We came across St Nicholas Church in Sturry and it was one of those places that made us stop and think about how much history can be hidden in a small village. The church sits close to the River Stour and has a lovely peaceful setting. There has been a church here since at least the 7th century, with records going back to around 690 AD. The present stone building is mainly Norman, with parts dating from the early 12th century. The church was also connected with St Augustine’s Abbey in Canterbury, which gives it an important link to the early Christian history of Kent. As we walked around, we could see that the building has been changed and extended over many centuries. The aisles were added during the medieval period, and the tower has different stages of construction showing how the church developed over time. It is now a Grade I listed building, which shows just how important its architectural and historical features are. Some of the most elaborate medieval windows are in the north aisle and date from the period when that part of the church was enlarged. The glass and windows give you a glimpse into how churches were decorated and how important religious imagery was to people centuries ago. There are even Roman bricks reused in parts of the tower, which is a lovely reminder that materials from much earlier periods were sometimes reused when medieval buildings were being constructed. Inside, there is also a 12th- or early 13th-century font, which would have been used for baptisms for hundreds of years. There is something quite humbling about seeing an object like that still being part of the church today. Another interesting feature is the old brass memorial to Thomas Childmel, who died in 1496. His will included a donation of lead towards covering the church roof, giving us a small personal connection to someone who was involved in the church more than 500 years ago. You can take your time, look at the old walls, the windows and the little details without the crowds. For us, visiting places like this makes exploring Kent much more interesting. You start to realise that you don't always have to visit the famous landmarks to find history. Sometimes a small village church can tell you a story that goes back more than 1,000 years. We visited Margate in October, and honestly, we really liked seeing it outside the busy summer season. The beach was much quieter, which made such a difference. We could walk along Margate Main Sands, take photos, enjoy the sea and actually stop and look around without the crowds you normally get in the summer. Margate has a lovely wide sandy beach, with the harbour and seafront right nearby. It’s also got that proper old-fashioned British seaside feel, with the arcades, fish and chips, cafés and little shops. For us, October was a great time to visit because it felt much more relaxed. The weather can obviously be unpredictable, but we actually enjoyed the cooler air and the quieter streets. We took quite a few photos while we were there, and the softer autumn light made the seafront look really nice. There’s also plenty to do when you’ve had enough of the beach. We had a look around the Old Town, where you’ll find independent shops, cafés, galleries and some lovely little streets to wander through. If you like art, Turner Contemporary is right by the seafront and has beautiful views across Margate Sands. It’s also free to enter the exhibitions, which makes it an easy place to add to your day. And if you’re visiting with children, Margate still has plenty to keep them entertained, including Dreamland, with its vintage rides and family attractions. What we liked most was simply having the space to enjoy the place at our own pace. In summer, Margate can be extremely busy, especially on warm weekends and school holidays. In October, it felt more peaceful, and we could enjoy the beach without feeling like we were surrounded by people. For us, that’s one of the best reasons to visit Margate outside the peak season. You get the sea, the beach, the old town and all the character of Margate, but without quite so much of the summer rush. And if you’re lucky with the weather, you can get some beautiful skies over the water too. Our tip: if you don’t mind cooler weather, give Margate a try in October. We visited St Augustine’s Abbey in Canterbury and found it really fascinating. It’s one of those places that can look like a set of old ruins at first, but once you learn what happened here, you realise just how important this place was to the history of England. The story goes back to 597 AD, when St Augustine arrived from Rome with his mission to bring Christianity to the Anglo-Saxons. He converted King Ethelbert of Kent, who then gave Augustine land outside the city walls to establish a monastery. The abbey became one of the most important religious sites in England and was later rebuilt on a much grander scale by the Normans. What I found especially interesting was the connection with Queen Bertha. Before Augustine arrived, Bertha, a Christian Frankish princess who had married King Ethelbert, was already worshipping at St Martin’s Church in Canterbury. So the story of Christianity in Canterbury is really connected across these three places St Martin’s Church, St Augustine’s Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral. The abbey wasn't only a religious centre either. It became an important place for learning, books and scholarship. Its scriptorium was one of the great centres of book production, helping Canterbury become an important centre of learning in medieval England. And there’s something really special about being able to see the ruins and then use the virtual reality experience. We tried the VR and it gives you a completely different idea of what the abbey would have looked like in the early 1500s. You can virtually walk through parts of the huge monastery and see how impressive it would have been before it was destroyed during the Tudor period. For us, the VR was one of the best parts because when you’re standing among the ruins, it can sometimes be difficult to picture what was actually there. The virtual experience brings the buildings back to life and makes the history much easier to understand. The abbey is also part of the Canterbury World Heritage Site, alongside Canterbury Cathedral and St Martin’s Church, because these places together tell such an important story about the development of Christianity in England. We would definitely recommend visiting, especially if you’re interested in history, religion, old buildings or just seeing a different side of Canterbury. Ramsgate Harbour We really enjoyed spending time around Ramsgate Harbour. It’s the kind of place where you can have a simple walk by the sea, watch the boats coming in and out, grab something to eat and enjoy the views but once you know the history, you start looking at the harbour in a completely different way. The harbour started being built in 1749, after a violent storm showed just how badly ships needed somewhere safe to shelter. Over the years it was developed by some of the best engineers of the time, including John Smeaton and the Rennies. The harbour we see today is the result of all those different stages of building and improvement. One thing we found really interesting is how Ramsgate changed because of the harbour. It helped the town grow from a small fishing community into an important port and later a popular seaside resort. By the 19th century, people were coming to Ramsgate for holidays, helped even more by the arrival of the railway in 1846. And there’s a lovely royal connection too. King George IV visited Ramsgate and sailed from the harbour in 1821. After his visit, the harbour was given the title “Royal Harbour” making it the only harbour in the UK to have that designation. We also found the wartime history quite moving. During the First World War, Ramsgate Harbour was used by the Dover Patrol, and during the Second World War it played an important part in the Dunkirk evacuation. Small boats based around Ramsgate helped bring soldiers back from France, with around 42,000 men arriving at Ramsgate during the evacuation. Standing there today, with the boats in the marina and people enjoying the waterfront, it’s hard to imagine everything that happened here. The same harbour that is now somewhere for us to relax and enjoy the sea was once a busy working port and an important place during wartime. There are layers of history everywhere you look. We visited the Ramsgate Tunnels and, honestly, it was one of those places that stays with you after you leave. From the outside, you would never guess that underneath the town there is a huge network of tunnels with such an important story. The tunnels were originally part of the railway, with the main railway tunnel dating back to 1863. But during the Second World War, they were turned into deep air-raid shelters for the people of Ramsgate. The tunnels were designed to protect up to 60,000 people, which gives you an idea of just how seriously the town was preparing for war. What really hit us was learning what life was actually like down there. Ramsgate was heavily bombed because of its location and importance during the war. On 24 August 1940, around 500 bombs were dropped on the town in just five minutes. Many homes were destroyed, and some families ended up living underground because they had nowhere else to go. The tunnels became almost like a little town underneath Ramsgate. There were shops, cafés, canteens, a hospital, places to socialise and even entertainment. More than 300 families eventually lived down there for periods of time. Walking through the tunnels ourselves made that history feel much more real. It’s quite different reading about the Blitz in a book compared with actually standing underground where families once waited out the air raids. The tunnels are cool, dark and uneven in places, and you can really imagine how different it must have felt during an air raid, with people waiting and wondering what was happening above them. We also visited the Tunnel Museum, where there are displays about Ramsgate during both World Wars, the construction of the tunnels and everyday life on the Home Front. For us, the most important part of the visit was remembering the ordinary people who lived through those years. They weren't soldiers on a battlefield — they were families, children, shopkeepers and workers trying to carry on with everyday life while bombs were falling above them. That’s why we would definitely recommend seeing the tunnels. It isn't just about looking at an old tunnel. It gives you a much better understanding of what life was like for people in Ramsgate during the war and how the town came together to protect its residents. We had a lovely visit to The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge in the heart of Canterbury. From the outside, the building is already beautiful, but once you go inside, there is so much more to discover. It brings together art, history, books and local heritage all under one roof. We could walk through the galleries, look at paintings and objects, and then have a look around the library. It makes it a really nice place to spend some time, especially if you enjoy learning but don’t want something that feels too formal. The history of the building is interesting too. It opened as the Royal Museum in 1899, after Dr James George Beaney left money to Canterbury to provide a museum and library. The building has since become one of the city’s best-known cultural places. We also found it interesting to see how the Beaney keeps Canterbury’s literary history alive. The library is part of the building, so visitors get that lovely combination of books, art and history. There are exhibitions and collections that change over time, which means there can be something different to see when you come back. One thing we noticed was how welcoming it felt for families. You don’t have to be an expert in art or history to enjoy it. We could take our time, look at things that caught our attention and talk about what we were seeing. The Beaney is also very much part of modern Canterbury. In 2025, a statue of Aphra Behn, who spent part of her childhood in Canterbury and became an important English writer, was unveiled outside the building. You can walk in thinking you’re just going to have a quick look around, and suddenly you’re surrounded by paintings, old objects, books, stories and pieces of Canterbury’s past. It’s definitely worth adding to a day out in Canterbury especially if you want somewhere that combines art, books, history and a bit of local culture. We really enjoyed our visit to Westgate Gardens. At first, it just feels like a peaceful green space beside the River Stour, but once you start looking around and learning about the history, you realise you’re actually walking through a very old part of Canterbury. The gardens follow the line of Canterbury’s old Roman and medieval defences. The Romans had a road and city defences here, and archaeological excavations have even found the remains of the old London Gate, which once stood nearby. Parts of the city wall were later rebuilt in the medieval period when there were fears of invasion during the Hundred Years’ War. One of the things we loved most was seeing Tower House, which includes part of a 14th-century defensive bastion. It’s quite easy to walk past without realising what you’re looking at, but knowing that this was once part of Canterbury’s city defences makes the place feel completely different. The gardens we see today have a more recent story too. In 1936, Stephen and Catherine Williamson gave the house and gardens to the city, with the condition that they should remain a public space for the people of Canterbury. Catherine was later Canterbury’s first woman mayor. For us, that’s what made the visit special. We could enjoy a quiet walk along the river, see the flowers and trees and simply relax, but at the same time we were surrounded by hundreds of years of history. There’s also a lovely old Oriental plane tree, believed to be around 200 years old, which is one of the things worth looking out for while walking around. We loved the contrast here — the sound of the River Stour, the green gardens and the peaceful atmosphere, with medieval and Roman history underneath our feet. It’s a lovely place to slow down after exploring the busier parts of Canterbury. If you’re visiting Canterbury, we’d definitely recommend adding Westgate Gardens to your walk. We really enjoyed our visit to Ramsgate, but finding out about Vincent van Gogh’s time here made the trip even more interesting. It’s easy to forget that before he became one of the world’s most famous artists, he was once a young man trying to find his way in life. Van Gogh came to Ramsgate in April 1876, aged just 22, and worked as an assistant teacher at William Port Stokes’ boys’ school. He stayed at 11 Spencer Square, with the school nearby on Royal Road. There were 24 boys at the school, aged between 10 and 14, and Van Gogh taught them subjects including French and German. What I found lovely was hearing about what he did with the boys outside the classroom. He would take them down to the beach, even when the weather wasn't perfect. They played on Ramsgate Main Sands, and on one occasion Van Gogh actually helped the boys build a sandcastle. In a letter to his brother Theo on 21 April 1876, he wrote: “We go to the beach often; this morning I helped the boys build a sand-castle like those we made in the garden at Zundert.” I love that quote because it makes him feel much more real. You can picture him standing on the beach with a group of schoolboys, building a sandcastle and remembering doing exactly the same thing with his brother Theo when he was younger. He also clearly enjoyed the sea around Ramsgate. Shortly after arriving, he wrote to his family about taking a walk by the sea, saying simply: “it’s beautiful there.” He described the harbour, the ships and the stone jetties where people could walk, and said that further out, where the sea was more open, “that’s beautiful.” When we were walking around Ramsgate, I kept thinking about that. The harbour and the sea are obviously not exactly the same as they were in 1876, but there is still something special about standing by the water and knowing that Van Gogh walked around these same streets and looked out at this same coastline. He even made small drawings of the view from the school, including View of Royal Road, Ramsgate, showing how much the place caught his attention. For us, this made Ramsgate more than just a nice seaside visit. We spent some time in Folkestone and really enjoyed the seaside atmosphere. There’s something about being next to the sea that makes you slow down a bit — watching the waves, feeling the fresh air and just taking your time. We loved walking along the seafront and taking in the views across the Channel. On a clear day, the sea looks amazing and there’s always something to watch, whether it’s boats in the distance, people walking along the coast or the waves coming in. What we liked about Folkestone is that it doesn’t feel like it’s only about the beach. There’s a nice mix of the sea, old buildings, little streets, cafés and places to stop and enjoy the views. You can have a relaxed walk, grab something to eat and then find somewhere by the water to sit for a while. For us, the best thing about the sea was simply the feeling of being outdoors. The sound of the waves and the sea air made the whole visit feel refreshing. Even when we weren’t doing anything in particular, we were happy just sitting and looking out towards the horizon. We also enjoyed the fact that the coastline gives you a completely different view depending on the weather. Sunshine makes the sea bright and inviting, while cloudy days give it a completely different character. Canterbury is one of those places where you can just walk around and feel the history all around you. The city has such a lovely mix of old buildings, narrow streets, historic houses and beautiful architecture, with something interesting around almost every corner. One of the main reasons to visit is the incredible history. Canterbury has been an important city for centuries, and you can see that in the buildings and streets. The famous Canterbury Cathedral is the obvious highlight, but there’s much more to explore, including the old city walls, historic streets, medieval buildings and charming little lanes. I really enjoyed walking around without rushing, taking in the architecture and stopping at different places along the way. There are plenty of independent shops, cafés and places to eat too, so it’s easy to make a full day of it. If you enjoy history, photography, architecture or simply exploring pretty English cities, Canterbury is definitely worth a visit. Had such a lovely visit to Canterbury Cathedral and honestly, it’s one of those places that looks impressive from the outside, but even more amazing once you step inside. The size of it, the beautiful architecture, the stained glass windows and all the little details make you want to stop and look around properly. Walking through the cathedral, you can really feel how much history this place has. There are so many stories connected to it, and it’s incredible to think about how many people have walked through these same spaces over hundreds of years. I really enjoyed taking my time here rather than rushing around. The atmosphere was peaceful, and there were so many beautiful details to notice, from the old stonework to the incredible windows and ceilings. If you’re visiting Canterbury, I’d definitely recommend putting the cathedral on your list. Even if you’re not usually someone who visits historic buildings, I think it’s worth seeing just for the architecture and the experience. Had a lovely time looking around Dover Museum and Bronze Age Boat Gallery It’s not huge, but there’s plenty to see and it gives you a nice feel for the history of Dover and the local area. I especially enjoyed the displays about the town and its past — really interesting without feeling too heavy. Definitely worth popping in if you’re spending the day in Dover, especially if you enjoy history and discovering a bit more about the places you visit. One of the trips we really enjoyed as a family was our day out in Margate. It was lovely to spend some quality time together away from our usual routine and enjoy a simple day by the sea. As soon as we arrived, we headed towards the beach. The sound of the waves, the fresh sea air and the open view made us all feel relaxed. We enjoyed walking along the seafront, taking photographs and just spending time together. The children enjoyed being near the beach, while we enjoyed watching them have fun and making the most of the day. We also spent some time exploring Margate beyond the beach. We walked around the town, looked at the shops and stopped to enjoy some food and refreshments. It was nice not to have a strict plan and just explore at our own pace. The beach was definitely the highlight of our family trip. We enjoyed sitting together, watching the sea and taking in the atmosphere. There was something really nice about having everyone together, away from work, school and the normal busy routine. What made the day special for us was that it didn't need to be an expensive or complicated trip. We simply enjoyed being together, laughing, walking, taking photos and making family memories. Sometimes these simple days out become the memories we remember most. Guided walk across Morecambe bay. We took the train to Arnside in south Cumbria, and joined two charity groups of walkers…about 600 in total. Our guide Michael Williams escorted us southwards along the coast to the point where we were to set of cross the river Kent as it flows out into the tidal waters of Morecambe Bay, being very wary of the sinking mud/quick sand that the area is infamous for. 7 miles later we reached the beautiful town of Grange over Sands, with enough time for up to have a quick pint before jumping on the train back home. Conveniently located for Rye and Kent, this site offers large, open grassy fields with some tree shelter at the top. The showers and toilets were very clean, with two uniquely housed in a converted horse box! Despite only having four showers, we experienced no waiting, and the hot water flowed freely. We appreciated the thoughtful extras like a local walking map, microwave, and hairdryer. Being a small campsite, it was wonderfully peaceful. Many campers enjoyed hired firepits, complete with supplied logs. The site is just off the main route to Rye, so it's easy to locate. We walked into Rye via fields and public footpaths, which, while not flat, was a leisurely one-hour walk. We only briefly met the owners, but they were friendly and helpful.
