Spain Mogarraz Plaza Mayor to Sierra de Francia Chestnut Drying Hut Lane — €0 Portraits, €0 Huts, Is
#worthitomot #Mogarraz #SierraDeFrancia #Salamanca
I drove from Salamanca to Mogarraz (1h20, twisty SC-110), parked at the upper lot (€0, 200 m above the village — cars are banned in the core), and walked down the stone lane at 9 am. Plaza Mayor is an oval of granite slabs with the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves at the top; free, no entry fee to the square. What makes Mogarraz unique: 388 painted portraits of villagers (1967 ID-card photos turned into façade murals by Florencio Maíllo) stare down every lane — a free open-air gallery. From the plaza I took the "Camino del Agua" signed path west, 6 km round trip to Monforte viewpoint, passing stone chestnut-drying huts (cabañas de secar castañas) — small stone boxes with slatted floors, now mostly roofless, free to peek inside. Mid-October the lane smells of roasting chestnuts from the one open horno (€3/kg, cash). Mistake: I came in February once expecting snow charm; the lane was ice and the upper Monforte path unmarked under frost — spring (April) or chestnut harvest (Nov) only. Another mistake: driving the SC-110 after rain; the last 8 km from La Alberca has no shoulder and a tour van coming the other way means one of you reverses 400 m. Worth it? Yes — Mogarraz is the most human-scaled of the Sierra de Francia white villages, and the portrait project turns a sleepy hamlet into a memory archive for €0. The chestnut huts are ruins, not museums, so manage expectations. Question: is a free village where the dead watch you from the walls more moving than a ticketed open-air museum, or does the lack of interpretation leave you cold?
