In terms of completeness and exquisite carving, it is extremely rare in China, and in no way inferior to the ancient architectural masterpieces I have seen in Shanxi. 👍 . The square shape with four pillars and four sides is neat and grand. It stands 12.2 meters tall and 4.15 meters wide. Standing beneath it, you instantly feel very small. Each top side is carved with the words “Imperial Edict,” exuding a strong sense of authority. The name Baizhang Temple originates from the Tang Dynasty monk Huaihai, who established the *Baizhang Rules of Purity* here. The saying, "No work, no food," is said to have originated from this place. I wasn't there seeking career advancement (though the rumors are indeed true), nor was I there to check off a particular spot. I simply wanted a quiet place to sit for a while after soaking in the hot springs and admiring the lake. The temple is small, nestled in a mountain valley. The incense burns slowly, and the monks sweep slowly as well. I sat for a long time on the stone steps outside the main hall, watching a sparrow hop on the roof tiles, the wind chimes under the eaves ringing crisply in the breeze. This reminded me of my mentor Nicola Clayton's concept of "Mental Time Travel"—memories aren't recorded on a film recorder; they are reconstructed each time we revisit them.
