You guys, you won't believe this! Hidden deep in the mountains of Shangri-La is a real-life fairyland—Baishuitai (White Water Terraces)! Layers of milky-white calcium carbonate terraces cascade down, with clear springs flowing over them, shimmering with a Tiffany blue glow. No filters needed; photos straight from your phone look like wallpapers😭 🌊 "Terraces of the Immortals" carved over millions of years Baishuitai is located in Baidi Village, Sanba Township, Shangri-La City. It sits in the heart of the "Three Parallel Rivers" World Natural Heritage site and has rested at the foot of Haba Snow Mountain for over 300,000 years! Spring water containing calcium bicarbonate flows down, decomposing into calcium carbonate and gradually depositing over time to form terraces that look like jade ridges and silver mounds. In the Naxi language, it is called "Ba Bu Zhi," meaning "gradually growing lotus." On the white terrace covering about 3 square kilometers, milky-white pools are layered like jade-carved terraces. The spring water gathers between the layers into blue pools that look like mirrors, shimmering with gradients of milky white, light blue, and emerald green under the sunlight. The murmuring spring water flows like sapphires, painting a picture with the distant mountains, blue sky, and white clouds, just like a palette carefully laid out by nature. 📿 The birthplace of Dongba culture, and more than just scenery Since ancient times, there has been a saying about Baishuitai: "If you haven't made a pilgrimage to Baidi, you aren't a true Dongba." This is the birthplace of the Naxi Dongba culture. In "Baidi Village" at the foot of the mountain, you can find the Dongba Temple and elder Dongba (Naxi priests), where you can learn about intangible cultural heritage like Dongba script and Dongba paper making. Every year on the eighth day of the second lunar month, there is a grand "Pilgrimage to Baishuitai" Dongba cultural tourism event, where the head Dongba leads blessing ceremonies, chants scriptures, and performs Dongba dances. Visitors can even try their hand at making Dongba paper. Natural wonders + millennial culture = maximum vibes! 📸 Perfect photo spots for stunning shots ✔️ Summit panoramic viewing platform: Overlook the entire blue and white calcium terrace, with layered curves like a palette dropped from the sky ✔️ Lower-level shallow calcium pools: In the morning, the pool water is like a mirror, clearly reflecting the blue sky, white clouds, and prayer flags ✔️ Wooden boardwalk portrait spot: Stand against the light wearing a red or white long dress, with the milky-white terraces and azure pools in the background ✔️ Fairy Bathing Pool: The circular pool has crystal-clear water, and the calcium textures at the bottom are picturesque ✔️ Drone aerial photography: See the layers of jade steps from a bird's-eye view; it's so stunning it gives you goosebumps ⏰ Best time for photos: 9:00–11:00 AM or 3:00–5:00 PM. The light is soft and not harsh, and the pool colors are most vibrant. It's super beautiful on sunny days—no filters needed at all 🚗 How to get there? 📍 Address: Baidi Village, Sanba Township, Shangri-La City, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province 🎫 Admission: 30 yuan/person (15 yuan for students, free for those 65 and older)—incredible value! ⏰ Opening hours: April–October, 8:00 AM–6:00 PM 🚗 Driving/chartering a car is the most convenient. It takes about 2–2.5 hours from downtown Shangri-La, and the scenery of snow-capped mountains and canyons along the way is stunning. We highly recommend chartering a car (about 600–700 yuan round trip), which allows you to combine it with a visit to Tiger Leaping Gorge. You can also take a bus from the Shangri-La Passenger Station to Sanba Township (departs at 9:00 AM, ticket price about 35 yuan) and then transfer to a local minibus to the scenic area. 💡 Travel tips: · Duration: We recommend setting aside 2–3 hours to explore and take photos at a leisurely pace · Please do not step into the calcium pools! The landscape is very fragile, so please be a responsible visitor · The entire route is a gentle wooden boardwalk. It takes about 30–40 minutes to walk from the entrance to the summit, so there is no need to ride a horse (we do not recommend the horse-riding services offered at the entrance!) · The altitude is only 2,380 meters, so there is basically no risk of altitude sickness · The UV rays are very strong, so a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential · There are no convenience stores in the scenic area, so bring your own water and snacks Baishuitai is really beginner-friendly! Huanglong is at an altitude of 3,800 meters and can easily cause altitude sickness, while this place is only over 2,300 meters. There aren't many tourists, it's quiet and healing, and it's a hidden gem worth making a special trip for. What you see with your own eyes is 100 times more stunning than the photos! You have to visit Shangri-La at least once, not just for Songzanlin Monastery and Pudacuo, but for this blue and white fairyland hidden deep in the mountains.

Along the way following the river, we saw many landscapes and rivers, but before I even reached the viewing platform of the First Bend of the Nu River, I noticed a long line of cars parked along the roadside. At first, I thought it was due to traffic control, but when I realized it was a viewing platform, I had already missed this perfect spot. Because the parking area was full, many cars parked along the roadside just to catch a glimpse of the First Bend of the Nu River. The viewing platform is right next to a tunnel. If you are heading into Bingzhongluo, you can directly enter the viewing platform from the right side of the road. If you don’t plan to stop, just drive through the tunnel towards Bingzhongluo. The First Bend of the Nu River is located near Ridan Village, Bingzhongluo Township, Gongshan County, Yunnan Province, and is a landmark scenic spot of the Nujiang Grand Canyon. This area features a narrow high mountain canyon landscape. The Nu River basin terrain slopes from north to south, with mountain ranges such as the Dandanglika Mountain, Dulong River, Gaoligong Mountains, Nu River, Biluo Snow Mountain, Lancang River, and Yunling Mountains distributed sequentially from north to south. The highest point in the area is the main peak of Gaoligong Mountain, Gawagapu, with an elevation of 5,128 meters, while the lowest point is the Nu River valley at about 738 meters above sea level. The climate here is temperate continental, with variations depending on altitude. When I arrived at the viewing platform, the spectacular scene before my eyes shocked me. The "First Bend of the Nu River" I had only seen on screens before was now vividly displayed in front of me. This feeling truly requires you to be there in person to experience the grandeur and magnificence of nature.

The road to Bingzhongluo is only one, following the Nujiang River straight north. From Kunming to Dali and then to Liuku, the capital of Nujiang Prefecture, the road is still relatively normal. But from Liuku towards Bingzhongluo, the road starts to narrow, with cliffs on the left and the Nujiang River on the right, many sections allowing only one-way traffic. The further north you go, the deeper the canyon becomes, the greener the river water, and the fewer villages along the road. After driving for a full ten hours, I thought several times about turning back, but every time I saw the unreal emerald color of the Nujiang outside the window, I felt it was worth going further no matter how far. Bingzhongluo is a small town with a population of less than 10,000 located in the deepest part of the Nujiang Grand Canyon. It is known as "the place where humans and gods coexist." This is not a tourism slogan; here, Christianity, Catholicism, Tibetan Buddhism, and indigenous religions have peacefully coexisted for hundreds of years. In one village, the church bells and temple chanting can ring at the same time without disturbing each other. The afternoon I arrived in Bingzhongluo, I stood on the viewing platform and saw the most breathtaking canyon scenery I have ever witnessed. The Nujiang makes a huge U-shaped bend here, with emerald green water quietly flowing at the bottom of a canyon hundreds of meters deep. On both sides are vertical rock walls with distinct geological layers, different colored strata stacked like a mille-feuille. Scattered halfway up the distant mountainside are a few households surrounded by small patches of farmland, where green and yellow intertwine. Further away are the continuous snowy peaks of Biluo Snow Mountain and Meili Snow Mountain, shining white under the sunlight. I stood there for half an hour, speechless. Early the next morning, I went to Wuli Village. This village is the most remote natural village in Bingzhongluo, inaccessible by road and only reachable by walking along the ancient Tea Horse Road carved into the cliff. The path is just over a meter wide, with a rock wall on one side and the Nujiang River dozens of meters below on the other. I dared not look outward while walking. After about forty minutes and turning a bend, Wuli Village suddenly appeared before me. The entire village is built on a small terrace by the Nujiang, surrounded by green mountains. The village is small, with only a dozen households. Wooden houses are scattered among the green fields, with stones placed on the roofs to prevent them from being blown away by the wind. Morning mist rises from the river surface, slowly enveloping the whole village. Houses and trees appear faintly in the fog, with occasional sounds of chickens and dogs. The scene was so beautiful it seemed unreal, yet it was truly right in front of me. Walking through the village, I found that the lifestyle here is completely disconnected from the outside world. There is no cell phone signal, no internet, no shops. Villagers grow their own corn and vegetables, raise chickens and pigs, working from sunrise to sunset. At the village entrance, I met an elderly lady drying corn. She smiled warmly and gestured to me. Although we couldn’t communicate verbally, her enthusiasm and kindness needed no translation. Another place in Bingzhongluo that left a deep impression on me was Shimen Pass. This is the narrowest section of the Nujiang Canyon, where the rock walls on both sides almost close in, like a giant stone gate squeezing the Nujiang in the middle. Standing below and looking up, the sky is squeezed into a narrow slit by the cliffs. The Nujiang becomes very rapid here, with the roaring water sound deafening. The overwhelming power of nature here inspires both awe and excitement. I stayed in Bingzhongluo for three days. The most unforgettable moment was watching the zip line by the Nujiang River. Previously, there were no bridges across the Nujiang, and locals relied on a steel cable to zip across the river. Although most places now have bridges, you can still see zip lines in some remote sections. I witnessed a local tie a rope to the steel cable, hang himself on it, with dozens of meters of Nujiang below his feet, and zip across in a flash. The whole process took less than ten seconds, but it made my heart leap to my throat. The nights in Bingzhongluo are also special. There is no light pollution here, and after dark, the sky is full of stars with the Milky Way clearly visible. But the night sky in Bingzhongluo is different from other places—because of the high mountains on both sides, the Milky Way looks like a bridge spanning between two mountains, with stars densely arranged above the canyon. I lay in the courtyard of the inn watching for a long time, occasionally hearing distant church hymns, making the night in this deep mountain area feel especially ethereal and pure. On the day I left, I wondered why Bingzhongluo is called "the place where humans and gods coexist." Maybe it’s because the beauty here surpasses anything humans can create. Standing at the canyon edge, looking at the emerald river and the villages wrapped in clouds and mist, you truly feel that gods live here. But Bingzhongluo is changing. I heard that Nujiang plans to build hydropower stations. If built, the water level in the canyon will rise, submerging many villages and ancient paths. So if you want to see this true paradise on earth, go soon. Nujiang First Bend: Viewing platform 3 km south of Bingzhongluo Town, free entry Wuli Village: About 40 minutes walk along the Tea Horse Road, narrow path, be careful Shimen Pass: About 10 km from Bingzhongluo towards Qiuna Tong Qiuna Tong Village: About 15 km north of Bingzhongluo, the last village on the Nujiang ⏰ Recommended trip duration: 3-4 days 💰 Very low cost, accommodation 60-150 RMB, meals 20-30 RMB per person 💡 Tips: About 10 hours by car from Kunming to Bingzhongluo, recommend breaking the trip into segments; poor road conditions in rainy season, be careful; many areas have no signal, bring power banks and cash; large temperature difference between day and night, bring warm clothes; respect the local multi-religious beliefs

Recently, we invited former Black Pearl chef Shizi and floral artist Zhizhi to venture into the pristine forests of Shangri-La with bamboo baskets in hand. They brought back twigs, moss, mushrooms, lichen, and tree bark to create a unique dining experience—the "Sangzhu Wine Tasting Event." Shizi crafted a "Tibetan Eight Auspicious Symbols" dinner, blending the authentic flavors of Tibet and Yunnan with the soul of Shangri-La wines. The Eight Auspicious Symbols were transformed into blessings for the palate. · *Appetizers:** Weixi black truffle, Deqin cheese "Qula," and Xining rose pastry, paired with Sniyaka dry red wine. These local delicacies symbolize goodwill and serendipitous encounters. · *Four Main Courses:** 1️⃣ **Wisdom and Enlightenment:** Shangri-La raspberries and Ruili Hani fermented chili with Snow Mountain Secret Realm dry white wine. A collision of sweet, sour, rich, and serene flavors. 2️⃣ **Freedom and Auspiciousness:** Shangri-La butter and matsutake mushrooms paired with MALOE dry white wine. The creamy richness and crisp minerality interplay like alternating sunny and rainy days on the plateau. 3️⃣ **Purity and Wisdom:** Chanterelle mushrooms and Xishuangbanna fragrant bay fruit paired with Benzilan dry red wine, Shuo Ri Lam. Tropical fruit aromas meet highland fungi. 4️⃣ **Blessings and Abundance:** Yak meat, Benzilan white corn, and Yushu wild Tibetan onions paired with Estelle dry red wine. The harmony of meat, grain, and wine flavors reaches perfection. The dessert featured Lhasa ginseng fruit "Juema," with its soft and powdery texture symbolizing longevity and blessings. During the event, Zhizhi shared her insights on table aesthetics, emphasizing that what they brought back from the forest was not just twigs and moss but also the essence of the natural alpine garden, often called the "Mother of World Gardens" by botanists. All the wines served that evening came from the Shangri-La region, located in the core area of the Three Parallel Rivers. The grapevines grow on slopes at altitudes of 1,800–2,800 meters, benefiting from abundant sunlight, significant temperature differences, and nutrient-rich soil, resulting in an unparalleled mineral quality in the wines. Ingredients sourced from Weixi to Yushu, Lhasa to Xishuangbanna, and grapes from Benzilan to Jiangpo Village came together to create this extraordinary feast. The forest was brought to the table, the terroir was poured into glasses, and the stories found their way into hearts. Shangri-La is not far away; it’s right here at this table.

📍 Location: Laomudeng Village and Zhiziluo, Fugong County, Nujiang Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China High above the Nujiang River, the mountain villages of Laomudeng and Zhiziluo reveal a quieter, more remote side of Yunnan. Nestled along the slopes of the Biluo Snow Mountain at around 1,800 metres above sea level, Laomudeng looks out across the dramatic Nujiang Grand Canyon, with the Gaoligong Mountains rising on the opposite side of the river. 🏔️ Here, the landscape unfolds in magnificent layers: steep green mountains, deep river valleys, scattered village houses and clouds drifting between distant peaks. The winding roads leading through the region offer constantly changing views, making the journey itself as memorable as the destinations. Laomudeng is home to Nu communities whose traditions and way of life are closely connected to the surrounding mountains. Nearby Zhiziluo, often associated with the area's former county-seat history, offers a different atmosphere, with traces of an earlier era set against an expansive mountain backdrop. Exploring both places provides an opportunity to appreciate not only the scenery but also the human stories woven into this remote corner of northwestern Yunnan. For travellers seeking an alternative to China's more crowded tourist destinations, this region offers a rewarding combination of mountain scenery, village culture and road-trip adventure. The vastness of the Nujiang Grand Canyon is especially striking when viewed from elevated vantage points, where the river appears as a ribbon winding between towering ranges. 📸 Photography Tip: Look for viewpoints that capture the Nujiang River between the opposing mountain ranges. Wide-angle shots work well for the immense canyon landscape, while village rooftops framed by misty peaks can create more intimate compositions. Early mornings may bring atmospheric clouds, but mountain weather can change quickly, so allow extra time for the journey. In Laomudeng and Zhiziluo, the mountains are more than a backdrop. They shape the villages, the roads and the rhythm of daily life — offering a memorable glimpse into the natural and cultural richness of the Nujiang Valley. 🌿

Exploring Qamdo | Tea Horse Plaza and the City Museum: Understanding the vibrant life and ancient history of Eastern Tibet Traveling through the Hengduan Mountains where three rivers run parallel, many travelers pass through Qamdo, often rushing toward distant snow-capped mountains and canyons, easily overlooking the charm of this major town in Eastern Tibet. As a pivotal hub on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, Qamdo boasts both magnificent natural scenery and a vibrant, bustling urban life. Upon arriving in the city, Tea Horse Plaza and the City Museum are two must-visit spots to understand the human history of this land—one offers a glimpse into daily life, the other a look into thousands of years of history, completing a perfect urban tour that balances stillness and motion. Located in the heart of the city, Tea Horse Plaza is the center of the city's vitality and carries the cultural memory of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. Covering 20,000 square meters, the plaza cleverly blends traditional Tibetan architectural elements with modern urban design. Wood carvings, colorful paintings, and relief patterns can be seen everywhere, while the scattered buildings replicate the style of old tea horse post stations. Shops line both sides, gathering handmade specialties, Tibetan tea drinks, and unique restaurants. Pedestrians come and go, and local residents mingle with travelers from afar. Strolling through the plaza during the day, you can browse the street-side shops, pick up small items with unique Kham characteristics, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the old town. The true highlight of Tea Horse Plaza, however, comes after nightfall. As the lights turn on one by one, the entire block is illuminated in brilliant colors, and the musical fountain rises and falls with the melody. Local men, women, and children spontaneously gather, forming a large circle to dance the Guozhuang dance. There are no barriers or status requirements; travelers are welcome to join in, follow the beat, and immerse themselves in the daily entertainment of the Kham people amidst laughter and joy. The evening breeze carries the scent of city life, and in this moment, the fatigue of the journey fades away, allowing you to truly touch the vivid, warm pulse of Qamdo. A ten-minute walk from Tea Horse Plaza brings you to the Qamdo City Museum. Admission is free, allowing you to embark on a journey through thousands of years of time. The museum houses tens of thousands of artifacts, providing a complete overview of Eastern Tibet, from prehistoric times and the Karuo civilization to the flourishing trade of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. Stepping into the exhibition hall, ancient dinosaur fossils catch your eye first, pulling your thoughts back to the ancient earth of hundreds of millions of years ago. Within the hall, relics of the Karuo culture are quietly displayed. The most notable is a replica of the double-bodied pottery jar, with its unique and primitive shape covered in ancient patterns. Dating back four to five thousand years, it bears witness to the wisdom and life of the early ancestors on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and is a highly representative artifact of the Karuo culture. Heading to the second floor, the themed exhibition area of the Ancient Tea Horse Road is particularly moving. Rusted stirrups, worn-out saddlebags, and yellowed, ancient account books—each old object quietly tells the story of the caravan days. Light projections simulate the scene of caravans crossing mountains and ridges, and you can almost hear the camel bells echoing in the mountains. It is easy to imagine the thousands of mule and horse teams shuttling through the mountains, with tea, salt, and cloth being exchanged and circulated here, as the prosperous past of Qamdo as a major trade hub slowly unfolds before your eyes. In addition to cultural relics, the museum also fully displays Kham folk culture, including clothing, utensils, and religious objects. Spending two to three hours exploring in detail will give you a clear understanding of the historical origins of the Eastern Tibetan land, adding a rich narrative background to the scenery you will see later in your journey. Many visiting travelers remark that while the experience in Qamdo is excellent, the overall cost of living is relatively high. Most supplies in plateau cities rely on long-distance transportation, making dining and accommodation costs significantly higher than in inland cities. To have a comfortable trip, you can master a few tips. For dining, choose restaurants frequently visited by locals; a bowl of hot Tibetan noodles and a pot of sweet tea are quite cost-effective. For accommodation, prioritize oxygen-equipped lodgings in the city to alleviate altitude sickness. Spending around the plaza varies depending on your budget, so there is no need to blindly purchase high-priced souvenirs. If your itinerary takes you through Qamdo, you don't have to leave all your time for the distant scenery. Set aside half a day: walk through the museum during the day to look back at thousands of years of civilization, stroll through Tea Horse Plaza in the evening, and watch a lively Guozhuang dance at night. On one side is the profound history preserved in artifacts, and on the other is the vibrant reality of daily life. The story of the ancient Tea Horse Road is fully presented in this balance of stillness and motion. Before heading off to the next mountain journey, take the time to truly feel the unique warmth of this Eastern Tibetan city.

Nujiang River Slow Travel Guide (September-October): Avoid Popular Tourist Spots and Explore the Hidden Gems of the Hengduan Mountains In September and October, the rainy season in Nujiang ends, rainfall decreases, and the river water loses its turbidity, revealing a jade-like turquoise. The mountain forests gradually unfold in shades of pale yellow and deep red. Autumn mists are gentle, visibility improves, and there are far fewer tourists than during the National Day holiday peak. This guide breaks away from the typical "Bingzhongluo + Nujiang First Bend + Wuli Village" route, focusing instead on ancient villages on the mountainside, side roads in the canyon, traditional folk customs, light hiking, and pristine towns. This 4-day, 3-night relaxed self-driving route balances majestic canyon scenery, diverse ethnic cultures, and rustic charm. It emphasizes a relaxed pace and a pristine atmosphere, making it ideal for travelers who want to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the Hengduan Mountains. Key Points Before Your Trip · Best Time to Visit: Mid-September to Late October. Daytime temperatures range from 16-26°C, with significant temperature differences between day and night. Nighttime temperatures in high-altitude villages can drop below 8°C, so be sure to pack a windproof jacket, a light down jacket, and long pants. UV radiation is very strong in the mountains, so sun protection is essential. Roads and dirt tracks are slippery, so wear non-slip hiking shoes. Occasional light showers are possible, so carry a folding umbrella. There is still a risk of rockfalls on some sections, so avoid driving at night if possible. · Transportation: Self-driving or hiring a local car is the safest option. The main roads of the scenic highway are in good condition, but the side roads and village roads are winding and narrow. If you are from out of town, it is advisable to first travel to Dali/Baoshan and then rent a car or find a reliable driver. Public buses are infrequent and time-consuming, so they are not recommended. Many less-visited villages lack precise navigation points, so ask locals for directions. Fill up your tank at gas stations along the way whenever possible. For the Dulong River, you need to obtain a permit in advance and allow ample time; it is not recommended for beginners to attempt this trip in a short period. · Accommodation Ideas: Avoid the trendy scenic guesthouses in Bingzhongluo. If you prefer the vibrant atmosphere of the old town, choose the old town along the Liuku River in Lushui, with its full range of restaurants and amenities. For a tranquil, high-altitude experience, choose a regular guesthouse near Laomudeng in Pihe Township (avoid the overpriced trendy spots). If you enjoy the rustic charm of the canyon, stay in small family-run guesthouses in Shiyueliang Township, Fugong, or Pengdang Township, Gongshan. For a more in-depth experience, stay in guesthouses in Dimaluo Village, which offer a strong mountain atmosphere but with simple facilities. Tip: The First Bend of the Nujiang River and Laomudeng Church can be briefly visited along the way. This guide focuses on less-explored mountain villages, the branch roads of the Ancient Tea Horse Road, the countryside on the opposite bank of the canyon, and the authentic daily lives of various ethnic groups, unlocking another side of Nujiang beyond its "heavenly destination" label. 4-Day Off-the-Beaten-Path Itinerary (Relaxing Version) Day 1: Lushui Suburbs - River Valley Charm and Hidden Highlands Today, don't rush north; first, acclimatize to the canyon's rhythm. In the morning, instead of visiting the popular Baihualing, we'll head to the area around Denggeng Village, strolling slowly along the riverside path to see the old site of a traditional Lisu bathhouse (viewing only from a distance to respect local customs). From the riverbank, we can see the emerald green river crashing against the rocks up close. We'll also explore the village behind Xiaoshaba, untouched by commercialization, with only villagers' vegetable gardens, banana groves, and old-fashioned wooden houses. At noon, we'll find a local restaurant that has been open for many years in Liuku's old town. In the afternoon, we'll drive to Luzhang Old County Town, a quiet mountain town that was once the site of the prefectural capital. The old streets, old-style guesthouses, and small square surrounded by old trees retain the atmosphere of the last century. Standing on the high ground, we can overlook the distant Nujiang Grand Canyon, and there are very few tourists. We'll hike lightly along the simple trail behind the mountain, listening to the wind rustling through the trees. In the evening, we'll return to the riverbank to watch the sunset paint the river a warm gold. We'll stay overnight in Liuku, buying some snacks and drinking water to replenish our supplies for the journey north. Day 2: Pihe - Fugong Mountain Trail: City of Memories and Ancient Villages in the Clouds (Highlights) Today we'll take the mountain trail, avoiding the crowds along the beautiful riverside. In the morning, we'll head to Zhiziluo, an old county town known as the "City of Memories." Don't just visit the famous school buildings; explore the alleys deep within the old town. Old post offices, old auditoriums, and old houses stand quietly, time seems to slow down. ⚠️These are all permanent residents; please be quiet and do not trespass. Lunch will be in the old street of Pihe Township. In the afternoon, we won't limit ourselves to the main scenic area of Laomudeng. Navigate to Shawa Village, a Lisu ethnic village hidden at the foot of Biluo Snow Mountain. The winding mountain road leads upwards, with terraced fields unfolding in layers. Opening the window reveals views of Crown Mountain and the distant canyon. The village has a century-old church and old-fashioned wooden houses, with minimal commercialization. You can sit under the large banyan tree at the village entrance and daydream. If you have the energy, you can hike a short, gentle mountain trail and enjoy panoramic views of the Gaoligong Mountains. Return to the vicinity of Laomudeng in the evening to view the sea of clouds over the canyon; stay overnight at a guesthouse halfway up the mountain, where you can see a sky full of stars on a clear day. Day 3: Fugong – Gongshan: Canyon Secrets and Nu Ethnic Villages Drive north along the beautiful highway throughout the day, but take only side roads. The first stop is the Stone Moon Viewing Platform. Avoid the main platform and take the adjacent viewing path; you can still see the natural stone moon-shaped hole in Gaoligong Mountain, and it's quieter and less crowded. Afterwards, drive to Chala Village, a traditional Nu ethnic village where watermills, old wooden houses, and terraced fields along the river are well-preserved, showing traces of traditional Nu life. Most tourists just pass through and don't stop specifically. We had a home-style lunch in Gongshan County. In the afternoon, instead of visiting the core scenic area of Bingzhongluo, we navigated to Dimaluo Village in Pengdang Township. This valley village is nestled deep in the canyon, with grasslands, streams, and pine forests stretching along the way. We could walk a gentle forest path. This is the starting point of the ancient trail to the Biluo Snow Mountain Pass (do not venture into the long-distance trek on your own; a local guide is required). In the village, we witnessed the daily lives of the Tibetan, Nu, and Lisu ethnic groups, a vibrant and harmonious blend of cultures. In the evening, we took a walk along the Dimaluo River. We stayed overnight in Pengdang Township for a peaceful rest. Day 4: A Reverse Roaming Tour of Bingzhongluo's Outskirts – Rural Countryside and Slow-Paced Riverside Experiences Today, we avoided the crowds in the center of Bingzhongluo Town and explored the outskirts. In the morning, navigate to the rice paddies of Dongfeng Village. From September to October, the rice fields turn golden, stretching along the Nujiang River terrace. You can witness this idyllic scene of "humans and gods living together" without needing a ticket. Avoid the crowded entrance to the popular Tea Horse Road in Wuli Village; instead, walk along the riverside path on the opposite bank for a panoramic view of the village (no forced entry), and quietly gaze at the wooden houses shrouded in mist. Lunch will be at a small shop deep in the old street of Bingzhongluo Town. In the afternoon, choose one of two routes: 👉Route A (Leisure): Stroll along the riverside path outside Shimen Pass, watching the river flow through the treacherous mountain pass; 👉Route B (Cultural): Wander through the alleys of Jiasheng Village, avoiding the main roads, exploring ordinary houses, old fruit trees, and farmhouses, experiencing authentic rural life. Before returning, buy some local mountain products and souvenirs at a small shop in the town, concluding the trip. Must-Try Local Delicacies List (No Instagram Filters) · **Lacquer Oil Chicken:** A signature dish of Nujiang, slow-cooked free-range chicken in lacquer oil, with a rich and mellow aroma. Those with allergies should try a small amount first and not eat too much at once. · **Pipa Meat:** A Nujiang ethnic minority intangible cultural heritage cured meat, smoked over a hearth year-round, savory and oily. Can be steamed or stir-fried, with a strong rustic flavor. · **Laowo Ham:** Cured using traditional methods from Gaoligong Mountain black pigs, with a rich aroma. Thinly sliced and eaten raw or stir-fried, it's excellent. · **Lisu Hand-Grabbed Rice:** Served in a bamboo basket, rice is paired with cured meat, potatoes, and wild vegetables. A hearty portion, perfect for sharing. · **Corn Sand Porridge:** Slow-cooked with coarse corn sand, served with local fermented black beans and pickled vegetables. Simple, warming, and a staple food for locals. · **Xia La:** Chicken stir-fried in lacquer oil and then boiled with rice wine. A uniquely warming dish. High in alcohol content; drink responsibly and do not attempt if driving. Tips: For meals, prioritize small, unassuming shops frequented by locals on the old streets of towns and villages; prices for wild mountain ingredients and preserved meats vary significantly, so confirm prices before ordering; for first-timers, try small quantities of lacquer-based foods; try to avoid the first restaurant at the entrance of scenic areas, venturing deeper into the old streets for better value. Avoid Pitfalls & Helpful Tips · Many mountain villages and side trail locations have very few shops, so prepare drinking water, snacks, a power bank, and mosquito repellent in advance; mountain roads have many curves, so drive slowly and pass quickly through sections with falling rocks; do not approach steep slopes without guardrails near rivers, and do not wade in the water. · The temperature difference between day and night is huge in September and October, so dress in layers; the weather in high-altitude areas changes rapidly, from sunny to foggy in a second; check road conditions and weather warnings daily before departure, allow extra time, and do not over-schedule your itinerary. · Nujiang is a multi-ethnic region, so please respect local customs in villages; obtain permission before photographing residents, churches, and traditional buildings; do not make loud noises, and take your trash with you. - Less-known villages offer simple amenities, mostly lacking trendy cafes and fancy desserts; large supermarkets and medical resources are concentrated in Liuku, Fugong, and Gongshan county towns. · The itinerary can be flexibly adjusted: those who prefer hiking can slow down the pace of Dimaluo on the third day (only walking the gentler sections); those who enjoy the cultural and historical villages can extend the mountain route on the second day; those who simply want to relax and enjoy the sea of clouds over the canyon can cut some stops, focusing on slow driving and contemplation, without forcing themselves to visit every place. Many people's impression of the Nujiang River is limited to a few photos of the sea of clouds, the First Bend, and the misty village that flood social media. But the real Nujiang River is hidden in the traces of time in the old buildings of Zhiziluo, the flowing mist above the terraced fields of Shawa Village, the cool streams in the Dimaluo Valley, the sound of the watermill turning in Chala Village, and a bowl of steaming hot lacquer-oil chicken by the hearth. In the gentle, clear autumn days of September and October, there's no need to chase after trendy tourist spots. Simply stroll along the canyons and mountain paths, and you'll discover a quiet, vibrant, and unassuming side hidden deep within the Hengduan Mountains.

Departing from Lijiang, travel west along the Xiangli Expressway toward Shangri-La. The entire route lies on the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the central Hengduan Mountains, within the core area of the "Three Parallel Rivers" World Natural Heritage site. The road's elevation gradually climbs from over 2,000 meters, revealing a shifting landscape and cultural tapestry—from the Lijiang Basin and the Jinsha River Valley to the vast Tibetan plateau. The first leg of the journey takes you through Naxi villages in Lijiang, where traditional earth-and-wood houses with blue-tiled, sloping roofs line the road, offering a quiet, rustic glimpse into Naxi culture. As you reach the border between Lijiang and Shangri-La, you'll encounter the magnificent Tiger Leaping Gorge. Carved over millions of years by the rushing Jinsha River, this world-class gorge is flanked by Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to the south and Haba Snow Mountain to the north. Legend has it that a tiger once leaped across the river using a giant rock in the middle, giving the gorge its name. This was once a treacherous pass on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, serving as a vital artery for trade and cultural exchange between Yunnan and Tibet. Today, the spectacular Jinsha River Bridge on the Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway—with its deck standing nearly 250 meters above the river—stands as a world-class engineering feat, transforming this ancient natural barrier into an accessible route. Passing through the gorge, the elevation climbs to over 3,200 meters as you arrive in the Tibetan township of Xiaozhongdian, located 37 kilometers from downtown Shangri-La. Historically an important post station on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, this traditional Tibetan settlement is filled with the rich culture of the Kham region, where you'll see rammed-earth Tibetan houses, prayer flags, and Mani stone piles around every corner. Today, the Xiangli Expressway, the Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway, and National Highway 214 traverse the region, effectively bridging the natural barriers of the Hengduan Mountains and ending Diqing's history of lacking expressways and railways. This short journey—from Naxi pastoral landscapes to alpine canyons and finally to the pristine Tibetan plateau—offers a firsthand look at the evolution of the thousand-year-old Ancient Tea Horse Road.

The northwest Yunnan grand loop concluded successfully. I had originally planned a self-drive trip along the Nujiang route (Dali–Liuku–Laomudeng–Gongshan–Bingzhongluo–Deqin–Shangri-La), but considering that G219 and the Dulong River sections have many S turns and winding mountain roads, I decided to join a guided tour. The whole trip was incredibly smooth. Total time spent in traffic added up to less than 1 hour, and there were few tourists at the destinations, giving the impression it wasn't the National Day holiday. The Nujiang route is indeed off the beaten path. Our driver was fearless, blasting through S turns as if on a highway. Along the way, the Nujiang, Lancang, and Jinsha rivers run parallel, and the Dulong River is truly Yunnan's last hidden realm. On both sides of the Nujiang Grand Canyon are the Gaoligong Mountains and Biluo Snow Mountain, with a sea of clouds spreading. After entering Deqin, Meili Snow Mountain, Baima Snow Mountain, Haba Snow Mountain, Yulong Snow Mountain, the Jinsha River, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Baishuitai, and Lugu Lake came into view — so much to take in. Northwest Yunnan really is the pinnacle of Yunnan's natural scenery [strong][strong][strong]

A heartfelt reminder to everyone 🙅! Don't casually visit Yunnan in October or November! Many people only remember Dali Erhai Lake, Lijiang Ancient Town, and Xishuangbanna Night Market, thinking Yunnan is just crowded tourist hotspots and monotonous ancient towns. Little do they know that late autumn is when Yunnan truly shines! ✨ After enduring the continuous rain and misty mountains of the rainy season, Yunnan welcomes its most clear and layered season. The mountains gradually turn reddish-brown, the plains are covered in the warm gold of harvest, the ginkgo leaves slowly shimmer, the lakes are crystal clear, and the air is filled with the aroma of mushrooms, the salty scent of ham, the sweet fragrance of flowers and fruits, and the fragrance of wild plants 🍂. They say the area is too vast and the travel too tiring, and the temperature fluctuations too unpredictable, but in reality, it's a completely therapeutic and addictive experience. With fewer tourists, more affordable prices, and the hidden gems of local life slowly emerging, you'll witness firsthand the morning sea of clouds sweeping over the mountain ridges and the sunset bathing the valley villages in soft light. Once you've been here, you truly won't want to leave! 😭 Here's a hands-on, practical guide, no tricks, no pitfalls—beginners can just copy it! ✅ 🌤️First, the truth | The real story behind the "suffering" everyone talks about Many people discourage visiting Yunnan in autumn, but that's a misconception! 🙏 Rainfall decreases significantly across the province in October and November, with a high probability of sunny days. Thin clouds often appear in the mornings, and the days are dry and clear. There's no sweltering heat and humidity of midsummer, nor the nuisance of mosquitoes. Late October to November is the golden window for autumn scenery: the ginkgo trees in Tengchong turn golden, the alpine forests display their colorful hues, late autumn wild mushrooms are harvested, and mountain fruits and vegetables, as well as homemade cured meats, gradually come to market. It's not suitable for a rushed tour of popular cities, but rather for leisurely walks through less-traveled valleys, exploring original villages, and taking light hikes to unwind and immerse oneself in the diverse ethnic cultures – a window of opportunity for maximum relaxation. The only minor drawback is the extreme vertical temperature difference, intense ultraviolet radiation at high altitudes, and cool mornings and evenings in the mountains: Daytime temperatures in the plains range from 16-24°C, perfect for long sleeves and light clothing; however, at higher altitudes or after sunset, the perceived temperature may drop to 6-10°C; mountain trails are prone to condensation and slipperiness; and mountain weather is unpredictable, with temperatures dropping rapidly with a gust of wind. As long as you stick to layering outfits, avoid forcing yourself to travel to several cities in one day, and allow time for relaxation, you won't suffer at all. Instead, you can unlock the tranquil autumn scenery of Yunnan, free from the noise of tour groups. After the National Day holiday, guesthouse and restaurant prices have dropped significantly, so you don't need to compete for popular photo spots. Hidden villages, less-traveled valleys, and old town areas offer a rare sense of relaxation! 📍Off-the-beaten-path spots|Avoid the tourist hotspots and explore local hidden gems (Avoiding the crowded main streets of Dali Old Town, Lijiang Sifang Street, Shuanglang's popular coastal area, and the paid core areas of Tengchong Ginkgo Village. Focusing on pristine villages, quiet mountain trails, and views of the old town's everyday life) 1. Baoshan·Mengxin Village Outer Moss Stone Forest Hiking Route (Avoiding popular photo spots) Many people head straight for the crowded areas of Tengchong Rehai and Ginkgo Village, but miss this quiet village hidden in Zhonghe Town, blessed with volcanic landforms. No need to crowd into popular photo spots; simply stroll along the 5km leisurely, gentle trail starting from Daba Natural Village. Streams accompany you, volcanic forests display a gradient of colors, and rock surfaces are covered in round, green, spherical moss. Small caves and pristine woodlands also abound. There are almost no tour groups; you'll occasionally encounter locals picking wild fruit or taking walks. The air is moist and clear, allowing you to experience Yunnan's unique volcanic paradise without strenuous hiking. The softest sunlight is between 3-5 pm, creating stunning light and shadow effects in the forest. The outer trails are free to access, and 1.5-2 hours is just right for a visit. Tips: Wear non-slip shoes on the gravelly mountain paths; stay on established trails; protect the delicate moss ecosystem; return to the village entrance before dark. 2. Lanping·Luoguqing Lover's Dam Outer Meadow (excluding the core paid viewing platform) Most people only know Dali and Lijiang, and few have heard of this Pumi ethnic minority's secret valley. No need to crowd into popular viewpoints; simply stroll along the gentle paths surrounding the village to the edge of Lover's Dam. Danxia landforms embrace expansive meadows, streams meander through the woodlands, and distant mountains are painted in autumn hues. Quietly scattered wooden houses dot the landscape, where you can see Pumi villagers drying grains and tending their vegetable gardens. Unspoiled by over-commercialization, the only sounds are birdsong and the wind rustling through the forest – this is the unspoiled Yunnan many imagine. The atmosphere is most atmospheric from afternoon until sunset. The outer areas are free; a visit takes about 1.5 hours. Note: High altitude and strong winds; do not trespass on private pastures or property; respect Pumi customs; bring a windproof jacket. Alternative: Residential alleys around Zhuanxin, Kunming (avoiding trendy photo spots) Locally hidden gems; compared to tourist hotspots, these old alleys hold the most authentic Kunming everyday breakfast stalls, braised food shops, and dried goods stalls; unpretentious, the vibrant atmosphere is palpable, perfect for a leisurely stroll, a quick bite to eat at a home-cooked meal, and a relaxing break. 🍖Authentic Food|Avoid touristy restaurants, seek out local favorites Yunnan cuisine isn't just about trendy wild mushroom hotpot and flower cakes; it's also about the rich, authentic flavors of old-town and residential shops. Fresh, flavorful, perfectly balanced between sour and spicy, highlighting the natural taste of the ingredients, these are daily favorites for locals, offering great value. 1. Old Kunming Small Pot Rice Noodles near Zhuanxin (Old Residential Shop) A decades-old neighborhood breakfast gem, rarely marketed online, a morning staple for long-time Kunming residents. The signature mixed sauce rice noodles have a piping hot, rich broth, chewy rice noodles, and a perfectly balanced aroma of fermented bean curd. You can also order fried potatoes, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, paired with a bowl of sweet papaya juice to cleanse the palate. No fancy plating, just the warm, comforting taste that locals have enjoyed since childhood – great value for money. Tip: Popular during breakfast and lunch hours, try to avoid peak times; portions are generous, order less and ask for more; seating is limited. 2. Clay Pot Dishes Home-Style Restaurant (Baoshan Residential Area Branch) A local favorite, this home-style restaurant has a simple storefront and many repeat customers. Everything is cooked to order. The signature ginkgo and chicken soup is fragrant and mellow, with soft, sweet ginkgo nuts; the roasted pork with shredded radish is spicy and appetizing; and the Tengchong thin slices are thin and translucent, with a refreshing sour and spicy flavor. The flavors are mild and rich, not overly strong, suitable for small gatherings of 2-3 people. Tip: The flavors are on the savory, salty, sour, and spicy side, so you can ask for less beforehand; queues are common during mealtimes; open for lunch and dinner. 🗺️A Concise 3-Day Relaxing Itinerary (No rushing, no special forces, minimal backtracking) · Day 1: Old Town & Suburbs - Slow Adaptation: Avoid Kunming's trendy shopping districts and explore the alleyways and residential areas around Zhuanxin; lunch at a traditional Kunming-style rice noodle shop; afternoon stroll along the gentle paths by Yangzonghai Lake; evening sunset by the lake; dinner featuring local specialties like earthen pot dishes; accommodation prioritizes hotels in Kunming's old town, with convenient access to supermarkets, pharmacies, and transportation hubs, offering better value than guesthouses near scenic spots. · Day 2: Mountain Village Relaxation: Early morning drive/chartered car to Mengxin Village in Baoshan for a leisurely stroll; lunch at a small town shop; afternoon driving slowly along country roads, stopping to admire the autumn scenery of western Yunnan's mountains; evening return to Tengchong city for rest; nighttime sampling street food like Da Jiu Jia (a local specialty) and Xi Dou Fen (a local noodle dish). · Day 3: Hidden Gems & Return Trip: Wake up naturally; if you have the energy, take a short hike to Luoguqing (only the gentler sections); if you have enough time, browse the local farmers' market for mushrooms, dried goods, and cured meats; before heading back, buy some handmade brown sugar, baked candy, and vacuum-packed ham slices as souvenirs; return home at a leisurely pace. ⚠️Practical Tips & Avoidance Guidelines (Based on My Own Mistakes) · ✅Transportation: Public transportation to Mengxin Village and Luoguqing is extremely limited; prioritize driving or hiring a reliable car; western and northern Yunnan have many winding mountain roads and morning fog, so drive slowly; fill up your tank at gas stations whenever possible; avoid remote mountain trails after dark; signal is weak in many rural areas, so download offline maps beforehand; hike within your limits in high-altitude areas, and don't venture onto long, unpaved trails. · ✅Accommodation: Prioritize hotels in residential areas of the city center with complete facilities; popular guesthouses in scenic areas are overpriced, humid, and colder at night; confirm the availability of thick bedding and heating before booking; there are plenty of rooms available during the off-season in October and November, no need to frantically book in advance; temperatures drop significantly in the mountains in November. · ✅Clothing: Strictly adhere to the layering method! Long sleeves + light jacket during the day; a thick windproof jacket is essential when entering the mountains/in the evening; non-slip sports shoes are a must; high SPF sunscreen and a sun hat are essential; the air at high altitudes is dry and windy, so bring lip balm and moisturizing products. · ✅ Mindset: The sea of clouds, colorful forests, and clear skies all depend on the weather; check local photos before you go. Yunnan's charm isn't about checking off every landmark and taking tons of Instagram-worthy shots, but about leisurely strolling through old alleys, exploring quiet villages, walking along streams, enjoying a bowl of hot rice noodles, and watching the clouds drift across the mountain peaks. Respect the customs and traditions of various ethnic groups. Protect the mountain ecosystem. Be cautious about buying overpriced medicinal herbs and silver jewelry from roadside vendors. When eating mushrooms, always choose reputable shops and ensure they are thoroughly cooked. · ✅ Food Avoidance: Restaurants near scenic spots and in trendy areas often have high markups; older shops around the old town's markets offer better deals. Local specialties include small pot rice noodles, thin rice noodles, ginkgo stewed chicken, roasted pork, and "Da Jiu Jia" (a local dish). The food tends to be spicy; discuss this beforehand. If you have a sensitive stomach, bring stomach medicine. The high altitude is dry; remember to sip water frequently. This route avoids Yunnan's most crowded tourist hotspots, allowing more time for quiet, pristine villages, hidden volcanic valleys, the vibrant atmosphere of old towns, and the delicious, comforting flavors of Yunnan home cooking. In October and November, Yunnan sheds its summer gloom and rain, offering a limited-time autumnal gentleness—clear skies, vast clouds, and mountains gradually tinged with autumn colors—for travelers willing to slow down. A sincere reminder: Don't casually visit Yunnan in October and November! Many people only remember Dali's Erhai Lake, Lijiang Ancient Town, and Xishuangbanna's night markets, assuming Yunnan is only about crowded tourist spots and monotonous ancient towns. While some say the vastness of the region makes travel tiring and the temperature fluctuations unpredictable, the experience is actually incredibly therapeutic and addictive. This route avoids the most crowded tourist hotspots in Yunnan, leaving more time for quiet, original villages, volcanic valleys, the vibrant atmosphere of old towns, and the fresh, comforting flavors of Yunnan home cooking. In October and November, Yunnan sheds the summer's misty rain and offers a limited-time autumnal gentleness with clear skies, vast clouds, and mountains gradually tinged with autumn light, for travelers who are willing to slow down.

Nujiang Grand Canyon 4-Day 3-Night Travel Guide 📍 Destination Introduction The Nujiang Grand Canyon, located in the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture in northwestern Yunnan, is one of the deepest and longest canyons in the world—often mentioned alongside the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon and the Colorado Grand Canyon as one of the "Three Great Canyons of the World." Yunnan is the heart of Chinese coffee, and Nujiang holds infinite possibilities. This time, I headed to Lushui in the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, just in time for the 7th Nujiang Specialty Coffee Culture Week. By the rushing Nujiang River, I encountered the canyon's landscapes and the aroma of coffee. Staying at HanTing Hotel Nujiang Lushui, I captured this fragrant, secret journey through my lens. The Nujiang Grand Canyon features two mountains flanking one river, with the Gaoligong Mountains and Biluo Snow Mountain facing each other. The unique hot-dry valley and volcanic ash soil break the 25-degree north latitude limit for coffee cultivation, nurturing specialty coffee beans with unique flavors at 26.5 degrees north latitude. With fresh fruity notes and a long-lasting sweet aftertaste, this is the unique charm of Nujiang coffee. The main venue for this Coffee Culture Week was at the Nujiang West Bank Plaza. You could smell the coffee aroma wafting in the river breeze from afar. The market was bustling, gathering beans from Yunnan's six major coffee-producing regions, along with showcases from local brands like Nu Xiao Ka and Jia An Coffee. The coffee market was where I spent the most time. Stalls were neatly arranged, with roasted coffee beans in glass jars, deep brown and plump. Baristas demonstrated pour-over coffee on-site; as hot water slowly poured over the coffee grounds, a rich aroma gradually spread. I tasted a specialty coffee where local wild ingredients collided with coffee, bringing unexpected surprises to my taste buds. There was also a specialty coffee competition on-site, where coffee artisans showed off their skills, drawing constant praise from onlookers. With the G219 Coffee Passport in hand, I walked and checked in, tasting coffee while watching Lisu song and dance performances. Ethnic costumes and the coffee market in the same frame—every shot was a stunning travel photo full of atmosphere. The opening gala in the evening was even more spectacular. The "Coffee Aroma in Nujiang" segment blended canyon scenery, coffee culture, and Lisu intangible cultural heritage. By the Nujiang River at night, a long table for a thousand-person "hand-grabbed rice" feast was laid out. Hand-grabbed rice, chicken stewed with black cardamom, and coffee desserts were served. Tourists of all ethnic groups sat together, eating and chatting. As the bonfire was lit, everyone danced to the melody—lively and healing. The evening breeze carried the sound of the river and the aroma of coffee. At this moment, the landscape, culture, and fragrance merged into one; this is the romance unique to Lushui. As the night deepened, I drove to HanTing Hotel Nujiang Lushui. The hotel is conveniently located near the city center and offers free parking for self-driving travelers, which is very friendly for those coming from afar. Walking into the lobby, the warm wood decor felt soft and comfortable. The front desk staff were enthusiastic and efficient, handling check-in quickly and thoughtfully suggesting nearby sightseeing routes and local delicacies. The guest room was clean and minimalist, with soft and comfortable bedding, a bathroom with separate wet and dry areas, and stable, abundant hot water. After a long day of traveling, I returned to the room to shed my fatigue. The room had excellent soundproofing, and the sound of the rushing Nujiang River outside turned into gentle white noise. The high-speed internet was stable, allowing me to organize the travel photos and videos of the coffee market and ethnic dances I had taken during the day. The hotel is equipped with a self-service laundry room, where I could wash and dry clothes from my long trip, solving a major travel headache. The next morning, I enjoyed breakfast at the hotel's buffet restaurant. The variety was rich; besides noodles and porridge, there were authentic Nujiang Ersi (rice noodles), and I could even have a cup of freshly ground Nujiang small-grain coffee. A sip of hot coffee awakened my body. Standing by the window, I looked out as the morning light spilled onto the river, making the water shimmer. In just a few days, I experienced the story of a coffee bean traveling from the deep mountains to the cup at the Coffee Culture Week and saw the "golden beans" nurtured by the canyon land. Staying at HanTing Hotel Nujiang Lushui provided a comfortable and stable accommodation experience, making the journey less tiring. Nujiang is more than just magnificent canyons; it also has the aroma of coffee filling the city. When the rushing river meets mellow coffee, and when the wild secret realm meets a thoughtful place to stay, this trip to Lushui holds unexpected surprises. If you plan to come to Nujiang, why not visit during the Coffee Culture Week for a romantic date with the canyon and coffee?

Bingzhongluo sits in Gongshan county, Nujiang prefecture, Yunnan, wedged between the Gaoligong Mountains and Biluo Snow Mountain. Here the Nujiang River turns into a vast river bend, and it is the starting point of National Highway 219's Bingchacha route. Most visitors only check in at the main viewing platform for the Nujiang first bend or make a brief stop at Wuli village; the truly wild and tranquil experiences are hidden in the Gongdang sacred mountain, the cliffside tea-horse ancient trail, the border villages, and the everyday life of multiple ethnic groups. 1. Gongdang sacred mountain high trail | exclusive god's-eye view of the Nujiang first bend (photographer's secret) Ordinary visitors stop at the roadside lower viewing platform, where trees often block the river bend in photos. The narrow path on Gongdang sacred mountain's mid-slope is a local photographers' secret spot. ✅ lesser-known ways to experience: 1. Drive up Gongdang sacred mountain's switchback road to a hidden mid-slope platform to get a full overhead view of the Ω-shaped Nujiang first bend. Kantong village's wooden houses and the terraced fields sit on the peninsula, with the Biluo Snow Mountain range in the distance. In the early morning mist rises from the river and sunrise light fills the emerald water. Very few people visit, so there is no crowding. 2. Continue hiking to the base of a giant white marble boulder. In Tibetan the name Gongdang sacred mountain means white lion. A huge white stone is exposed on the slope; beneath the cliff, listen to the canyon wind and gaze over the whole Bingzhongluo basin and farmland. 💡 tip: The mountain road has many curves and is slippery when wet; try to go up in the early morning, as clouds often roll in by afternoon and can obscure the snow mountain. 2. Wuli village cliffside tea-horse ancient trail | a living thousand-year caravan route, immersive old-village visit Many people only photograph Wuli village from across the highway and do not walk the cliffside ancient trail into the village. This is the most moving, wild cultural route in Bingzhongluo. ✅ lesser-known ways to experience: 1. Cross the river via the iron bridge by Shimen Pass, then walk 1.5 km along the cliffside tea-horse ancient trail chiselled into the rock. A narrow path runs along the cliff with the rushing Nujiang below, and the trail surface still bears thousand-year-old horseshoe marks. After about an hour's hike you reach Wuli village, where stacked log houses scatter down the hillside with terraces, ancient trees, and the Nujiang all in one frame. 2. Visiting the village is more than a photo stop: step into a Nu family home to try freshly grilled stone-slab flatbread and taste wild honey. There are no shops in the village, preserving its original appearance; at dusk smoke rises from chimneys and the only sound left is the river roaring. ⚠️ note: The ancient trail is narrow and there is a rockfall risk; avoid it on rainy days. Respect villagers and do not enter homes without permission. 3. Qiuna-tong and Naqialuo gorges | Yunnan's northernmost border villages, raw canyon wilderness Qiuna-tong is the northernmost village in Yunnan, right next to the Yunnan–Tibet border. Most visitors turn back at Wuli village and miss Qiuna-tong and the Naqialuo gorge. ✅ lesser-known ways to experience: 1. Inside Qiuna-tong village is a century-old chapel with white walls and a red roof, surrounded by snow‑capped wooden houses; at dawn you may hear villagers singing. Fields of highland barley surround the village and turn golden in autumn, creating healing scenes at every turn. 2. Continue north on foot into the Naqialuo gorge, where the Nujiang is squeezed between two mountains and the water roars wildly. Sheer cliffs rise on both banks, making this the most precipitous section of the Nujiang Grand Canyon. Few visitors come here, and the landscape feels utterly untamed. 💡 tip: This area is close to the border, so be sure to carry your ID at all times; do not cross boundary markers. There is no resupply in the gorge, so bring enough drinking water. 4. Century-old churches and slow cultural travel | multiple religions coexist, gentle moments in the canyon What makes Bingzhongluo special is the mixed settlement of the Nu, Lisu, and Tibetan peoples, where Tibetan Buddhism, Catholicism, and traditional mountain-deity beliefs coexist—rare in China. ✅ lesser-known ways to experience: 1. Chongding church, a century-old French-style church with Tibetan woodwork and a European arching roof, is quiet and solemn. On Sunday mornings villagers spontaneously sing in Lisu; their voices drift through wooden windows into the canyon. You don't need to share the faith to feel the pure calm. 2. Puhua temple is one of the few ancient Tibetan Buddhist temples in Nujiang prefecture. Its courtyard is tranquil and backed by snowy peaks—walk around the prayer path in silence and feel the mountain deity faith. 5. night sky and local rural experiences 1. Shimen Pass starry sky: far from town light pollution, stand at Shimen Pass at night and the Milky Way stretches across the canyon with snow‑capped mountains as silhouettes and the river rushing at your feet. For the best atmosphere, stay in guesthouses in Qiuna-tong or Wuli village and avoid town lights. 2. local mountain experiences: during the July–August flowering season, follow local mountain people into the hills to harvest wild honey; at harvest time try rice-field work in Kantong village (Peach Blossom Island), taste riceflower fish, and experience everyday Nu farming life. 📌 two exclusive itineraries you can copy directly Itinerary 1 | relaxed cultural version (for families, not keen on intense hiking) Gongdang sacred mountain for first-bend sunrise → stroll Chongding church → drive to Shimen Pass for photos → evening walk around the Bingzhongluo basin farmland, then stargaze. Itinerary 2 | in-depth wild hiking version (for canyon and cultural lovers) Morning: view from Gongdang sacred mountain; afternoon: hike the Wuli village tea-horse ancient trail; stay in a Qiuna-tong wooden house; next morning visit Qiuna-tong chapel and take a light hike into Naqialuo gorge to feel the Yunnan–Tibet border mountains and rivers. ⚠️ important warnings to avoid problems 1. June–September is the Nujiang rainy season, and mountain roads are prone to landslides and rockfalls—check road conditions before traveling. Some sections of National Highway 219 have frequent rockfalls, so drive cautiously. 2. The high-altitude canyon has large day–night temperature differences; even in summer bring a shell jacket. UV is strong, so prepare sun protection. 3. In border areas, carry your ID at all times. Respect Nu, Lisu, and Tibetan customs; always ask permission before photographing villagers. 4. Do not explore canyon trails alone. The deep sections of Naqialuo gorge have no cell signal—travel with companions.

Moved to tears by the morning mist in Nujiang! This is what a fairyland should look like 🌫️ Woken up by the faint light at 7 AM, I was speechless the moment I opened the inn window—Biluo Snow Mountain was wrapped in mist, and a sea of clouds surged through the Nujiang Grand Canyon, like a flowing ink wash painting. The location of this Nu ethnic inn is incredible. At an altitude of 1,750 meters, the morning mist reaches right to the windowsill, and it feels like you could touch the clouds if you reached out. I quickly got dressed and headed to the terrace to take photos. As the morning mist slowly dissipated, the outline of Gaoligong Mountain gradually became clear, and the peak of Crown Mountain was revealed. The Laomudeng Christian Church appeared faintly in the mist, like a building from a fairy tale. The owner brought over hot butter tea and stone-baked cakes. I sat on the terrace, eating slowly and watching the morning mist drift over the Nujiang River. A morning like this makes traveling thousands of miles to Nujiang worth it.

Most visitors to Diqing come only for the snow mountains and lakes, yet they miss the once-a-year autumn equinox harvest celebration! Many people visit Shangri-La in spring and summer for the flowers, or during the National Day holiday. What they don't know is that the autumn equinox is when Diqing truly comes alive with its most vibrant cultural soul. Most travel guides only cover the snow mountains and grasslands, overlooking the spectacular convergence of the 24 solar terms and Tibetan calendar folk customs on this land of the Three Parallel Rivers. In central China, the autumn equinox is just a textbook concept of equal day and night; but on the Diqing plateau, it's the scent of smoke offerings, barley drying racks, and bonfire dances. It's a time when Tibetan, Lisu, Naxi, Yi, and Han communities come together to celebrate the harvest. The same solar term, yet a completely different way of experiencing it. Have you ever imagined that the 24 solar terms could blend with Tibetan stargazing, Dongba rituals, and Lisu first-taste ceremonies into one grand harvest festival? Many travelers head to Diqing with their hearts set on snow mountains, lakes, and primeval forests. But few realize that the autumn equinox is the most enchanting season on this land of three rivers. At the autumn equinox, day and night are equal, and the summer heat fades away. In inland China, it's just an ordinary date on the calendar; but on the Diqing plateau, it's nature's call to harvest across the snowy highlands 📜. The Tibetan calendar has no fixed date for the autumn equinox; highland villagers determine the season by observing stars and the sun's shadow. Barley turns golden, corn fills out, wild fruit weighs down the branches, and at the foot of the snow mountains, river valleys and meadows quietly don their golden attire. Tibetan villagers rush to harvest barley, hanging the golden stalks in rows on drying racks, letting the highland winds and sunlight do their work. They choose an auspicious day for smoke offerings and prayers, walk the fields in the Wangguo ritual, and give thanks for the land's bounty. When the farm work is done, the whole village gathers for a Guozhuang dance, with butter tea, tsampa, and dried cheese spread across the tables. When one family harvests, the neighbors all lend a hand. In the valleys, the Lisu people hold a first-taste ceremony at the autumn equinox. The newly harvested grains are first offered to ancestors and the mountain spirits, and then the whole family tastes the new crop. As the bonfire blazes and the hulusheng (gourd flute) sounds, the Achimugu dance steps echo through the valley. In Tacheng, the Naxi people worship the Shu deities under sacred trees, giving thanks for the nourishment of mountains and waters. After the harvest, they repair terraced fields and clear irrigation channels, while younger generations visit their elders with new grain and pastries. During the harvest festival, the Shenchuan Reba dance is performed by the rice paddies, where catching fish in the fields and the farm produce market add to the lively atmosphere. The Yi people's first-taste festival and Han customs adapted to the highland harvest all come together here. What's remarkable is how these ethnic customs interweave. In a single village, different ethnic groups help each other with the harvest, offer prayers together, and take turns dancing Guozhuang and Achimugu around the bonfire. The ancient wisdom of the 24 solar terms from central China merges with Tibetan celestial observation and the local traditions of mountain and river reverence shared by all ethnic groups. This is not a festival of any single ethnicity—it's a true portrait of diverse ethnic groups living in harmony on the land of the Three Parallel Rivers 🌾. If you're tired of rushed sightseeing and want to experience authentic highland folk culture, consider visiting Diqing during the autumn equinox. Watch the barley racks sway in the wind, listen to the songs and dances echoing through the valleys, and feel the romance of the harvest season on the snowy plateau. Traveling in early September 2026 with a friend (2 people total), the trip from Dali cost about CNY 350 per person. Nuodeng Ancient Village is hidden deep in the mountains of Yunlong County, Dali, Yunnan. It is a thousand-year-old, uncommercialized Bai village with very few tourists and a very slow pace. The whole village is built on the mountain, has no general admission fee, and focuses on an authentic, immersive experience. This entire guide is based on my personal experience, packed with practical tips, and perfect for beginners who want to avoid the crowds. Detailed itinerary [Nuodeng Ancient Village, Nuodeng Town, Yunlong County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province] 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Transport: Take a direct minibus from the Dali Xiaguan Xingsheng Road Bus Station to Yunlong County. Buses run every half hour starting at 7:10 AM, with the last bus at 4:30 PM. The fare is CNY 42, and the trip takes about 3+ hours. Once in Yunlong County, transfer to a microbus or electric tricycle to reach the village. It is about 7 km, all uphill, and costs CNY 20–25. You can only enter the village on foot from the entrance; there is no other transport. Tickets: The ancient village is free to enter with no general admission fee. A joint ticket for Yuhuang Pavilion is about CNY 30. Be sure to purchase tickets through official scenic area channels. Activities: Start your tour at the Ancient Salt Well at the village entrance. This is the soul of Nuodeng's 2,000-year history and still seeps brine today. You can try a salt-brine egg for CNY 5. Walk up the 72 stone steps, passing the Salt Administration Office ruins and the Huang Family Memorial Archway. Arrive at Yuhuang Pavilion around 11:00 AM—the highest point in the village. Climb up to overlook the entire village, where Bai-style houses are layered along the hillside and the Nuo River winds through the valley below. Early September is peak season for air-drying ham; every household in the village has rows of Nuodeng ham hanging in their courtyards, with rose-colored oil seeping out and a salty, savory aroma filling the air. Insider tips: The entire village consists of uphill stone paths, so be sure to wear non-slip sneakers; do not wear sandals or high heels. Before 9:00 AM, there are the fewest people and the light is softest, making it the best time for photos. A full tour of the ancient village takes about 4–5 hours. [Big Green Tree Area, Nuodeng Ancient Village, Nuodeng Town, Yunlong County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province] 2:00 PM – 5:30 PM Transport: Entirely on foot. You rely on your own two legs within the village; there are no other means of transport. Activities: Head toward the mountainside. In the center of the village, there is a 600-year-old Big Green Tree. Under the tree, there are cafes and teahouses where you can relax with a cup of Nuodeng salt coffee. Behind the Big Green Tree is the gatehouse of the Tiju Office, and the Confucian Temple is nearby. Continue upward to the ham workshop to see the entire process of curing and drying the ham. In September, the autumn air is crisp and the sky is clear. In the afternoon, the light filters through the layers of roofs and spills onto the bluestone paths, making every snapshot feel like a story. Practical tips: 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM is the best time of day for lighting. Wearing plain-colored clothing against the background of Bai earthen walls makes for the best photos. Local households eat dinner early, so it is recommended to have dinner before 5:30 PM; you might not get a hot meal if you are too late. Signal on the mountainside is occasionally unstable, so it is recommended to carry a small amount of cash. [Nuodeng Ancient Village and Taiji Water-Locking Viewing Platform, Nuodeng Town, Yunlong County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province] 6:00 PM – Night Highlights: By evening, most tourists have left, and the village is exceptionally quiet. You can head to the Taiji Water-Locking Viewing Platform east of the village. It's about a 20-minute walk from the village entrance, or you can pay CNY 10 for a ride on a villager's motorcycle. Watch the Bi River wind around the mountain to form a huge "S" shape, resembling a natural Taiji diagram. After dark, there are no streetlights in the village, only scattered lights and the sound of insects. Watching the stars from the terrace of your guesthouse is an excellent choice. In September, the night sky is clear, and the starry sky feels within reach. Tips: There is no lighting in the village alleys at night, so try to walk in groups and do not wander through the alleys alone. The temperature difference in the mountains is large at night. In September, it is about 25°C during the day, but it may drop to 12–15°C at night, so be sure to bring a light jacket. Must-try local food (personally tested) 1. Nuodeng Ham Fried Rice Full address: Available at many farm-style restaurants in Nuodeng Ancient Village; the Big Green Tree Inn restaurant is one I personally tested Average cost: CNY 20–30 Must-order signature dishes: Ham fried rice, stir-fried Nuodeng ham with green peppers Real review: Made with 3-year-aged ham cubes stir-fried with local red rice and green garlic sprouts. The ham oil permeates every grain of rice, full of "wok hei" (breath of the wok), salty and savory with a sweet aftertaste, not greasy at all. Eating the ham slices raw is also worth a try; choose ham aged 3+ years and pair it with cantaloupe for a rich, layered texture. You can get full at farm-style restaurants for CNY 25–40 per person; no need to buy expensive ham at the specialty shops at the village entrance. 2. Ham Stewed with Free-Range Chicken Full address: Farmhouses in Nuodeng Ancient Village (such as Nuodeng Salt Spring Farmhouse, etc.) Average cost: CNY 50–60 Must-order signature dishes: Ham stewed with free-range chicken, cold dish with tree moss Real review: The ham and free-range chicken are stewed together, resulting in a golden broth with a deep, savory flavor—"no need to add salt to the soup." The cold dish with tree moss is sour, spicy, and appetizing; it's a local specialty side dish. It is recommended to book in advance with the guesthouse owner and have it stewed fresh on the day. Complete practical guide Transport guide Full legitimate travel: Dali Xiaguan Xingsheng Road Bus Station → Minibus to Yunlong County (CNY 42, about 3 hours) → Transfer to a microbus or electric tricycle to the village (CNY 20–25, about 15 minutes). Within the village, you rely entirely on walking. The stone paths are sloped; luggage can be transported by mule (about CNY 10 per trip). Do not trust any solicitors or "one-day tour" promoters at the scenic area entrance. Accommodation recommendations Prefer guesthouses in the core area of the ancient village for convenience and to experience the village at night and in the morning. The Big Green Tree Inn is located next to the Big Green Tree in the center of the village, about 200 meters uphill to Yuhuang Pavilion; the location is excellent. Nuodeng Original Color Guesthouse is located at No. 18 in the ancient village; the courtyard environment is good, and guest ratings are generally above 4.8. It is recommended to book one week in advance, as the number of rooms in ancient village guesthouses is generally limited. Real pitfall avoidance guide 1. Refuse locals at the village entrance who offer to lead the way or sell ham; it's easy to get overcharged. 2. Do not buy high-priced ham at specialty shops at the village entrance; it is more practical to buy directly from farmers or guesthouse owners. 3. For ticket reservations, stick to official scenic area channels; you can buy the Yuhuang Pavilion joint ticket at the official scenic area window. 4. The number of tourists is not large in early September, but it is still recommended to arrive early in the morning on weekends to avoid the crowds for the best experience. Essential items (September exclusive) In September, Nuodeng is about 25°C during the day and 12–15°C in the morning and evening. Essentials: Non-slip sneakers (the stone paths are sloped and may be slippery), a light jacket (large temperature difference between day and night), sunscreen and sunglasses, a power bank (signal on the mountainside is weak and drains battery quickly), and a small amount of cash (some farmhouses do not support QR code payments). This early September trip to Nuodeng was relaxing and healing, with a slow pace. It's niche and uncrowded, the food is great, and at about CNY 350 per person, it's highly cost-effective. It is very suitable for friends who want to avoid the crowds in Dali and enjoy authentic ancient villages and slow-paced travel. The entire guide is based on real experience, and beginners can follow it directly.
