Ulsan travel guide and discussion

Calling all travelers who love exploring local supermarkets and warehouse clubs abroad! One of the best ways to get a real sense of local life while traveling in South Korea is by visiting "Costco Wholesale." This time, I headed to the Costco Ulsan branch. I’ll be sharing the unique rules, the local atmosphere, and the details on their incredibly popular food court menu! First things first: the most important thing to know when visiting a Costco in Korea is that photography and filming are strictly prohibited inside the store. In Japan and other countries, it’s common to snap photos of your haul or the displays, but in Korean branches, staff enforce this rule strictly for privacy and security reasons. Be careful with your phone! Even if you’re just holding your phone to "take a photo of a product as a memo" or "record the size of a souvenir," security or staff will quickly step in. My advice? Resist the urge to snap photos inside, take it all in with your own eyes, and focus on your shopping. However, photography is allowed outside! Since you can’t take photos inside, the massive and stylish warehouse exterior makes for a perfect photo op. The dynamic look of the classic American warehouse, the "COSTCO" sign against the blue sky, and the signs in Korean all add to that "I'm at an overseas Costco" feeling. Make sure to snap plenty of commemorative photos with the building as your backdrop! I couldn't take photos inside, but just walking through the aisles was full of discoveries and surprises. A totally different vibe from Japan! Korea's unique and overwhelming lineup: · Korea-exclusive jumbo-sized items: You’ll see massive boxes and bags of Kimchi, Korean seaweed, and traditional snacks piled high. · The Deli Section: Costco-sized versions of familiar Korean staples like Bulgogi, Yangnyeom Chicken, and Bossam are lined up, making you hungry just looking at them. · Local shopping scenes: Seeing local families doing their bulk shopping gives you a genuine sense of the Korean lifestyle and daily routine. While it shares some similarities with Costcos in Japan, there’s a distinct local atmosphere that lets you know, "Ah, I'm definitely in Korea." It's an exciting place for anyone who loves to shop. The best part of any Costco trip—or the perfect break during one—is the food court! The food court at Costco Korea features several "Korea-only menu items" that aren't available in Japan. Among them, I tried the fan-favorite: Tteokbokki! Authentic flavor and more volume than you’d expect The Tteokbokki I received was typical Costco size! The deep container was packed with thick, chewy rice cakes. · The Sauce: The bright red, rich gochujang-based sauce isn't just sweet; it packs a serious, authentic spicy kick that hits you afterward. This "merciless, authentic heat" is what makes it so delicious. · Added Ingredients: True to Korean style, it contains bite-sized pieces of Korean fish cakes (eomuk), adding a savory seafood depth to the sauce. · Very Satisfying: Every bite is a mix of chewy texture and spicy umami. It pairs perfectly with a cold drink or a slice of pizza. Being able to enjoy this authentic Korean soul food at such a reasonable price and in such a large portion makes the food court worth the trip alone. 💡 Travel Summary & Advice Costco Ulsan is a fantastic spot to experience "real" Korean daily life and the massive shopping culture, away from the typical tourist spots. · Reminders: Remember you'll need your membership card (it's valid globally) and keep the no-photography rule in mind. · How to enjoy: After taking your photos outside, explore the unique Korean products that differ from Japan, fill your cart, and finish off your trip with the incredible Tteokbokki at the food court. It's the ultimate plan. If you're looking for a deeper dive into Korean supermarkets or want to soak in the local food and atmosphere, definitely make a stop at Costco Ulsan! When people think of autumn in South Korea, they usually imagine golden ginkgo streets, fiery red maple forests and mountains covered in colorful leaves. But autumn in Ulsan offers something completely different: a sea of silvery pampas grass swaying in the coastal breeze. 🤍✨ Instead of chasing red leaves, imagine walking through endless waves of feathery grass, with the soft autumn sunlight turning every plume silver and gold. Add the ocean breeze, blue skies and peaceful walking trails, and suddenly autumn feels less like a colorful forest and more like a scene from a romantic Korean movie. 🎞️🌾 #fallcolors

🔸The K ✔️Location: 29-17, Doho 1-gil, Samnam-eup, Ulju-gun, Ulsan ✔️Check-in 17:00 Check-out 12:00 If you're looking for a great value stay in Ulsan, I highly recommend The K. It's located right in front of Ulsan Station, making it incredibly accessible for those traveling without a car. The rooms are quite spacious, and there's a business room and coffee machine available in the common area. The room condition is clean and neat, making it the perfect choice for anyone looking for an affordable place to stay during their Ulsan trip.

This was a nice change, it felt more local with families all around. Ulsan Grand Park felt less like a sightseeing stop and more like somewhere the city actually comes to spend its free time. There were people walking their dogs, cycling, jogging and families settling down for picnics, and the park is so large that even with plenty of people around it rarely felt crowded. I also underestimated the size at first. There are several walking routes, ponds, gardens and huge open spaces, so this isn't somewhere you necessarily cover in one quick loop. That's probably what I liked most about it. There isn't one famous viewpoint everyone is rushing towards. You can rent a bicycle, pick a walking route or simply find a quiet part of the park and stay there for a while. It gave me a much more everyday look at Ulsan than the city's better-known attractions, and sometimes those ordinary local places end up being the nicest discoveries. #localdiscoveries #thingstodo #korea #localguides #travel #localexperience

📍 Nine Hill Bakery Cafe 106 Deongeokcheonjeon-ro, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan 🕐 Weekdays 10:00–20:00 / Weekends 09:30–20:00 (Open year-round) Nestled at the foot of the Yeongnam Alps, this spacious bakery cafe offers breathtaking views. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, you can admire the changing mountain scenery throughout the seasons. In spring, vibrant green barley fields surround the cafe, while cosmos flowers take over in the fall, making every corner a perfect photo spot. The high ceilings create a bright, airy atmosphere that feels incredibly refreshing! Their signatures include artisanal bread baked fresh daily and specialty coffee. The Black Sesame Vienna is a must-try. Parking is available, but it can get busy on weekends, so arriving early is a good idea. Expect to spend around ₩10,000+ per person for coffee and a treat. It’s also near Ganwoljae and Paraeso Falls, making it the perfect stop for a Yeongnam Alps day trip.

Ulsan is a coastal gem with far more to offer than meets the eye. 💙 Stroll along the shore and soak in the breeze at Daewangam Park and Ilsan Beach, then head to Jangsaengpo Whale Culture Village to discover a unique side of the city's heritage. Another must-see is the Taehwagang National Garden, featuring a stunning riverside bamboo forest perfect for a relaxing walk. 🌿 Ulsan perfectly balances seaside views, trendy cafes, and lush natural spaces. It’s laid-back, uncrowded, and captures the authentic charm of one of Korea’s hidden gems. ✨

If you’re planning a trip to Busan, good news: getting around is very easy, and you can use one rechargeable transit card for almost everything. I always recommend getting a T-money, EZL, or local transit card first, because it works on most of the transport you’ll actually use in the city. Here’s a simple breakdown of the main options: 1. Metro The fastest and easiest choice for many travelers. It’s great for places like Seomyeon, Nampo, Busan Station, and Haeundae. If you want a stress-free way to cross the city, start with the metro. 2. BGL Light Rail This is the most useful option if you’re coming from Gimhae Airport. It connects the airport area and makes it easy to continue your trip by changing to the metro. 3. Donghae Line A good choice for coastal and regional trips, especially if you want to visit places around Haeundae, Songjeong, Gijang, or go farther toward the Ulsan side. 4. City Buses Buses are perfect for neighborhoods the metro doesn’t reach so well. They’re very useful for beaches, hills, and local areas. Just remember: tap when you get on and tap again when you get off. 5. Taxi Best for door-to-door trips, late nights, or when you have luggage. Many taxis accept transit cards if a card reader is installed, but there is no transfer discount from taxi. Helpful tip: Buy and top up your card at convenience stores or metro stations. If you change between city bus and rail, transfer benefits usually apply when you use the same card and change within a short time window. For me, the best combo in Busan is usually metro + bus: metro for the long distance, bus for the last part of the trip.

If you're planning a trip to Ulsan, I highly recommend the Samsan-dong itinerary. I started my morning off right with a hearty, steaming bowl of soup at Jeonju Igane Bean Sprout Soup, which opens nice and early. The clean, flavorful broth, generous portions, and wallet-friendly prices made it the absolute perfect first meal of the trip. After eating, I swung by the Aladdin Used Bookstore to browse some titles I've been meaning to read and ended up buying a few that caught my eye. It was a blast looking around since they have books from all sorts of genres at really reasonable prices. Right next door at Paul Bassett, I grabbed a fragrant cup of coffee and enjoyed some downtime, adding a nice relaxing pause to my travels. The layout of this route is incredibly convenient, letting you enjoy a great meal, some reading, and coffee all in one go, and I highly recommend it as a fulfilling Ulsan travel itinerary even if you're short on time. Ulsan Grand Park at night offers a completely different charm than it does during the day. Taking a leisurely stroll along the gently illuminated trails was the perfect way to spend some relaxing time, and after washing my feet thoroughly at the foot-washing station, walking along the red clay barefoot path made it feel as though all the day's fatigue simply melted away. Feeling the soft texture of the red clay beneath my feet was a truly special, healing experience that relaxed both my body and mind. After the walk, I headed over to the night food stalls to soak in the lively atmosphere. It was a great spot to enjoy a cool summer evening with a variety of delicious treats, and the bamboo gelato, in particular, was an absolute must-try dessert. Sweet, creamy, and incredibly refreshing, it was the ideal treat to enjoy after a walk. With its beautifully lit grounds, bustling night food stalls, and barefoot walking paths all in one place, Ulsan Grand Park is a fantastic destination whether you're visiting with family, a significant other, or friends.

#underratedspots If you think breathtaking mountain views require hours of difficult hiking, Ganwoljae in the Yeongnam Alps will change your mind. Located between Ulsan and Yangsan, Ganwoljae is famous for its endless fields of silver grass, rolling mountain ridges, and panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see. It’s one of Korea’s most spectacular hiking destinations, especially in autumn. 🌿 A Hike Worth Every Step One of the most popular routes is beginner-friendly, taking around 2–3 hours round trip on a well-maintained trail. As you climb higher, the forest gradually opens up to reveal an endless sea of silver grass swaying in the wind—a view that feels straight out of a movie. 🍂 Autumn Is Pure Magic From late September to late October, the entire mountain pass turns golden as millions of silver grass plumes catch the afternoon light. Combined with crisp mountain air and vibrant fall foliage, it’s easy to see why many Koreans consider this one of the country’s most beautiful autumn hikes. 📸 Views You’ll Never Forget At the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Yeongnam Alps, peaceful ridgelines, and wide-open skies. Whether you’re watching the sunrise, photographing the silver grass, or simply sitting quietly with the mountain breeze, Ganwoljae is the kind of place that stays with you long after the hike is over. ✨ Why Visit Ganwoljae? Because not every unforgettable hike has to be difficult. Ganwoljae offers one of Korea’s most iconic mountain landscapes while remaining accessible to casual hikers, making it the perfect adventure for anyone who loves nature. 📍 Ganwoljae, Yeongnam Alps, Ulsan, South Korea 🥾 Beginner-friendly trekking • 🌾 Silver grass fields • 🍂 Best in autumn • 📸 Panoramic mountain views #Ganwoljae #YeongnamAlps #SouthKorea #HikingKorea #AutumnInKorea #VisitKorea #NatureLovers #HiddenKorea #TripMoments #ExploreKorea 🥾🌾🏔️

If anyone asks me where else in Korea, aside from Seoul and Busan, is worth a day trip to get close to nature? My answer will always be—Ganwolsan. Located at the border of Ulsan and Gyeongsangnam-do, Ganwolsan is part of the Yeongnam Alps, standing at an elevation of about 1,083 meters. Every autumn, the entire mountain is blanketed in golden silver grass that ripples like waves in the breeze, earning it the beautiful nickname of the **"Korean Alps."** Standing at the summit and taking in the endless mountain ranges and grasslands, you'll honestly forget you're still in Korea. ⸻ 🌾 The Autumn-Exclusive Silver Grassland, Beautiful as a Painting Ganwolsan's most enchanting season falls between late September and early November every year. The entire mountain is covered in lush silver grass that glows golden in the sunlight and shifts to a warm orange at sunset. When the breeze hits, the whole field sways gently like ocean waves. As you slowly make your way up the trail toward the summit, there's no need to rush or constantly check your GPS. Just soak in the scenery in front of you, and you'll experience nature's purest charm. It's no wonder so many Koreans make a special trip here to hike every autumn. ⸻ 📸 Must-Take Instagrammable Spots When visiting Ganwolsan, I highly recommend capturing these specific shots: 📍 The wooden boardwalk at the summit alongside the vast silver grass fields 📍 The breathtaking view of the ridge trail stretching into the distance 📍 The summit marker stone 📍 The golden hour light spilling over the entire hillside Every angle you capture gives you the illusion of standing in a European alpine meadow. ⸻ 🥾 Moderate Hiking Difficulty, Perfect for Beginners There are multiple hiking routes up Ganwolsan. The most popular one starts from the cable car station or the trailhead, leading you along well-maintained wooden boardwalks and paths to the summit. Although some sections require a continuous uphill climb, the overall difficulty is moderate. As long as you're wearing comfortable sneakers, most travelers can easily tackle it. I recommend setting aside half a day to slowly appreciate the views along the way, rather than rushing to bag the peak. ⸻ ☕ Unwind at a Cafe After Your Descent After finishing the hike, my top recommendation isn't to head straight back to the hotel. Instead, find a cafe near the foothills and fully embrace the slow-paced travel life. The area around Ganwolsan is packed with cafes featuring massive floor-to-ceiling windows. Many of these spots face the mountains or countryside. Sitting by the window, gazing at the mountain range you just conquered while enjoying a coffee and dessert, your fatigue will instantly melt away. This is also a huge travel trend in Korea right now— Morning hike, afternoon cafe. No need to rush through an itinerary. Just sitting quietly and daydreaming while staring out the window is pure bliss. ⸻ 🚗 Transportation Tips Driving from Busan takes about 1.5 hours and is the most convenient way to get there. If you're taking public transit, you can head to Ulsan first, then transfer to a bus or taxi to the trailhead. It takes a bit longer, but it's still totally doable for a day trip. If you have extra time, you can pair this with other peaks in the Yeongnam Alps to fully experience the majestic mountain scenery of southeastern Korea in one go. ⸻ 📌 Quick Travel Tips ✅ Autumn is peak season, so try to visit on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds. ✅ Temperatures up in the mountains drop lower than in the city, so remember to pack a light jacket. ✅ Shoes with good grip, like sturdy sneakers or hiking boots, are highly recommended. ✅ The wind can get pretty strong at the top, so bundle up when taking photos. ✅ After your hike, checking out a scenic cafe is the coziest way to wrap up your trip. ⸻ ❤️ Why is Ganwolsan Worth Visiting? A lot of people who visit Korea spend all their time city-hopping. But Ganwolsan showed me that Korea's charm goes way beyond its food, shopping, and cafe culture—it also boasts some absolutely jaw-dropping natural landscapes. From overlooking the rolling mountain ranges at the summit to sitting in a cafe all afternoon watching the sky slowly change colors—this day didn't have a packed itinerary, yet it left me with the most unforgettable memories. If you want to experience a completely different side of Korea, take a trip to Ganwolsan. I promise that when the autumn breeze rolls in and the vast fields of silver grass sway in the wind, you'll understand exactly why they call it the "Korean Alps." ⸻

Exploring Ulsan’s riverfront gems was the highlight of my South Korea adventure! 🤩🌊 If you crave tranquil vibes and easy city access, Taehwaru Pavilion is a must-see. 🌉 Dare to cross the Daewangam Suspension Bridge? This epic bridge swings high above coastal cliffs, offering jaw-dropping sea views and a rush of adrenaline for thrill seekers in Ulsan! ♥️Start your adventure at Daewangam Park (95 Deungdae-ro, Dong-gu, Ulsan), where scenic trails wind through pine forests. Make your way towards the legendary suspension bridge (대왕암 출렁다리). Walking across on a sunny day, you'll catch the shimmering sea below and have perfect lighting for photos! Don’t miss the insta-worthy close-up shots of the bridge with green trees framing the walkway, and snag a dramatic angle midway with the sea and blue skies as your backdrop. 🔥Must-do: Take a slow stroll across the bridge—even if it feels a bit scary! It’s sturdy but does bounce a bit, so hold on and enjoy the sensation. Loop around the park to hit Daewangam Rock and the lighthouse for more highlight views. 🎈Tips: The bridge is great, but if heights make you uneasy, pace yourself and stick close to the rails. Early morning or late afternoon light is gorgeous and the crowds are thinner. Wear sneakers—those metal grates can get slippery! Since Daewangam is open year-round, check weather forecasts for clear skies before you go. 💥Precautions: If windy, the bridge can sway noticeably (it definitely made my heart jump), so avoid crossing during rough weather. Families with children should keep little ones supervised. #Ulsan #DaewangamPark #SuspensionBridge #OutdoorAdventure #CoastalViews #stacy_travelling #ulsantrip #ulsangrandpark

Did you know there's a bridge in Ulsan famous for its gorgeous purple wisteria? It's Monet's Bridge, where beautiful purple blooms drape gracefully over the calm water! What makes this spot truly special right now is the blooming wisteria. Walking across the bridge feels just like passing through a flowing purple curtain! Every time a gentle breeze blows, the flowers sway, creating an atmosphere that is... quite literally, pure healing! Every photo you take here turns out incredibly aesthetic, and on a sunny day, the reflection of the wisteria on the water adds an even more dreamy vibe. Jangsaengpo Whale Culture Village, highly recommended for your Ulsan Nam-gu travel itinerary, is an interactive village located within the Whale Culture Special Zone. I initially thought it would be quite small since it's an interactive village, but it's actually quite expansive. You'll need to set aside a good hour and a half or more to explore the entire area. ❗️ Parking You can enjoy free parking at either the Whale Museum Annex Parking Lot or the Whale Culture Special Zone Parking Lot. If you're planning to take the monorail to the Whale Culture Village, I highly recommend parking at the Whale Culture Special Zone Parking Lot. ❗️ Admission Fee / Operating Hours · Individuals - 3,000 KRW · Groups - 2,400 KRW · Ticket Office Hours - 09:00~17:30 · Operating Hours - 09:00~18:00 ❗️ Whale Culture Village This interactive village perfectly recreates the atmosphere of the 1970s and 80s, and it's so beautifully designed that even those who didn't live through that era can fully immerse themselves in its nostalgic vibe. Staying true to the village concept, there's even a local police station inside! You'll find various spots like a Chinese restaurant, a supermarket, a barbershop, and a retro elementary school, all incredibly well put together. At the police station, there's a fun photo zone where you can step behind bars to snap some pictures. Befitting its name, the Whale Culture Village also offers educational experience classes. You can also see lifelike sculptures depicting the whaling industry of that era. On top of that, there are many engaging spaces where you can learn all about whales in detail, so I highly recommend taking a thorough look around. ❗️ Eateries Don't worry about getting hungry! There are plenty of food stalls to satisfy your cravings, including a bakery, the Whale Noodle Shop, and various snack bars.

A popular destination for family trips in Ulsan, Jangsaengpo Whale Museum is more than just a simple exhibition hall— it's closer to a space where you can truly experience the "Ulsan Whale Story." As you head inside, whale models and ecological exhibits line up, and it's actually much bigger than you'd expect. There are plenty of interactive elements that kids will especially love, making it a great place for a casual visit. With whale-related videos and a look into the history of Jangsaengpo, Ulsan, time surprisingly flies by here. To be completely honest, rather than a flashy aquarium vibe, it's "a space uniquely themed around Ulsan." 📍 Whale Ecology Experience Hall, Ulsan, Korea A place to learn and feel the story of whales. A must-visit spot whenever I travel to Ulsan, Daewangam Park isn't just your average park, but a place where you can truly take in the stunning scenery of the East Sea. As you stroll along the pine forest trail, the path leads right out to the ocean, and the panoramic view opens up more refreshingly with every step. The section where the rugged rocks overlap, in particular, gives you that quintessential East Sea vibe. If you visit on a day with rough waves, the ocean spray crashes high into the air, making the landscape feel that much more dramatic. A lot of people time their visits for the sunrise, and the atmosphere when the sun peaks over the horizon is truly awe-inspiring. To be completely honest, this is one of those spots where you have to walk it yourself to truly feel its charm, rather than just looking at photos. 📍 Daewangam Park, Ulsan, Korea Where the ocean meets the rocks in the most dramatic way.
