Hoto in Yamanashi
I always struggle with what to have for lunch in Yamanashi Prefecture.
Finally, I tried hoto!
I went to the Futaba Bypass branch just after 1pm on a public holiday.
I missed about five groups, but the restaurant was spacious and since it was late, many customers were leaving, so I was shown to my seat in about five minutes. Our seats surrounded the hearth.
Since it was my first time, I ordered the first item on the menu, "Pumpkin Hoto" for ¥1,400. Since it was hot, I thought both dishes would be hot, so I ordered "Tempura Ozara (Chilled Hoto)" for ¥1,600 (large portion +¥200).
About 15 minutes after ordering, the pumpkin hoto and tempura ozara arrived in a piping hot iron pot.
I was surprised at how thick and chunky the noodles were, compared to my first time trying hoto. I imagined they'd be similar to kishimen noodles, but the taste was closer to suiton.
As I ordered the pumpkin hoto, it came with about a quarter of a pumpkin. It was a sweet and delicious pumpkin. In addition to the pumpkin, there were many other vegetables, including Chinese cabbage, green onions, burdock, and carrots, all simmered until soft and delicious.
The chilled ozara is almost always kishimen, and I prefer this noodle. It comes with a delicious vegetable and chicken broth, but it doesn't really coat the noodles. I ended up dipping it in the tempura sauce. It was so delicious that I regretted not dipping it in the sauce sooner. The tempura was piping hot and freshly fried, and it was absolutely delicious.
I came here after looking up the menu on Twitter, and someone had mentioned that the pickled vegetables were delicious, so I was looking forward to it, and it really did come with some very delicious pickled vegetables. I didn't feel like I needed any pickles since I didn't have rice, but it was delicious nonetheless. #YamanashiTourism #HotoKosaku #YamanashiLunch @#Let'sTravelWithPochikatsu
