Winter completely changes the way I see a destination. I’ve traveled to a few cold weather countries, but three stood out for very different reasons. Finland was probably the most magical. I stayed around Rovaniemi, where everything looked like a Christmas postcard. I also spent time in Levi, surrounded by snowy forests, and had one of those unforgettable evenings waiting for the Northern Lights. The cold was intense, but somehow I didn’t mind. Japan gave me a completely different winter experience. Sapporo was my favorite, especially with its snowy streets and warm bowls of ramen waiting everywhere. I also loved visiting Otaru, where the quiet canals looked beautiful under the snow. A winter trip to Hakuba would be perfect if you’re into skiing. Then there’s Switzerland. I took the train through the Alps and spent time around Zermatt and Lucerne. Seeing the mountains covered in snow from a train window was honestly one of the highlights of my trip. If I had to pick just one, I’d choose Finland for the atmosphere. But for scenery, Japan and Switzerland are hard to beat. #finland #rovaniemi #japan #sapporo #switzerland #zermatt

If you’re dreaming of a fairytale winter in Finland, these 10 spots are absolutely worth saving to your travel list. ✨ ① Rovaniemi 🎅 No first trip to Finland is complete without visiting Santa Claus Village! Cross the Arctic Circle, meet Santa in person, and book reindeer or husky sleigh rides for the ultimate festive atmosphere. 📍 Lapland, Finland ✨ Highlights: Santa Claus Village, Arctic Circle, winter activities 💡 Santa Claus Village is open year-round, though shop and activity hours vary. ② Levi ⛷️ If you want skiing combined with convenience, Levi is the top choice. Spend your days skiing or snowshoeing, and join Northern Lights tours by night. It’s perfect for travelers who want to focus on winter sports and activities. 📍 Kittilä Region, Lapland ✨ Highlights: Ski resorts, snow activities, Aurora hunting 💡 Best reached via Kittilä Airport. ③ Saariselkä 🌌 A landscape of snowy plains, hills, and forests offers a tranquil Arctic experience. Stay for a few nights to soak it all in. You'll find plenty of glass igloo accommodations here, and you can hike up Kaunispää Hill for incredible views! 📍 Northern Lapland ✨ Highlights: Glass igloos, sledding tracks, winter hiking 💡 Reachable via Ivalo Airport; remember that staying in a glass igloo doesn’t guarantee an Aurora sighting. ④ Inari 🦌 For a more peaceful vibe in Northern Finland, head to Inari. Admire the winter scenery of Lake Inari and visit the Siida Museum to learn about Sámi culture and Arctic nature. 📍 Shores of Lake Inari ✨ Highlights: Lakeside scenery, Sámi culture, Northern Lights 💡 Pairs well with a trip to Saariselkä; always book ice activities with professional guides. ⑤ Kemi 🚢 Cruising through frozen seas on an icebreaker is a truly unique Finnish winter experience! Some tours even offer the chance to wear thermal floating suits and drift in the icy waters. 📍 Along the Gulf of Bothnia, NW Finland ✨ Highlights: Sampo Icebreaker, ice floating experience 💡 Check cruise schedules for floating requirements and age/height restrictions. ⑥ Riisitunturi National Park 🌲 Thick ice and snow weigh down the spruce trees, transforming them into adorable "Snow Monsters"—a dream for winter photographers! Against a pastel blue sky, the entire forest looks like something out of a fairy tale. 📍 Posio Region ✨ Highlights: Snow monster forest, snowshoeing, winter photography 💡 The snow effect depends on the weather; plan your hike to make the most of limited winter daylight. ⑦ Ruka-Kuusamo 🏂 Outdoor enthusiasts will love this area! It offers a wide variety of skiing, forest exploration, and reindeer experiences, and it's a great base for exploring nearby natural wonders. 📍 Northeastern Finland ✨ Highlights: Skiing, winter activities, forest scenery 💡 Reachable via Kuusamo Airport. ⑧ Ranua Wildlife Park 🐾 Follow the forest trails to meet Arctic animals in a snowy setting. The capital is perfect for exploring architecture, browsing design boutiques, enjoying local coffee, and experiencing an authentic Finnish sauna. It’s convenient to visit at the start or end of your trip. 📍 Southern Finland ✨ Highlights: City architecture, seaside saunas, winter city walks 💡 Snow cover isn't guaranteed in the south, so don't always expect a "white city" landscape. ⑩ Porvoo 🏘️ Colorful wooden houses, cobblestone streets, and red riverside warehouses give this old town a charming Nordic feel. It’s especially magical under a layer of snow—perfect for warming up with a hot chocolate in a cozy cafe! 📍 East of Helsinki ✨ Highlights: Old Town, red riverside warehouses, cafes 💡 Ideal for a day trip from Helsinki. 📌 Winter Travel Tips ❄️ For the best snow activities, aim for December through March; actual conditions vary by region and year. 🌌 Seeing the Northern Lights requires darkness, clear skies, and solar activity. Stay several nights in the north to increase your chances. 🗺️ This is a curated list; I don't recommend trying to hit all 10 spots in just one week. Combining Helsinki with one or two northern bases will make for a more comfortable trip. 🎄 Remember to book accommodation (especially glass igloos) and popular activities well in advance for Christmas and New Year! Save this list and start planning your Finnish winter escape! 🤍

Skiing amidst the snow forests of Lapland. ⛷️ Levi, Finland 🇫🇮 Skiing through Lapland’s snowy forests with a chance to catch the Northern Lights 🌌❄️ Our next destination is Levi, Finland 🤍 This time, we’re trading the towering peaks of the Alps for the enchanting atmosphere of Finnish Lapland—think dense pine forests, pristine white snow, and those iconic Arctic winter nights. ⛷️ Skiing Through the Snowy Forest Levi offers slopes for all levels, but the real highlight is the scenery. You’ll be surrounded by pine trees so heavily draped in snow they look completely white. At times, it feels like you’re gliding through a literal ice kingdom. 🚡 Take the Gondola for Epic Lapland Views Hop on the gondola and look back as you ascend; you’ll see vast forests and a blanket of white stretching to the horizon. It’s a distinct landscape that sets it apart from typical high-altitude alpine resorts. 🌌 Chasing the Northern Lights One of the best things about Levi is the "two-for-one" experience. After a day on the slopes, you can spend your night hunting for the Aurora Borealis. If the sky is clear, it’s truly magical ✨ 🐕 Husky Safari Adventures Swap your skis for a dog sled and dash through the snowy woods. It’s the ultimate Lapland experience and adds a wonderful variety to your trip. 🦌 Reindeer & Local Lapland Culture Lapland’s culture is deeply tied to reindeer. There are plenty of tours that allow you to connect with these gentle creatures and learn about the local way of life. 🔥 Cozy Up in a Glass Cabin For an unforgettable stay, book a glass cabin or a snow-dusted cottage. You can stay warm and cozy while gazing at the winter sky right from your bed. 🧖‍♀️ Relax in a Finnish Sauna There’s no better way to end a day of skiing than with a traditional Finnish sauna. It’s the perfect way to unwind before heading back out to check for the Northern Lights. Levi is perfect for anyone who wants a ski holiday that offers so much more than just the slopes. From snowy forests and huskies to reindeer and saunas, you get the full Arctic experience plus the chance to see the Aurora 🇫🇮🤍

⛷️Levi, Finnish Lapland 🇫🇮 Ski through snow-draped forests and catch the Northern Lights all in one day ❄️🌌 If you want to trade typical Alpine views for the pristine, white landscapes of Lapland—where pine forests are heavy with snow and the night sky feels magical—Levi is the place to go 🤍. As one of Finland's premier ski resorts, it offers a vibe that is distinctively different from Zermatt, Niseko, or St. Moritz. ⛷️ Skiing Through Snowy Forests Levi features trails for all skill levels, so even beginners can join in. Some runs wind through dense pine forests where every tree is blanketed in thick white snow, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a real-life winter world. 🌲 See the Snow-Covered Forests One of Lapland’s most iconic sights is the pine trees weighed down by so much snow they turn into otherworldly sculptures. A quick cable car ride to the summit offers plenty of stunning photo ops 📸. 🌌 Hunting for the Northern Lights After a day on the slopes, you can head out at night to hunt for the Aurora Borealis. If the skies are clear and conditions are right, you might just see vibrant green ribbons dancing across the sky above the snowy landscape ✨. 🐕 Try a Husky Safari Beyond skiing, you can experience a sled ride pulled by a team of huskies through the snowy woods. Levi is perfect for those seeking a unique ski trip that combines world-class skiing with snow forests, husky rides, reindeer, and the magic of the Northern Lights 🇫🇮❄️🌌

If you ask me where in Northern Europe feels most like the "end of the world" in winter, I'd probably vote for Lapland, Finland. Here, you'll find forests blanketed in white snow, endless snowy plains, dog sledding, skiing, the Northern Lights, and those "blue hour" moments when the sky starts to darken around 3:00 or 4:00 PM. This isn't a place packed with tourist attractions where you're rushing to check off boxes every day; it's better suited for slowing down and truly experiencing winter in the Arctic Circle. ❄️Day 1 | Arrive in Rovaniemi, officially enter the Arctic Circle For the first day, I recommend flying directly to Rovaniemi and not planning too many activities after arrival. Once you've dropped off your luggage, take a simple stroll around the city, see the snow-covered town, and get some rest early in the evening. If the weather is good, you can walk along the river or the outskirts of the city; you might even catch the Northern Lights on your first night. The only major task for day 1 is to get used to the cold in Lapland. · -- 🎅 Day 2 | Santa Claus Village, cross the Arctic Circle Dedicate the second day to Rovaniemi's most classic spot—Santa Claus Village. It has a Christmas atmosphere all year round, but it only truly feels like a fairy tale once it snows in winter. You can take photos at the Arctic Circle line, meet Santa Claus, visit the Christmas post office, and send a postcard from the Arctic Circle to your future self or friends. If you happen to be there in December, the atmosphere is even better at night when the lights come on. No need to rush today; just take your time. · -- 🐕 Day 3 | Dog sledding + snowy plains On the third day, start with activities that are truly unique to Lapland. I highly recommend trying a husky sled ride first. Sitting on a sled and traveling through a vast white forest with almost no buildings in sight—just snow and trees—is a feeling completely different from typical tourist spots. In the afternoon, you can find a snowy plain or forest for a walk. If the weather is clear, the winter afternoon sky often displays a mix of blue, pink, and orange, which is perfect for photos. · -- 🌲 Day 4 | Snowy forest + reindeer experience Switch to a slightly quieter pace on the fourth day. You can join a reindeer farm experience, take a reindeer sled ride, and then go for a walk in the forest. A real Lapland forest isn't as "lively" as it looks in photos; often, it's so quiet that you can only hear the sound of your feet crunching in the snow. If you prefer nature, this might actually be the most comfortable day of your entire trip. If the weather is good at night, continue chasing the Northern Lights. Never plan for just one night to see the Northern Lights in Lapland, as it's always a matter of luck. · -- ⛷️ Day 5 | Head to Levi, experience Finnish snow-capped mountains On the fifth day, you can travel from Rovaniemi to Levi. This is one of Finland's most iconic ski resorts. Don't worry if you can't ski; you can try beginner slopes, snow activities, or simply take the cable car up the mountain to watch the winter sunset. The kind of scene you saw on the cover: Blue snow-capped mountains + orange horizon + cable car This is basically the kind of image I highly recommend including in your Lapland itinerary. If you catch a clear day, it's truly beautiful. · -- 🌌 Day 6 | Play in the snow by day, chase the Northern Lights by night Don't cram too many attractions into the sixth day. During the day, you can continue skiing, try snowmobiling, or simply find a forest trail for a walk. The real highlight is at night. Try to choose a spot far away from town lights to chase the Northern Lights. If you're lucky enough, you'll see green light slowly appear above the forest and then start to move. Photos are already beautiful, but the biggest difference in person is: You'll realize the entire sky is moving. This experience is truly irreplaceable by a typical city trip. · -- 🌨️ Day 7 | One last look at the snow, then head home Don't plan any major activities for the last day. Have breakfast, take a walk in the snow, buy some Finnish chocolate or local souvenirs, and then get ready for your return trip. A strange characteristic of a place like Lapland is: When you first arrive, you might think— "It's just snow, right?" But after staying for a few days and leaving, you'll find yourself missing that quietness, the blue sky, and the endless expanse of white. · -- 📍For your first trip to Lapland, I recommend this itinerary 4 days in Rovaniemi + 3 days in Levi. This way, you can experience: Santa Claus Village, husky sledding, reindeer, snowy forests, skiing, and the Northern Lights, without rushing every day. If it's your first time, there's really no need to cram four or five cities into one trip. · -- 🧤Things you must know before going in winter Winter in Lapland isn't just "cold"; sometimes it's truly sub-zero temperatures of ten degrees or lower, so shoes, gloves, and hats are much more important than how good you look. Also, no one can guarantee you'll see the Northern Lights. So, it's best to arrange at least 3 nights with the opportunity to chase the Northern Lights; don't pin all your hopes on just one day. December to March is a great time to experience the snow season. December has the strongest Christmas atmosphere, January and February usually have more stable snow, and the days get significantly longer in March. · -- ✨One last thing If you prefer bustling cities, Lapland might not feel like it has "a lot to do." But if you want to see real snowy plains, forests, the Northern Lights, and winter in the Arctic Circle— Lapland, Finland, is truly worth a spot on your travel bucket list. 📍Lapland, Finland ❄️Northern Lights | Snowy plains | Skiing | Dog sledding | Reindeer | Santa Claus Village

There is something truly magical about Finnish Lapland in autumn. As summer slowly fades, the vast northern wilderness transforms into a spectacular palette of gold, amber, crimson, and deep green. This seasonal display, known as Ruska, is one of the most beautiful times to experience the Arctic landscape. Across the forests, birch trees glow in brilliant yellow while mountain slopes and quiet trails become covered in autumn colors. The crisp northern air, soft September light, and peaceful wilderness create an atmosphere that feels wonderfully remote and untouched. 🍁🌲 Places such as Rovaniemi, Saariselkä, Inari, Levi, Ylläs, and Pyhä-Luosto offer unforgettable opportunities to explore Lapland during this colorful season. Hiking through the fells, walking beside tranquil lakes, and watching the changing reflections on the water make even an ordinary autumn morning feel extraordinary. The evenings bring another kind of magic. Under clear Arctic skies, the first Northern Lights of the season may begin dancing above the forests, adding an unforgettable touch to the already spectacular scenery. 🌌 Autumn in Lapland is not about rushing from one attraction to another. It is about slowing down, breathing in the fresh wilderness air, listening to the silence of the forest, and watching nature prepare for the long Arctic winter. Finnish Lapland in autumn is wild, peaceful, colorful, and unforgettable—a place where every trail seems to lead into a painting. 🍂🏔️🇫🇮 📍 Lapland, Finland 🍁 Best known for: Ruska autumn colors, Arctic wilderness, hiking, fells, lakes & Northern Lights 📅 Autumn/Ruska season: typically September to early October

Scroll through WeChat Moments and 9 out of 10 people are in Iceland, one in Antarctica. Finland? No one's there. Only after going did I realize it's not that people don't want to go, it's that they don't know how to post about it after returning… The photos are so beautiful they look fake, the experiences so wild they sound like jokes. This article is unbiased, pure practical advice, a splash of warm water for sisters who are eager to go. Trip highlights (focus points): ❶ Santa Claus Village, Rovaniemi The officially certified Arctic Circle boundary. Jump over to get a certificate. Suggest going in the afternoon when there are fewer people, and the sunset dyes the snow pink-orange. Chat with the real Santa Claus; he'll say "nǐ hǎo" in Chinese. ❷ Glass igloos, Saariselkä Don't stay at the popular influencer one; it's expensive and old. Choose a lesser-known one with a steeper roof angle, less ice, and lie down to watch the aurora dance. Remember to book a room type with a sauna. After steaming, jump into a snow hole for an out-of-body experience. ❸ Icebreaker cruise, Kemi The only place where you can float on the sea in a survival suit. Black icy water beneath your feet, a clear sky above; photos can't capture that shock. Unlimited hot blueberry juice on board, super delicious. ❹ Rock Church, Helsinki Carved into natural rock, with natural light filtering through the dome. Go at noon; the light beams hit the copper pipe organ, like God tuning. The cocoa rolls at the nearby cafe make you want to pack 10 after eating one. ❺ Levi Ski Resort If you're not a pro, don't go on the black runs. The beginner slopes are long enough. From the cable car, you see entire pine forests covered in snow, like stepping into an ink wash painting. Night skiing is open until 9 PM. Skiing down the mountain under a starry sky is unforgettable. Itinerary planning (7 days, 6 nights reference): Day 1: Helsinki city center, explore the design district + take a ferry to see the sea fortress (don't disembark). Day 2: Morning flight to Ivalo, check into a glass igloo in the afternoon, wait for the aurora at night. Day 3: Half-day skiing in Levi, feed moss to reindeer at a reindeer farm in the evening, take a sleigh ride. Day 4: Kemi icebreaker day trip, visit the Snow Castle on the way back (available before March). Day 5: Full day in Rovaniemi, Santa Claus Village + Arktikum museum, watch an aurora short film. Day 6: Traditional smoke sauna by the lake, ice hole swimming (don't try if you have heart problems). Day 7: Buy some Moomin mugs, fly back to Helsinki, allow 1.5 hours for airport tax refund. Food recommendations (no misses): · Creamy salmon soup: Cream base + large chunks of fish, served with rye bread, warms you to your toes. · Cinnamon rolls: Softer than Swedish ones, with a gooey frosting. The street stalls at the station have the best. · Blueberry pie: Wild blueberries, refreshingly tart, served with a big dollop of cream. · Note: The cold tap water in restaurants is super sweet and drinkable. Don't drink the hot water. Travel tips (survival edition): · Don't chase the aurora with apps; check local cloud maps. Go out only if cloud cover is <30%. · Wear wool base layers under your down jacket; cotton will freeze if you sweat. · Put a hand warmer on your phone, or it will shut down instantly when taking photos. · Don't trust navigation times for driving; actual travel time in snow is 1.5 times longer. · Supermarket snacks are half the price of the airport, especially chocolate. · The indoor-outdoor temperature difference can be 70 degrees. If your glasses fog up, don't wipe them; rinse with warm water. · English is perfectly sufficient; Helsinki has many Chinese services. · Don't bring too much cash; even Santa Claus Village accepts cards. · Toilets are paid; have a 1 euro coin ready. · Finally, don't expect your WeChat Moments to explode. The memories here are the bone-chilling quiet and the heart-warming light. If you post photos without filters, people might not believe you. But you know yourself—this trip was worth it. ❄️

#kindnessontheroad Chasing the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland is a game of patience, often spent standing still in -25°C temperatures. I was in Levi, near the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, waiting by a frozen lake. My camera was set up, but the cold was seeping through my layers. An hour passed, then two. Just as my teeth started chattering uncontrollably, a fellow photographer beside me noticed. Without asking, he unzipped his oversized wool blanket and offered me half. We stood there in silence for forty minutes, sharing the warmth, our eyes fixed on the sky. When the green waves finally erupted, we exchanged quiet nods of gratitude—not just for the lights, but for the shared humanity. For those visiting Lapland in winter: rent a proper Arctic suit if your hotel offers one; regular winter coats won't suffice for long waits. Hand warmers are essential, but a human connection is warmer. Also, consider visiting the less commercialized areas like Muonio for clearer skies. This experience taught me that in the world's coldest places, people are often the warmest. What’s the kindest thing a stranger has done for you in extreme weather?

📍 Place: Levi, Finnish Lapland, Finland ✨ What it felt like: I enjoyed how easy it was to balance adventure with relaxation. One moment I was exploring snowy trails and watching the Northern Lights, and the next I was warming up with a hot drink in a cozy café. The atmosphere felt lively but never overwhelming. 👀 What stood out: Levi offers something for every type of traveler, from skiing and snowboarding to husky safaris, reindeer experiences, and snowmobile adventures. The village is compact, making it easy to walk between restaurants, shops, and activity providers. Even if you skip expensive tours, the surrounding forests and Arctic scenery are beautiful enough to enjoy on their own. 💡 Exclusive tip: Book popular winter activities before your trip if you're visiting between December and March. If you're hoping to see the Northern Lights, choose a clear evening and head just outside the village where there's less light pollution. ❤️ Personal feeling: Levi felt like a destination where every winter day brought something new. Whether traveling with family, friends, or as a couple, it's the kind of place where simple moments in the snow become lasting memories. #Levi #FinnishLapland #Finland #NorthernLights #WinterTravel #Lapland #ArcticAdventure #VisitFinland #SnowyEscape #TripMoments #travel2026#travel#couplestrip#thingstodo#familytravel#citydaytours

❄️ Levi is a renowned resort town in Lapland, Finland, famous for its snow, the Northern Lights, and incredibly romantic glass igloos. In winter, the entire area is covered in pristine white snow. The pine forests turn completely white, resembling a fairytale world, and the night sky offers frequent chances to witness the Northern Lights. A major highlight is staying in a Glass Igloo, where you can watch the Northern Lights directly from your bed. It is truly one of the most romantic experiences in the world. Levi is perfect for those who want to experience an authentic Arctic winter, offering activities like reindeer sledding, snowmobiling, and husky safaris. 🇫🇮❄️🌌✨

Visiting Levi in Finnish Lapland felt like stepping straight into a Christmas card! Located well above the Arctic Circle, this place is a dream for anyone who loves snow and adventure. The landscape of frozen trees, known as "tykkylumi," creates a surreal and beautiful scenery that you won't find anywhere else. 🌲⚪️ My absolute favorite highlights were the husky sledding safari through the silent forests and, of course, the magical Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). Seeing the green lights dance across the dark sky is an experience I will never forget. After a cold day outside, there’s nothing better than a traditional Finnish sauna to warm up! Traveler Tips: Aurora Hunting: Use an Aurora alert app to know exactly when the lights are visible. 🌌 Must Do: Visit the Lainio SnowVillage to see incredible ice sculptures and even have a drink at the ice bar. 🧊 Clothing: Dress in many layers! Temperatures can drop below -20°C, so thermal wear and good boots are essential. 🧣 #Levi #Lapland #VisitFinland #NorthernLights #ArcticCircle #WinterAdventure #TripMoments #HuskySafari #TravelFinland
