Húsavík ,small towns where we spent a night during our road trip around Iceland. Located on the shores of Skjálfandi Bay in North Iceland, Húsavík is often referred to as the whale-watching capital of Iceland. We stayed at Bjarnabúð, a cozy accommodation near the waterfront. The location was great, with views overlooking the harbor and the colorful town. It was a peaceful place to relax and the property was clean and in good condition. One of the main reasons we chose to stay in Húsavík was for a whale-watching tour. Unfortunately, we weren't lucky enough to spot any whales on the day we went out. Even so, I still felt the trip was worthwhile. Being out on the open water, surrounded by mountains and dramatic Icelandic scenery, was a memorable experience in itself. Sometimes wildlife doesn't cooperate, but the journey was beautiful. The town itself is charming with colorful houses and a picturesque harbor. We also drove up to Húsavík Viewing Point, which offers spectacular panoramic views over the town, the bay, and the surrounding mountains. The contrast between the deep blue ocean and the rugged Icelandic landscape was stunning and definitely worth the short drive. Whale Watching Tours🐋 There are several reputable whale-watching companies operating from Húsavík, including: · North Sailing – One of the oldest and most well-known whale-watching operators in Iceland, famous for its traditional wooden boats and environmentally conscious tours. · Friends of Moby Dick – A smaller local operator offering whale-watching experiences with knowledgeable guides and a more intimate atmosphere. Húsavík Church ⛪ Beautiful old wooden church in the heart of town, built in 1907, known for its unique Swiss chalet-style architecture. . GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths🌅 Another experience that I think you should try when visiting Húsavík is GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths. Unfortunately, it was raining on the day we plan to visit.during our visit, so we decided not to go. Looking back, it's probably the one thing I wish we had made time for. GeoSea features naturally heated seawater rich in minerals. The infinity pools sit on a cliff overlooking Skjálfandi Bay, offering breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding mountains. Arrived in Húsavík at 2:56 PM. First, I went to the Netto supermarket to buy food, then checked into the guesthouse. The original plan was to go whale watching the next day, but since it was only a little past 3:00 PM after checking in, I decided to go whale watching immediately. I had picked up a Húsavík whale watching brochure at a guesthouse I stayed at a few days prior, and a company called North Sailing had a boat departing at 4:30 PM, so I headed out to the whale watching pier at 3:51 PM. I walked to the North Sailing ticket office at 3:56 PM; the whale watching pier is right below it. The 3-hour whale watching tour price listed in their brochure was 12,990 ISK, but buying tickets on-site offered a small discount, bringing the price to 12,591 ISK. I bought a ticket for the 4:30 PM departure. With half an hour until the boat left, I took photos of the nearby scenery. I arrived at the pier to line up for boarding at 4:12 PM. After boarding, I was given an all-in-one thermal waterproof suit to put on. We left the pier at 4:29 PM. The guide on the boat was stationed high up on the bridge, constantly sharing knowledge about whales and local marine geography while keeping a sharp lookout on the sea. Whenever they spotted signs of a whale, they would immediately announce the clock position, and passengers would scramble from one side of the boat to the other. We saw a whale surface just 23 minutes after leaving the pier. After that, we saw a whale show its back and tail about every 15–20 minutes. We saw them 8 times in total, though unfortunately, most were quite far away and only surfaced for a few seconds, making it fleeting to watch or take photos. There is a small island in the bay called Lundey (Puffin Island), where about 200,000 puffins nest during the breeding season each year. May to August is puffin-watching season, and all whale watching companies in Húsavík offer whale watching + puffin watching tours. The 3.5-hour whale and puffin watching tour offered by North Sailing costs 16,490 ISK. The whale watching activity was limited to the bay, and with light wind and small waves that day, the boat ride was smooth. There were several whale watching boats in the bay, and they shared information with each other; if one boat spotted a whale, it would immediately notify the others, and nearby boats would rush over to watch. I watched for whales from the deck for the first half of the trip and climbed up to the platform above the bridge for the second half. Once on the high platform, I didn't have to run back and forth between the sides of the boat anymore. After cruising around the bay for about 2 hours, the whale watching activity basically ended, and the boat headed toward the snow-capped mountains for a close-up view of the Víknafjöll mountains. On the way back, we saw signs of whales in the distance again, so the boat immediately turned back to check them out, which shows how dedicated the captain was. Finally, on the return trip, the guide introduced the two types of whales we saw today: humpback whales and minke whales. We returned to the pier at 7:25 PM, ending the 3-hour whale watching trip. It will appeal to enthusiasts of European politics and history, offering a stronger focus on political developments rather than social history. However, it falls short in offering merchandise options for visitors.

The day's itinerary is relaxed. From Húsavík to Akureyri is a 97 km drive, with only one planned stop along the way: Goðafoss. The drive from Húsavík to Goðafoss is 47 km. Half an hour after leaving Húsavík, we could see Goðafoss in the distance. We arrived at the Goðafoss east parking lot around 11:35 AM. Parking is free, and the restroom costs 200 ISK per person. We first took photos and enjoyed the view from the various observation decks on the east bank of the river. There is a pedestrian bridge connecting the east and west banks of the river. The information board at the site describes Goðafoss (via Google Translate): Legend has it that in the year 1000, Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði, a chieftain and "law speaker" of the Althing (Icelandic Parliament), was tasked with deciding whether Icelanders should convert to Christianity. He successfully persuaded his countrymen to accept the new religion. Upon returning home, he threw his pagan idols into the waterfall. It is said that the name Goðafoss (Waterfall of the Gods) originates from this event. The waterfall is 12 meters high and is located on the Skjálfandafljót river, which is 180 km long and the fourth longest river in Iceland. On the east bank, you can walk down to the water's edge to view the falls. There are parking lots on both the east and west sides. The view of the waterfall from above is more spectacular. The weather was clear that day. The arc-shaped waterfall was powerful, with turquoise water, creating a magnificent scene. The river is wide upstream of the waterfall. By this point, we had visited all 7 famous waterfalls planned for our trip (Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Gullfoss, Bruarfoss, Svartifoss, Dettifoss, and Goðafoss). Each of these 7 waterfalls has its own unique features and beauty, and all are worth seeing. However, in terms of comfort, convenience, viewing angles/distance, and the number of vantage points, Goðafoss ranks first. Afterward, we walked across the bridge to the west bank to view the falls. The view from the west bank is not as good as from the east. We ate our packed lunch at a picnic table with a view of the waterfall. Far in the northeast of Iceland, where the roads become quieter and the landscape becomes wilder, you’ll find Ásbyrgi — one of the most spectacular places in North Iceland. 🏔️🌿 At first glance, it looks almost impossible that this enormous horseshoe-shaped canyon is natural. 🪨 A Canyon Like No Other Ásbyrgi is around 3.5 km long and over 1 km wide, surrounded by enormous cliffs rising up to around 100 metres. Europe's largest whale museum, Whales of Iceland, is located right here, featuring over 25 life-size whale models accompanied by immersive underwater sound and lighting effects—it's truly breathtaking. However, my go-to spot for watching soccer isn't inside the museum, but rather on the second floor of a nearby cafe housed in a converted old fishing boat. The wooden floors still retain the slight curvature of a ship's cabin, the windows beautifully frame the harbor views, and a large screen hangs among nautical charts and vintage photos. This isn't your typical loud sports bar; it's one of the few quiet spots that broadcast "niche matches"—while everyone else is glued to the heavyweight clashes, this space is reserved for fans who just want to focus on non-mainstream games. My football night kicked off in Fredrikstad, the gateway to the Oslofjord—a city boasting the country's oldest brick fortress walls (Gamlebyen)—at the old ferry terminal on the Hvalerferga pier. This wooden waiting hut, where ferries bound for the Hvaler archipelago (Hvalerøyene) once arrived and departed, has now been reborn as a cozy cafe and bar. I settle into a seat on the terrace, my eyes glued to the live stream of the World Cup knockout stage on my tablet. On screen, a fateful Penalty Shootout unfolds—for those few seconds when the entire world holds its breath, the wind sweeping across the fjord and the silhouettes of the islands on the opposite shore (Spjærøy) quietly linger in the background. I joined a whale watching tour, and honestly, it was unreal! The moment those massive whales surfaced near the boat, I couldn’t stop smiling. The air was fresh and cold, but the excitement made me forget everything else. The harbor area is adorable, with colorful houses and cafes serving the best hot chocolate ever. I also checked out the Whale Museum, which gave me a whole new appreciation for these gentle giants. Everything in Husavik just feels peaceful and friendly. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, and nature takes center stage in the most magical way possible.

The waterfall is considered one of the most famous and largest waterfalls in Europe, the sound was clear and I was standing near it. The constantly flowing water formed a beautiful frontal view, and a light mist flooded the place. The surrounding landscape was breathtaking, the black rocks and wild plants added a unique beauty to the place. Witnessing whales for the first time was an unforgettable experience. Thanks to the incredible excursion with @getyourguide, the Icelandic fjords offered a breathtaking encounter with these magnificent creatures. It's an adventure you simply can't miss!
