The famous Kaiping Diaolou

After the movie 'The Race' became a hit, it brought fame to Jiangmen, Guangdong. When traveling to Jiangmen, one must visit the renowned Kaiping Diaolou, a 5A tourist attraction and one of the 50 must-visit places in a lifetime. Guangdong's first World Cultural Heritage site, it is a multi-story tower building that combines defense, residential living, and a blend of Chinese and Western architectural art. The Kaiping Diaolou were first built in the early Qing Dynasty, with a large number constructed in the 1920s and 1930s. These diaolous were built by overseas Chinese from Guangdong to defend against bandits, funded by overseas Chinese who sent money back to their hometowns. Their appearance is similar to that of a fortress and they also have some of the functions of a fortress, hence the name 'diaolou'. As a famous World Cultural Heritage site, there are currently over 1,800 diaolou remaining in Kaiping, among which Liyuan, Zilicun, Majianglong, and Jinjiangli have been designated as scenic areas. The Diaolou Cultural Tourism Area combines garden art, overseas Chinese culture, Chinese and Western architecture, cultural relics, the original ecological natural environment, and diverse local customs and practices.
