukla marks the gateway to climbing Mount Everest! Lukla is the starting and ending point for this 12-day climb to Base Camp. It's a relatively well-maintained town. Mountain climbing travelogue...to be continued...
