The best time to visit is in the late afternoon, about two hours before sunset, when the changing light brings out the colours in the landscape. Well… that was the plan. 😂 Except that I arrived on a very grey, overcast day. Not only was there no golden sunset nor dramatic glowing sky for me, it even started raining. I was cold, slightly damp and wondering whether I had made a terrible decision as I made my way around the viewing platforms. But there was a silver lining — the rain actually made the colours of the Danxia deepen significantly. The reds became richer, the layers more pronounced, and the whole landscape took on a much moodier, almost surreal quality. So perhaps I didn't get the sunset I came for, but I got something I wasn't expecting. 😊 🌈 The route The easiest sequence is to start from the North Gate and follow the sightseeing bus through the platforms: Qicai Xianyuan → Qicai Yunhai → Qicai Jinxiu → Qicai Hongxia Save your time for Hongxia Terrace, the final platform, where you can settle in for sunset before taking the bus back to the North Gate. 🚕 Getting there The scenic area is around 40–50 minutes from Zhangye city. I took a taxi/car from the city, but here's the important bit: Ask your driver to wait for you and take you back to Zhangye. You can watch the sunset from the room without stepping outside. The design is northwest wabi-sabi style, with rammed earth walls and natural wood furniture. No trees, no grass—just pure, bare, unapologetic color spreading across the land and sky. The slanting sunlight cast shadows along the bands, creating clear contrasts between light and dark. Climbing the boardwalk to viewpoint 1, the full panorama unfolded: distinct rock layers rose and fell with the mountain, forming endless waves of color. The deepest red glowed with an ocher hue, while the yellow and white areas looked like they had been drizzled with milk. The wind blew through the valley, dry and cool, carrying the scent of dust from millions of years ago. Visit the centre of China and travel to the Rainbow Mountains in 📍Zhangye, Gansu Province! We saw this amazing natural site on our Silk Road Tour 🙌✨️⭐️ 📖 Our tour guide shared the story of how the Rainbow Mountains became a tourist attraction. A boy was visiting his uncle and followed him around as there was not much to do in the town. One day the uncle took his nephew to the mountains and the nephew took some photos of the rainbow rock formations. The nephew was a journalist and when he returned home he published his photos in the newspaper. 📽 Readers were amazed and interested. Famous Chinese film maker Zhang Yimou (director of Beijing 2008 Olympics opening) also featured the rainbow mountains in his film A Simple Noodle, further showcasing the beauty of the natural site. And thats how the Rainbow Mountains became a tourist site! 🌈 We hopped on and off a bus which took us to each platform to view the amazing mountains. We saw vivid colours of red, orange, yellow, and blue. Purple, green, and grey are also present but hidden to the eye as it has not rained in a long time! Platform 3 had the best views! 💲Admission cost is about 74 yuan for park entrance and hop on/off bus (approx $11 USD/ $19 NZD).
