This year, I did something quite impulsive—I specifically flew to Lvliang, Shanxi, not for anything else but to visit Lijia Mountain Village and see the original scene of the painting by Wu Guanzhong that sold for 27 million HKD at auction. When I arrived, I realized that the Qikou Ancient Town + Lijia Mountain route is the most underrated one-day trip in all of Shanxi, bar none. 📍 Basic Information (Must-Read Before the Trip) · Location: Qikou Ancient Town, Lin County, Lvliang City + Lijia Mountain Village just 3 km from the ancient town · How to get there: Highly recommend driving yourself. It’s about 50 km from Lvliang city center/Lishi, around 1.5 hours by car, with the last stretch being a mountain road. You can also hire a car or take a motorcycle taxi from Qikou Town up the mountain. Some people hike up (about 40 minutes, not recommended if you have luggage). · Tickets: Qikou Ancient Town is free to visit; Lijia Mountain Village is free to enter, and the West Wealthy Manor costs 2 RMB to enter (preserving Ming and Qing dynasty carved windows and an Eight Immortals table); Heilong Temple is at the town’s highest point and is also free. · Duration: Half a day to a full day is enough for both places, with a very slow and relaxed pace. 🗺️ My Route (Completed in One Day Without Backtracking) Morning | Settle in at Qikou Ancient Town first Stroll slowly along the main street of the ancient town and walk by the Yellow River—the site of the old Jin merchant dock. The Yellow River flows right next to the town, with centuries-old docks, shops, cave dwellings, and Heilong Temple all in their original places. Climb Heilong Temple for a panoramic view of the town bending along the Yellow River. The historical destiny of the "First Town of the Nine Bends of the Yellow River" really needs no filter. Noon | Have a simple meal in the ancient town There are still some locals living in the town. Restaurants are few but sufficient and reasonably priced. Don’t expect fine dining; the charm here lies in its unpolished, authentic roughness. Afternoon | Hire a car up to Lijia Mountain (the highlight 🔥) It’s about a 10-minute drive from Qikou up the mountain to the entrance of Lijia Mountain Village. The moment I entered, I was stunned—on a 70-degree steep slope, cave dwellings stacked up 11 layers, like a "Potala Palace of the Loess Plateau." The village is small; one hour of slow walking and photography is enough. Three must-do things: 1. West Wealthy Manor (2 RMB): Enter to see the layout of Ming and Qing dynasty cave dwellings, carved window lattices, thick earthen walls, and the Eight Immortals table—you can feel the texture of time. 2. Walk up along the main alley: No need to rush. Elders sit by the walls basking in the sun, painters sketch under the eaves, and chickens stroll by your feet—this is the most touching part. 3. Find the sketching spot near "Wanghe Tower": This is the exact perspective where Wu Guanzhong set up his easel, overlooking the layered cave dwellings and ravines—you finally understand why he called this place a "peach blossom land isolated from the world." 💡 Practical Tips & Pitfalls (Hard-Earned Lessons) 1. Don’t treat this as a "tourist attraction": The value of Qikou and Lijia Mountain lies in the living sense of history—locals still live here, shops remain old, and the Yellow River is still wild. Don’t expect refined restoration; what you want is the raw authenticity. 2. Transportation: The road up to Lijia Mountain is narrow and winding. If you’re a new driver, don’t force it. Hiring a car from Qikou Town is safer (about 30-50 RMB round trip). You can only walk inside the village. 3. Wear the right shoes: The paths are all dirt, stone slabs, and steep slopes. Non-slip sneakers are the minimum. 4. Best seasons: Spring and autumn (spring for the vast loess landscape, autumn for colorful forests). Summer is exposed and hot, so bring sun protection; winter is stunning after snow but slippery. 5. Food and lodging: Staying in Qikou has more atmosphere than Lishi (cave dwelling homestays cost around 100-200 RMB), but conditions are simple. Bring a power bank; the town’s ATMs and pharmacies are limited. 6. Respect first: Before photographing the elders in the courtyards, smile and ask for permission. Standing at the Wanghe Tower looking down, I suddenly understood why Wu Guanzhong was willing to spend an entire autumn here for one painting. Humans don’t live a thousand years, but when you stand on the loess slope, touch the thick earthen walls of the cave dwellings, and hear the Yellow River wind through the alleys—that feeling of being gently tapped on the shoulder by a thousand years of civilization is priceless. They stand silently on the edges of the loess cliffs, weathered and rustic, yet they connect the thousand-year history of border defense in the Jin-Shaan Grand Canyon. As mentioned in my previous travelogue, "Laoniuwan" is where the Yellow River meets the Great Wall, and the beacon tower there marks the starting point of the Ming Dynasty border defense line. However, it is not an isolated structure; it is a vital part of the Pianguan Great Wall defense system. In ancient times, soldiers relied on the natural barrier of the Yellow River, the Great Wall, and the beacon towers along the river to build a three-dimensional defense line. Once enemy activity was detected, smoke signals would be passed along, guarding the peace of the Jin-Shaan border and the Central Plains. There are no streets full of trendy milk tea shops or cheap trinkets. Prices are on par with local towns, and you can spend 2 or 3 days there for just a few hundred yuan. It's peaceful and comfortable. ✨ Jiangxi Shangrao Hekou Ancient Town This is truly the "First Town of the Wanli Tea Road." Traces of its former prosperity are hidden in the polished bluestone paths. Now, the streets are filled with locals, and you rarely hear hawkers calling out. You can clearly hear the wind blowing over the Xin River. Highlights The Ming and Qing dynasty docks along the Xin River. At sunset, the light spreads across the river, and with the wooden stilt houses on the side, it's atmospheric for photos. The Ming and Qing ancient street stretches for several kilometers. Old shops still retain their original plaques. Occasionally, you'll come across umbrella repair shops or barbershops that have been open for decades, full of local life. Ehu Academy, a 10-minute drive from the ancient town, is where Zhu Xi once lectured. It's shaded by ancient cypress trees and so quiet you can hear the sound of turning pages. Highlights Heping Ancient Street, paved with cobblestones, is lined with old houses that were shops in the front and homes in the back. Tofu workshops and oil pressing workshops that have been open for decades still keep their old crafts. The Daifu Mansion from the Qing Dynasty has wood and stone carvings on the lintels so detailed you can see the patterns. You can enter without paying extra. Jukui Tower outside the ancient town offers a view of the entire town's tiled roofs from the top. The distant mountain scenery wrapped in cooking smoke makes for a very open view. The cobblestone roads are very slippery on rainy days, so don't just focus on taking photos while walking. ✨ Shanxi Lüliang Qikou Ancient Town A living old water and land port by the Yellow River. It hasn't been renovated into brand-new faux-ancient buildings. Along the street are authentic cave dwellings. Local grandpas sit by the Yellow River smoking and chatting. Staying in a cave dwelling for a night costs only a few dozen yuan. The foot traffic during the National Day holiday is less than a fraction of Pingyao's. Highlights Qikou Ancient Street, which stretches along the Yellow River, has stone paths polished smooth by the carriages and horses of the past. Old-brand shops still remain on the sides. You can see the Yellow River rushing by just by looking down. Li Jia Shan Village, a 20-minute drive from the ancient town, has layers of cave dwellings embedded in the loess slopes. Wu Guanzhong once praised it as a miracle like a Han tomb. It's spectacular to look at from the slope. The Black Dragon Temple at the highest point of the ancient town offers a view of the entire Yellow River bend from the temple gate. Most cave dwelling guesthouses are on slopes and don't have elevators, so keep your luggage light. ✨ Sichuan Leshan Luocheng Ancient Town This is truly a backyard garden for locals. The core boat-shaped street looks like a ship docked on a hillside. The entire street is covered by cool verandas that shelter from wind and rain, filled with grandpas and grandmas drinking tea and playing cards. A cup of tea to sit for an afternoon is only CNY 5. There are no tourist traps here. During the National Day holiday, there are fewer tourists than locals just hanging out. Highlights The boat-shaped old street is the soul of the entire ancient town. The cool verandas are filled with tea stalls. Ear cleaning services and sugar-coated hawthorn sellers all cater to regular customers. The local atmosphere is undeniable. The ancient opera stage in the middle of the street offers free Sichuan opera performances during festivals. You can listen while sitting at a tea stall. Luocheng Confucian Temple, a few hundred meters from the main street, has red walls and black tiles and is very quiet. There are few tourists, making it great for photos. Itinerary 1 day is enough, perfect for adding to a Leshan food tour. Arrive in the morning, find a tea stall, squeeze in among the locals, watch cards, and relax. Have some snacks for lunch, visit the Confucian Temple and stroll the old street in the afternoon, and head back to the city in the evening for some Qiao Jiao beef. Tips The entire ancient town is completely free, with no paid attractions. Don't look for a fancy shop for tea; just sit wherever there are many locals. The taste and price are both honest. Tea stall seats are tight during holidays, but since they are all locals relaxing, you will never encounter the situation of not being able to move in popular ancient towns. None of these places have tourist traps. You can have a very comfortable trip with just a thousand yuan or so.
