In contrast, Lake Rotorua is shocking because the water smells terrible—really awful. At first, I thought it was farm waste, but it’s actually the sulfur smell from geothermal activity. It probably can’t be fixed anytime soon, so don’t go there; you’ll be overwhelmed by the stench. I hadn’t seen this mentioned in any previous guides. While rushing in Rotorua, a kind local lady driving by invited us into her car and took us to the bus station.

The first thing after clearing customs was heading to the rental company to pick up our car. After completing the paperwork and getting used to driving on the right side of the car (left side of the road), our North Island adventure officially started. On the first day, we decided not to linger in downtown Auckland. Instead, we drove directly to Hamilton for a pit stop. In the evening, we dropped by the local Pak'nSave supermarket to stock up on snacks, bottled water, and groceries for the next few days—an essential joy of any New Zealand road trip! Cave Voyage and Waterfall Hideaway: Glowworm Caves and Black Water Rafting Route: Hamilton ➔ Waitomo ➔ Sheep Shearing Statue (Mokau) ➔ New Plymouth Today's highlight is the famous Waitomo Caves! Stalactites and Black Water Rafting Experience: We joined a local cave tour and glided into the pitch-black underground river on a small boat. When the dense, galaxy-like glowing blue lights of the glowworms illuminated above our heads, we were completely mesmerized by the silent awe. For thrill-seekers, we highly recommend trying Black Water Rafting! Floating on black rubber tubes while wearing wetsuits is definitely an unforgettable adventure! Marokopa Falls & Mangapohue Natural Bridge: After the cave tour, we stopped by the nearby Marokopa Falls and the natural bridge walking track. The lush green forest air was incredibly fresh. After taking a short break for lunch in Te Kuiti, we continued south along State Highway 3. When passing through Mokau, don't forget to take a photo with the iconic "Sheep Shearing Statue" on the roadside. Towards the evening, we arrived at the West Coast's famous Three Sisters & Elephant Rock. Following the tide onto the beach, the giant boulders and sea caves standing by the ocean looked exceptionally weathered and spectacular under the sunset. Fuji of New Zealand," up close and personal. Forest Hiking Experience: We chose a trail suitable for a relaxed, scenic walk (around Wilkies Pools / Dawson Falls). Along the way, we walked through dense fern forests. The clear streams intertwined with the majestic snowy peaks in the distance, creating a stunning picture. Every casual snap looked like a postcard. Leaving the national park in the afternoon, we headed south to the historic town of Whanganui. Durie Hill Underground Elevator: There is a very unique attraction here—New Zealand's only underground elevator! First, you walk through a long underground tunnel, then take a vintage elevator up to the Durie Hill lookout, where you get a panoramic view of the entire Whanganui river valley and cityscape.
