Hey guys, I just got back from a trip to the hidden gem of Killarney in Ireland. It was such a wonderful trip that I just had to share it with you all! 🌳Attractions: Killarney National Park is a must-visit! The scenery here is so beautiful that it leaves you speechless, with rolling green hills, clear lakes, and deer everywhere. It's truly healing. I took a walk along the lakeside trail, and every step felt like walking into a painting. Ross Castle is also very unique. This ancient castle stands by the lake, as if telling stories of the past. Climb to the top of the castle for a breathtaking view of Killarney. 🍽Food: In Killarney, you can't miss the beef stew with Guinness. The tender beef is simmered in a rich Guinness broth until it's soft and flavorful, melting in your mouth. Pair it with mashed potatoes for a carb-filled delight! There's also traditional Irish soda bread, with a crispy crust and soft interior, a hint of malt aroma, and butter spread on top. It's simply irresistible. 🏨Accommodation: I stayed at the Killarney Plaza Hotel, which is in a great location right in the city center. It's super convenient for shopping and finding food. The hotel rooms are spacious and bright, with local-style decor and attentive service. Plus, the hotel has a beautiful garden. Having breakfast in the garden in the morning, enjoying the fresh air, and starting a day full of energy is just so pleasant. 🚗Transportation: In Killarney, you can rent a bike to get around. It's a great way to freely explore the attractions and experience the charm of this small town up close. Of course, taking the local bus is also convenient, and you can enjoy the scenery along the way. Killarney is truly a charming place, with both natural beauty and a captivating cultural atmosphere. From the square I followed the lane down to the Nore River bridge, a 1760s five-arch stone span draped in ivy, then crossed and took the path left into Woodstock Gardens (free, OPW-run, no entry charge, open dawn–dusk). The gardens are partially restored: the arboretum has 100+ tree species, the terraced walks look back at the village roofline, and the “Poet’s Walk” along the riverbank is mowed but unstaffed. I packed a chicken fillet roll from the village shop (€5, cash) and ate on a bench where the Nore runs slow and brown. Mistake: I came in November once and the woodland was magnificent but the village café was shut—Inistioge’s two tearooms close midweek off-season, so pack food Oct–April. Another mistake: driving and parking in the square; it holds 6 cars, and the council warden circles at noon. Bus or bike from Kilkenny is calmer. Worth it? Yes—Woodstock is the kind of free, slightly-overgrown Georgian estate that makes Killarney’s paid gardens feel like theme parks. In honor of St. Paddy’s day and many people planning trips to Ireland this summer here is how I would recommend someone spend a week in Ireland. This Ireland itinerary hits some of the big tourist attractions in Ireland and really packs a lot into 7 days. If you have a car you can do this pretty easily. You can also do this with buses (which I’ve done) it just takes a bit more planning but at least you don’t have to drive! If it’s not your first trip to Ireland and you’ve done some of these things, find something else or go somewhere new! That being said I’ve been to the Cliffs twice, done the Book of Kells twice, and been to two of the three Aran Isalnds. Even re-doing experiences can provide a fresh perspective! This classic route connects lakes, mountains, and bays. Killarney National Park is lush with greenery and clear lakes, where cows and sheep roam freely. You can stop anytime along the drive to admire the wild landscapes and coastal views. To avoid crowds, take the Skellig Ring detour, which offers fewer visitors, beautiful scenery, and views of the islands featured in Star Wars. In the north, the Giant’s Causeway stretches along the coast with tens of thousands of hexagonal basalt columns, a natural geological wonder that’s impressive wherever you look. Accommodation greatly affects your travel experience. One place that left a deep impression on me was Glenlo Abbey Hotel in Galway. Located lakeside on the city outskirts, it was once an ancient abbey. It doesn’t have overly commercial luxury decor but retains the vintage texture of the old building. The windows face the lake and distant hills. After a full day on the coast, returning to the hotel with its cozy fireplace and simply elegant rooms is a comfort. The hotel restaurant uses mostly local ingredients. Sitting by the window at dusk, watching the sunset over the lake, helps ease the fatigue of driving. The hotel is not far from Galway’s old town, just a 10-minute drive to the Latin Quarter with its colorful wooden houses. It balances natural beauty and convenient access, perfect for travelers wanting to escape city noise and enjoy tranquility. Book early for peak season. Travel tips: Ireland’s weather is unpredictable. A rain jacket is much more practical than an umbrella, as strong sea winds can easily break umbrellas. Bring layered clothing and non-slip hiking shoes. Public transport runs infrequently, so for groups, renting a car is the best choice. Remember to buy full insurance for the vehicle, as west coast roads are narrow and winding. In cities, you can get a transport card for cheaper bus and tram rides. The path runs along the lakeshore, crosses a few stiles, and meets the old coach road to Lord Brandon’s Cottage. That cottage is not a ruin—it has a café (card only, cash handy for scones) and a boat connection to Ross Castle in summer (≈€25, card). I walked the stage in 4h30 with photo stops; the surface is farm track and grass, muddy after rain, so trail shoes beat trainers. Rain came in sheets at noon and I was glad for gaiters. No permit needed, but the land is private farmland—keep gates shut, dogs leashed, no wild camping without owner permission. A common error is doing it backward from Brandon’s Cottage uphill and missing the light on MacGillycuddy’s Reeks across the water. Carry midge spray in July. The valley shop in Black Valley sells basic supplies but closes Sundays. Question for Kerry walkers: is the boat-from-Brandon’s option worth skipping the road walk back, or does it cut the best part of the glen out of your day?
