We recently came back from an eight-night trip with Rocky Mountaineer, which included two nights in Vancouver, a two-day train ride through Western Canada, two nights in Jasper National Park, two nights at Lake Louise in Banff National Park, and one night in Calgary. It was a trip we had dreamed of for years, and our 50th anniversary in October felt like the perfect time to make it happen. One thing to note is that you don't sleep on the train; it stops in Kamloops, where we stayed at the DoubleTree Hotel. Rocky Mountaineer offers two package options: SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf. While the GoldLeaf package comes at a premium, it offers enhanced amenities. GoldLeaf includes stays at Fairmont hotels, complete with Fairmont Gold lounges providing breakfast and snacks all day. Since Kamloops doesn’t have a Fairmont hotel, we stayed at the DoubleTree there. Given that it was our golden anniversary, we decided to go for the GoldLeaf package. In the GoldLeaf package, you travel in an upgraded train car with upper-level seating and panoramic windows for incredible views of scenery and wildlife. Meals are served in a lower-level dining car. By contrast, the SilverLeaf package provides meals at your seat in a single-level car without the panoramic windows. The journey came with many memorable excursions, such as breathtaking stops at lakes and waterfalls, the Jasper SkyTram, the Banff Gondola, and an adventure on the Athabasca Glacier aboard an ice explorer, which also included lunch. We also enjoyed the stunning Glacier Skywalk, which extends 98 feet over the Sunwapta Valley, about 900 feet below. Every staff member we encountered was welcoming, polite, attentive, and friendly. The GoldLeaf train car seats were especially comfortable, with ample legroom. All drinks, including mixed drinks, were complimentary onboard, and while we aren't big drinkers, my wife and I each enjoyed a Baileys Irish Cream. They really prioritize making sure you're well fed and hydrated during the trip. From the moment we left Vancouver until we arrived in Calgary, our luggage was taken care of. Gratuities for the train’s culinary crew, hosts, and hostesses were all included in the package. Overall, we were thoroughly delighted with the experience. Rocky Mountaineer runs like a well-oiled machine, ensuring every detail is covered. I wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone looking for a relaxing, scenic, and indulgent journey—you won't regret it. The only factor outside of your control is the weather. Luckily for us, we enjoyed sunny skies every day, with high temperatures in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

The Rocky Mountaineer is undoubtedly a high-quality company that offers a luxurious, cruise-like experience. Their friendly and well-trained staff provides attentive support at all times, whether handing over your hotel key with your luggage already in the room or cheerfully serving drinks onboard. They even maintain hotel kiosks staffed to help with any issues. Our journey began with two wonderful free days in Vancouver. On the third day, we met our group at the beautiful Fairmont Hotel, boarded a bus for a short ride to the train station, and enjoyed complimentary coffee and tea before a lively bagpipe procession escorted us to the train. Day one on the train was a ten-hour ride through Canada’s only desert, ending with an overnight stay in the unremarkable town of Kamloops. Day two, however, featured twelve hours of breathtaking scenery as we crossed the Canadian Rockies, culminating in our arrival at stunning Lake Louise during delightful spring-like weather. Lake Louise, fed by glaciers, is a visual masterpiece for photographers, but unless you're an avid hiker, a two-day stay is sufficient as the area lacks a true town for leisurely exploring. After two nights at the luxurious Fairmont resort, we transitioned from rail to bus for stops at Emerald Lake and The Natural Bridge, then continued to Banff. The historic Banff Fairmont, built in 1914, offered a magnificent setting overlooking the Bow River, a half-mile from town. We thoroughly enjoyed hiking by the river, shopping in Banff’s quaint town, and exploring the area during our two-night stay. Our final day featured a breathtaking ride on the Banff Gondola, ascending to 7,500 feet where fresh snowfall greeted us. After lunch in town, we headed to Calgary for an overnight stay before departure. The itinerary was fantastic, but does the train experience justify the cost? Honestly, the 22-hour rail journey could be completed via limousine or rental car in just eight hours, skipping the relatively unimpressive Kamloops overnight stay. However, the train itself is an experience in luxury. Each car offers first-class leather recliners upstairs and a dining room below serving restaurant-style meals. While food quality was decent, it did not quite reach cruise-ship standards. Snacks, alcoholic beverages, and soft drinks flow freely all day with no extra charge, complemented by a robust selection of wine, craft beer, and cocktails. The cheerful crew caters to every reasonable request, creating a cruise-like camaraderie among guests. For photographers, the open-air observation deck provides a window-free space for stunning shots, and the train’s layout ensures minimal waiting for its two restrooms. However, occasional delays arise as the rail line is shared with freight trains. These interruptions were short during our trip, but significant delays like the seven-hour stoppage caused by a freight derailment the following day are possible. Overall, if you’ve never experienced it, the Rocky Mountaineer is absolutely worth trying for its luxurious offerings and scenic routes. Opt for a limo or car on a return trip if you'd prefer faster travel.

Wow, what an adventure! I commented to a fellow traveler, "It's like turning left on an airplane," to which they replied, "Oh no, my dear, this is way, way better!" From the flags and red carpet at boarding, the ground staff waving us off, to the comfort of the seats and superb food and drink service, everything felt first-class. The hosts’ warm welcome, the captivating commentary, and the breathtaking scenery made it unforgettable. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made these two days so special! The overnight stop at Kamloops was handled brilliantly as well!

Our journey from Calgary through the Rockies included wonderful stops in Banff and Kamloops before heading to Vancouver. Becki, our exceptional tour guide, was incredibly informative, knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. Bernardo, our driver, was just as friendly and an excellent driver, ensuring our safety throughout. Every day was packed with stunning sights and activities. Overall, it was a fantastic week-long tour.

What an incredible experience! We chose to stick with our silverleaf booking despite advice to upgrade to gold, and we couldn't be happier. The carriage was very comfortable, and the service was outstanding. Throughout the journey, we enjoyed excellent food and wine while admiring the beautiful scenery and wildlife through the large viewing windows. Although we arrived late at Kamloops due to track congestion, the staff ensured we were well-fed with a meal, so there was no need to rush out to find food. The hotel we stayed in was functional and comfortable, making for a pleasant stop before another amazing day. The friendly staff went above and beyond to make our trip memorable—special thanks to Kerstan and Taylor for all their hard work. The onboard conveniences were spotless, though they occasionally acted like a bidet! While the viewing platform was limited, it offered some fresh air and an excellent spot for photos. Overall, the trip was so delightful that I would love to do it all over again. Truly a treat!

The Rocky Mountaineer train journey from Jasper to Vancouver is truly delightful. The most memorable part was the two days spent traveling from Jasper to Kamloops and then from Kamloops to Vancouver. The onboard hosts, Asia, Ian, and Kelly, provided impeccable service throughout. The breakfast and lunch were gourmet quality, paired with continuous refreshment service. The views through the expansive windows were breathtaking. Before the train ride, we enjoyed a 7-day tour from Calgary to Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper. The hotels, coach travel, and planned activities were all excellent, and every detail of the trip was perfectly organized. An outstanding holiday experience.

This was a bucket list trip for us, and we saved up to enjoy the gold leaf experience, which we absolutely loved. The difference between silver and gold class seemed noticeable, and apart from one issue (more on that later), everything was wonderful. We were amazed by the seating, the ample legroom, and the ease of walking around the carriage. Having tray tables at our seats while also being able to go downstairs to the dining area and viewing platform was a great touch. The food was absolutely delicious, and the hosts—Kirk, Patrick, Siobhan, and Chris—were excellent. They were attentive, friendly, funny, informative, and genuinely good people. Another notable point is that, despite 59 of us being in the carriage for 12 hours a day, the toilets were spotless and even smelled pleasant—a detail particularly appreciated by the ladies, I imagine. The scenery was incredible, but heads up—if you’re traveling from Banff to Vancouver, being on the left side of the train offers better views. Seat assignments are pre-arranged, so there’s no choice in the matter, unfortunately. If I were to deduct any points, it would be for the end of the journey. After enjoying such luxury on the train, being transferred to a coach and then dealing with a 40-minute wait to check into the hotel was a letdown. Previously, during the stop in Kamloops, we were checked in and handed room keys in advance, which felt much more seamless. At the end of this journey, it felt like the service just abruptly ended—almost as if saying, "You're on your own now." That said, the overall experience was so amazing that it feels unfair to dock a star over that. If you’re booked for this trip, I’m confident you’ll enjoy it as much as we did!

In August, we embarked on the Rocky Mountaineer Silver Package from Vancouver to Calgary, with stops in Kamloops, Lake Louise, and Banff. The first two legs of the trip took us aboard the train from Vancouver to Kamloops and then Kamloops to Lake Louise. From there, we boarded a comfortable coach to Banff, where we enjoyed a 4-hour stop before heading to Calgary. · *Accommodations:** The hotels were excellent in every way. From the Georgian Court Hotel in Vancouver to the Coastal Hotel in Kamloops, the Post Hotel & Spa in Lake Louise, and the Fairmont Palliser in Calgary, every location offered outstanding service. Rooms were well-appointed, very clean, and conveniently located. · *Onboard the Rocky Mountaineer:** The journey began with a red carpet ceremony featuring bagpipes at the train station, where staff waved us off as we departed. The crew of Car 13—Ian (a top-notch entertainer), Kirk (a budding comedian), and Lalita (our exceptional culinary chef)—provided a truly memorable experience. Their professionalism, friendliness, and great humor enriched the journey. Ian and Kirk entertained us with historical insights and stories, while Lalita shared detailed explanations of the day’s menu, which offered delicious food. They catered to everyone’s needs and kept drinks flowing smoothly. The seats were spacious and very comfortable, and the entire train, including the bathrooms, was impeccably maintained. As we traveled through the Rockies, the scenery was breathtaking—majestic mountains, endless rivers, pristine lakes, and, if lucky, wildlife. We were fortunate to spot ospreys, bald eagles, deer, big-horn mountain goats, a black bear, and even the famous Kamloops beaver (or so we think). Perfect weather and minimal smoke from forest fires made it even more enjoyable. · *Handling an Onboard Engine Issue:** During our trip, we encountered an engine failure between Revelstoke and Golden, which caused a significant delay. Despite this, the crew went above and beyond, keeping us informed and providing exceptional care. Amanda, the journey director (we hope we got her name right), visited each car personally, explained the situation, and outlined the steps being taken. The crew even served dinner—typically not included in the package—and ensured drinks were available throughout. Late at night, we continued our journey via shuttles, and when we arrived at our hotel near midnight, we were pleasantly surprised with breakfast vouchers waiting for us. The following day, we received an email about additional compensatory measures, showcasing the exceptional customer care and responsiveness of the Armstrong Collective. Their commitment to passengers was exceptional and rare. · *Flawless Logistics:** Everything ran seamlessly—from shuttle transfers between hotels and the train to prompt luggage handling and smooth hotel check-ins. The Armstrong Collective also championed local Canadian products, promoting BC wines and beer from small breweries—a thoughtful touch that supported local enterprises. A huge thank you to the Armstrong Collective for their extraordinary customer service and to Ian, Kirk, and Lalita of Car 13 for making our journey truly special and enjoyable.

The Rocky Mountaineer is advertised as "the trip of a lifetime." Does it meet those expectations? Personally, I found it to be an excellent experience. We traveled with the gold leaf package—the highest tier available. Our journey began in Vancouver at 7:30 am and spanned two days, taking us from Vancouver to Kamloops and then Kamloops to Lake Louise. Since there are no sleeping facilities on the train, we disembarked at Kamloops and Lake Louise to stay at hotels. As noted in the advertisements, the accommodation in Kamloops was fairly basic yet sufficient. Our package continued with travel from Lake Louise to Banff and then Calgary, which was conducted by coach. This segment of the trip did not include catering. The train itself was exceptional, featuring comfortable, airplane-style seats, a stunning arched glass roof for optimal visibility, large windows, and an outside viewing platform. The staff were attentive, providing information about interesting sites along the way. Snacks and drinks were available at any time, and we were served two meals each day—breakfast and lunch. The food was freshly prepared onboard, and although the menu was limited, everything was delicious. The wine selection, while also limited, did not disappoint. My wife has gluten and dairy intolerances, yet they catered splendidly to her needs. Overall, the train itself and its services were outstanding. I was eager to witness the breathtaking scenery, from expansive alluvial plains to glacier-fed rivers, and the awe-inspiring mountain landscapes, with a chance to spot wildlife like bears or moose. Unfortunately, traveling in August—a month prone to wildfires—meant the visibility was compromised. This year had been particularly significant for wildfires, resulting in smoky conditions that affected the views, primarily on the latter half of the first day and most of the second. While the smoke limited our ability to fully appreciate the mountains, we could still admire the rivers and the dense forests. So, was it the trip of a lifetime? In a way, yes. It was a truly memorable journey that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I would consider doing it again. It is undoubtedly a remarkable experience, but I would recommend avoiding travel in August and packing warm clothing since the mountains can get quite chilly.

There’s something truly captivating about how quickly the scenery shifts. Driving along Highway 99 and watching the lush rainforest transition—almost in a heartbeat—into a parched, arid canyon really makes you appreciate the power of geography. My stop for the day was Lillooet, a crossroads steeped in history. Since I’m a sucker for a good story, my first stop was the "Mile 0 Cairn," the marker for the start of the historic Cariboo Gold Rush trail. Thinking about the people who trekked through here in the 19th century, filled with both hope and dread, gives the place a whole new meaning. For anyone who loves digging into the local vibe, the Lillooet Museum is a must-see. It’s where the memories of gold fever meet the rich heritage of the local Indigenous peoples. Further down the road, the Old Suspension Bridge offers a stunning view of the Fraser River. The valley breeze carries a dry heat—in the summer, temperatures easily top 35°C, and you can definitely feel it on your skin. Having spent plenty of time managing daily operations and hosting guests, I’ve got two pro-tips: Lillooet is tiny and resources are sparse, so it’s best to stock up on food and water in Whistler. Also, stay sharp on the road—it’s full of sharp curves and potential rockfalls. Before you pull into town, make sure to stop at the Seton Lake lookout. The view of the winding road hugging those vibrant, emerald-green waters is absolutely breathtaking. It was just a short hour-long stop, but it was enough to soak in the local history before heading further inland toward Kamloops.

#slowtraveling I rode the Rocky Mountaineer (Vancouver–Kamloops, 2-day, CA$1,600 including overnight hotel, card book). Day one passes runs the Fraser Canyon: at Hell’s Gate the train slows, and a mossy basalt ledge sits 20 m from the window, the canyon spray keeping it green year-round. You can’t get off between Vancouver and Kamloops—it’s a sightseeing train, not a hop-on. I brought binoculars, watched bald eagles, and noted the moss line: below it, dry sage; above it, douglas fir and emerald moss carpet. Mistake: I expected wilderness solitude. It’s a luxury carriage with prosecco. Worth Go for the glass-dome view, not the silence. A host poured shared his grandmother’s Sask smoked salmon and said “the moss doesn’t care about the linen tablecloths.” Is a train window a viewpoint, or a frame that owns the moss?

Absolutely loved the Rocky Mountaineer journey from Banff to Vancouver, including the overnight stop in Kamloops. We traveled in Silverleaf, which was truly fantastic. While their social media often highlights the Goldleaf option, Silverleaf offered great value for the money. The food was plentiful, delicious, and provided a variety of options. Once a meal was complete, they served drinks and snacks, which was a wonderful touch. In Silverleaf, you remain seated, enjoying the breathtaking views through the panoramic carriages. Watching the scenery pass by from the train was a memorable experience. It was great to access the vestibules between carriages where the stable doors were open, letting you capture photos of the scenery or even glimpses of the entire train on curves. The hosts in our carriage were exceptional, consistently updating us on wildlife sightings and sharing interesting historical facts about the various parts of the route. It was fun to wave at the Rocky Mountaineer super-fan who comes out to greet the trains as they pass. At times, the journey slowed or stopped to allow freight trains to pass—these trains were impressively long. However, this could delay arrival times in Kamloops and Vancouver, a factor to consider for any onward travel plans. Another thoughtful touch was the transfer of luggage directly to our final destination, which saved us from having to navigate Vancouver late at night while carrying heavy suitcases. Overall, this trip was an unforgettable experience!

Another bucket list adventure ticked off. I loved this entire journey from Banff to Vancouver, which we completed on 3rd Aug. The crew were fabulous—very knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly without being overbearing at all. A big thank you to Sean, Nour, Dillan, and Carston. The menu choice was good, and the food was delicious. We did Gold Leaf, so dining took place downstairs at a shared table. We dined with fellow Brits one time and with two lovely American ladies another time. It was fabulous to mix with other people. Due to smoke in the air, I limited my time outside, though it was great to step out and take in the views when I could. At the start of the journey, there was a minor hiccup where a fault in the computer system led to our seats being double-booked by other passengers. Thankfully, the crew quickly resolved the issue. The first leg of our journey took much longer than expected, as we frequently had to pull into sidings to let long cargo trains pass. This added about two extra hours, causing us to arrive at our hotel in Kamloops around 22:30hrs—too late to see anything of the town, which was disappointing. The dress code onboard is definitely casual. Dress for comfort and warmth—it was quite cool on the first day, and many passengers kept their jackets or jumpers on. The scenery throughout the journey was beautiful, though I personally preferred day two. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience and am so glad to have done it. While it might seem like a lot for a two-day scenic rail journey, the whole experience was completely worth it for me.

We booked the Gold Leaf experience from Vancouver to Banff. Unfortunately, the first day of the train was canceled due to wildfires, and we received the notification at 10 PM the night before departure. Despite this last-minute hiccup, they impressively arranged a fleet of buses, which couldn’t have been an easy task. Though the buses weren’t very comfortable, they had bathrooms, and the staff, especially Vivek, worked tirelessly to make the best out of a challenging situation. Seeing the fires from the bus, we felt grateful to be safe. The bus ride cut the day shorter compared to the train schedule, but we arrived in Kamloops in time for dinner. The Hampton Inn was clean, cozy, and well-organized when handling luggage. Overall, they managed the last-minute changes commendably. The next day, we boarded the train, and it was a delightful experience. The food was exceptional—though there was more than enough to go around—and drinks were offered nonstop. The upstairs sitting area provided lovely views but felt a bit cramped for those seated by the window if they needed to move. Downstairs featured the dining area and an outdoor space. The dining area got rather lively at times, but the food was outstanding. Sadly, moving between cars wasn’t allowed, which, given the constant eating and drinking, made missing the second day of the train less bothersome. Special mentions go to Jenn, who was fantastic, and the other soft-spoken gentleman, who was kind but nearly impossible to hear over the microphone. When someone pointed it out, he whispered that he was “soft spoken,” which was almost amusing. Despite that, he was very pleasant.

We just returned from an amazing trip to Canada. One of the highlights was the Rocky Mountaineer Train. Although intended to be a two-day train journey, the ride was shortened to one day due to wildfires. Rocky Mountaineer did everything possible to make the first day special. Since the fires required us to travel by bus to Kamloops, the staff (including Zack, who stood tall at 6'7", and a friendly young lady) worked hard to keep us happy and comfortable. On the second day, we boarded the train and immediately started enjoying ourselves. From the outset, we ate, drank, laughed, and had a fantastic time. We had purchased the gold leaf package, and it was absolutely worth it. While I can’t comment on the silver leaf experience, our food was phenomenal, the drinks were served consistently, and the service was impeccable. I can’t praise the train journey enough. Actually, we’re now looking into the Canyon Spirit route with Rocky Mountaineer, and we’re expecting another wonderful adventure.

Our dream trip from Banff to Vancouver with an overnight stay in Kamloops on the Rocky Mountaineer Gold Leaf service was absolutely fantastic. From the moment we were collected from our hotel and brought to the station to meet the gleaming train with the red carpet rolled out, everything felt special. The hosts, chefs, and staff were all exceptional. We enjoyed the panoramic roof in the upstairs carriage, relaxing in big, comfy heated reclining leather seats with plenty of legroom and space to move around. The dining car downstairs offered breakfast and lunch in two alternating sittings each day. The food was incredible, and the refreshments menu didn't disappoint. We were constantly treated to snacks and drinks. The hosts were incredible—funny, friendly, and full of interesting stories and helpful information. They showed immense politeness and worked tirelessly to ensure everyone had an enjoyable experience. The scenery from the train was stunning—truly remarkable throughout the journey. The luggage service was seamless; we left our luggage at the train station, and it arrived in our hotel room in Kamloops. The same happened when we traveled onward to Vancouver. At every step, we felt like special guests. This journey was a lifetime dream come true, and it far exceeded all expectations.

We booked this as a way to travel from the Rockies to Vancouver after sightseeing and before our Alaskan cruise. Once on the train, everything was included, and if you're booking, definitely choose GoldLeaf over SilverLeaf. In SilverLeaf, you're mostly confined to your seat, but in GoldLeaf, you get a double-decker carriage with a glass roof. The upper floor allows freedom to move around, while the lower floor offers a dining area, lounge, restrooms, and an outdoor viewing platform. Each carriage has four staff dedicated to educating you about the sights, serving drinks, and indulging you with food. Special commendations go to our fantastic staff—Tyler, Nathan, Colwyn, and Scarlet—as well as the incredible chefs working behind the scenes with fresh ingredients. The food was top-notch, the views were stunning, and we even made new friends along the way. We had an overnight stop in Kamloops, where everything was seamlessly organized. Onboard, you're handed your hotel details, room key, and coach number. The train arrives in Kamloops, you step onto a coach, and you're taken to your hotel where your luggage awaits. The next morning, leave your bags in your hotel room and get back on the coach to reboard the train for Vancouver. A note of caution: phone signal is spotty, and there’s no WiFi onboard. The coaches are climate-controlled, so jeans and a tee worked well for me, though some wore shorts and flip-flops. Be sure to bring a fleece or jacket if you plan to use the outdoor platform. In Vancouver, a similar routine awaits, with your luggage already on your hotel coach. Overall, this was a fantastic trip, worth every penny. If Carlsberg made train journeys, this would be it!

We traveled on the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff in late May. Check-in at the Fairmont Hotel was very efficient, and the pickup from our hotel (Sutton Place) was perfectly on time. The boarding experience, complete with being piped aboard, was fantastic. Our seats in Gold Leaf class were spacious, comfortable, and well-furnished. Both days offered outstanding food, drinks, and service—the Rocky Mountaineer staff worked hard to keep us informed, well-fed, and hydrated. All of this was accompanied by the breathtaking scenery of the Rockies! We arrived at Kamloops for our overnight stop right on schedule and boarded the coach to the hotel. While the overnight hotel (Hampton) had no restaurant, we easily found a meal at another hotel across the street. The meal was good, and this minor inconvenience was outweighed by the Hampton’s large, comfortable room with our luggage already delivered. Early pick-up the following morning was smooth, and we reboarded the train for another delightful day. We arrived in Banff as planned and bid farewell to the excellent staff—Joey, Mauro, Sean, Domenica, and chef Khat—who had taken such good care of us throughout. We bonded with friendly passengers during meals, and all of the food was truly delicious. Every moment of this journey was unforgettable, and we look forward to returning for the Journey through the Clouds!

We cannot recommend this experience more highly. Yes, you spend 12 hours each day on the train, but the 'Journey Through the Clouds' from Jasper to Vancouver, spanning two days with a Kamloops stopover, is truly exceptional. First off, the entire operation is impressively smooth and professional. The online check-in and the Welcome Pack (collected the day before travel) are incredibly informative. The hotel pick-up was perfectly on time, and tagged luggage was conveniently handled—appearing in the Kamloops hotel room, left there for collection the next day, and effortlessly placed on the coach in Vancouver for hotel drop-off. Secondly, the Gold Leaf service is remarkable. It's best described as an 'Emirates Business Class on rails.' The seats on the upper deck are luxurious leather with generous legroom, providing excellent views. Drinks and snacks are served at your seat, and they are plentiful and of high quality. The onboard Hosts offer insightful and informative commentary without being intrusive. Meals are served in the lower deck dining room, freshly prepared by an onboard Chef (one for each carriage), and are of outstanding quality, paired with excellent wines. Most importantly, the views are breathtaking and change dramatically from Day One to Day Two. They are beyond imagination, and we were fortunate to have beautiful weather. A word of advice: don’t be tempted by the savings of traveling in Silver Leaf. While we haven’t tried Silver Leaf, it lacks an upper deck, which likely means spending much of the journey looking at trees rather than over them.
