The Mogao Caves of Dunhuang are a World Cultural Heritage site located in Dunhuang City, Gansu Province, China, renowned for their rich murals and sculptures. The excavation of the Mogao Caves began during the reign of Emperor Xuanzhao of the Former Qin, initiated by the monk Lezun who first carved out caves on the cliff face. Through continuous expansion and embellishment across various dynasties such as the Sixteen Kingdoms, Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Western Xia, and Yuan, the Mogao Caves gradually took on their present form.
