Those weren’t just mountains; they were bands of red, orange, yellow, and white flowing from the base to the peak, with lines so smooth it looked like a giant hand had brushed them. No trees, no grass—just pure, bare, unapologetic color spreading across the land and sky. The slanting sunlight cast shadows along the bands, creating clear contrasts between light and dark. Climbing the boardwalk to viewpoint 1, the full panorama unfolded: distinct rock layers rose and fell with the mountain, forming endless waves of color. The deepest red glowed with an ocher hue, while the yellow and white areas looked like they had been drizzled with milk. The wind blew through the valley, dry and cool, carrying the scent of dust from millions of years ago. The whole valley was so quiet you could only hear the wind, while the earth’s colors spread out passionately. In the evening, I went to viewpoint 4 to watch the sunset. The sun sank inch by inch behind the distant mountains, and the light and shadows shifted by the second—the sunlight hit the rock walls, turning the bands from orange to golden red, while the shadows deepened to dark purple and crimson. The mountains suddenly transformed from flat shapes into three-dimensional forms, every line glowing. The entire Danxia Mountain looked like it was draped in a breathing brocade robe. When the last ray of light disappeared behind the ridge, the sky still held a faint pink afterglow, and the colors of Danxia sank into twilight, becoming a deep and gentle oil painting. The surrounding silence made it hard to leave—that kind of quiet that comes from seeing something so beautiful you don’t want to make a sound. The next day, I visited Binggou Danxia. A boy was visiting his uncle and followed him around as there was not much to do in the town. One day the uncle took his nephew to the mountains and the nephew took some photos of the rainbow rock formations. The nephew was a journalist and when he returned home he published his photos in the newspaper. 📽 Readers were amazed and interested. Famous Chinese film maker Zhang Yimou (director of Beijing 2008 Olympics opening) also featured the rainbow mountains in his film A Simple Noodle, further showcasing the beauty of the natural site. And thats how the Rainbow Mountains became a tourist site! 🌈 We hopped on and off a bus which took us to each platform to view the amazing mountains. We saw vivid colours of red, orange, yellow, and blue. Purple, green, and grey are also present but hidden to the eye as it has not rained in a long time!
