The Huining Red Army Meeting Site’s main buildings include the Meeting Hall, the Red Army Meeting Celebration Venue, the Three Armies Meeting Memorial Tower, the Long March Generals’ Monument Forest, and the Red Army Long March Victory Memorial Hall. I visited Silver City last September. I originally planned just to transfer through Jingtai, but ended up staying 3 days in Tongcheng—Yellow River Stone Forest, Gobi Turtle City, red Huining, and industrial mining pits are all packed into one prefecture-level city. There are so few people that you can park anywhere in the scenic area, and prices are still stuck at 5 years ago😮‍💨 But if you go in July or August, you really have to pick your timing carefully. The Gobi can cause sunburn by noon. About 2 hours from Baiyin city, only go if it fits your route; it’s a bit far out. ⛏️ Flame Mountain National Mining Park (Baiyin District | free) The open-pit mine and old mining equipment of “China’s copper city.” Industrial style perfect for photos. The museum tells the story of the copper city’s struggle (also closed on Mondays). Taxi from the city costs under ¥8. You can finish in 1.5 hours, perfect combined with the city museum. 🌾 Shuichuan Yellow River Wetland Park (Shuichuan Town, Baiyin District | free) Reeds and lotus boardwalks along the Yellow River bank. Lush green in summer, swans during migratory season (October–March). Bus 31 from the city takes about 30 minutes. Evening strolls relieve Gobi visual fatigue. On the way, stop at Huacun Gujiashan (white walls, black tiles, a little Jiangnan) for a bowl of tea. If short on time, prioritize: Stone Forest > Turtle City > Mining Park > Shuichuan. Longwan Village guesthouses offer three times the experience of Jingtai town, and it’s so quiet at night you can hear the Yellow River. 🍜 What to eat (three flavors from Tongcheng, Jingyuan, and Jingtai) 🐑 Jingyuan lamb: the top local delicacy in Baiyin, 30–45 day old lambs raised on the plains, no gamey taste. Braised, hand-pulled, or stir-fried, all excellent, served with thick porridge rice. Old shops around Gongnong Road in Baiyin District and near the international city in Jingyuan County are the best, about ¥60–80 per person. Avoid the row near the high-speed rail station; go into the alleys of the old residential area. 🥘 Sour stewed meat: pickled cabbage braised pork belly with white noodles, a unique sour and spicy dish from the Loess Plateau, perfect with rice. Old restaurants near Gongyuan Road, about ¥35–40 per person. 🍜 Jingtai niangpi + noodle lumps: Jingtai niangpi has a rich sesame paste and chewy texture. The street stall Wang’s niangpi is the most authentic. Jingtai handmade braised meat noodles and gray bean noodles (made from flat beans with a sandy texture) are the soul of county breakfasts, about ¥15–20 per person. 🍯 Yiwo silk: sesame oil golden silk cake, an intangible cultural heritage snack. Buy packaged boxes from old Jingyuan pastry shops as souvenirs, ¥20 per box. 🌙 Night market trio: Wuyi Street / Gongnong Road night market — roasted lamb trotters (¥10 each), stir-fried bolala (iron plate lamb offal), milk egg fermented rice wine, about ¥30 per person to eat until full. Surface temperatures can reach 40°C in July–August, and there’s no shade in the Stone Forest canyon. · Yongtai Turtle City has no convenience stores or public toilets. Bring water, tissues, and cash (city wall admission ¥5 sometimes only accepts cash). · Yellow River Stone Forest donkey carts can be shared. Four people per cart, about ¥20–25 per person. Don’t rent one alone. · Mining Park and Meeting Site are closed on Mondays. Don’t schedule visits then. · Agree on car rental prices before getting in. Jingtai → Turtle City round trip costs about ¥100–150 per car. Additional travel tips 1. Check the memorial hall’s opening announcements before traveling. The hall is closed every Monday (except public holidays). Avoid internal closure periods for upgrades. 2. The outdoor exhibition area receives strong sunlight in summer, so prepare sun protection. Free public guided tours are mostly scheduled for groups at fixed times. Individual visitors should call ahead to inquire about tour times. 3. Entry requires real-name registration with a personal ID. During holidays, it is recommended to book in advance via the "One Phone Tour Gansu" mini program. 4. Maintain solemnity throughout the park. Running, loud noise, and disrespect toward revolutionary history and cultural relics are prohibited.

There are many especially niche grottoes in northern China. Although they are not as famous as the major grottoes like Yungang, Dunhuang, and Longmen, their niche nature makes them uniquely special. Few people know about them, and they are fantastic spots for photos and check-ins. Today’s recommendation is a super niche grotto near the Yellow River Hydropower Station in Jingtai County, Gansu Province — the Wufuyan Temple Grottoes. [Cute] Wufuyan Temple is located by the Yellow River in Wufu Township. The temple houses grottoes that were first built during the Northern Wei dynasty. They have a long history and exquisite craftsmanship. Inside the grottoes are five large Buddha statues, with thousands of smaller Buddhas on both sides, commonly called the Thousand Buddha Temple. Wufuyan Temple still has a strong local following, with many locals visiting regularly. The Shakyamuni Buddha inside the grotto was restored during the Kangxi period of the Qing dynasty. The other three Buddhas have varied postures and calm expressions, with slender waists, round faces, and prominent square chins. They date from the late Song dynasty. At the rear corners of the grotto, two clay Buddhas sit on lotus pedestals with tied waists. They are larger than the others, with gilded, full faces and dignified postures. Both wear a “sengqi zhi” robe underneath a kasaya. [TeaDrinker] In front of the grotto is a three-story pavilion made of brick and wood, directly attached to the cliff face, cleverly integrated with the grotto to form the antechamber. The lighting inside the grotto is quite dim, so it’s recommended to bring your phone flashlight. Climbing the pavilion is currently not allowed. It is said that with the upcoming construction of the Yellow River Heishan Gorge Hydropower Project, the area where Wufuyan Temple is located will be included in the reservoir zone, and the grottoes will be submerged underwater. So if you want to see it, you should go soon. 🚗 Wufuyan Temple is currently free to visit. There is a parking lot at the entrance, though it’s small and can hold about a dozen cars. There are not many visitors at the moment. Wufuyan Temple is right next to the Yellow River. Across the river is the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, facing Zhongwei. Travelers visiting Zhongwei, Ningxia, can easily cross the Yellow River to visit. It’s very close.
