Lugu Lake is located at the junction of Yanyuan County in Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province, and Ninglang County in Yunnan Province. The Lugu Lake basin is situated in the Yongning Basin and is the third largest deep-water lake in China. It is shared by the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan, with Yunnan accounting for one-third of the total area. However, Yunnan has a longer lakeshore line than Sichuan. The lake covers an area of over 50 square kilometers, at an altitude of 2690 meters. The water is clear and azure blue, making it the highest lake in Yunnan and one of the deepest freshwater lakes in China. There is a small island in the lake. The area around Lugu Lake is mainly inhabited by the Mosuo, Yi, and Pumi peoples, with a total of 7 ethnic groups including the Mongols living along the coast, amounting to about 13,000 people. The beautiful natural environment and unique ethnic customs make this a famous tourist area. Within the Lugu Lake region, there are the Lijiang Lugu Lake Mosuo Cultural Tourism Area and the Liangshan Lugu Lake Tourism Scenic Area.
