Zhuganxiang Street. Located along the canal in the ancient city area of Linqing, Shandong, this ancient street from the Ming and Qing dynasties is approximately 1,000 meters long. The street's overall historical layout is well-preserved, with 17 typical front shop, back workshop style ancient buildings remaining in the area. Formed during the Ming Dynasty, it relied on the advantages of the Linqing water transport hub. Large quantities of bamboo and bamboo poles carried by Jiangnan grain transport boats traveled north along the canal, unloading and distributing at this wharf, which gave birth to the local bamboo processing industry. During the peak of the Ming and Qing dynasties, more than 70 bamboo workshops gathered in the alley, with over 1,000 practitioners. Products covered hundreds of categories, including agricultural tools, daily necessities, and children's toys, serving as an important microcosm of Linqing's commercial prosperity, which was said to "surpass the two capitals." The ancient street and the mosque are not far apart, and can be visited together. It is now a key cultural relic protection unit of Liaocheng City ------------------------- Opening hours: Open all year round, all day Admission: Free Transportation: (For reference) Bus: Take bus 6, 108, 102, 101, 2, 9, or 111 to get there, then start your visit Driving: Navigation destination: Parking lot near Zhuganxiang Street (Parking is not very convenient) Finally, we wish you a pleasant trip. The Mosque (Main Mosque) is located on Taoyuan Street in Linqing, Shandong. Built during the Hongzhi reign of the Ming Dynasty, it was renovated multiple times during the 43rd year of the Jiajing reign (1564) and the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. The architecture follows a symmetrical layout along the central axis. The main hall features a hip roof structure, which was the highest architectural specification in ancient times, covered with yellow and green glazed tiles. It can accommodate over 2,000 people for worship. The lintel of the iconic Moon-Watching Tower is embedded with a plaque inscribed by Mao Zedong that reads "Mosque." This is the only plaque Chairman Mao ever inscribed for a religious site. The interior preserves Ming Dynasty floral murals and Arabic script caisson ceilings, and displays couplets and ancient plaques inscribed by famous figures during the Kangxi and Qianlong reigns of the Qing Dynasty. It is now a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. ------------------------- Opening hours: 8:00 AM–5:30 PM Ticket price: Free Transport information (for reference) Bus: Take bus 6, 108, 102, 101, 2, 9, or 111 to reach the site Driving: Navigate to "Mosque Parking Lot" Have a pleasant trip.

Can anyone relate, guys? 😭 I originally thought Liaocheng only had the bustling main street of the Water Ancient City, and I came here expecting to explore the canal and water transport cultural heritage and encounter the autumn light on the lake. But I was completely blown away by the Zhugan Ancient Alley in the old town, the Linqing gardens, and the ancient villages on the plains in Sept–Oct🍂! The autumn clouds were clear, the lake water was limpid, the number of tourists had dropped, and the blue-brick alleys, canal relics, and rural villages were all intertwined. The sense of relaxation was off the charts, and once I arrived, I couldn't bear to leave in a hurry🌾 ① 3-day canal water city tour itinerary 📅🗺️🍁 Day 1: Slow tour of the old town canal culture 📜🏡☕ In the morning, visit the back courtyard of the Shan-Shaan Guild Hall 🏛️. Avoid the crowds in the front hall to quietly enjoy the blue-brick courtyards and exquisite wood and stone carvings. With few tourists, you can immerse yourself in the architectural charm of the canal merchant groups from back in the day. In the afternoon, wander through the residential alleys of Dongguan Zhugan Alley 🏘️. Skip the bustling commercial streets of the ancient city and duck into the old alleys where locals live. With rows of low blue-brick bungalows and remnants of the old canal bamboo-ware street, the original dwellings are well-preserved without being overly commercialized. The area is free to enter all day, so take your time strolling and experience the daily life of old Liaocheng. In the evening, take a walk along the riverside path on the west bank of Dongchang Lake 🌙. As the daytime hustle and bustle fades, feel the gentle breeze on the lake, find a small restaurant serving canal-style food, and soak in the quiet night view of the old water city. Day 2: In-depth tour of gardens and canal transport 🌅💐🚶 Early in the morning, head to the side paths of Linqing Wanyuan Garden 🌿. This is a hidden gem of Jiangbei gardens kept secret by the locals. In Sept–Oct, the plants in the garden take on the colors of early autumn. With rockeries, ponds, and winding corridors, walking slowly along the paths in the garden, with pavilions reflected in the water, it is quiet and perfect for zoning out. In the afternoon, head to the riverbank outside the Canal Chaoguan 🌳. Avoid the ticketed core area and stroll along the ancient canal embankment. With the remnants of the old canal customs checkpoint and the slowly flowing river, the path is flat and far from the noise of the city, allowing you to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the thousand-year-old canal. In the evening, wait for the sunset on the west bank of Dongchang Lake 🌇. The sunset dyes the lake water and the blue-brick buildings of the ancient city in warm orange tones. The lake light is gentle, perfect for quietly enjoying the dusk of the Jiangbei water city. Day 3: Healing trip to ancient villages on the plains 🍃🪨🏡 In the morning, head to Tangyi Ancient Village 🏞️. It is an original ancient village on the plains with rows of old courtyards. The Confucian temple and ancient stage are hidden in the village. It is very uncommercialized with few tourists. Stroll along the stone paths in the countryside and feel the tranquil atmosphere of the ancient villages in western Shandong. In the afternoon, return to downtown Liaocheng, visit the local farmers' market, find an authentic Western Shandong restaurant, eat and chat while basking in the warm autumn sun, and feel the easy pace of the small city before preparing for your return trip. ② Transportation 🚞🚌⚠️ Take the high-speed train to Liaocheng West Station. From there, you can take a taxi directly to the Dongchang Lake old town 🚄. Taxis are convenient in the city. For trips to Linqing Wanyuan Garden and Tangyi Ancient Village, which are further away, chartering a car or booking a ride-share will save time and effort. 💡Tips to avoid pitfalls: The lake embankment is slippery, so be careful not to slip and stay away from unprotected water edges. Do not trust roadside offers for low-priced boat tours and local specialties. Be cautious about following restaurant recommendations from drivers. Western Shandong cuisine has heavy flavors, so order according to your needs. ③ Accommodation recommendations 🏨💤💰 ① Dongchang Old Town homestay 📍 Near Zhugan Alley. CNY 242/night ✨ Close to the old town's daily life, with many local snack shops nearby. It is convenient for travel and offers an immersive experience of the canal old town courtyard atmosphere. ② Lake-view homestay 📍 Near the west bank of Dongchang Lake. CNY 220/night 🛏️ Close to the lake, the environment is quiet and peaceful. You can take a walk around the lake in your spare time and rest comfortably after your tour. ④ Must-try local food 🥢🍲🥧 Shazhen Guada has a crispy crust and rich meat flavor; Linqing Shixiang Noodles come with rich side dishes; Wei's Smoked Chicken is dry, fragrant, and chewy; Gaotang Old Tofu is smooth and flavorful; Linqing Eight Bowls are soft, tender, and mellow; Hollow Glazed Meatballs are sweet and crispy. Taste the flavors of life along the canal in every bite. ⑤ Photography & outfit suggestions 📸👗💐 📸 Photo spots: Shan-Shaan Guild Hall ancient courtyards 🏯, Dongguan Zhugan Alley old town alleys, Linqing Wanyuan Garden corridor and pond views, Ancient Canal Chaoguan riverbank, Tangyi Ancient Village old courtyards. 👗 Outfit suggestions: Liaocheng is 13–24°C in Sept–Oct 🌤️, with a significant temperature difference between day and night. Wear long-sleeved shirts and knitwear during the day, and bring a thin windproof jacket, as it feels cooler by the lake in the evening. Earth tones and simple, elegant colors suit the blue-brick ancient buildings. There are many dirt roads in the alleys and paths by the lake, so prioritize non-slip, comfortable shoes. The outdoor UV rays are strong, so bring a hat and sunglasses. ⑥ Travel tips 🎒💡🍂 Travel preparation: Bring sun protection products 🧴. Carry an umbrella for sun and rain, as the weather on the Western Shandong plains is changeable and there are occasional showers. There are many mosquitoes and insects in the grass by the lake, so bring mosquito repellent. Western Shandong cuisine is oily, so bring stomach medicine if you have a sensitive stomach. Tour reminders: Most cultural and museum venues are closed on Mondays, so check before you go. The alley roads and lake paths are damp, so watch your step. Do not get close to deep water areas when walking along the canal. Pitfall guide: For smoked chicken and donkey meat specialties, prioritize old shops frequented by locals. Be rational when purchasing souvenirs around scenic spots. ⑦ My honest travel experience 💌🍁✨ I originally thought Liaocheng only had the crowded ancient city commercial street, but autumn unlocked the different charms of the Zhugan old alleys, Jiangbei gardens, and ancient villages on the plains. Without the noise and crowds, the canal ancient buildings, autumn water on the lake, and old rural houses make every step a scene, all with the unique autumn atmosphere of the canal water city 🍂. The only small regret of the trip is that there was too much scenery, and I couldn't bear to say goodbye in a hurry.

The Linqing Canal Customs House was a direct government office stationed in Linqing by the imperial court during the Ming and Qing dynasties to oversee canal tariffs. Historical records state: "It was a mandatory stop for grain transport ships and imperial envoys, and the Ministry of Revenue's branch customs office was located there." The Linqing Canal Customs House was founded in the 4th year of the Xuande reign of the Ming Dynasty (1429) and has a history of over 580 years. In the 10th year of the Xuande reign (1435), the Linqing Canal Customs House was upgraded to a branch of the Ministry of Revenue's tax office, establishing five sub-customs stations: Nanshuimen, Fancunchang, Jianzhong, Weijiawan, and Dezhou. During the Wanli reign, the Linqing Customs House collected over 117,000 taels of silver in annual shipping and commercial taxes, ranking first among the eight major canal customs houses in the country. The Linqing Canal Customs House operated until it was abolished in 1930 (the 19th year of the Republic of China). It was the tax office among the eight major canal customs houses of the Ming and Qing dynasties (including the Jiujiang Customs) that was established earliest, closed latest, had the longest history, and made the greatest contribution. As the only typical surviving ancient canal tax institution in China, the Linqing Canal Customs House is an important carrier of canal culture and valuable empirical material for studying the formation and development of the economy, culture, and canal cities in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In June 2001, it was approved by the State Council as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. In 2014, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Day 3: Cultural journey and local flavors 🗼 Morning: Visit the Sheli Pagoda, one of the four great pagodas along the Grand Canal. This 400-year-old pagoda stands by the river. Climb the narrow stairs to overlook the Wei Canal winding like a ribbon, and take a close look at the exquisite brick carvings on the pagoda. 📖 Afternoon: Visit the Ji Xianlin Memorial Hall and the General Zhang Zizhong Memorial Hall to experience the spirit of these great figures. Afterward, head to the old town streets to find food, taste Linqing specialties, and pick out pickles and pastries as souvenirs. ⚠️ Tips 👟 The old town streets of Linqing have many stone paths, so try to wear comfortable flat shoes for easier walking. 🍜 Local specialties like Tuoban Tofu, Shixiang Noodles, and the Eight Great Halal Bowls are worth a try. If you prefer lighter flavors, you can communicate with the restaurant staff in advance. 🕌 When visiting religious sites like mosques, please keep quiet, dress appropriately, and follow the site's visiting rules. 🪜 The stairs inside the Sheli Pagoda are steep and narrow. Elderly people and children should be careful when climbing and assess their physical ability.

Aotouji was first built during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (1522–1566) and is included in the *Dictionary of famous Chinese scenic spots*. Located at the confluence of the Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty sections of the Huitong River, it was built to prevent flood erosion. The *Linqing prefecture annals* (territory, historical sites) records: "Aotouji is located on the central island. The eastern end is paved with stone, protruding like the head of a giant turtle. The Guanyin Pavilion was built on top of it. There are two old sluice gates and two newly opened sluice gates, each divided to the left and right like feet, with the Guangji Bridge trailing behind. Ma Lun, the Ming Dynasty magistrate, inscribed the title 'Aotouji'." The architectural complex is laid out in a four-directional style, currently featuring the Lüzu Hall in the west, the Wanghe Tower in the south, and the Guanyin Pavilion in the east. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, when canal transport was at its peak, scholars and poets often climbed the towers to overlook the canal. Li Dongyang, a Grand Secretary of the Ming Dynasty, once wrote a poem: "Ten miles of homes divide the two banks, high towers and buildings reach the blue clouds. Official boats and merchant ships pass in succession, drums and gongs are heard everywhere. The rushing currents turn back at this shore, the sound of waves echoes like spring thunder day and night. Thousands of households gather in the city, ten thousand shi of grain arrive on sails upon the river." It became a landmark building along the canal and was included in the World Heritage List in 2014. It is a Major historical and cultural site protected at the national level.

commonly known as the North Mosque, was built during the Hongzhi reign of the Ming Dynasty (1488–1505). It covers an area of approximately 20,000 square meters and is a well-preserved ancient architectural complex. It currently features over 80 buildings of various sizes, including a watchtower, moon terrace, main hall, screen wall, and north lecture hall. The front part of the main hall features a four-slope hip roof with ridge ornaments on both ends of the main ridge, while the rear part has double eaves and a mountain-shaped roof peak. The center features an octagonal pyramidal roof with a rear porch, flanked by four-corner pyramidal roofs on each side. The roof slope is relatively steep, creating an imposing and well-arranged appearance. Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level

The Relic Pagoda is located on the east bank of the Wei Canal, north of Linqing City. Construction began in 1611 (the 39th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty) under the direction of Ming official Liu Zuo and was completed nine years later. It is an octagonal, nine-story, brick, pavilion-style pagoda with a wood-like structure. It originally stood 61 meters tall, with a current height of 53.44 meters. The pagoda's base is built with stone slabs, and the exterior eaves feature brick-carved dougong (bracket sets) and ceramic decorations. Each level has four open and four blind doorways. Inside, it retains bluestone spiral staircases and stone tablets commemorating its construction. The sixth level contains inscriptions such as "Xiu Ju Zhong Tian" (Gathering Beauty in the Center of Heaven), and it was once listed among the Eight Views of Linqing as "Bell Ringing on the Pagoda Bank." Along with the Randeng Pagoda in Tongzhou, the Liuhe Pagoda in Hangzhou, and the Wenfeng Pagoda in Yangzhou, it is known as one of the "Four Great Pagodas of the Grand Canal." It is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.

The Linqing City Museum is located opposite the Cultural Center Square in the middle section of Wenquan Road, Linqing City. The first floor features the Linqing History Exhibition, which provides a comprehensive look at the development of this famous canal city, including its role as a key hub for water transport, a tax center during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and its peak prosperity, often described as "surpassing the two capitals" (Beijing and Nanjing). The second floor houses three major thematic exhibitions: the Stele and Stone Carving Exhibition, featuring numerous ancient steles with significant calligraphic value; the Red Revolutionary History Exhibition, showcasing historical materials on Linqing figures such as Zhang Zizhong; and the Linqing Tribute Brick Exhibition (a signature collection), which displays imperial bricks from Linqing used in the Forbidden City and the Ming Tombs, serving as the museum's hallmark exhibits. There are also permanent exhibitions on intangible cultural heritage, calligraphy, painting, and porcelain. The museum houses over 1,400 cultural relics, including 8 second-class national treasures. The estimated visit time is about 50 minutes.

The Ji Xianlin Memorial Hall is located in the Cultural Center on the middle section of Wenquan Road in Linqing City, adjacent to the ancient Grand Canal. It is a state-owned museum that officially opened to the public in April 2010. The memorial hall was established by the Linqing Municipal Party Committee and the municipal government in 2008. Its predecessor was the Ji Xianlin Data Center, established in 1998, which was renamed after relocating and being rebuilt in 2010. The name of the hall was inscribed by calligrapher Ouyang Zhongshi. The building covers an area of 3,341 square meters, with an exhibition area of 2,300 square meters, featuring a simple and solemn architectural style. The memorial hall has two floors. The first floor features 7 exhibition areas, including his childhood and his time studying in Jinan, showcasing his life journey through images and text. The second floor houses exhibition halls for books, manuscripts, and certificates, and includes a restored study scene and displays of his academic achievements. The exhibits include Ji Xianlin's study abroad certificates, manuscripts, works, and personal items from his lifetime, systematically presenting his academic trajectory and patriotism. On Friday evening, amidst the crowds at the high-speed rail station, I suddenly wanted to find a place to relax and unwind. I checked tickets and found four less-known, less-traveled towns within two hours of Zhengzhou. No suffocatingly crowded tourist spots, no cookie-cutter ancient town shopping streets. Instead, there were genuine historical sites, authentic old-world charm, and a truly slow-paced lifestyle. I spent two weeks visiting them and compiled this article for those of you who also crave a short escape. · -- · *📍 Xuchang—An Underrated Dream of the Three Kingdoms** Just half an hour from Zhengzhou by high-speed rail, this ancient capital of Cao Wei is surprisingly quiet. Few tourists, clean streets, and elderly people playing chess under the shade of trees in the old town—it has a relaxed feel unique to 1990s county towns. · *Highlights** · **Cao Wei Ancient City**: Not a crudely rebuilt imitation; the gate tower, blue bricks, and stone lions retain their original layout. The atmosphere is especially enchanting after the lights come on in the evening; taking photos in Hanfu (traditional Han clothing) is a must. · **Chunqiu Tower:** The place where Guan Yu read the Spring and Autumn Annals at night; the ancient building is well-preserved. Quiet and less crowded, perfect for a leisurely stroll. · **Baling Bridge:** The place where Guan Yu bid farewell to Cao Cao and picked up his robe. The water under the bridge has dried up, but the incense at the Guan Yu Temple still burns. Listening to the temple keeper tell stories of the Three Kingdoms is much more interesting than reading travel guides. · **Xuchang Museum:** Free, but the content is substantial. The Han Dynasty portrait bricks are particularly exquisite; so few people that you can practically have the whole place to yourself. · *Itinerary (2 days 1 night)** Day 1: Morning: Xuchang Museum; Afternoon: Chunqiu Tower + Baling Bridge; Evening: Enjoy the night view of the Cao Wei Ancient City and have dinner there. Day 2: Morning: You can visit West Lake Park or the nearby Cao Cao Prime Minister's Residence (optional if time is limited); Lunch: a bowl of hot tofu; Afternoon: Return home. · *Food Recommendation** · Hot Tofu: So tender you need a spoon to scoop it out, topped with chili oil and chive blossoms; a bowl costs only a few yuan. · **Large Pot Stew:** A stew served with steamed buns, cheap and filling, perfect for winter. · **Fried Dried Tofu Skin:** A specialty of Xuchang, delicious whether served cold or stewed with meat. A good souvenir. · ***Travel Tips** · **Cao Wei Ancient City:** Free, but Chunqiu Tower and Baling Bridge require tickets. Combined tickets offer discounts. · **Xuchang City:** Small, with many shared electric scooters, making transportation convenient. · **Weekends are a bit more crowded, but never to the point of being congested, offering a pleasant experience. · -- · *📍 Handan—The Forgotten Ancient Capital of Zhao** Located in the southernmost part of Hebei, the capital of the Zhao state with a history of 3,000 years. Compared to neighboring trendy cities, it's like a well-worn history book, quietly waiting to be explored. The density of historical sites is astonishing, and most haven't been commercialized. · *Highlights of the Trip** · **Congtai Park**: The site of the Wuling Congtai Terrace from the Zhao State period. Ancient trees tower within the park, and locals stroll with their birds and sing operas, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Climbing Congtai offers panoramic views of Handan city. · **Huiche Lane**: The narrow, old alley where Lin Xiangru famously turned his chariot around to let Lian Po pass. The adjacent city wall, built during the Ming Dynasty, has a weathered feel. · **Xiangtangshan Grottoes** (North Xiangtangshan): Much less crowded than the Longmen Grottoes. Carved during the Northern Qi Dynasty, the Buddha statues have ancient and serene faces. The murals of flying apsaras inside the caves are well-preserved and breathtaking, rivaling the four major grottoes in their grandeur. · **Guangfu Ancient City**: A water city in Yongnian District, surrounded by water on all sides, with intact city walls. The city also contains the former residence of Wu Yuxiang, a favorite spot for Tai Chi enthusiasts. A stroll along the city walls in the evening, watching the sunset over the moat, is particularly therapeutic. · *Itinerary (2 Days 1 Night)** Day 1: Morning: Congtai Park; Afternoon: Huiche Lane + Zhao Wangcheng Ruins Park (free admission, experience the desolation of the rammed earth platform); Evening: Explore the area near Meile City and try donkey meat sausage. Day 2: Morning: Visit Guangfu Ancient City (or Xiangtangshan Grottoes, choose one; Xiangtangshan is a bit further but more worthwhile); Afternoon: Return home. · *Food Recommendations** · Donkey Meat Sausage: A Handan specialty, hot sausage sandwiched in a flatbread, rich in meat flavor. · Linzhang Lamb Soup: White broth and tender meat, served with a baked flatbread, very comforting. · Handan Crispy Fish: Braised until the bones are tender, even the bones are edible. · Doumo (Soybean curd soup): A breakfast staple, like porridge or a thick soup, served with fried dough sticks or clay oven flatbread. · *Travel Notes** · Guangfu Ancient City is a bit far from the city center, about a 40-minute taxi ride, so it's best to combine it into one day. · Xiangtangshan Grottoes are divided into North and South sections; the North Xiangtangshan Grottoes are more exquisite, and the entrance fee is not expensive. · Public transportation in Handan is not very convenient; it is recommended to take a taxi or drive. Attractions within the city are within walking distance. · -- · *📍 Liaocheng—A Pearl Forgotten by the Grand Canal** Liaocheng is a water town in western Shandong, north of the Yangtze River. Dongchang Lake is larger than West Lake. It's unusually quiet for a prefecture-level city; it feels like a forgotten Jiangnan water town, yet it possesses the grandeur of the North. · *Highlights** · **Dongchang Lake**: A complete walk around the lake takes most of the day; a boat trip is available. The ancient city in the center of the lake is surrounded by water, its layout resembling a miniature phoenix, but much quieter. · **Guangyue Tower**: A Ming Dynasty building, it is as famous as the Yellow Crane Tower and Yueyang Tower, but far less well-known. Climbing to the top offers a panoramic view of the entire ancient city and the lake. · **Shanxi-Shaanxi Guild Hall**: A guild hall built by Shanxi and Shaanxi merchants during the Qing Dynasty, featuring exquisite brick, wood, and stone carvings. This level of Qing Dynasty commercial architecture would be fenced off and have expensive entrance fees elsewhere, but here you can enter at a very affordable price. · **Grand Canal Museum**: Learn about the connection between Liaocheng and the Grand Canal. The oracle bone inscriptions and bronzes of Yin Ruins give this city a profound sense of history. Not many tourists, but every place is worth a special trip. · *Highlights** · **Yin Ruins Site**: The holy land of Chinese archaeology. The bronze artifacts and oracle bone inscriptions unearthed from the tomb of Fu Hao are truly remarkable; only by seeing them in person can one truly understand the meaning of "a single oracle bone astonishing the world." The museum is well-designed, and guided tours are free and well worth attending. · **Wenfeng Pagoda**: A landmark of Anyang, its unique shape, wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, allows visitors to climb it. The view from the top is expansive. · **Cangxiang Street**: A quaint and charming street with old houses featuring blue bricks and gray tiles, untouched by excessive commercialization. There are some cafes and handicraft shops, perfect for a leisurely stroll. · **Chinese Character Museum**: Free but requires reservations. Day 2: Morning: Visit Wenfeng Pagoda, explore the surrounding old town, try local flat rice noodles, Afternoon: Return home. · *Food Recommendations** · **Bianfen Cai (扁粉菜):** A common breakfast in Anyang, this dish features sweet potato noodles with blood cubes and greens in a rich broth. A fried dough stick is a great addition. · **Xuegao (血糕):** Steamed buckwheat noodles with pig's blood, this dish is pan-fried until crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and is especially fragrant with garlic sauce. · **Sanbuzhan (三不沾):** This dish doesn't stick to the plate, chopsticks, or teeth. It has a sweet and glutinous texture, like a softer version of rice cake. · **Anyang Sanxun (安阳三熏):** Smoked chicken, smoked eggs, and smoked pig's head meat. The strong smoky flavor makes it a good souvenir. · *Travel Tips** · **Yinxu (殷墟)**: Tickets are not cheap, but worth it. A guided tour is recommended, otherwise, it can be difficult to understand. · **Chinese Character Museum (中国文字博物馆):** Advance booking is required via their official WeChat account. Closed on Mondays. · **Anyang East Railway Station (安阳东站)**: Yinxu is a distance away, about a 20-minute taxi ride. It's recommended to make Yinxu your first stop on your itinerary. · -- These four cities are not large; two days and one night are sufficient to explore them thoroughly. They lack the filters of online celebrities, but their authentic sense of life is more reassuring. Pick a weekend, buy a ticket, and go relax, wander around, or enjoy a good meal. On Friday evening, amidst the crowds at the high-speed rail station, I suddenly wanted to find a different place to unwind. I checked tickets and found four less-known small towns within two hours of Zhengzhou. No suffocatingly crowded tourist spots, no cookie-cutter ancient town shopping streets. Instead, there are genuine historical sites, authentic old-world charm, and a truly slow-paced lifestyle. · *Highlights of the Trip** · **Cao Wei Ancient City**: Not a hastily rebuilt imitation; the gate tower, blue bricks, and stone lions retain their original layout. The atmosphere is particularly enchanting after the lights come on in the evening, making it a perfect spot for photos in Hanfu (traditional Han clothing). · **Chunqiu Tower**: The place where Guan Yu read the Spring and Autumn Annals at night; the ancient architecture is well-preserved. Quiet and less crowded, perfect for a leisurely stroll. · **Baling Bridge**: The place where Guan Yu bid farewell to Cao Cao and picked up his robe. The water under the bridge has dried up, but the incense at the Guan Yu Temple still burns. Listening to the temple keeper tell stories of the Three Kingdoms is much more interesting than reading travel guides. · **Xuchang Museum**: Free, but the content is substantial. The Han Dynasty portrait bricks are particularly exquisite; so few people that you could practically have the whole place to yourself. · *Itinerary (2 Days 1 Night)** Day 1: Morning: Xuchang Museum; Afternoon: Chunqiu Tower + Baling Bridge; Evening: Enjoy the night view of Cao Wei Ancient City and have dinner in the ancient city. Day 2: In the morning, you can visit West Lake Park or the nearby Cao Cao Prime Minister's Residence (optional if time is limited). Have a bowl of hot tofu for lunch, then head back in the afternoon. · *Food Recommendations** · Hot Tofu: So tender you can scoop it with a spoon, topped with chili oil and chive blossoms, only a few yuan a bowl. · Stewed Vegetables: A stew with steamed buns, cheap and filling, perfect for winter. · Dried Tofu Skin: A specialty of Xuchang, delicious whether served cold or stewed with meat; buy some as souvenirs. · *Travel Notes** · The Cao Wei Ancient City is free, but Chunqiu Tower and Baling Bridge require tickets; combined tickets offer discounts. · Xuchang is a small city with many shared electric bikes, making transportation convenient. · Weekends are a bit more crowded, but not to the point of being congested; the experience is very pleasant. · -- · *📍 Handan—The Forgotten Ancient Capital of Zhao** Located in the southernmost part of Hebei, the capital of Zhao with a history of three thousand years. Compared to the neighboring trendy cities, this place is like a well-worn history book, quietly waiting for you to explore. The density of historical sites is astonishing, and most haven't been commercialized. · *Highlights** · **Congtai Park**: The site of the Wuling Congtai Terrace from the Zhao State period. The adjacent city wall dates back to the Ming Dynasty; touching it allows you to feel the weight of time. · **Xiangtangshan Grottoes** (North Xiangtangshan): Much less crowded than the Longmen Grottoes, carved during the Northern Qi Dynasty. The Buddha statues have ancient and serene faces. The murals of flying apsaras inside the caves are well-preserved, their grandeur comparable to the four major grottoes. · **Guangfu Ancient City**: A water city in Yongnian District, surrounded by water on all sides, with intact city walls. Within the city walls is the former residence of Wu Yuxiang, a favorite among Tai Chi enthusiasts. An evening stroll along the city walls, watching the sunset over the moat, is particularly therapeutic. · *Itinerary (2 days 1 night)** Day 1: Morning: Congtai Park; Afternoon: Huiche Lane + Zhao Wangcheng Ruins Park (free admission, experience the desolate grandeur of the rammed earth platform); Evening: Explore the area near Meile City and try donkey meat sausage. Day 2: Morning: Visit Guangfu Ancient City (or Xiangtangshan Grottoes, choose one; Xiangtangshan is slightly further but more worthwhile); Afternoon: Return home. · *Food Recommendations** · Donkey Meat Sausage: A Handan specialty, served hot with a flatbread, rich in meat flavor. · Linzhang Lamb Soup: White broth and tender meat, served with a baked flatbread, very comforting. · Handan Crispy Fish: Braised until the bones are tender, even the bones are edible. · Doumo (Soybean curd soup): A breakfast staple, like porridge or a thick soup, served with fried dough sticks or oven-baked flatbread. · *Travel Tips** · Guangfu Ancient City is a bit far from the city center, about a 40-minute taxi ride. It's best to combine it into a day trip. · Xiangtangshan Grottoes are divided into North and South sections; the North Xiangtangshan is more exquisite, and the entrance fee is reasonable. · Public transportation in Handan is not very convenient; taking a taxi or driving is recommended. · *Highlights** · **Dongchang Lake**: A complete walk around the lake takes about half a day; a boat trip is available. The ancient city in the center of the lake is surrounded by water, its layout resembling a miniature phoenix, but much quieter. · **Guangyue Tower**: A Ming Dynasty building, it's as famous as the Yellow Crane Tower and Yueyang Tower, but far less well-known. Climbing to the rooftop offers a panoramic view of the entire ancient city and the lake, a truly magnificent sight. · **Shanxi-Shaanxi Guild Hall**: Built during the Qing Dynasty by Shanxi and Shaanxi merchants, this guild hall boasts exquisite brick, wood, and stone carvings. Such a high-quality Qing Dynasty commercial building would normally be fenced off and have expensive entrance fees elsewhere, but here you can enter at a very affordable price. · **Grand Canal Museum**: Learn about the connection between Liaocheng and the Grand Canal. Less crowded, with a rich collection of exhibits, it's perfect for families with children. · *Itinerary (2 days 1 night)** Day 1: Morning: Guangyue Tower; Afternoon: Shanxi-Shaanxi Guild Hall; Evening: Sunset at Dongchang Lake; Evening: Stroll through the ancient city at night. Day 2: Morning: Boat trip on Dongchang Lake; Afternoon: Grand Canal Museum, or find a teahouse for tea; Afternoon: Return trip. · *Food Recommendation** · Liaocheng Guada: Similar to fried meat dumplings, crispy on the outside and fragrant with filling; be sure to eat it while it's hot. · Linqing Mixed Noodles: Over a dozen toppings are laid out on the table; mix it yourself – a truly ceremonial experience. · Gaotang Donkey Meat: The texture is different from Hebei donkey meat; it's firmer and can be vacuum-packed for takeaway. · Ba Pi Guozi: A type of fried dough stick, fried until golden and crispy, a perfect match with soy milk. · *Travel Tips** · Dongchang Lake cruises offer different routes; the lakeside sightseeing route is the most cost-effective. · Guangyue Tower and Shanxi-Shaanxi Guild Hall are very close, just a few minutes' walk apart. · There are many guesthouses in the ancient city; staying overnight enhances the experience, and you can enjoy the city's night view. · -- · *📍 Anyang – The Place Where Writing Begins** The northernmost city in Henan Province, possibly one of the oldest places in Chinese civilization. Along the Grand Canal in Linqing, Shandong, lies a niche hidden gem that has stood for 600 years: Aotouji. According to records, Aotouji was first built in the 15th year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1417). The entire complex features a brick-and-wood structure with an antique charm. It was named for its high terrain, which resembles a turtle head reaching into the water, and is known as "Aoji Ningxiu" (Aoji's Concentrated Beauty), one of the 16 scenic spots of Linqing. Standing before Aotouji, you can truly touch the history of the Grand Canal, a time when its prosperity rivaled that of the two capitals. Although the scenic area is small, it is well worth a visit. The main building, Guanyin Pavilion, is built on a high brick platform with a passageway underneath, representing a classic northern Ming Dynasty brick-and-wood structure. Climb up to Wanghe Tower to see the old course of the Grand Canal winding by. Although the waterway is now silted up and no longer sees the thousands of sails of the past, standing on the tower, you can almost see the scenes of old: "Thousands of households gather in the city, and ships carrying ten thousand hu arrive on the river." The characters "Du Zhan" (Sole Possession) embedded above the archway carry the auspicious meaning of "coming out on top." Today, this has become a must-visit spot for many to pray for good fortune. The courtyard features a dedicated "Du Zhan" photo wall, decorated with themes of academic success and pink carp leaping over waves, and is hung with red ribbons, creating a wonderful atmosphere for seeking good luck. Not far away is the Linqing Grand Canal Tax Office, just a ten-minute walk away, which you can visit at the same time.

📍 About Liaocheng Located in western Shandong Province at the junction of Hebei, Shandong, and Henan, Liaocheng is hailed as the "Water City North of the Yangtze and the Pearl of Two Rivers." It is a renowned national historical and cultural city 👍🏻. Founded in the Spring and Autumn Period, Liaocheng boasts over 5,000 years of civilization, featuring more than 400 historical sites and 1 World Cultural Heritage site (the Grand Canal). Many stories from classical masterpieces like the *Water Margin* took place here. Born of water, the city is home to 39 rivers, with the Yellow River, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and the Eastern Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project all flowing through. The 6.3-square-kilometer Dongchang Lake embraces the ancient city, creating a unique "city floating on water" vibe 🌊. With four distinct seasons, the best time to visit is from May to October. The weather is perfect for boating on the lake, exploring the ancient city at night, and grabbing some authentic local street food while soaking in the water city's charm ✨. 🏢 Accommodation Recommendations ✅ Dongchang Lake / Ancient City Area: Stay right by the lake or inside the ancient city for stunning waterfront views right out your window. It's within walking distance to core spots like Guangyue Tower and the Shan-Shaan Guild Hall. ✅ City Center (Dongchangfu District): Your best bet for dining, shopping, and getting around. You'll find plenty of star-rated and chain hotels (like Home Inn, Hanting, and JI Hotel), plus super easy bus access to all the sights. ✅ Linqing City Area: The perfect base for checking out Ao Tou Ji, Wan Yuan, and the Canal Customs (Chao Guan). Hotels here are mostly budget-friendly or business-oriented. 🚙 Getting There & Around Getting Here: There are currently no direct flights from Hong Kong or Macau to Liaocheng. Transferring via Jinan or Qingdao is the way to go. You can fly ✈️ directly to Jinan or Qingdao, then hop on a high-speed train 🚄 to Liaocheng (about 1 hour from Jinan and 3 hours from Qingdao). Liaocheng Station and Liaocheng West Station are the main railway hubs. Local Transit: 🚌 Bus: Fare is 2 RMB. You can use Alipay/WeChat transit QR codes for city buses. 🚕 Taxi: Fares start at 7 RMB. It gets breezy in spring and autumn, so a windbreaker is a good idea. ✅ Route Planning: The Zhonghua Water Ancient City isn't huge, but attractions are spread out. Places like Guangyue Tower and Qixian Shrine require separate tickets. We recommend mapping your route in advance or grabbing a combo ticket. ✅ Buying Ejiao: Dong'e Ejiao is a famous local tonic.
