The residential buildings here vary in shape, from luxurious Qing dynasty residences to ordinary cave dwellings, and have existed silently on the land of Shanxi for hundreds of years. Standing at a high point and looking out, the mountains and buildings blend perfectly, with rows of cave dwellings stacked layer upon layer, creating a magnificent scene. #2026New Year As I stepped into Jeokgui Gasan Village, I was struck by the sight of red clay buildings stacked one on top of the other along the hillside. The village resembled a giant red clay sculpture. The alleyways were tinged with red clay, and the walls of the buildings bore natural creases, giving the impression of having endured the test of time. Each house had a unique design, with doors and windows of high artistic value. The villagers' lives were also simple and peaceful. Jeokgui Gasan Village is a place where nature and humanity are perfectly in harmony, and my time here was a special experience that brought peace to my heart.

#2026New Year Arriving at Jeokgu Ancient Town, I was captivated by the unique charm of this ancient village, flanked by the Yellow River. The old buildings are built of stone and earth, giving them a sturdy yet rustic feel. The narrow, winding alleyways were a delight to walk, offering glimpses of the past. Boats moored along the riverbank, and the bustling fishermen bobbing about, created a picturesque scene. The villagers were also friendly, and listening to their stories brought the history of Jeokgu Ancient Town vividly to life. It was a place where time seemed to stand still, a journey I will never forget.

Famous painter Wu Guanzhong’s painting of Lijia Village sold for 27 million HKD in Hong Kong. Bringing the kids to Lüliang, we finally got to take a photo with this “sky-high priced masterpiece”! This place is seriously an underrated treasure for family trips. The two-day, one-night itinerary perfectly blends nature and culture. The kids had a blast, and I enjoyed taking photos to my heart’s content~ 📅 Day 1️⃣: Strolling the Ancient Town + Yellow River Scenery ⏱️08:30-11:00 Qikou Ancient Town Take the kids to explore the Ming and Qing dynasty commercial buildings. The “Changxing Shop” gatehouse is super nostalgic for photos. The kids wearing little Hanfu standing at the door instantly turn into ancient-style youngsters~ The stone steps at the Yellow River dock corner are a popular photo spot on Xiaohongshu. Sitting the kids on the steps with the rushing Yellow River behind creates an amazing atmosphere! Tianjulong Trading Company is the site of a Jin merchant bank. The second-floor window frame offers a perfect composition to overlook the ancient town street scene and experience Jin merchant culture~ For breakfast, be sure to try the “Qikou Bowl Tuo” at the old street entrance. Adding chili makes it even more fragrant. The kids ate a whole bowl and called it delicious~ ⏱️11:30-13:00 Heilong Temple The best photo time is at 11 AM when sunlight shines on the opera stage~ Find the temple caretaker to unlock the backyard viewing platform, where you can overlook the Yellow River’s S-bend. Bring the kids to feel the grandeur of the Mother River and tell them stories about the Yellow River—very meaningful~ ⏱️13:30-14:30 Lunch Recommended dishes at “Yellow River Family” are spicy pot fish and Helengzi (potato balls). The fish is tender, and the potato balls are soft and glutinous. Many people traveling in Shanxi miss this place, and even locals don’t know what’s fun about Lvliang~ Before the trip, when I searched for Lvliang tourism, 80% of the recommendations were for Lijiashan Village, and 20% for Qikou Ancient Town next to Lijiashan Village. So for Lvliang tourism, I only recommend these two places.
