I parked the car at the entrance of Liuhu Park, filled my child's water bottle, and slowly pushed him inside. This trip to Pingliang with my toddler lasted two days, split between the mountain, the park, and food. I'm writing this down for other parents traveling with kids. My child is over three years old. He can walk on flat park paths for a good half-day, but still needs a hand with stairs. For activities, I stuck to the outskirts of Kongtong Mountain. The mountain is rocky with dense forests and undulating terrain. A sightseeing trail has been built around the foot of the mountain, connecting several wooded areas, gentle slopes, and viewing platforms. The trail is mostly flat, so you can use a stroller for parts of it, and there are stone benches and platforms every so often, which are perfect for taking a break. In autumn, the leaves are a mix of yellow and red, making the forest look vibrant rather than cluttered. Standing on the platform and looking out, you can see layers of mountain ridges with the city buildings spread out at the foot of the mountain. I had to hold my child's hand on higher steps, and if he got tired, we just stayed on the platform a bit longer instead of trying to reach the summit. In the denser parts of the forest, the light dims and it gets cooler, so be ready to add or remove layers for your child. We only walked the trail to enjoy the scenery, so I just passed by the temple walls in the mountains without taking my child inside. There are restrooms and supplies at the visitor center at the foot of the mountain, so take your child there before heading in. People visiting on weekends tend to start early, so the trail is quiet and less crowded before 9:00 AM. It's easier to go early than late. Liuhu Park is in the city and is well-maintained. The lake isn't large, the water is calm, and a row of willow trees hangs over the shore. The pavilions, corridors, and stone bridges in the park are in a traditional style, with pleasant-looking eaves and wooden railings. My child spent half a day running through the corridors and watching the little fish in the water from the bridges. There's a small island in the middle of the lake connected by a bridge, and you can see both sides when standing in the middle. The park also has rockeries and several winding corridors that are fun to explore, and my child enjoyed running through them. Most of the lotus leaves by the lake had withered by autumn, so my child just watched the water from the railing. 🌿 This path is flat, easy for a stroller, and has plenty of shade, so you can find a cool spot to sit at noon. Spreading a mat on the lawn for the child to run around on is another good way to take a break. Two food items are worth mentioning. Pingliang mutton soup is the clear broth type, with thin slices of mutton and pieces of broken guokui flatbread soaked in it, making it hot and easy to eat. For my child's portion, I asked the restaurant not to add spice and to add extra broth to soften the bread. 🍜 Jingning roast chicken has shiny skin and tender meat; I picked parts like the leg and wing for my child because they are easy to tear. One chicken is enough for two or three people, and you can take the leftovers with you. The guokui flatbread is thick and layered; it's good eaten dry or soaked in soup, and my child carried a piece as a snack without it being messy. Noodle soups and steamed buns are easy to find in the old town; just order the clear broth version for the child. There are also street stalls selling liangpi (cold noodles) and laozao (fermented rice wine); choose the non-spicy options for the child, and it's safer to sit down to eat rather than eating on the go. Restaurant prices are reasonable; ordering two home-style dishes with a serving of mutton soup doesn't cost much per person. A few things to keep in mind: water and snacks at the stalls on the mountain are expensive, so stock up in the city before heading in. Mutton soup restaurants are busy in the morning and at noon, so arrive half an hour before mealtime to significantly reduce wait times. Don't rush when visiting the mountain with a child; a baby carrier is more convenient than a stroller on sections with many stairs. When your child gets restless, put some snacks on the table to keep them occupied while waiting for food. Check the weather before you leave; if it rains, swap the mountain half-day for the park or indoor venues. As for restrooms, both Liuhu Park and the visitor center at the foot of the mountain have them, so take your child before you start. For accommodation, choose a chain hotel in the city center near Liuhu Park or the old town. Pick a low floor near the elevator so it's easy to get in and out with a stroller, and it's close to places to eat in the evening. Spend one day on the mountain and one day on the park and old town. Keep the nap schedule, and head out in the afternoon after the child wakes up. Ticket prices and park opening/closing times may be adjusted slightly each season, so check the current schedule on the page before buying tickets to decide which day to go. The two-day trip didn't cost much, and my child got to climb the mountain and explore the park, so I think it was well worth it.

Taking parents on a trip is most stressful when you turn a vacation into a forced march. I’ve picked these 8 places, and they all have one thing in common: you can sit down every few steps, and there’s a view wherever you sit. The pace is slow, the paths are easy to walk, restrooms are easy to find, and you won’t be stressed about meal times. 1️⃣ Suqian | Jiangsu Hongze Lake Wetland is big enough to hold a whole day’s worth of my parents’ chatter. ⏰ Get to the park before 9:00 AM. The mist hasn’t cleared from the reed marshes yet, and the boat ride through the waterways is so quiet you can only hear the oars. If you’re traveling with seniors, I recommend taking the sightseeing cart to the core area before switching to a tour boat. This saves you two kilometers of unnecessary walking. 📍 You can rent wheelchairs at the visitor center at the main entrance of the Wetland Park. Ask at the window about the deposit and procedures—don’t worry about the hassle. 🍜 Head back to the city center for lunch to have Siyang bacon and Hongze Lake fish head. Choose a small restaurant in the old town; the portions are large, so don’t order too much. ⚠️ The reeds shed fluff in October, so have a mask ready for your parents. People with rhinitis should be especially careful. 2️⃣ Changji | Xinjiang The wheat fields in Jiangbulake were just harvested in late September, and the golden haystacks are more photogenic than a sea of flowers. ⏰ After 4:00 PM, the light slants down, and the silhouette of the Tianshan Mountains unfolds layer by layer. My mom stood there watching for ten minutes without saying a word. Wucaiwan is best visited in the evening. The sunset burns the Yadan landforms into an orange-red color, but it’s windy, so bring a windbreaker for your parents. 📍 For Tianshan Tianchi, I recommend taking the shuttle bus to the lower cable car station, then transferring to go up to Mayashan Mountain. This saves you the steepest climb. 🚄 A taxi from Urumqi to downtown Changji takes about 40 minutes. For trips to Jiangbulake and Wucaiwan, I recommend chartering a car or joining a small one-day tour, as driving the mountain roads yourself isn’t senior-friendly. ⚠️ The altitude at Tianchi is nearly 2,000 meters. If your parents have high blood pressure, ask a doctor first. 3️⃣ Qinhuangdao | Hebei The sea at Beidaihe isn’t stunning, but it has the advantage of being flat. ⏰ Go to Pigeon Nest Park at 6:30 AM to watch the sunrise. The boardwalk has no stairs, so it’s wheelchair-accessible. 📍 After watching the sunrise, head over to Liuzhuang Seafood Market. Pick your own crabs and find a small shop nearby to cook them; it’s more practical than the restaurants in the scenic area. 🍜 Eat the mantis shrimp and teppanyaki squid while they’re hot; they get fishy when cold. Shanhaiguan Old Dragon Head is worth half a day. The slope of the city wall is gentle; my dad even made it up with his cane. ⚠️ Don’t buy pearl or seashell crafts at the entrance of the scenic area. The prices are inflated; the same items are half the price at supermarkets in the city. 4️⃣ Zhangzhou | Fujian The cobblestone roads in Yunshuiyao Ancient Town aren’t kind to seniors’ knees, so wear soft-soled shoes. ⏰ Arrive before 7:00 AM, before the tour groups flood in. Under the banyan trees, only the locals are drinking tea. For the Nanjing Tulou, choosing Tianluokeng and Yunshuiyao is enough. The stairs inside the buildings are steep, so it’s fine for parents to just sit in the courtyard downstairs and look. 📍 You can taste the Hakka rice wine in the Tulou homes, but don’t buy too much—it makes your luggage heavy. The Binhai Volcanic National Geopark is best for the afternoon. The basalt columnar joints are lined up along the seaside; it’s windy, but the path is flat. ⚠️ The electric carts inside the Volcano Island scenic area cost extra. Ask about the route clearly before buying tickets. 5️⃣ Jingdezhen | Jiangxi The Taoxichuan Cultural and Creative District was converted from old factory buildings. With red brick chimneys and glass curtain walls, my parents were even more enthusiastic about taking photos than I was. ⏰ After 5:00 PM, all the stalls are out. The prices for handmade porcelain range from tens to thousands of yuan—don’t bargain too aggressively. 📍 Taoxichuan has a market on weekends, but it’s quiet on weekdays. Check the schedule before you go. 🍜 Try the cold noodles and fried dough sticks wrapped in sticky rice cakes as snacks in the park. For a full meal, go to Zhejiang Road for alkaline noodles. At the Ancient Kiln Folk Customs Museum, you can watch master craftsmen throwing pottery. My dad squatted there watching for half an hour. ⚠️ The prices in the porcelain shops inside the scenic area are inflated. If you want to buy, go to the Sculpture Porcelain Factory or the International Trade Ceramics City; the same quality is 30% cheaper. 6️⃣ Shannan | Tibet The blue of Yamdrok Lake is the kind of blue that makes you shut up the moment you see it. ⏰ Arrive at the Gangbala Pass before 10:00 AM. The clouds haven’t gathered yet, and the lake surface looks like satin. If you’re taking your parents, I recommend chartering a car from Lhasa for a one-day round trip. Don’t rush; stop twice in the Yarlung Zangbo River Valley to let your parents acclimate to the altitude. 📍 There’s a fee for taking photos with Tibetan mastiffs at the pass. Ask about the price beforehand, and if you aren’t taking a photo, don’t raise your phone. ⚠️ The altitude at Yamdrok Lake is 4,400 meters. Have your parents acclimate in Lhasa for two days beforehand, and keep Rhodiola and oxygen bottles ready. It’s windy, so bring hats and scarves, and don’t push yourselves. 7️⃣ Ningbo | Zhejiang Tianyi Pavilion & Moon Lake is great for a slow stroll. The garden is small but exquisite. My dad spent a long time looking around the Mahjong Origin Exhibition Hall. ⏰ Get there as soon as it opens at 9:00 AM; the tour groups don’t arrive until after 10:00 AM. In the Xikou Tengtou Tourist Area, take your parents on the small train for a tour—it saves energy. 📍 The three treasures of Qiantong Ancient Town—tofu, dried tofu, and hollow tofu—are made and sold fresh on the old street. Eat them while they’re hot. 🚄 It takes about an hour by bus from downtown Ningbo to Xikou, or about 80 yuan by taxi. Qiantong Ancient Town and Xikou are not in the same direction, so do them on two separate days; don’t try to cram them into one. ⚠️ Some old houses in Qiantong charge separate small admission fees. A joint ticket is more cost-effective; ask at the window. 8️⃣ Pingliang | Gansu Kongtong Mountain is the most physically demanding stop on this trip, but the cable car can save the day. ⏰ Take the first cable car up the mountain at 8:00 AM. The fog hasn’t cleared, and the Taoist temples are hidden in the clouds. 📍 The stairs from Zhongtai to Huangcheng are steep. If your parents can’t walk it, just head back to Zhongtai the way you came to drink tea. 🍜 The mutton paomo and Jingning roast chicken at the farmhouses at the foot of the mountain are ten times better than the instant noodles on the mountain. 🚄 A taxi from Pingliang Station to Kongtong Mountain takes about 20 minutes. You can also take a bus, but they are infrequent. ⚠️ The temperature on the mountain is 5–6 degrees lower than in the city. If you go in October, bring a light down jacket for your parents. Of these 8 places, I highly recommend taking your parents to Suqian and Ningbo first—the roads are flat, the food is soft, and the pace is slow. Where are you planning to go for the National Day holiday? Let’s chat in the comments, and I’ll help you see if it’s too tiring.

Large temperature difference between day and night: It's in the 20s (°C) during the day and in the teens (°C) in the morning and evening. Be sure to bring a windproof light jacket for hiking. The UV rays are strong, so a hat, sunscreen, and lip balm are essential. The Northwest climate is dry, so drink plenty of water. 2. There are many steps at Mount Kongtong. Seniors and children should act according to their physical ability. Prioritize the scenic shuttle + cable car; don't force yourself to hike the entire way. 3. Don't buy overpriced local specialties at the entrance of the scenic area. It's more cost-effective to buy braised chicken and apples at supermarkets in the city. 4. The museum is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. Photography is prohibited inside the grotto halls. 5. Dayun Temple in Jingchuan is far from the city center, and public transportation is inconvenient. Carpooling or driving yourself is recommended.

Many people don’t know that such a divine mountain is hidden in the vast northwest! Kongtong Mountain is hailed as the Number One Taoist Mountain in China and the First Mountain of the West. It is also the birthplace of the Kongtong Sect martial arts in Jin Yong’s novels. For thousands of years, the Taoist aura has persisted and incense has never ceased. The Danxia cliffs hold temples suspended in midair, the forest sea is wrapped in mist around strange peaks, combining the grandeur and majesty of northwest mountains with the serene and ethereal atmosphere of a Taoist immortal mountain, fully immersing visitors in a martial arts ambiance. 🏔️ Peak Height The main peak, Xiangshan, stands at 2,123 meters above sea level, with the overall elevation ranging from 1,456 to 2,123 meters, and a vertical drop of over 600 meters. After hundreds of millions of years of mountain-building and erosion, it has formed strange peaks, sheer cliffs, canyons, natural caves, and stone pillars. The red rocks paired with ancient pines, deep ravines, and overlapping ridges create a high forest coverage area, making it a rare Danxia forest-sea composite geological secret realm in the northwest. ☁️ Climate Characteristics Temperate semi-humid continental monsoon climate, best visited in spring and summer. The mountain area is cool and moist, with an average summer temperature around 20°C, a natural summer resort and oxygen bar; There is a large temperature difference between day and night, with morning fog and clouds common, and the sea of clouds after rain is breathtaking; Most precipitation occurs in summer, with rapidly changing weather and occasional showers. 🛤️ Trail Features Mainly composed of ancient thousand-year-old bluestone paths, cliff stone steps, forest-shaded trails, and suspended plank roads. Most shaded forest paths are gentle and easy to walk, with dense tree cover providing shade; The core “Heaven Ladder” and “Imperial City” stone steps are steep and narrow, requiring slow walking and holding onto railings; The trails are built along the mountain, with Danxia cliffs on one side and deep forest valleys on the other, offering highly scenic walking experiences. ⛰️ Must-Visit Sections 1. Don’t trust strangers at the entrance offering cheap guides, ticket evasion, fortune-telling, or expensive incense offerings—these are all scams. 2. Do not take undeveloped wild paths or Danxia cliff trails on your own; they are easy to get lost on and have rockfall risks. Only use official trails. 3. When climbing the Heaven Ladder, avoid crowding and pushing; hold the iron chains and walk slowly, watch your step. 4. Don’t buy wild medicinal herbs, strange stones, or antiques from roadside vendors; prices are inflated and fakes are common. 5. The mountain has large day-night temperature differences; don’t wear only short sleeves, always bring a jacket to avoid catching cold.

Pingliang, a low-key little town in Gansu where summer doesn’t get outrageously hot and autumn comes early, August and September are a great time to come and play here. The weather is not extreme, the scenery is comfortable, not so many fancy things, real scenery and life atmosphere, very suitable for friends who want to slowly stroll, eat some authentic food. Let’s start with the weather and clothing: August is cool and just the beginning of summer, the average temperature is probably around 20°C-30°C, the sun will be hotter during the day, but the shade is quite comfortable, occasionally rain, it is recommended to bring a sunny and rainy umbrella. Wear short sleeves, thin long pants, and a thin jacket. It's a bit cool in the morning and evening. By September, the temperature slowly drops, with an average temperature of around 15°C-25°C. There is a big temperature difference. Bring a thicker jacket when you go out. Be careful of catching cold. Attraction recommendations, real: 1. Kongtong Mountain (must visit) The sign of Pingliang, a famous Taoist mountain, the mountain is not high but the scenery is good, there is Danxia landform, red stones, there are many temples on the mountain. Go in August, the mountains are cool, you can see the green trees; go in September, the leaves start to turn yellow, the mountain scenery more layered. It is recommended to go early, the hike will not be too tiring, you can take the cable car up and down, do not walk in the sun, it will be very sunny. Tickets are not expensive and you can save money by buying them early online. 2. Willow Lake Park Old parks in the city where locals often go for walks. The lake is not big, but walking around the lake, looking at the willow trees, lotus flowers (the lotus flowers are still blooming in August, may fade in September), blowing the wind, quite relaxing. Go at dusk, there are not many people, and you can still watch the sunset. 3. Longquan Temple It is located next to Kongtong area, with spring water, and the environment inside the temple is quiet. In August, the spring water is cool, and there are many trees in the temple, which is suitable for summer vacation; in September, the ginkgo leaves in the temple turn yellow, which is quite beautiful to take pictures. The incense is not very strong, there is not much of a commercial atmosphere, it is quite good to stroll around in peace and quiet. 4. The Palace of Queen Mother of Jichuan It's not far from the city. Those who believe in the Queen Mother can go and have a look. The architecture is quite characteristic, the view of the mountain is wide, go for a hike in August, to breathe fresh air in September, suitable for friends who like cultural monuments. 5. Jingning Chengji Cultural City If you are interested in history, you can visit Jingning County. There are cheap historical exhibitions in the Cultural City to learn about the local customs. No tickets are required. Just stroll around. Local food, no exaggeration, really good: 1. Mutton soaked dumplings The flat and cool lamb dumplings are a bit different from those in Xi'an. The soup is clear and the lamb is not greasy. The dumplings are hand-broken, with some spicy and coriander. A bowl of it in the morning will warm the stomach. Just find an old shop on the street, look at the crowded, clean one, the taste is almost the same. 2. Jing Ning Grilled Chicken Stuffed chicken, the taste is salty, the meat is rotten but not woody, can be eaten as a snack or served with wine, sold next to the train station, bus station, vacuum packaging can be taken away. 3. Noodles Made of soba noodles, coarse, served with lamb soup or vegetarian soup, with some leeks and dried tofu, refreshing in summer and warm in winter, roadside shops are available. 4. Pot helmet Big cakes, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with some pickled vegetables or stewed meat, very filling, suitable as dry food, when in a hurry to bring one, convenient. 5. Apples September is the season for cheap and cool apples to ripen. They are available at fruit stalls on the street. They are crispy, sweet and juicy. They are not expensive. You can buy them and eat them directly or take them back. They are cheaper than supermarkets. Traffic guide, no turning and beating corners: 1. To flat cool: · Train: Pingliang has a railway station, Xi'an, Lanzhou, Yinchuan over the service more, buying tickets convenient. · Bus: Direct buses are frequent in surrounding cities in the province. · Airplane: There is no airport in Pingliang, you have to fly to Lanzhou or Xi'an, and then change the train/bus over, which is more frustrating. 2. Transportation in the city: · Bus: Buses can be reached between city attractions, fares are cheap, but the frequency may not be many, check the time early. · Taxi: The starting price of taxis is not expensive, it is convenient to go anywhere in the city, drivers generally do not jump the meter, it is recommended to use a taxi app. · Bicycles: There are many shared bicycles in urban areas. Accommodation recommendations, affordable: 1. Express hotels (such as Home, Hanting) There are many chain stores in the city, clean and hygienic, the price is around a hundred dollars, convenient location, close to the attractions, suitable for family or friends outing. 2. B&B/Inn There is a B&B at the foot of Mount Kongtong. The price is slightly higher, but the environment is good and quiet at night. It is suitable for those who like hiking. 3. Do not buy high-priced things in scenic spots: souvenirs, specialties to the supermarket to buy, half cheaper. Finally, a few more words: Pingliang is not a popular tourist city, there are not so many celebrity photo spots, if you want to find a down-to-earth small town, eat some specialty food, walk the mountains, breathe fresh air, Pingliang is good. Well, all that has to be said, let’s experience the rest for yourself. Have fun, eat and drink and have fun!

Just got back after fully exploring Pingliang No exaggeration or criticism! The scenery is truly refreshing and cool But the experience was really grueling! Went without any planning, 90% will end up exhausted and overwhelmed If you’re planning to escape the heat or visit Kongtong Mountain in Pingliang Take my advice! Read this before deciding to come 🙏 ❌ First, the most honest warnings (all hard lessons learned) 1. Never navigate directly to "Kongtong Mountain gate" Biggest trap!! Countless people wasted a trip You can’t buy tickets or enter the park at the gate! You must search for: Kongtong Ancient Town Visitor Center If you go to the wrong place, you have to turn back, wasting half an hour and ruining your mood 2. Kongtong Mountain is really exhausting! Pure physical torture It’s not an ordinary hill! Endless stone steps, steep slopes, and constant climbing Looks low but walking it is brutal on legs and knees ❌ Not for those who don’t exercise, are weak, or bring elderly or kids! 3. Cable car has a strict cutoff! If you’re late, you must walk down The cable car closes promptly at 4 PM No matter how late it gets or how many visitors remain If you miss it, you have to walk down thousands of steps After rain, the steps are very slippery with lots of moss, making it tiring and dangerous! 4. The weather is extremely challenging Pingliang’s temperature difference is crazy! Strong sun and UV during the day, you’ll tan fast The mountaintop wind is freezing cold, short sleeves give you goosebumps Temperature difference of over 10 degrees between morning and night Wear too much and you’re hot, wear too little and you’re cold, very uncomfortable 5. The park has many scams, don’t trust random people on the road Lots of “guides” at the entrance offering cheaper routes or rides All traps! They take detours and force stops at shopping spots Don’t buy roadside cheap local specialties or wild honey Overpriced, poor quality, pure waste of money 6. Mountain paths are very slippery! Wrong shoes will ruin your trip Steps are damp year-round, mossy, and polished smooth Don’t wear white sneakers, canvas shoes, or flat shoes You’ll slip with every step and risk falling 7. Attractions are very spread out, transportation is exhausting Pingliang’s attractions are scattered No subway, slow public transport Without driving or private car hire, traveling is a hassle ✅ Honestly: who is it for? Who is it not for? ✅ For: Those who love hiking, have good stamina, enjoy peace and quiet, want to escape the heat, and like northwest mountain scenery ❌ Not for: Lazy people, those who get tired easily, have bad knees, bring kids or elderly, want a relaxing vacation, or are sensitive to sun or cold ✔️ The right way to enjoy it with less effort (avoid pitfalls) 1. Take the cable car up, walk down The easiest combo! Avoid suffering the whole way and still enjoy the views 2. Must-have gear: Non-slip sports shoes + light jacket + high SPF sunscreen No matter how hot, it’s cold at the top 3. Don’t buy specialties inside the park Jingning apples, roast chicken, walnuts, daylilies Buy them at city supermarkets! Cheaper, authentic, no scams 4. Try to come on weekdays Weekends are crowded, steps packed with people, photos full of backs of heads 🍜 Pingliang food without traps ✔️ Pingliang helo noodles ✔️ Local cold noodles, crispy cakes ✔️ Jingning roast chicken Affordable, generous portions, local snacks are generally safe bets 💥 Honest summary Pingliang’s scenery is truly healing and very cool in summer It’s a beautiful, lesser-known northwest summer getaway But it’s really not for those who want to rush in blindly or take it easy If you have low stamina or hate hassle, think carefully! Think carefully! Think carefully! With the right planning, it’s a summer paradise Going blindly means a torturous trip 😭

Beyond its stunning scenery, Northwest China's cuisine is another must-try. Here's a personal favorite: the three chicken giants – you'll crave them after you've tasted them. · *Shaanxi Gourd Chicken:** The skin is fried to a golden-brown, crispy perfection, crackling with every bite. The meat inside is so tender it practically falls off the bone, melting in your mouth. Served with special Sichuan peppercorn salt, it's savory, slightly numbing, and incredibly flavorful. A dish served at state banquets, definitely worth a try. · *Xinjiang Big Plate Chicken:** This dish embodies hearty goodness. A large plate arrives, with large, tender chicken pieces and fluffy potatoes soaked in the broth. The slightly spicy and fragrant sauce is incredibly appetizing. Adding noodles is the soul of the dish; handmade wide noodles soak up the broth's essence, becoming even more flavorful than the meat. · *Gansu Jingning Roasted Chicken:** Slow-cooked in a rich broth, the spices penetrate to the bone, resulting in an enticing reddish-brown color. Tear it apart by hand; the meat is firm yet chewy, becoming more flavorful with each bite. Perfect as a snack or with drinks, and a great addition to any trip. · *Gansu Jingning Roasted Chicken:** Slow-cooked in a traditional broth, the spices penetrate to the bone, giving it an irresistible reddish-brown color. Enjoy it by hand; the meat is firm yet chewy, becoming more flavorful with each bite. Great as a snack or with drinks, and a perfect addition to any trip. In Xi'an, Shaanxi, consider visiting time-honored restaurants near the Muslim Quarter or Bell Tower, and combining this with a day trip to the Terracotta Warriors and Big Wild Goose Pagoda. In Urumqi, Xinjiang, eat at restaurants near the International Grand Bazaar and have a meal after visiting Tianchi Lake to replenish your energy. In Dunhuang, Gansu, while visiting the Mogao Caves, stop by Jingning to try authentic roast chicken, or buy vacuum-packed versions at a specialty shop. Gourd chicken is best eaten fresh to maintain its crispy skin. The broth from the large plate chicken can be used to mix with rice or dip steamed buns; adding wide noodles enhances the flavor. Vacuum-packed Jingning roast chicken can be taken away, but it's best enjoyed quickly. Northwest cuisine is served in large portions, so order accordingly. Check reviews and opening hours before you go; there may be queues during peak season.

The chicken inside is so tender it practically falls off the bone, chewy yet not dry at all. Dipped in the special Sichuan peppercorn salt, it's savory, slightly numbing, and the unique flavor is simply amazing—you'll crave it after just one bite! 😭 🍜 Xinjiang Big Plate Chicken I was shocked by the portion size as soon as it arrived at the table—a huge plate that took up half the table! Excellent value for money! 🔥 The chicken pieces are large, firm, and juicy, the potatoes are stewed until soft and flavorful, and the broth has a hint of spiciness—super appetizing! Trust me, you absolutely must order a serving of handmade noodles! I can't stress this enough, you MUST order them! The noodles, soaked in the rich broth, are even more fragrant than the chicken—definitely the highlight of the dish! I can easily eat two big bowls every time. ✅ 🍜 Gansu Jingning Roasted Chicken This roasted chicken, braised in a decades-old broth, truly has a unique flavor. ✨ The whole chicken is an enticing reddish-brown, the spices completely infusing every strand. Tearing it apart with your hands is incredibly satisfying; the lean meat isn't dry, and the fat isn't greasy. It's perfect as a snack on the go or as an appetizer with drinks. 👍 💡 Useful Tips The portions at Northwest restaurants are generally quite large, so don't order too much if you have a small group to avoid waste! Popular restaurants often have long queues during peak hours, so it's recommended to go during off-peak times or check the numbering system in advance.

I must say, the chickens of Northwest China are the hidden kings. Here are three divine chicken dishes; you'll definitely want to come back for more. · *Gourd Chicken:** A Shaanxi national banquet dish. The skin is fried to a golden, crispy golden brown, while the inside is so tender it falls off the bone—it melts in your mouth yet still has a satisfying chew. Served with special Sichuan peppercorn salt, it has a unique flavor. Eat it hot, and the flavor with the Sichuan peppercorn salt is absolutely divine. A long-established Xi'an restaurant with a great ambiance. A recipe passed down from the Tang Dynasty, it's first boiled and then fried to achieve the perfect crispy exterior and tender interior. · *Big Plate Chicken:** A hearty dish from Xinjiang. Generous portions, it's a sight to behold. The chicken is tender and juicy, the potatoes are soft and flavorful, and the broth is slightly spicy and appetizing. Adding noodles is the soul of the dish; the noodles soak up the broth and are even more flavorful than the meat. Remember to order noodles; a minimum order of three is great value. Originating from Shawan, Xinjiang, it blends the culinary cultures of many ethnic groups. · *Jingning Roasted Chicken:** Slow-cooked in a rich, aged braising liquid from Gansu. The spices permeate every strand of chicken, giving it an enticing reddish-brown appearance. Tearing it apart by hand is incredibly satisfying, the aroma of the braising sauce is irresistible. Buying a whole chicken, tearing it apart, and pairing it with beer is fantastic. A specialty of Gansu, this free-range chicken is slow-cooked in aged braising liquid. Looking for local established brands or reputable restaurants, places like the Muslim Quarter in Xi'an, the Grand Bazaar in Urumqi, and Zhengning Road in Lanzhou all have recommendations. Prices range from 50 to 100 yuan per person, offering good value. Open from lunchtime to evening, so you can avoid long queues during off-peak hours. Northwest cuisine features large portions, so confirm the portion size when ordering, and adjust the spiciness to your liking.

Every morning, a steaming bowl of Lamb Rou Pao Mo, in the afternoon, we climbed Mount Kongtong to see the sea of clouds, and in the evening, we explored the night market and ate Hele Noodles. The kids had a blast and ate heartily – this is what a slow-paced family trip should be like! · -- 🚄 Super Convenient Transportation The high-speed rail goes directly to Pingliang South Station. It's 2.5 hours from Xi'an and 3 hours from Lanzhou, super convenient. Taxis in the city start at 6 yuan, and getting between attractions costs about 10 yuan, so cheap! If attractions are spread out, you can charter a car for 200 yuan a day, making it even more worry-free with kids. ⛰️ Mount Kongtong Guide for Kids Mount Kongtong peak season ticket 110 yuan, off-season 55 yuan, scenic shuttle round trip 48 yuan, cable car one-way 50 yuan. ⚠️ Important tip: Don't navigate to the mountain gate! Navigate directly to the Kongtong Ancient Town Visitor Center! Otherwise, you won't be able to buy tickets at the mountain gate and will make a wasted trip. Must-do Route with Kids Cable car up the mountain → Zhongtai → Huangcheng → Leisheng Peak → Hike down You must take the cable car up the mountain with kids! Otherwise, it takes 2 hours to climb up, and the kids won't be able to walk. After getting off the cable car, you'll be at Zhongtai, which has flat paths and gentle slopes, so kids can walk on their own. 👉 Huangcheng Observation Deck: The light is best from 4-5 PM, perfect for silhouettes, and you can overlook the entire city of Pingliang. 👉 Leisheng Peak: A suspended Taoist temple, incredibly spectacular, great for photos. 👉 Chaotian Gate, Shangtian Ladder: A bit steep, hold your child's hand, and take it slow, no problem. Money-saving Tip During the off-season (November-March), admission is free every Tuesday! You need to book 1 day in advance, saving 110 yuan, what a deal! 🏛️ Great Places to Take Kids in the City Pingliang Museum (Free) Closed on Mondays, don't make a wasted trip! The museum has stunning bronze artifacts and dinosaur fossils, plus AR explanations. The kids watched very intently, and the interactive exhibition area kept them entertained for a long time. There's also a special exhibition on Anding Commandery recently, with over 270 cultural relics, where you can learn a lot of history. Liuhu Park (Free) A century-old garden in the city center, with ancient willow trees lining the lake. In spring, when the willow catkins float, it's as beautiful as snow. You can rent a boat for 50 yuan/hour, feed swans, and the swings by the lake are perfect for photos, keeping the kids entertained all afternoon. Dayun Temple · Wangmu Palace (Joint ticket 20 yuan) Red walls and golden tiles are super photogenic! There's a thousand-year-old prayer wheel, and children can learn to tap the wooden fish with monks, which is adorable. The underground palace houses the Buddha's sarira golden coffin and silver casket, which is incredibly impressive. 🍜 Must-Try Pingliang Delicacies Lamb Rou Pao Mo: Around 25 yuan per person. Do you understand the joy of tearing the bread by hand? The soup is fresh, the meat is tender, and it's amazing with pickled garlic. The owner will make a non-spicy small bowl for children. Hele Noodles: Around 12 yuan per person. Buckwheat noodles are freshly pressed, the broth is rich, and adding a braised egg is only 1 yuan, excellent value for money. Jingning Roasted Chicken: Half a chicken for 30 yuan. Crispy skin, tender meat, fragrant but not dry. You can vacuum pack it as a souvenir. Zhuanglang Warm Pot: Around 40 yuan per person. Copper pot with charcoal, layers of pork belly, meatballs, crispy pork, vermicelli, and tofu. It gets more flavorful the longer it cooks, super comforting in winter. Guokui (Flatbread): 4 yuan/each. Thick and fragrant, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, delicious even on its own. ⚠️ Avoid Pitfalls The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains is significant, so bring a windbreaker regardless of the season. The museum is closed on Mondays, don't make a wasted trip. Wear comfortable sports shoes for Mount Kongtong, as some paths can be slippery. Don't buy local specialties at the scenic area entrance; it's cheaper at supermarkets in the city. · -- Accommodation 🏨 Pingliang Guangcheng Hotel A five-star hotel at the foot of Mount Kongtong, with a garden-style environment, a super large children's playground, and complete family-friendly facilities, making it the top choice for families with kids. 🏨 Pingliang Hotel A four-star hotel in the city center, family rooms with balconies.
