High-speed rail access! These 4 cities are perfect for taking it easy for 3 days
🚄 High-speed rail access! Four lazy cities ideal for a short 3-day stay
I recently discovered four hidden-gem cities reachable by high-speed rail. Prices are low, the pace is slow, and they’re perfect for spending a weekend or holiday doing nothing for 3 days.
No need for elaborate planning — just wandering around is relaxing.
📍 Quzhou — Zhejiang’s spiciest city
Many people don’t know Quzhou, but it’s really a hidden gem, and spice lovers will be thrilled.
Highlights: Shuitingmen historic district, Confucius south-line ancestral temple, Quzhou Museum, Lankeshan, Longyou Caves (if you have time)
Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive at Quzhou station in the afternoon, stay near Shuitingmen. In the evening, stroll Shuitingmen, enjoy the night views, and try gedai bing and baked flatbread.
Day 2: Visit the Confucius temple and the museum in the morning (both free). Have mala tang (Quzhou specialty) for lunch. In the afternoon, go to Lankeshan (there’s a bus). In the evening, try a "three heads and a palm" dish (duck head, rabbit head, fish head, duck webbed feet).
Day 3: Sleep in, have breakfast at Songyuan market, buy some crystal cake, then head home.
Food picks: gedai bing, baked flatbread, three heads and a palm, Quzhou mala tang, crystal cake. Note: Quzhou is really spicy — if you can’t handle spice, ask for mild.
Tips: Attractions are close to each other and taxis are cheap. Lankeshan involves a short hike but isn’t steep. Confucius temple ticket is ¥10, well worth it.
📍 Jingdezhen — the porcelain capital, a must for art lovers
Jingdezhen is so much fun to explore, with ceramics everywhere on the streets. You can find many pretty, affordable souvenirs.
Highlights: imperial kiln ruins, China Ceramics Museum, Taoxichuan creative district, Sanbao international porcelain valley, Sculpture Porcelain Factory (Letian market)
Itinerary:
Day 1: After arrival, visit the imperial kiln ruins (free, spectacular at night). In the evening, walk Taoxichuan and have a coffee.
Day 2: Visit the ceramics museum in the morning (free, a must-see!). In the afternoon, explore the Sculpture Porcelain Factory and the Letian market (open Saturday mornings; there are regular shops on other days). Try a hands-on pottery session.
Day 3: Go to Sanbao village to visit artists’ studios — great for photos. Then return home.
Food picks: lengfen, jiaozi ba, jianshui cake, beef-bone rice noodles, ceramic clay stewed chicken. Try local snacks in Fuzhou lane.
Tips: Letian market is only on Saturday mornings, so check the time. The imperial kiln looks better at night. Pottery workshops cost about ¥100–200.
📍 Liuzhou — a paradise for luosifen fans
Liuzhou not only has luosifen, but also stunning karst landscapes, and prices are very low.
Highlights: Longtan Park, Ma’anshan Park (for night views), Yaobu ancient town, Liuzhou Industrial Museum, Wuxing Street

📍 Zhangzhou — slow Minnan life, even more relaxed than Xiamen
Zhangzhou is a hidden treasure in Fujian, with a charming old town and easy access to the coast and Volcano Island.
Highlights: Zhangzhou old town, Yundong Cave, Nanshan Temple, Daimi ancient village, Volcano Island (requires a full day)
