Known as the “No. 1 mansion in southern Inner Mongolia,” it offers a one-stop experience to understand nearly 300 years of Qingcheng’s history through the story of one general’s mansion. Admission is free and no reservation is needed; just show your ID to enter. The museum has 11 exhibition halls, including 5 core themed displays, with over 110,000 artifacts, among which 96 are precious cultural relics. 1. Historical background 1. Suiyuan city: In the 13th year of Emperor Yongzheng’s reign (1735), to prevent the Zunghar from invading the border again and to manage the Mongolian tribes in Guihua city nearby, the Qing dynasty chose a site five li northeast of Guihua city to build a garrison camp for the right guard of the Eight Banners. Construction of the new city began in the second year of Emperor Qianlong’s reign, who personally named it “Suiyuan city.” Because the north gate, east gate, main street, and drum tower are not aligned, there is a folk saying about “four gates not matching, drum tower not straight.” 2. Suiyuan general: The highest official in Inner Mongolia during the Qianlong period, directly appointed by the emperor with the rank of first-class official. The general oversaw local defense, governance, and public order. Starting from the second year of Qianlong’s reign, when General Wang Chang, previously stationed in Shanxi’s right guard, was ordered to move to Suiyuan city, until the last general Kunxiu in the second year of Xuantong, there were 79 generals in total. The jurisdiction included the Khalkha Mongols, extending south to Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces, governing all of southern Inner Mongolia. 3. Architectural style The general’s mansion was built strictly according to the “Great Qing Code” and the Qing Ministry of Works engineering regulations for first-class stationed generals. It features a first-class exclusive layout with three courtyards and five gates, following the ritual arrangement of “government affairs in front, residence in back,” with clear functional zoning. The stone lions on the screen wall at the entrance and the hierarchical ceremonial gates fully display the dignity of a high-ranking official. Core buildings inside include the main hall, second hall, third hall, seal room, official rooms, and Buddhist hall. The third and fourth halls were originally the general’s private quarters. The fourth hall was destroyed by fire in the 13th year of the Republic (1924) and rebuilt the same year. Now only the third hall remains; the fourth hall has been demolished. The architecture is well adapted to Hohhot’s harsh northern climate with severe cold, strong winds, sandstorms, and large temperature differences. It faces due south and north, with thick walls and gently sloped roofs for wind and cold protection, emphasizing practicality. Recommended route It is recommended to follow a chronological order from ancient to modern times, starting from the main buildings to the gardens, from the museum’s special exhibitions to wartime sites, to fully understand the mansion’s century-long changes. I decided to go with the flow. I stopped obsessing over tourist checklists and stressing over itineraries. I simply found a shady spot to sit quietly, idly watching the clouds roll by and the scenery unfold peacefully, letting the outside noise fade away from my mind. The pent-up anxiety and chaotic thoughts from my past slowly settled and melted away in this peaceful, everyday atmosphere. My mind became crystal clear, completely untethered and free. It was then I realized that the most precious state in life is never about being constantly on the move, but rather guarding your inner peace and taking things one day at a time. The Yungang Grottoes, originally named Lingyan Temple and Shifo Temple, are located 17 km west of Datong city in Shanxi Province, on the southern slope of Wuzhou Mountain. They are one of China’s most famous grotto groups. The carving of the Yungang Grottoes began during the Northern Wei period. In the third year of the Huangshi era (398), Emperor Daowu Tuoba Gui moved the capital from Shengle (now Helingeer County) to Pingcheng (now Datong city), making Wuzhou Mountain a key transportation hub between Shengle and Pingcheng. After Emperor Wencheng Tuoba Jun ascended the throne, he appointed the monk Tan Yao to lead the restoration project. With Emperor Wencheng’s support, Tan Yao chose the spiritually rich Wuzhou Mountain to “carve the mountain rock walls, open five caves, and sculpt one Buddha statue in each, the tallest 70 feet, the next 60 feet, with magnificent and extraordinary decorations, unmatched in the era.” Most of the Yungang caves were completed before Emperor Xiaowen Yuan Hong moved the capital to Luoyang, but the statues continued to be carved until the Zhengguang period (520–525). The carving of the Yungang Grottoes lasted about 150 years, spanning the Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang dynasties. Today, there are 45 main caves, 252 niches of various sizes, and more than 59,000 stone sculptures, making it a treasure trove of Chinese grotto art. As a grotto authorized by the royal family, the Yungang Grottoes reflect the ambition of the Northern Wei dynasty.
