The ancient town of Mudu, also known as Duchuan and Xujiang, and poetically named Xiangxi, is located in the western part of the ancient city of Suzhou, in the Taihu Lake basin. It is a famous scenic spot in the south of the Yangtze River, known as 'the foremost town in Wuzhong' and 'the most exquisite beauty in the south of the Yangtze River'. The ancient town of Mudu has a history of more than 2,500 years. In August 2008, it was designated as a national 4A-level tourist attraction and is also part of the Taihu Lake scenic area. Mudu is the hometown of traditional Chinese handicrafts. Historically, it has been home to masters such as the clay sculpture artist Yuan Yuchang, the silverware expert Zhu Bishan, the jade carving master Lu Zigang, and the embroidery saint Shen Shou, whose works are all national treasures.
