While planning my trip, I read a lot about ryokans—traditional Japanese hot spring inns. Based on reviews, I found the most suitable one, located a short detour from the Tokyo-Osaka route, in the small town of Ito on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. The town itself and the road leading to it are very picturesque: beautiful nature and a black sand beach. My ryokan is called Yokikan. It's an old, cozy place, steeped in time—and that's where its charm lies: in tradition, respect, and tranquility. Upon check-in, we were personally briefed on the rules for staying and visiting the onsen. The staff spoke excellent English. We also chose our breakfast and dinner times. There are two onsen in total, and you must use them according to the schedule provided upon check-in. There are two time slots for visiting the hot springs—one for men and one for women. The onsen itself was beyond praise! It's absolute bliss to relax in a hot spring, especially after long walks in Japan, and watch the evening slowly fall and the lights come on in the houses and streets. I booked a room on the top floor—this gave me the opportunity to take the old funicular up! The room had a tatami (Japanese woven mat) floor. In the evening, futons—special sleeping mattresses—were laid out right on the floor; they were incredibly soft and cozy! A green tea set was also in the room. That evening, at the appointed time, we were served a traditional kaiseki dinner. It consisted of many small dishes that complemented each other. A traditional breakfast was also served in the morning, somewhat reminiscent of dinner. It wasn't like a typical European breakfast with eggs; it was more like fish, broths, and small appetizers. After checking out, we were given a transfer to the train station, and we said goodbye to this wonderful place, so different from the bustling cities. This is an incredible experience that I recommend to anyone planning a visit to Japan!

Highly recommend this place. It's not huge, but it has everything you need. It's near Mt. Omuro, so you can easily stop by while you're in the area. There are many animal species, and the interactivity is very high. There are self-service vending boxes for feeding supplies almost everywhere. It's 200 yen for a bundle of grass, which felt a bit expensive to me. The animals can also roam around freely; I'm really curious how they don't run out of the zoo. Especially the little monkeys, they're jumping around everywhere. I highly recommend this place if you're traveling in Japan. It's worth noting that the last bus from here depends on the park's closing time. You must get to the bus stop and queue before the park closes. When visiting Japan, be sure to plan to spend a day at a traditional Japanese inn, a ryokan ♨️ We stayed at the Yokikan ryokan, located in Ito on the Izu Peninsula. It's 115 years old and is highly recommended by many because it's very accepting of small tattoos. The inn itself is located at the foot of the hill and has two baths, but more on that later 🌊 We were checked into a traditional Japanese-style room with tatami mats and rice paper walls, and the windows had shoji-style bamboo paper lattices. 🪟 Afterward, we changed into yukatas and secured our kimonos with obi sashes. 👘🥋 We then went to a kaiseki dinner—a Japanese multi-course meal. 🍱 After dinner, we went to relax in an onsen bath with hot springs that rise from a depth of 400 meters. Our ryokan has two baths: an indoor one and an open-air one at the top of the hill, reached by a cable car. 🚡Up there, you can watch the sunrise or sunset with a beautiful view of Ito. 🌅 The onsen has a set of rules, and one of them is taking a bath. Naked When it got dark, they laid out futon mattresses for us, and we fell into a deep sleep. And at 6 a.m., we woke up to watch the sunrise in the onsen overlooking Ito. 🥰 After our morning hot baths, breakfast was already waiting for us in our room, as was dinner, with a variety of unusual dishes. 🍱 So that's how our day at the traditional Yokikan inn ended, and another encounter with Fuji lay ahead. 🗻 Ito itself is also an interesting town. Most of the trail winds through the forest, but the paths are easy to follow, featuring plenty of ups and downs with built-in stone steps. The lush woodland, pleasantly humid air, and the sound of the ocean make for pure bliss. This time, there were no complicated transfer schedules, nor the hassle of dragging luggage through unfamiliar stations. We chose a more leisurely way—chartering a car—to embark on a romantic journey of mountains, sea, and lava. Setting off from Shinjuku early in the morning, the city skyline outside the window gradually gave way to lush mountains. When the huge "matcha pudding"—Mount Omuro—appeared before us, it felt like stepping into Makoto Shinkai’s "Your Name." Taking the cable car slowly to the summit, standing on the edge of the dormant volcano, we enjoyed a 360° panoramic view of the silent Mount Fuji and the vast Izu Seven Islands, with the breeze carrying the scent of freedom. After descending, we visited the cactus zoo across the way for a healing encounter with the capybaras. Watching these calm little creatures leisurely soaking in the hot springs, their furry touch instantly smoothed the wrinkles in our hearts. The afternoon was dedicated to the Pacific Ocean. The black lava cliffs of Kinosaki Coast are a love letter left to the sea by a volcano four thousand years ago. Strolling across the 23-meter-high Monki Suspension Bridge, beneath our feet the crashing waves rolled like piles of snow, and the sea breeze howled past our ears. At that moment, the world was reduced to the ultimate clash of blue and black. Thanks to the spontaneity and freedom of chartering a car, we also encountered the legendary "Kinmedai" sea-view train. The train sped along the coastline, with the azure sea just within reach outside the window, as if the next second it would enter the world of a Studio Ghibli animation. As dusk fell, carrying the sea breeze and sunset back to Tokyo, we realized that the meaning of travel might not be about how many sights you check off, but about the luxury of completely wasting time on beautiful things. Izu Shaboten Zoo is located right next to Mount Omuro in Ito City, Shizuoka. It isn't just famous for its vast collection of cacti—it's also an amazing park where you can get up close and personal with a variety of adorable animals! Even if the weather isn't great (it was windy and raining on the day of my visit), you'll still find delightful surprises. The biggest highlight is definitely the therapeutic sight of the famous capybaras soaking in their hot springs. With red pandas, little foxes, African penguins, flamingos, and many more animals around, I had an absolute blast that day. Recommended Route & Highlights: · I highly suggest heading straight to the capybara hot spring area right after entering. Especially in winter, watching the capybaras lazily soak in the bath is incredibly soothing. · Afterward, take a clockwise stroll around the park. It remains open on rainy days. Some animal enclosures are sheltered so you won't get soaked, but bringing a raincoat or umbrella is highly recommended. 2. The grounds aren't spotless, and you might occasionally spot wild critters like mice. Wearing slip-resistant sneakers is a good idea. 3. Adult tickets are around 112 HKD, offering excellent value for money. Spending 2-3 hours here is just right. 4. Since the park's facilities are somewhat spread out, it's best to use your phone's zoom to adjust the angle—your animal photos will turn out much nicer. 5. Try to avoid weekends and Japanese public holidays. Weekdays are far less crowded, making photography much more enjoyable. Mt. Omuro is a mountain situated right next to Ito City. It was once a volcano but is now completely extinct. The views here are absolutely stunning! There's a walking path that circles the crater, giving you a breathtaking 360-degree bird's-eye view of Ito City. From up here, you can even spot Hakone and Mount Fuji too! Right in the center of the mountain, there is now an archery range where you can go down and shoot some arrows. For our trip, we drove from Tokyo. We left a little early, and the drive took about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Once we arrived, we just hopped on the chairlift straight to the top. I highly recommend this place as a great tourist destination. It's truly a Japanese hidden gem! We visited in late September, and the weather wasn't too hot.
