Since moving to San Francisco, I've realized the coast here is much more diverse than I imagined. It's not a "visit one beach and you've seen it all" kind of situation 😂 Some spots offer views of the Golden Gate Bridge, others feature endless sandy beaches, some require hiking through forests and along cliffs, and some are just perfect for: Driving over → Finding a coffee shop → Enjoying the sea breeze → Waiting for a sunset 🌄 So, I've put together a list of 9 coastal destinations around San Francisco. 🚗 Drive times are rough estimates from near Union Square during off-peak hours. Most of the first 8 are within about an hour; Point Reyes is further, so I recommend setting aside a full day for it. · -- 01|Lands End 🌳 One of my favorite stretches of coastline. Walk through the forest to the edge of the cliffs. You'll see the Pacific along the way, and on clear days, you can even spot the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. There isn't just one viewpoint here; as you walk along the trail, the coastline constantly changes. 🌊 Best for: Forests + cliffs + distant views of the Golden Gate Bridge · -- 02|Baker Beach 🌁 If you're visiting San Francisco for the first time and want to snap that classic "Golden Gate Bridge + beach" photo, you can't go wrong here. Sunny days offer a crisp, clear view, while foggy days show a completely different side of San Francisco. Sometimes only part of the bridge is visible, which actually adds a special atmosphere. 📸 Best for: Golden Gate Bridge + beach photos · -- 03|Ocean Beach 🏖️ A long, expansive stretch of beach. There's no complicated route here— just pick a nice time to visit and take a slow walk along the shore. It's usually quite windy, and foggy days are common. If you don't want to plan a specific hike, I highly recommend this spot: ☕ Grab a coffee 🌊 Enjoy the breeze 🚶 Take a walk along the shore It's just a very relaxing San Francisco afternoon. · -- 04|Fort Funston 🌊 The vibe here is a bit different from a typical beach. You're mostly standing up high, · ooking down at the entire Pacific Ocean from the cliffs. When the weather is right, you can even see paragliders flying over the coastline. If you love "ocean + cliffs," this is the place for you. · -- 05|Pacifica State Beach 🏄 If you want to see the ocean without the hassle of hiking, Pacifica is a great choice. You don't have to walk far after parking to reach the shore. It's also a convenient spot to watch surfers. 🌊 It's all about: Park → get out → see the ocean No fuss, perfect for a half-day trip. · -- 06|Mori Point 🪴 If you enjoy light hiking, add this to your list. In the spring, the combination of grassy slopes, wildflowers, and the coastline makes for beautiful colors. Walking along while looking out at the Pacific offers a bit more of an "exploratory" feel than just sitting on a beach. 🌿 Best for: Spring wildflowers + light hiking + cliffside ocean views · -- 07|Rodeo Beach ⛰️ Located north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The vibe here is a bit more rugged than the coast near downtown San Francisco. With beaches, rocky reefs, lagoons, and hillsides all side by side, the scenery is incredibly diverse. If you've already visited Baker Beach and Ocean Beach and want a different coastal style, come here. · -- 08|Half Moon Bay 🌄 If I had to choose a place for a "slow afternoon," I'd think of Half Moon Bay. No need to pack your itinerary; just find a coffee shop to sit in, take a walk along the coast, and wait for the sunset. The whole pace just slows down. ☕ Best for: Coffee + coastal trails + sunset · -- 09|Point Reyes 🍃 Don't treat this as just a "quick stop to see the ocean." I recommend setting aside a full day. The coastline here is more expansive, with grasslands, lighthouses, cliffs, and long beaches... the drive itself is part of the journey. If you love raw, vast coastal scenery, Point Reyes is definitely worth the trip. 🌊 Best for: Natural scenery + lighthouses + long stretches of coastline · -- 🗺️ Not sure which one to pick? Check this out 🌁 Want to see the Golden Gate Bridge → Baker Beach + Lands End 🚶‍♀️ Don't want to hike → Ocean Beach + Pacifica State Beach ⛰️ Love cliffs + ocean → Fort Funston + Mori Point 🌅 Mainly want to see the sunset → Half Moon Bay 🍃 Want to see a more rugged coast → Point Reyes · -- The ocean in San Francisco has a unique quality: It's often foggy, often windy, and the water is colder than you'd expect. 😂 But precisely because the weather changes so quickly, visiting the same spot at different times can feel like a completely different experience. So, there's really no need to try and check off all 9 spots at once. Pick a beach you like, set aside half a day or even a full day, enjoy the breeze, take a walk, grab a coffee, and wait for the sun to slowly set. That's probably my favorite way to experience the coast in San Francisco. 🌊

Everyone knows that California State Route 1 is beautiful, mostly referring to the stretch from Monterey to Los Angeles. However, there is also a large and beautiful section of Route 1 in the Bay Area worth exploring. Today, we introduce the Bay Area segment travel guide for California State Route 1. 🌟 The Bay Area segment runs from San Francisco all the way to Santa Cruz, passing through places like Pacifica and Half Moon Bay. This guide follows the route from north to south in that order. It’s great to visit all year round, and even winter is quite comfortable. First, Route 1 passes through the Presidio of San Francisco and Golden Gate Park. These two parks include the Golden Gate Bridge, many museums, and gardens, all worth seeing. Then you enter the coastal section: starting with Pacifica Mussel Rock Park – a seaside spot with parking available Pacifica Municipal Pier – a pier where you can see wild sea lions Rockaway Beach Pacifica State Beach – a nice environment Half Moon Bay: Mavericks Beach – a great spot for surfing and beachcombing Venice Beach – many nearby dining options Pescadero Rockside – besides the beach and coast, there’s also a small town Año Nuevo State Park – special and interesting elephant seal viewing in winter, reservation required Pigeon Point Light Station – a beautiful cape lighthouse, a familiar place to revisit, with possible whale sightings; I saw sea lions here Greyhound Rock Vista Point Shark Fin Cove – a must-visit iconic spot, with shark fin-shaped rocks standing in the water, very spectacular Natural Bridges State Park – monarch boardwalk with monarch butterflies, natural sea arches Santa Cruz West Cliff Drive – entering Santa Cruz, a fantastic coastal road perfect for walking, ocean viewing, and watching sunsets, very chill Capitola Wharf – a charming artsy town worth visiting, colorful houses are beautiful, many small shops, also offers sea, beach, and pier views San Francisco · California

California is a place for sunsets. The Pacific coast offers countless beautiful spots to watch the sun set, and More Point is one of them. From the parking lot (drive), it's a 15-minute walk, then a short climb. There's a bench at the top to rest, and the area is generally well-maintained.

Just 15 minutes south of San Francisco, you can reach the coastal town of Pacifica. It is a quiet town with magnificent cliffs, beaches and rolling hills along a 6-mile coastline. There are not many tourists here, but the coastline is no less beautiful than any beach in the San Francisco Bay Area! Pacifica is a beautiful coastal town in San Mateo County, California, about 15 minutes' drive from San Francisco. It stretches along a 6-mile coastline with magnificent cliffs, beaches and rolling hills. In recent years, many whale watchers often gather at the pier and trails, exchanging information about the appearance of whales through social networking sites. You can see whales spraying water and even jumping out of the water on the shore, which is really a special experience. How about getting your binoculars ready? A man and wife played the part of the original owners in costume and told the history beautifully with the help of other staff members who were all very kind, enthusiastic and passionate about the history of the castle and the families that owned it as well as the city of Pacifica itself. My wife and I recommend it highly.

One of my favorite beaches in the Bay Area. Great hiking trails. Beautiful scenery. Parking is a little difficult here, best to get there before 10am. Stroll along the beach and enjoy the calming sounds of the Pacific Ocean. Highway 92, which most tourists from the Peninsula area use, can get crowded and bad at times, but early morning is always the best option to hit the road.
