I drove from Hazyview via the R532 (90 min, tar all the way, 2×4 fine), parked at the fenced viewpoint (no separate fee for the Rondavels themselves — the reserve access is folded into the Panorama Route stops; Bourke's Luck is R150 foreigners / R75 residents, card works there, cash backup wise). The mossy bit isn't on the viewpoint deck — it's the 400 m fenced side-path east along the rim where the quartzite lip stays damp and Fissidens and Bryum grow on the rock, with Adiantum ferns dripping over the edge. I went in May (autumn, low rain) — 17°C at 8 a.m., the canyon floor 400 m below still holding morning mist. Wore trail-runners; the rim path is paved and railed, but the rock lip beside the rail is slick with moss and algae after any drizzle. The Rondavels themselves (Magabolies, Mogoladikwe, Maqwasha, Mapjaneng) are dolomite-and-quartzite pillars, grass-topped, and the moss clumps at their base only show from the side path, not the main deck. Mistake: I arrived at 11 a.m. on a Saturday — tour buses from Graskop filled the car park, the deck was a selfie scrum. Be there at 7:15 a.m. when the gate opens (7 a.m.), or 4:30 p.m. for warm light. Second mistake: I figured "free viewpoint = no cash needed" — true for the Rondavels, but the toilet attendant expects a 5–10 ZAR tip and the curio stalls are cash-only. Third: I leaned on the rail for a wide-angle — the rail is fine, but one panel near the east end is loose; a ranger waved me back. Don't test the infrastructure. Buy at the stall: a 25 ZAR melktert slice, not the 120 ZAR Panorama Route café combo. Gear: a 200 ZAR packable shell from the Graskop shops — canyon fog rolls in fast. Local rule: no drones (reserve ban, rangers at Bourke's Luck radio through), no climbing the fence for "the better angle" (500 m drop, 1,000 ZAR fine), no picking the aloe on the rim. The moss on the quartzite lip is the canyon's only soft edge — don't sit on it, sit on the rail-side rock. Opinion: The Rondavels get shot in 5 minutes and everyone leaves; the mossy rim walk is the 30-minute half nobody sells. Should the reserve build a 200 m boardwalk on the east rim and charge a 30 ZAR honor box, or keep it raw? I'd boardwalk it. Would you drive 90 min past 5 waterfalls just to stand on mossy quartzite above Africa's largest green canyon?

One of my best moments from 2023 was definitely the sunset safari in Kruger National Park, near Hazyview. You are able to see nocturnal animals as well as some amazing views of the sunset! We were in a rather big jeep and were able to have great views with blankets too! Organising the safari from hotels is very easy and safe with lots of information provided before you go

Harrie’s pancakes is a chain of restaurants in South Africa that offer both sweet and aviary types of pancakes. I opted for a beef curry flavoured one and was not disappointed. It tasted like beef rengdan in the middle and the pancake was more like a thick wrap. Indside the restaurant they also had an art section where you could buy the paintings that some of the local artists had made #mytripvlog #urbanexplorer

#hotelstaycation we booked to stay at this lovely resort near the Kruger National Park. The easiest way to get there is a taxi from Nelspruit airport which takes a jus one hour. Each room has a kitchen and full self catering services as well as a hot tub and an area that is suitable for a bbq.
