East Taihang Scenic Area Guide
East Taihang Scenic Area Tour Suggestions
1️⃣ East Taihang Scenic Area Tour Suggestion I The East Taihang Scenic Area is located in Wu'an City, Hebei Province. The mountains here are steep, but with the help of the scenic area's South Heaven Gate cable car and four elevators, you can enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Taihang Mountains and the Danxia landform relatively easily. Most of the mountain trails are gentle and suitable for ordinary tourists. When buying tickets at the visitor center, be sure to get a "Scenic Area Guide Map" and choose between routes A, B, and C based on duration and physical strength.
2️⃣ Route A does not include the important Tianpu scenic spot, and Route C to the highest northern peak is quite tiring and takes longer. It is recommended to take Route B (about 5-6 hours):
Cableway → South Heaven Gate → Sifang Bridge → Sightseeing Elevator Up → Middle Heaven Gate → Flying Ship Restaurant → Take Taihang One Pillar Elevator (direction of Tianjing Lake) → Take Tianpu Elevator → Tianpu Producing Smoke, Tianjing Lake, return → Take Tianpu Elevator → Take Taihang One Pillar Elevator → Taihang One Pillar → Smart Bridge → Cloud Walk → Worship Elephant Platform → Take Hongyan Peak Elevator → Yifang Pavilion (Sunrise Hongyan) → Cableway Upper Station → Visitor Center.
3️⃣ At the South Heaven Gate fork, turn right for Route B; turn left to go to the glass plank road, which takes about 1 hour to return to the South Heaven Gate fork.
4️⃣ It is recommended to buy a ticket + round-trip cableway package (including elevator) for 150 yuan/person. If bought separately: ticket 100 yuan/person, half price for 60 years old, free for 70 years old; round-trip cableway (including elevator) 140 yuan/person.
5️⃣ The scenic area is well managed, clean, with signposts, and there are restaurants, snack bars, and restrooms along the mountain climbing route.
6️⃣ Parking lot: Navigate to "East Taihang Scenic Area Parking Lot", 10 yuan/day. Accommodation: High-end "Wu'an East Taihang Morning Hotel"; near the east gate of Jingniang Lake "Handan Wu'an Diboyuan Holiday Hotel" (enjoy the view of Jingniang Lake from the lake view room), you can buy a combined ticket for East Taihang + Jingniang Lake, each scenic area has its own characteristics.
So close, so beautiful, head to Hebei for the weekend
If you're in Handan or find yourself there, you must visit the Eastern Taihang scenic area at least once. Located within the Wu'an jurisdiction, it is a mountainous natural scenic area that combines the grandeur, strangeness, peril, and steepness of the Taihang Mountains with the beauty of unique rocks, sea of clouds, tranquility, and ever-changing vistas. Strolling along the plank walkways here, with clouds and mist swirling around, it truly feels like 'grasping the beauty of the ridge of heaven, wandering above the clouds,' and life suddenly becomes bright and clear.
It is recommended to take the cable car up (unless you are a physically fit young person), because after taking the cable car, you start from the South Heaven Gate and mostly walk on the cloud-level plank walkways at an altitude of over a kilometer. The whole journey also takes more than 3 hours, and when you reach the Sky Beyond Sky and the Ridge of Heaven, you'll have to climb mountains. Along the way, the scenery is endless and breathtaking.
Visit East Taihang and experience the magnificent winter scenery like 'Jade Dragon Snow Mountain'
As winter arrives, the East Taihang scenic area is like a simple and elegant scroll, displaying the beautiful snow scenery in Huoshui Township, Handan City, Hebei Province. When the mountains are covered with snow, the cliffs are lightly wrapped in pine fluff, and the distant snow mountain ranges come like waves, as if you are in a fairyland like 'Jade Dragon Snow Mountain'.
On the plank road of the East Taihang scenic area, jade trees and beautiful flowers are dotted in between, forming a large picture of the winter atmosphere, making you feel as if you are in a wonderful winter fairy tale. Instead of regretting that you have no chance to see the fantasy of 'Jade Dragon Snow Mountain', why not step on this magical land and look forward to the moment when the layers of snowflakes fall!
This is the East Taihang scenic area, let's walk through the poetic and picturesque snow mountains together!
📍Scenic area address: East Taihang Scenic Area, Huoshui Township, Handan City, Hebei Province

Congtai Park Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
The Wuling Congtai that has waited for you for a thousand years
🌺 Congtai Park, located in the center of Handan City, Hebei Province, is one of the earliest constructed and large-scale historical and cultural parks in Handan. The park's grand and elegant ancient-style gate is inscribed with 'Congtai Park' by Guo Moruo.
🌸 The park is named after the Wuling Congtai in its center, which is said to have been built during the reign of King Wuling of Zhao (325–299 BC) and has a history of over 2000 years.
🏵️ The park is open to the public for free. In spring, stepping into Congtai Park, you will see a riot of flowers blooming under the Congtai, the lake embracing the Congtai, and the lakeside is adorned with ancient pines and green willows, pavilions and towers, reflecting the mountain scenery and the shimmering lake, with light boats dotted about, creating an enchanting landscape.
🌼 Congtai is a symbol of the State of Zhao, a place where the kings of Zhao reviewed their troops and enjoyed song and dance performances. Throughout the long years, it has endured countless natural and man-made disasters, but it still retains its unique classical pavilion style. It stands as a testament to the history of Zhao's capital and a symbol of the ancient city of Handan. A visit to Handan would not be complete without seeing this place.
Handan, the ancient capital of the Zhao state, is the birthplace of Qin Shi Huang and a city rich in idiomatic expressions
Handan is the only historical and cultural city in China that has never changed its name or location since ancient times, boasting a history of over three thousand years. During the Warring States period, it was the capital of the Zhao state. It is also the birthplace of Qin Shi Huang and is known as the 'city of idiomatic expressions.' It is said that there are thousands of idioms related to Handan, with well-known ones including 'learning to walk in Handan,' 'wearing Hu's clothing and shooting on horseback,' and 'returning the jade intact to Zhao.'
Visiting Handan, one can go to Congtai Park in the city to see the Wuling Congtai from the time of King Wuling of Zhao, or to Zhao Yuan Park to tour the Idiom Garden and experience the charm of traditional culture. Walk across the Learning-to-Walk Bridge and try to imitate the graceful walking posture of the people of Zhao, but remember not to forget how to walk when you return!
After exploring history, don't forget to visit the modern Meile City. Since Teresa Teng's ancestral home is in Daming County, Handan, there is a Teresa Teng Garden on the rooftop terrace here, which is themed around Teresa Teng's life story and musical art. From the rooftop, you can also overlook the Handan city area, with the Handan Grand Theater in full view!
Congtai Park
Congtai Park is located in the center of Handan city, with an excellent location. Centered around the Wuling Congtai, the park combines cultural relics, garden landscapes, exhibition halls, and leisure entertainment into one comprehensive park. Although not large in size, it offers a pleasant environment.
The creation of humans by Nüwa took place nearby, a landmark of Handan for 3000 years
Ticket🎫
Wuling Congtai and the Seven Sages Stele Forest joint ticket 5 yuan
👍Highly recommended:
The park is quite large, it is recommended to visit for two hours
Congtai: A place where King Wuling of Zhao during the Warring States period summoned his generals and watched performances, with a history of over two thousand years. It has survived countless floods, wars, and has been repaired through the ages. In modern times, it has undergone several major restorations.
The Seven Sages Temple: Built in honor of the seven sages of the State of Zhao during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, namely Han Jue, Cheng Ying, Gongsun Chujiu, Lian Po, Lin Xiangru, Zhao She, and Li Mu, hence the name Seven Sages Temple.
The temple is a brick-wood structure with a rolling shed and resting hill style. It is five bays wide and one bay deep. The courtyard is paved with blue brick paths, and there is a side door to the west that leads to the stele forest. The roof is covered with yellow glazed tiles in the resting hill style, and there are four red round columns under the corridor, with the front face being wooden carved arch windows. On the east and west sides of the wall are the well-known deeds of the seven sages, such as Zhao She's 'impartial law enforcement', Lian Po and Lin Xiangru's 'returning the jade to Zhao', 'asking for punishment with a thorn bush', 'harmony between generals', and the three loyal acts of Han Jue, Cheng Ying, and Gongsun Chujiu sacrificing themselves to save 'the orphan of Zhao'.
The stele forest corridor to the west of the Seven Sages Temple is called 'Handan Stele Forest'. Inside the corridor, there are dozens of steles inscribed by calligraphers from various dynasties, with high artistic value. China's largest Tang dynasty epitaph, 'The Epitaph of He Hongjing', is also stored here. The epitaph is engraved with the four gods Qinglong, Baihu, Zhuque, and Xuanwu on the front, accompanied by auspicious cloud patterns, creating an imposing atmosphere. This epitaph has survived thousands of years and is still well preserved, truly a national treasure.
🌟Highlights:
In China, there is an ancient city that has created miracles. It has not changed its name for over 3000 years. Legend has it that Nüwa mended the sky and created humans here. Its history is even older than that of Nanjing, yet it is often forgotten by the world. It was once the number one city in the north, the capital of the Zhao state, one of the seven warring states, known as a city rich enough to rival any in the world. Countless people have left their mark here with their writings. In this city, every step is history, with more than half of China's idioms originating from here, recognized as the hometown of idioms. But after 3000 years, it has been submerged for a long time, becoming an inconspicuous little city. Have you guessed where I am talking about? Yes, it is my hometown, Handan in Hebei. Today, I will introduce you to this ancient city that cannot be bypassed in history with a note, not just to understand a city, but to revisit a profound history. You can like and save this, because I believe, in your lifetime, you will have the opportunity to step into this ancient city. Walking in Handan, you will feel an indelible sense of historical vicissitudes. Today's landmark of Handan, Congtai Park, was built more than 2300 years ago during the Zhao state, and Handan, as the ancient capital of Zhao, one of the seven warring states, became the most powerful state in the north after King Wuling of Zhao adopted the military reforms of wearing Hu clothing and archery on horseback. I remember when I was in elementary school, I would go to Congtai Park almost every day.

Wahuang Palace Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
This is a guide to a one-day hiking tour of the suspended nine-chain Huaxia ancestral temple
Actually, before going to the Nuwa Palace, I had no idea that this place existed. If it weren't for a fellow traveler constantly recommending it to me, I probably wouldn't have gone there. In my mind, Nuwa has always been a mythological figure, and I never expected that there would be a real place corresponding to this legend.
The legend of Nuwa is almost universally known; she 'melted five-colored stones to repair the sky, and cut off the giant turtle's legs to establish the four corners of the world,' and her image of saving the world and benefiting all living beings has long been deeply rooted in people's hearts. The Nuwa Palace is the place where, according to legend, Nuwa 'created humans from clay and repaired the sky with stones.' It is also the largest and earliest architectural complex in China dedicated to worshipping Nuwa, the progenitor of humanity.
Of course, the earliest Nuwa Palace actually had little to do with Nuwa herself. It was built during the Northern Qi dynasty as a detached palace by Emperor Wenxuan of Northern Qi, Gao Yang, and has been repaired and expanded over successive dynasties. The current buildings are mostly from the Ming and Qing dynasties, with only the grottoes and cliff carvings remaining from the Northern Qi period.
🕳️ Pitfalls to avoid:
The Nuwa Palace scenic area is quite large, but half a day is enough. Be aware of the pitfalls, especially the sightseeing cars and cable cars; it's actually better to walk. It takes about half an hour to walk from the entrance of the scenic area to the foot of the Nuwa Palace mountain. If you are with the elderly or children, it is recommended to take the sightseeing car directly, as this stretch is quite taxing and there's not much to see along the way, it's purely to sell sightseeing car tickets.
The cable car is also quite superfluous. The cable car's end point is another mountain peak, and it takes about the same time, around half an hour, to walk from the cable car station to the Nuwa Pavilion on the mountain as it does from the foot of the mountain. Of course, if you are with the elderly or children, it is still recommended to take the cable car. The distance is longer, but it's less climbing. If you are young, there's no need to waste the money.
🔀 Route:
Entrance - Butian Lake - Stone Archway - Chaoyuan Palace - Tingchai Palace - Guangsheng Palace - Northern Qi Stone Carving Exhibition Hall - Nuwa Statue - Mountain Trail to Nuwa Palace - Mountain Trail down - Stone Archway
❗ If you're short on time, it's recommended to just take the mountain trail up and back. The trail down the mountain goes around Butian Valley and will take at least an extra hour.
⭐ Highlights:
The nationally protected Nuwa Palace and its stone carvings actually consist of four groups of buildings. In addition, the Northern Qi Stone Carving Exhibition Hall is also worth a visit.
✅ Nuwa Pavilion: The main building of the Nuwa Palace, with its nine chains hanging in the air as a major highlight. More details in the next article.
✅ Chaoyuan Palace: Originally built during the reign of Emperor Kangxi, what you see today is a reconstruction from 1990, built in the style of the Qing dynasty. Entering the palace, you are surrounded by Buddhist culture, while the backyard is filled with folk Taoist deities.
✅ Tingchai Palace: A quaint courtyard that requires climbing steep stairs to enter, the main hall's statue of Nuwa is dignified and composed. On the walls on both sides, there are Qing dynasty murals 'Nuwa Leaving the Palace for an Inspection Tour' and 'Nuwa Returning to the Palace.'
✅ Guangsheng Palace: The largest and oldest group of ancient buildings at the foot of the mountain, the main hall not only has vivid clay figures but also a large mural of 'hundreds of children and thousands of grandchildren,' a place for praying for offspring in mythological legends.
🎫 Tickets:
🔸 Scenic area ticket 70 yuan, 60 yuan if booked online one day in advance
🔸 Sightseeing car from the mountain gate to the foot of Nuwa Palace 10 yuan one way
🔸 Nuwa Palace cable car 40 yuan one way, 70 yuan round trip
The millennia-old Huaxian Palace stands picturesquely atop a cliff
✅Must Experience: Huaxian Palace
- Best time to visit: From the first to the fifteenth day of the third lunar month each year, during which the Huaxian Palace Temple Fair is held, making it quite lively.
- Cliffside Inscriptions: The inscriptions begin at the entrance to the mountain gate and extend all the way to the Huaxian Pavilion, comprising six scriptures with a total of 137,000 characters, embodying the essence of the ancient Huaxian relics.
- Northern Qi Grottoes: The Buddha statues inside are incomplete, but the cliffside carvings are well-preserved.
- Huaxian Pavilion: This palace is connected to the mountain by nine iron chains and is known as 'one of the top ten ancient architectural wonders of Hebei'.
🍽Dining Recommendations:
She County offers many delicacies, such as She County minced chicken, She County pepper sprout vegetables, and minced cotton soup.
🌟Highlights and Features:
In that mysterious and ancient place, there is a solemn and sacred palace—Nuwa Palace.
Nuwa Palace, as if a witness to time, bears the history and legends of a thousand years. It stands quietly there, exuding a peaceful and mysterious aura.
Entering the Nuwa Palace is like stepping into an ancient legend. The architectural style of the palace is elegant and dignified, with every detail reflecting the wisdom and ingenuity of the ancients.
Inside the palace, the great statue of the goddess Nuwa is enshrined. Her face is kind and majestic, as if silently protecting the people of this land.
Here, you can feel a tranquil and sacred atmosphere. It's as if time has frozen, immersing one in the ancient history and culture.
Nuwa Palace is not just a building; it is also a spiritual haven, carrying people's aspirations and hopes for a better life.
It reminds us of Nuwa's great achievements and allows us to feel the long history and splendid culture of the Chinese nation.
Let us step into the Nuwa Palace, experience its mystery and solemnity, and appreciate the ancient charm of the Chinese nation.
Under the spring temple fair, the Wa Huang Palace is crowded with people
Climbing to the top of Wa Huang Pavilion, one can experience the magic of the 'living building hanging temple'.
Deep in the Taihang Mountains, surrounded by mountains and water, there is an ancient relic hanging on almost vertical cliffs by several iron chains. It seems to be teetering, but in fact, it has stood for a thousand years. This is the Wa Huang Palace.
With the arrival of the rejuvenating spring season, Wa Huang Palace also welcomes its annual grand temple fair. Amidst the greenery and the blooming flowers, the sound of gongs and drums fills the air. The temple fair activities start from the first day of March and continue until the fifteenth. On the first day of March, Wa Huang Palace is packed with people and the incense is strong. This day is like a festival. In addition to local societies from Xie County, people who worship Mazu from surrounding areas including Changzhi, Yuci, and even Zhangzhou and Xiamen also come to Wa Huang Palace to participate in the Shangshe festival. This large-scale worship of the goddess Nüwa is also a traditional intangible cultural heritage.
Following the Shangshe procession up the mountain, the green branches are adorned with red ribbons, which are the hopes left by each person who climbs the mountain to pray for blessings.
Upon reaching the top of Wa Huang Palace, we can see Wa Huang Pavilion. The pavilion was built during the Northern Qi dynasty and is the main structure of Wa Huang Palace. The entire building hangs on the cliff, supported only by nine iron chains connected to the cliff face. The columns of the first floor are deeply embedded in the mountain cliff, ensuring a solid foundation; there is a gap between the second-floor pavilion and the mountain cliff; the third-floor pavilion is connected to the mountain cliff by iron chains. When the building encounters external forces, the foundation becomes unstable, the building shakes, and the nine iron chains immediately tense up, stabilizing the building. Therefore, it is also known as the 'living building hanging temple'.
Wa Huang Pavilion has withstood countless geological disasters and remains standing, a testament to the superb and bold architectural skills that bear witness to the resilience and heritage of Chinese civilization.

Xiangtangshan Grottoes Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Even if you go nowhere else in Handan, you must visit this place
The experience of touring the Xiangtangshan Grottoes is really great. You can look as long as you want, take photos however you want, with no fences, barriers, or wire mesh, allowing for an immersive experience. You might miss the museum this year, but there will still be chances ten years later; however, if you don't cherish such a travel experience, who knows if it will still be available in the future.
🚗🚗🚗🚗
Because this attraction is quite popular, we went early in the morning and had no trouble enjoying the grottoes by ourselves. It was only when we were leaving that people started to arrive, proving that the early bird does indeed get the worm🤭.
⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️
The entire scenic area (North Xiangtang) is quite large, with three must-see spots: the grottoes, the museum, and the Chang Le Temple ruins, which took me a total of 4 hours. Other attractions such as the Tang Dynasty pagoda on the mountain top, the newly built Xiangtang Temple, the plaza park, and the children's playground are also worth a visit if you want to spend a whole day there.
📷📷📷📷
This article will only share about the grottoes. The natural lighting is quite dim, and the photos have a lot of noise, which is a concern for quality, but at least it has captured precious visual memories and an indescribable wonderful experience. If you ask me, I highly recommend it; it's so worth it.
Handan Xiangtangshan Grottoes
I have always wanted to visit the Xiangtangshan Grottoes, and I finally made the trip this week. Despite the uncooperative weather, I went anyway. In fact, I set out on Friday night, which gave me plenty of time. I didn't get to visit the Nuwa Palace or the ancient city of Guangfu.
I personally think Handan is quite nice. The city is clean, with good greenery, and the food is economical. Vegetarian buns cost one yuan each, and the street vendors' steamed dumplings are 10-15 yuan per steamer. The noodles are indeed quite salty, which is due to the addition of broad bean sauce; the local taste tends to be strong. There are many snacks available at Xuebu Bridge, with spicy hot pot being particularly popular, and the sesame sauce is good. We stayed opposite Congtai Park, and it was a very short walk to the park and Xuebu Bridge.
We set out for Xiangtangshan on Sunday morning. Perhaps due to the weather, there weren't many people, and the environment was very pleasant. I chatted with the staff who said that before, no one came and it was all dusty, but now it's much better. Due to the weather, it was very dark inside the grottoes, so I only took a few direct photos. It's better to see and experience it with your own eyes. The cultural and creative store offers free stamping; just bring your own notebook.
Nan Xiangtang is not far away, so I went there too. The damage inside is very severe, with only a few caves remaining. You can decide for yourself whether to visit.
Pathfinder Episode 16: Nanxiangtang Mountain Grottoes
Handan, Nanxiangtang Mountain Grottoes.
There are not many grottoes, a total of seven holes, most of the Buddha statues have no Buddha heads, some are also made up later.
The Nanxiangtang Mountain Grottoes flourished in the Northern Qi Dynasty, and it has a history of more than 1500 years. Most of the Buddha statues have been touched by later generations to become black and shiny. From the structure, only the seventh cave is a corridor surrounding the central Buddha statue column, and the rest are single rooms.
The grottoes are desolate!
Even if it is as hard as a stubborn stone, it can't withstand the butcher knife of time, let alone the hundred pounds of flesh of you and me?
Let go, let go...
Break away from it
The renowned Xiangtangshan Grottoes overseas
The Xiangtangshan Grottoes are the largest existing treasure trove of stone carving art from the Northern Qi Dynasty in China. It belongs to the third phase of the Northern Dynasty stone carving art. In terms of carving art, it inherits the skills of the Northern Wei and Eastern Wei Dynasties, and initiates the new trend of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, thus creating a grotto art with Chinese national style and era characteristics.
At that time, unknown Chinese artisans, based on mastering the traditional skills of their ancestors in painting, sculpture, architecture, etc., absorbed and integrated the techniques of Indian and Gandhara Buddhist sculpture art, and after the development of the first two phases, gradually blended into the traditional sculpture art of China. The form of the grottoes, the image of the statues, the face, the clothing, the patterns, etc., have basically completed the process of nationalization.
