On my East African journey, I unknowingly arrived at my third stop - Uganda. The twists and turns along the way are hard to describe in words. I chose to enter Uganda by land from Nakuru, Kenya. There were many unexpected situations along the way, including two flat tires and five car changes. After a full 24 hours, I finally arrived in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Although Kampala is not a popular mainstream tourist city, I still found many attractions worth visiting. ✨One-day itinerary ✅In the morning, visit the must-see Uganda National Mosque in Kampala. This mosque is the largest in East Africa and was funded by Libya. The entrance fee is UGX 25,000, and headscarves are provided at the entrance. The indoor area can only be visited with a guide. I highly recommend climbing to the top of the tower, where you can overlook the entire city of Kampala. The view of the city, full of life and slightly chaotic, is particularly impressive! ✅Then take a taxi directly to the Uganda Museum, which is the most retro museum I have ever visited. As soon as you enter, it feels like you have traveled back to the last century. Here, you can learn about the history of Uganda. The entrance fee is UGX 15,000. There is currently an exhibition on apes, which is worth seeing. Don't forget to visit the traditional Ugandan buildings outside. ✅At noon, have lunch at the popular Cafe Javas, and then take a taxi to Namirembe Cathedral in the wealthy district. When you arrive, it feels like you have entered a completely different world. Perhaps because it is on a hill, the air is particularly fresh. The entrance fee to visit the interior of the church is UGX 10,000. ✅In the evening, you can visit St. Mary's Cathedral Rubaga on Rubaga Hill, which is free to visit. If you have time, you can also visit the Kabaka Palace, which was once the king's palace. The interior of the palace is not open to the public, but the basement can be visited. 🚗Transportation I took a bus from Busia to Kampala. Before reaching the city, the entire bus was dropped off at a checkpoint in the suburbs. I had no choice but to take a taxi to the hotel. The driver said that buses often do this because traffic jams in Kampala are very serious. It took us more than two hours to get from the suburbs to the city hotel, which normally takes half an hour. "Kampala Jam" really lives up to its reputation. Be patient when taking a taxi here, as traffic jams are common. Locals mostly choose boda boda for transportation. 🧩About visas I entered Uganda by land from the Busia border in Kenya. I applied for an East African visa in advance, and the process was smooth.

We had a terrific experience visiting Mabamba Swamp, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Murchison Falls, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, Lake Mburo, and Kampala. Our guide and driver, David Magoomu, who navigated the Toyota LandCruiser safari car, was excellent, and we highly recommend him. The 14-day safari journey, along with one day in Kampala, allowed for occasional mornings or afternoons off, so it could be done in fewer days. We enjoyed game drives with our own guide while other activities, such as boat safaris, walking tours, and mountain biking, were conducted with local guides. Gorilla trekking was undoubtedly the most memorable part of the trip. The lodges provided good accommodation and offered a high level of service, especially Gorilla Leisure Lodge, which excelled in client service with attentive staff like Hassan. The roads in Uganda were in good condition overall, with minimal potholes, except for the sand roads. The booking process was facilitated by Nadia, whose helpful communication convinced us to choose this travel agency over others. Additionally, the SGR guarantee, ensuring protection in case of bankruptcy, played a significant role in our decision. We would wholeheartedly recommend this trip and, especially, our wonderful guide David.

Slept Nyabitaba (2,651 m) night 1. The mossy valley hits day 4: John Matte → Bujuku, 6 hrs through the bog boardwalk (part-plank, part-boot-suck). Bujuku 3,977 m, day 6°C, moss frozen-crust at dawn, 9°C noon. Wore hired rubber boots over wool socks—the bog is ankle-to-knee Sphagnum soup. Mistake: I did the 1-day walk thinking "see the moss" — only reached the montane forest, 1,615→2,000 m, no groundsel, no bog. Bujuku needs 4 days minimum. Second mistake: I didn't hire the RMS rubber boots — my leather boots died in the Kurt Shafer bog, taped bin-bags on day 3. Hire boots at base. Third: I drank from a "clear" stream at Bujuku — guide: "glacier silt + hippo path above, boil 3 min minimum". Filter + boil. Buy in Kasese: a 5,000 UGX rolex at the taxi park, not the 40 USD Kasese hotel. Gear: a 120 USD 0°C bag from Kampala—Bujuku huts are 3°C inside. Local rule: no drone (UWA bans), no cutting giant groundsel (endemic, fine), mandatory RMS guide + porter (max 15 kg), sign in/out at Nyakalengija. The moss in the Bujuku bog is the mountain's kidney—step on the plank, not the green between. Opinion: Rwenzori is 1,100 USD for 5 days of mossy groundsel bog most Ugandans haven't seen. Should UWA cap daily Central Circuit permits at 30 and raise the fee 10% for bog-boardwalk repair, or keep volume low but plank rotting? I'd cap + repair. Would you pay 1,100 USD to walk a frozen moss bog under 5 m groundsel with glacier cloud?

No park entry for the ridge itself (it's outside the PN boundary on community land), but local guide 25–40 USD/day mandatory for Wanale cliff walk, coffee tour 15 USD, Sipi Falls 3-tier hike 20–30 USD guide. Kampala→Mbale 4.5 hrs (25k UGX bus), boda to Sipi 10k UGX. I based at a Sipi lodge (45 USD B&B), did the coffee tour 08:00 (15 USD, Bugisu arabica, pulping demo), then the Wanale ridge forest walk with a 30 USD guide. The moss is the shade-coffee forest: Cordia and Albizia with Thuidium on the coffee-shade trunks 1 cm thick, 15°C in August, a Doherty's bush-shrike, the Sipi Falls 100 m drop roaring below. Above the coffee line the ridge enters mixed forest — moss on the Wanale rock shelter (Imbalu circumcision site) black-green, ate a 10k UGX Mbale rolex, watched the Karamoja plains haze at 11:00. Mistake: I did Wanale ridge in a 14:00 start — fog on the cliff, 30 m drop invisible, guide grabbed my pack; 07:30 start, turn at 12:30. Another: the 25 USD "guide" quoted in Mbale town is often a broker — hire at the Sipi guides' desk, cash 80k UGX direct. Would you pay 15 USD coffee + 30 USD guide for the Sipi→Wanale mossy shade-coffee ridge walk, or skip Wanale and do the 3 Sipi waterfalls hike only?

We had a wonderful stay at Safari Homes. The rooms were spotless, the bed was incredibly comfortable, and the shower was excellent after a long day of exploring. The whole place has a cozy atmosphere, surrounded by lush greenery, with soft background music creating a relaxing vibe. In the evenings, the fireplace was the perfect spot to unwind, and the blankets provided made it even more comfortable. The food was absolutely delicious, and every member of the staff was warm, welcoming, and always happy to help. We also loved that there were plenty of games available, making it a fun place to relax and spend time together. Overall, Safari Homes is a peaceful, well-maintained stay with fantastic hospitality. We would happily stay here again and highly recommend it.

No UWA gate fee (it's community land), but you pay a local guide 50,000–100,000 UGX for the 3-falls hike (13–27 USD), 10–20k UGX community fee, and 30–50k UGX (~8–13 USD) for the Arabica coffee tour — pick the full-hike + coffee combo, not à la carte. I took the 07:00 PostBus to Mbale (15k UGX), boda to Sipi (10k), slept at a 50k UGX guesthouse, and started at 08:20. The coffee trail runs between fall 2 and 3: Sabiny smallholders' plots on the 1,800 m slope, arabica bushes with moss on the shade-tree trunks (Grevillea and Albizia) 2 cm thick, 17°C, a turaco crossing the gorge. The guide picked ripe cherries, showed the pulping shed, roasted a handful on the clay pan, and I drank the result — brighter than any Kampala café, 8,000 UGX cup included in the tour. Then the mossy bit: the path to the lowest fall (85 m) drops through riverine forest where the spray keeps the rocks emerald year-round. Mistake: I came in April — clay path a slip-n-slide, no grip soles; June–August dry. Another: guides quote "100k all-in" then ask for "tip for the community" at fall 3; agree the total in UGX before starting. Would you pay ~25 USD for Sipi's 3-fall hike + arabica roast on the mossy shade-tree trail, or skip the coffee and just do the 13 USD falls walk?

I started from Nyakalengija (22 km from Kasese, bus Kampala→Kasese 6 hrs, 30,000 UGX), paid UWA entry 40 USD/day + mandatory guide/porter through a registered operator (7-day circuit 1,000–1,500 USD all-in). Day 3 from John Matte to Bujuku Hut is the bog section — 4 hrs of boardwalk-then-boot-suck. The moss here is Sphagnum hummocks 1 m tall, giant heather draped in old-man's beard lichen, and the trail is a raised plank that ends abruptly into thigh-deep bog if you step off. I reached Bujuku shore at 14:00, the lake black, the moss on the giant lobelia stems bright green, and a scarlet-tufted sunbird feeding 2 m from my pack. Temperature 3°C, rain on/off. Porters: one per 15 kg, 25 USD/day; I skimped on a porter and my knees paid for it at 3,400 m. Mistake: I wore trail runners day 1 — by John Matte the bog had them squelching; rent waterproof boots in Kasese (20,000 UGX/day) or bring your own. Another: December–February and June–August fill 6 weeks out; book huts early. Would you commit 7 days and 1,200 USD to reach Bujuku's mossy bog at 3,962 m, or do the 3-day lower forest trek and skip the altitude?
