There are no streets full of trendy milk tea shops or cheap trinkets. Prices are on par with local towns, and you can spend 2 or 3 days there for just a few hundred yuan. It's peaceful and comfortable. ✨ Jiangxi Shangrao Hekou Ancient Town This is truly the "First Town of the Wanli Tea Road." Traces of its former prosperity are hidden in the polished bluestone paths. Now, the streets are filled with locals, and you rarely hear hawkers calling out. You can clearly hear the wind blowing over the Xin River. Highlights The Ming and Qing dynasty docks along the Xin River. At sunset, the light spreads across the river, and with the wooden stilt houses on the side, it's atmospheric for photos. The Ming and Qing ancient street stretches for several kilometers. Old shops still retain their original plaques. Occasionally, you'll come across umbrella repair shops or barbershops that have been open for decades, full of local life. Ehu Academy, a 10-minute drive from the ancient town, is where Zhu Xi once lectured. It's shaded by ancient cypress trees and so quiet you can hear the sound of turning pages. The cobblestone roads are very slippery on rainy days, so don't just focus on taking photos while walking. ✨ Shanxi Lüliang Qikou Ancient Town A living old water and land port by the Yellow River. It hasn't been renovated into brand-new faux-ancient buildings. Along the street are authentic cave dwellings. Local grandpas sit by the Yellow River smoking and chatting. Staying in a cave dwelling for a night costs only a few dozen yuan. The foot traffic during the National Day holiday is less than a fraction of Pingyao's. Highlights Qikou Ancient Street, which stretches along the Yellow River, has stone paths polished smooth by the carriages and horses of the past. Old-brand shops still remain on the sides. You can see the Yellow River rushing by just by looking down. Li Jia Shan Village, a 20-minute drive from the ancient town, has layers of cave dwellings embedded in the loess slopes. Wu Guanzhong once praised it as a miracle like a Han tomb. It's spectacular to look at from the slope. The Black Dragon Temple at the highest point of the ancient town offers a view of the entire Yellow River bend from the temple gate. There are no tourist traps here. During the National Day holiday, there are fewer tourists than locals just hanging out. Highlights The boat-shaped old street is the soul of the entire ancient town. The cool verandas are filled with tea stalls. Ear cleaning services and sugar-coated hawthorn sellers all cater to regular customers. The local atmosphere is undeniable. The ancient opera stage in the middle of the street offers free Sichuan opera performances during festivals. You can listen while sitting at a tea stall. Luocheng Confucian Temple, a few hundred meters from the main street, has red walls and black tiles and is very quiet. There are few tourists, making it great for photos. Itinerary 1 day is enough, perfect for adding to a Leshan food tour. Arrive in the morning, find a tea stall, squeeze in among the locals, watch cards, and relax. Have some snacks for lunch, visit the Confucian Temple and stroll the old street in the afternoon, and head back to the city in the evening for some Qiao Jiao beef. Tips The entire ancient town is completely free, with no paid attractions. Don't look for a fancy shop for tea; just sit wherever there are many locals. The taste and price are both honest. Tea stall seats are tight during holidays, but since they are all locals relaxing, you will never encounter the situation of not being able to move in popular ancient towns. None of these places have tourist traps. You can have a very comfortable trip with just a thousand yuan or so.
