Tthe No.1 Well of Hangzhou faces east and is "concave" shaped in general layout .In the middle part of the patio, there are five well openings with a boundary tablet that reads"Ancient Big Well Boundary Wall" The Big Well was excavated by De Shao, the national teacher of Wu and Yue in Five Dynasties period. The original well was four Zhang (about 13 m) in circumference with no cover and was named "No.1 Spring in Wu Hill .During Shaoxing period in Southern Song Dynasty, as people frequently fell into the well and drowned, Grand Commandant Dong Dezhi covered the well with a big stone slate, leaving six openings. In the 7th year of Chunyou reign in Southern Song Dynasty, Hangzhou experienced a great drought and the well was the only one in the city that did not dry up. During Hongzhi period in Ming Dynasty, it was reduced to five openings. For over a thousand years, it remained undried and has nurtured and benefited the local people.
