So we picked a sunny weekend and drove about two hours from Shenyang to this mountain locals call “Waila Zi.” Tiannü Mountain is located in Taiping Village, Maquanzi Township, Fushun County. It’s a national 4A-level tourist attraction. The main peak is 780 meters high—not too tall, easy to climb, but the views are impressive. The mountain isn’t large; it takes 2–3 hours to hike the whole trail, with low physical demands, suitable for both elderly and children. The highlight of the park is nearly 100,000 wild Tiannü magnolias. This flower is a relic from the Quaternary glacial period, blooming from mid-June to early July, covering the mountain in white. Although we visited outside the bloom season, the lush greenery and fresh air were already very healing. The core area has a negative oxygen ion concentration of 30,000 per cubic centimeter, and you can see a sea of clouds more than 150 days a year. ⛰️ Best route (easy and photogenic) The park is small with no shuttle buses, so it’s all on foot. Yulong Creek is located at the top of Nanchangling Ridge in Qingyuan Manchu Autonomous County, Fushun. A creek runs through the entire scenic area, flowing in the shape of a giant dragon. The water is clear and emerald green, which is how it got its name. Covering more than 3,000 acres, the area is a national key ecological protection zone with lush vegetation and a very high concentration of negative oxygen ions, earning it the nickname “natural oxygen bar.” The biggest feature of the scenic area is that you don’t have to climb up and down. The entrance is at the mountaintop, and you walk downhill all the way. To go back up, you can take the flying magic carpet. Going down the mountain, you can ride the dry slide or drift along the creek. Both elderly and children can easily enjoy the whole route. 🌊 Highlights Nanda Hu waterfall is the soul of the scenic area. Clear mountain water rushes down from a height, roaring like thousands of horses charging. Mist rises around the waterfall, often creating rainbows that stretch across the canyon. So we picked a weekend, drove from Shenyang, took the Shenji Expressway for about 2 hours, and arrived at this green secret tucked in the Changbai Mountain foothills. Hemu National Forest Park is located in Yongling Town, Xinbin Manchu Autonomous County, Fushun City. It is a national AAAA-level scenic area. The park covers 1,367.85 hectares, stretches 7.5 km long, and its highest peak, Shihuadingzi, stands at 1,019.2 meters. It is the most botanically diverse garden in Northeast China and is known as a “natural oxygen bar.” ⛰️ Two routes, two experiences The park is divided into Line 1 (leisure and water activities) and Line 2 (mountain climbing challenge). Line 1 “winding path to tranquility”: stroll along the wooden boardwalk by the stream, fully shaded with minimal elevation gain. It’s perfect for kids to play in the water during summer, with many walnut trees along the way. Line 2 “crossing the natural barrier”: a true mountain climbing route, about 3,088 meters long with a total ascent of 558 meters. Just 1 hour from Shenyang, visit the largest Lei Feng-themed memorial hall in China — the Fushun Lei Feng Memorial Hall Before coming to Fushun, a friend told me there was a place “worth a special trip.” So I chose a sunny weekend, drove from Shenyang, and took less than an hour along the Shenji Expressway to reach No. 61 East Section of Leifeng Road in Wanghua District. From afar, you can see the spacious park covering 99,900 square meters. This is the earliest built and largest Lei Feng-themed memorial hall in the country. Construction began in 1964, it opened in 1965, and has undergone four renovations and expansions. Entering the park, the first thing you see is the Lei Feng monument. Made entirely of granite, the main structure is 13.4 meters tall. The lower part of the monument is inlaid with white marble reliefs. Walking further leads to the memorial area. Lei Feng’s tomb is built from gray-white granite, surrounded by ancient pines and cypresses. In front of the tomb plaza stands a 5-meter-tall full-body statue of Lei Feng. Many people offer flowers and bow here. The whole area is quiet and solemn. Next to the memorial area is the core building — the Lei Feng deeds exhibition hall. The building covers 7,800 square meters, with 4,100 square meters of exhibition space. The hall houses 2,245 items, including photos, artifacts, and documents. The exhibition hall has two floors. The first floor mainly features scene recreations — combined scenes like “Lei Feng bidding farewell to his mother at home” and “The dedicated bulldozer operator,” paired with high-tech dynamic displays. The second floor showcases the origins and development of nationwide Lei Feng learning activities. The most impressive exhibit is a bulldozer driven by Lei Feng — the Stalin model 80 heavy bulldozer, 2.4 meters tall and weighing 13 tons, the crown jewel of the memorial hall. Lei Feng operated this bulldozer at Ansteel in 1958. In 1995, Ansteel donated it to the memorial hall, and it now rests quietly in the exhibition hall. The hall also displays precious artifacts such as the Selected Works of Mao Zedong that Lei Feng read, his only recorded speech, original diary manuscripts, and his old military uniform. The park is divided into six functional areas: exhibition area, memorial area, monument garden, sculpture area, youth education activity area, and comprehensive service area. The monument garden features inscribed stone tablets; the sculpture area has a group of Lei Feng-themed sculptures. Touring the entire park takes about 2–3 hours for an in-depth visit. Practical information: The memorial hall is free to enter. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM), closed on Mondays. No reservation is needed; entry is by ID card. Free guided tours are available daily at 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. For self-driving, navigate to “Fushun Lei Feng Memorial Hall,” which has free parking. There is a Lei Feng-themed post office inside where you can get a commemorative stamp. By the time I left the memorial hall, it was nearly noon, and sunlight was shining on the granite monument. This large memorial built for an ordinary soldier stands quietly in a corner of Fushun city. If you come to Fushun, be sure to visit — stand for a moment in front of the monument, take your time walking through the exhibition hall, and carry that quiet strength in your heart.
