Basongcuo Lake costs about 120 yuan for the entrance fee and sightseeing bus. The lake water has an unreal blue-green hue. There's a thousand-year-old oak tree by the lake; locals say walking around it three times brings good luck. The road conditions on this section of the Yunnan-Tibet Highway are good, but there are many curves, so drivers should be careful to control their speed. The essence of the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is between Pai Town and Zhibai Village. The best chance to see Namcha Barwa Peak is before 9 am; the clouds will come in the afternoon. ⚠️ Linzhi is at an altitude of about 3,000 meters. The owner will also help with simple makeup. 3️⃣ Guyuan City | Ningxia Guyuan is often overlooked but is the best base for traveling the northwest route with your parents. Xumi Mountain Grottoes are hidden in the cliffs. They’re smaller than Dunhuang but much quieter. Arrive right when it opens at 9 AM to see sunlight shining on the Buddha statues’ faces, creating a solemn atmosphere that calms the mind. The boardwalks in the park are flat and leisurely; two hours is enough to explore. The most impressive sight is the giant Buddha in Cave 5. Standing at its feet and looking up, you can feel the devotion of craftsmen from a thousand years ago. ⚠️ Photography is prohibited inside the grottoes. Don’t bring cameras in. Villagers at the foot of the mountain sell local dried apricots and goji berries for 10 RMB a bag, cheaper than supermarkets outside the park. For lunch, try a bowl of Shengcuan noodles in Guyuan city. The broth is fresh and the noodles smooth, costing about 15 RMB per person. If you have energy in the afternoon, drive to Liupan Mountain National Forest Park. The mountain roads are winding, so parents prone to motion sickness should take medicine in advance. 4️⃣ Chongzuo City | Guangxi Chongzuo is the best alternative to Guilin for parents who want to see mountains and water without the crowds. The Tianmu Lake fish head soup is creamy and rich. One portion serves four people, costing about 60 RMB per person. Yancheng Tourist Area is more cultural, with a unique layout of three cities and three rivers. The park has a recreated ancient street and performances. The 2 PM bronze bell concert is worth hearing. Seniors will enjoy the traditional atmosphere. ⚠️ Yancheng closes at 5 PM. Don’t arrive too late. Universal Dinosaur City is great for grandchildren but can be skipped if you’re only with your parents. It’s crowded and noisy. 🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from downtown Changzhou to Tianmu Lake via the highway. The round-trip fare is just over 100 RMB, saving time compared to the bus. 6️⃣ Lu’an City | Anhui The biggest surprise in Lu’an is Tiantangzhai. It combines the grandeur of the Dabie Mountains with the elegance of Jiangnan. Take your parents on the waterfall trail. The whole route has boardwalks and gentle slopes, taking about two hours round-trip. There are five waterfalls along the way, with roaring water and moist air like a natural oxygen bar. I don’t recommend the glass boardwalk at the summit. Parents with weak legs might feel dizzy. After descending, have a meal of Jinzhai hanging pot at a farmhouse restaurant near the park entrance. It’s a stew of cured meat, dried bamboo shoots, and tofu, costing about 40 RMB per person and very flavorful. Wanfo Lake is better visited in the afternoon. The lake is wide open. A boat tour takes about 40 minutes. It’s windy, so bring a jacket for your parents. There’s a Guanyin statue on a small island in the lake. The boat captain will stop for 10 minutes so you can pay respects and relax. ⚠️ Wanfo Lake boats depart on the hour. If you miss one, you’ll wait an hour. Plan your time accordingly. 7️⃣ Baoding City | Hebei The biggest surprise in Baoding is Qingxi Mausoleum. It’s much quieter than Qingdong Mausoleum, with towering pines, red walls, and yellow tiles. Visitors are sparse, making it perfect for a slow stroll. The Long’en Hall in Muling is made entirely of nanmu wood. Walking inside, you can smell the faint wood fragrance. The royal grandeur is understated but commanding. Baishi Mountain is famous for its strange peaks and rocks. Enter from the east gate with your parents. Take the cable car up and walk along the flat boardwalk. You’ll see the famous “Immortal drying boots” and “Twin hero stones.” ⚠️ Baishi Mountain is at a high altitude with strong winds at the top. Bring a windbreaker even in summer. Bailixia in Yesanpo is a canyon with trails along streams. It’s shady and cool, perfect for seniors who dislike heat. 🍜 Don’t miss Baoding’s donkey meat sandwich. These eight cities stand out—some for their stunning landscapes, some for their distinctive flavors, and others for their old buildings and slow pace that pull you back in time. I’ve hit some pitfalls and found plenty of gems, and today I’m sharing them all with you. 01 Hulunbuir | Inner Mongolia 📍 Hulunbuir grassland I arrived at 3 PM that day. The grassland was bathed in warm golden green sunlight. When the wind blew, waves of grass rolled from underfoot all the way to the horizon. Don’t just focus on the Morigele River viewing platform. Head 20 km west, find a dirt road and turn in. That grassland is almost empty, and all you can hear are the wind and horse hooves. ⏰ The softest light is from 5 PM to 7 PM. Backlit portraits make hair strands glow. ⚠️ Don’t rent horses at the scenic entrance—it’s expensive and the route is short. Find a local herder’s stable. Descend via the Baima Peak plank road for better views. The steps are steep, so avoid if you have knee problems. Wanfo Lake is a 1.5-hour drive from Tiantangzhai. The lake is as vast as the sea. There’s a shuttle from the foot to mid-mountain. From there, a short hike leads to the waterfall clusters—no need to hike the whole way. Wanfo Lake offers a different experience. Take a boat tour. The lake is dotted with islands, the water emerald green. The green mountains reflect on the calm surface like a giant mirror. It’s windy on the boat, so bring a light jacket. By the lake is a fish head restaurant. The fish head tofu stew is incredibly fresh. One small pot is enough for two. ⚠️ Don’t buy local specialty products at the scenic area shops—they’re overpriced. It’s better to shop at the county supermarket. 07 Qinhuangdao | Hebei Stay one night each in Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan. Beidaihe is perfect for a retirement-style vacation. The sunrise at Pigeon Nest Park is spectacular. ⏰ Arrive before 5 AM to claim a spot on the beach. When the sun jumps out of the horizon, everyone holds their breath. After the sunrise, go back to the hotel for a nap. In the afternoon, wade at Tiger Stone Beach. The water is cold, so don’t swim too long. Stay near Haining Road. The sea is right outside, and dining is convenient. Shanhaiguan is different. The ancient city wall is massive. Standing on the First Pass Under Heaven gate tower, you see the plain stretching to the horizon. The wind is strong enough to sting your eyes, but you feel admiration inside. Laolongtou extends into the sea. Waves crash against the wall’s base. That desolate feeling must be seen to be understood. ⚠️ Don’t trust the “tricycle one-day tours” at the Shanhaiguan entrance—they’re all shopping stops. 08 Zaozhuang | Shandong I recommend staying one night in Tai’erzhuang Ancient City. The night view is the essence. During the day, explore the ancient city. Shops and inns along the canal are built in traditional style. At night, lanterns light up, reflecting red on the water. Rowboats creak as they pass by. It feels like stepping back to the Ming and Qing canal port. There’s plenty to eat in the ancient city. Huanghua beef noodles and vegetable pancakes are local favorites. Avoid big restaurants. Find small shops with tables outside. Sit down for a bowl of noodles with rich broth and tender beef for just 15 or 16 yuan. ⚠️ The ancient city ticket is valid for two days. Spend the first day exploring, enjoy the night view, then visit again the next morning when it’s less crowded. It’s a great value. Take the kids up the city tower to see the Qilian Mountains’ snow line. The wind is strong enough to blow off hats, and it feels at least 10 degrees cooler. Don’t eat at the scenic area entrance at noon. Drive 5 minutes to the city’s Jingtie Market, where a bowl of beef rice with a marinated egg costs less than 15 yuan. Locals sit at low tables sweating while eating. In the afternoon, go to Taolai River. The river water below the cliffs is a blue-green so vivid kids can throw stones all afternoon. Remember to bring a light windbreaker because the river breeze can be chilling. ⚠️ The fortress is less crowded after 4 PM, but the light is harsh and photos can be overexposed.
