Jingyuetan is better in the morning. Rent a bike and ride around the lake. The forest is 2–3 degrees cooler than the city. For lunch, find a small restaurant near the park entrance. The wind is strong but not dry. From the enemy towers, you can see the mountains rolling like waves. 🍜 In Chengde city, find a place serving buckwheat noodles with stewed beef shank. It’s refreshing. Don’t rush to leave at night. Walk along Wulie River. The cool breeze is much nicer than your hotel room. 5️⃣ Ningde | Fujian Many know Xiapu as a photography paradise, but in August, Ningde’s real value is its coolness and lack of crowds. Taimu Mountain is granite terrain with strong winds and many trees. Climbing it makes you forget it’s 35 degrees below. 🚄 Get off at Ningde station, then take a bus to Taimu Mountain, about an hour. ⚠️ The “One Line Sky” on the mountain is very narrow. If you’re a bit heavy or carrying a big bag, be cautious. I saw a guy stuck for three minutes and had to turn sideways to get past. Baishuijiang is better for families and water lovers. It offers a nice mix of renovated and wild sections, great scenic views, and a hiking experience that is both challenging and completely safe even for non hikers. Special tip: While it is possible to do this trip on your own, it is best to book yourself a trip package in order to avoid the transport hustle.

When the plaque reading "The Great Wall stretches thousands of miles, Jinshan stands out alone" came into view, I knew I had come to the right place! 📍 Basic Information: A peaceful and complete section of the Great Wall · What it is: A prime section of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, built under the supervision of the famous general Qi Jiguang, known for its "wide views, dense watchtowers, and exquisite architecture." · Core advantages: Fewer people, beautiful scenery, and a strong sense of authenticity. Compared to other popular sections, this area is less developed, allowing you to truly calm down and feel the breath of history and the grandeur of the mountains and rivers. · Location and transportation: Located in Luanping County, Chengde City, Hebei Province, adjacent to Miyun District, Beijing. About a 2-hour drive from downtown Beijing, making it a perfect weekend getaway destination. 🗺️ Four selected routes (from leisurely to hardcore, choose as you like) Don’t worry about not knowing where to go—I’ve personally tested and organized four clear routes for you to "copy" based on your stamina. 1️⃣ Classic Experience Route (about 2 hours) · Route: Scenic area middle gate → trail to Zhuanduo Pass (climb the Great Wall) → hike the Great Wall to Shaling Pass → trail back to middle gate. · Suitable for: Visitors with limited time who just want to easily experience the Great Wall’s charm. The Xiaojinshan Tower area is a golden spot for photos, and the cable car descent is easy while offering a high-altitude perspective of the Great Wall. 3️⃣ Deep Three Wonders Route (about 4 hours) · Route: Scenic area middle gate → trail to Zhuanduo Pass → hike toward Dongwuyan Tower (this section features the "Three Wonders of the Great Wall": parapet walls, inscribed bricks, and qilin spirit screens) → trail to scenic area east gate → shuttle bus back to middle gate. · Suitable for: Moderate stamina travelers who want to see more highlights and unique architecture in depth. 4️⃣ Hardcore Fitness Route (about 4 hours) · Route: Scenic area west gate → mountain trail to Taochun Pass (climb the Great Wall) → reverse hike the Great Wall to Zhuanduo Pass → trail down to middle gate → shuttle bus back to west gate. · Suitable for: Hiking lovers and "hardcore" challengers. This route has a longer uphill section and offers a more intense climbing experience. My choice: I took a "custom" route, hiking from the middle gate to Zhuanduo Pass, passing Shaling Pass, Xiaojinshan Tower, and Houchuankou, taking 4.5 hours on foot. Though tiring, when I saw the sea of clouds rolling between the mountains through a watchtower window, it was all worth it! There are many entrances and exits along the Great Wall here, so you can freely combine routes. 💡 Tips to make your Great Wall trip perfect 1. Best season: Autumn (late September to late October) is the golden time. The forests are colorful, and the climate is most comfortable. I visited in early September when autumn was just beginning, and it was already stunning. 2. Wearing the right shoes is crucial: The Great Wall’s surface is made of ancient bricks and steep steps, so wear non-slip, supportive hiking or sports shoes. Comfort directly affects your experience. 3. Photography gear advice: Wide-angle phone shots capture the grand scenes well. But if you want to capture the texture and depth of history, I strongly recommend bringing a telephoto lens. Every watchtower window is a natural frame. 4. Travel light and bring enough supplies: Carry enough water and some high-energy snacks. There are few vending points on the Wall, and they are far apart. Sunscreen, a hat, and a windbreaker (it’s windy on the mountain) are also essential. 5. Transportation and timing: Just navigate to "Jinshanling Great Wall" by car. It’s best to start early in the morning when the light is good and the crowds are minimal, so you can enjoy the most peaceful time. Returning in the afternoon helps avoid traffic jams.
