In just one week, you can experience the best of Edinburgh, the Highlands, and the Isle of Skye. Here’s the perfect 7-day itinerary: Day 1 – Edinburgh Begin in the capital. Walk the Royal Mile, tour Edinburgh Castle, stroll through Dean Village, and climb Arthur’s Seat for sunset views. In autumn, Holyrood Park glows gold. Day 2 – Glencoe Drive north into the Highlands. The Three Sisters viewpoint and the Lost Valley hike showcase some of Scotland’s most dramatic scenery. Sunrise and sunset bathe the glen in magical light. Day 3 – Kilchurn Castle & Loch Awe Explore the romantic ruins of Kilchurn Castle, reflected in Loch Awe. Early morning mist makes it feel straight out of a fantasy tale. Continue along scenic routes in Argyll & Bute. Day 4 – Fort William & Steall Falls Discover the adventure hub of Fort William. Hike through Glen Nevis to Steall Falls, one of Scotland’s highest waterfalls. Stop at Neptune’s Staircase before resting overnight. Day 5 – Glenfinnan Viaduct & Plodda Falls Catch the Jacobite steam train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct—famous from Harry Potter. Visit the Glenfinnan Monument overlooking Loch Shiel, then detour to Plodda Falls, a hidden cascade surrounded by autumn forest. Day 6 – Isle of Skye Cross the Skye Bridge to magical landscapes. Wander the whimsical Fairy Glen, then hike the Old Man of Storr for sweeping views. Drive the Trotternish Peninsula for rugged coastlines and dramatic cliffs. Day 7 – Return to Edinburgh Head back through the Highlands, stopping in Pitlochry or Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. End your trip with a final whisky toast in Edinburgh. Tips: The best times are September–October for fiery foliage or May–June for long days. A rental car offers flexibility. Pack layers, waterproofs, and sturdy boots—Scotland’s weather changes fast. In one week, you’ll experience castles, waterfalls, mountains, and myths—an unforgettable Scottish adventure. #westerneurope

Even with the rain and arriving a bit too late, Eilean Donan Castle left a lasting impression. Set at the point where three sea lochs meet, just outside the tranquil village of Dornie, this iconic Scottish castle stands dramatic against the landscape—mist and drizzle only add to its allure. Even from the outside, the stone walls and arched bridge look like something out of a legend. Walking around Eilean Donan Castle, you can still appreciate its beauty and the incredible setting. The rain created atmospheric reflections on the water, and the castle lights, as dusk settled in, made everything look a bit magical. Take a moment at the viewpoint just across the bridge for the classic photo (umbrellas recommended if the weather’s like ours!). If you plan to go inside, check the opening times carefully. From May 1 to 31, it’s open daily 09:30–18:00 (last admission at 17:00), and in peak summer it's even earlier from 09:00. We arrived shortly after the gates closed, so if seeing the historic halls and exhibitions is on your list, make sure to get there well ahead of last entry. In the off-season, hours are shorter, especially after late October when doors close by 16:00. Even without an interior visit, Dornie itself is worth a little wander. This small west Highland village is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding lochs and hills. The nearby viewpoints offer stunning perspectives of the castle—sometimes the softest Scottish weather gives the most atmospheric photos. Tips: · Bring a waterproof jacket (this is the Highlands!). · Check the exact seasonal opening hours for the castle before planning your visit. · The car park is right near the castle entrance and makes for easy access even in the rain. · If you just miss castle entry, hang around for blue hour; the castle is spectacular when illuminated at dusk. · Warm up in one of the cozy local cafés or pubs in Dornie after exploring. No matter the weather, Eilean Donan Castle is a must-stop on any Highland adventure. Sometimes, the rain just adds to the Scottish mystique. #EileanDonanCastle #ScotlandTravel #HighlandAdventure #TravelTips #Castles

While staying at Plockton and the Royal Scotsman visited Kyle of Lochalsh, the kind owners of Off the Rails arranged a tour for my son. Alex, the Train Manager, greeted us warmly, and everyone we encountered was delightful, giving my son special attention. They even provided a wheelchair for him to navigate the narrower spaces and explore all the carriages. This stunning train offers an unparalleled experience—imagine enjoying a Dior massage while admiring Highland scenery and grazing cows! My son’s day, or likely his year, was made even more special with a gifted Scotsman pin badge and cap. Huge thanks to Alex and the wonderful crew!

#easytravelpost The Kyle Line (Inverness–Kyle of Lochalsh, 83 mi, 2 h 40 min, ScotRail, single £32, advance from £18) runs past Loch Carron and Plockton. I rode it to Strathcarron, then bus 712 over the Applecross Pass (Bealach na Bà, 626 m) — but the mossy half is the Coille Mhialairigh pine remnant on the Applecross side: 300 yr old Pinus sylvestris with Sphagnum on the turf and Hypnum on the buttress, fog off the Inner Sound till 9. Break at Achnashellach (request stop, 4 trains/day) and walk the 1.5 km to the pine pocket at 7:30 a.m. in May. The Kyle Line right side from Strathcarron shows Loch Carron; the Applecross bus from Shieldaig is the mossy bit. Mistake: I rode to Kyle and back same day — saw Applecross only from the bus window, pine pocket missed, £32×2 for a blur. Break at Achnashellach. Second mistake: I drove Bealach na Bà in October — ice on the hairpins, turned back to Shieldaig, lost the pine walk. May–Sep. Third: I expected card in Shieldaig — £4.50 smoked mackerel roll cash only, ScotRail card, carry £10. Buy in Plockton: a £4.50 prawn roll, not the £18 Kyle hotel. Gear: 2 L water, £90 boots, £50 shell — 626 m Bealach, 4°C. Local rule: ScotRail £32 single, Achnashellach request stop, no drone near the pine (SSSI), stay on the stalkers' path, the Scots pine buttress is 300 yr not a step. Opinion: Kyle Line sells Skye views; the mossy Applecross pine pocket 1.5 km off Achnashellach is the 15-min half with zero Plockton-palm crowd. Would you break a Highland rail ride for a 300-yr pine moss pocket?

#worthitomot #Plockton #Highlands Plockton sits on the Kyle of Lochalsh, 10 min from the Skye Bridge, and microclimate palms line Innes Street because the sea keeps frost off. I came off the Kyleakin ferry replacement (the A87 bridge is free, no toll) at 4 pm, parked in the village car park (£3/hr, £10 day, card), and walked the single seafront lane past the crofters’ cottages and the Plockton Inn (seafood chowder £12, card). The village is tiny—30 min end to end—but the light on the loch with Applecross hills behind is the Highlands compressed into a postcard. I took the 5 pm seal-spotting boat (£18, 45 min, cash or card) from the pier; the skipper pointed out a grey seal hauled on the skerry. Mistake: I slept in Kyle of Lochalsh and drove through Plockton at noon—coach groups filled the lane; late afternoon is when the crofters come home and the palms glow. Another mistake: thinking Plockton is “on Skye”—it’s not, it’s the mainland preview; if you rush to the bridge you miss the village point. Food: the café on Innes Street does a plum loaf slice for £3.50, better than the inn’s £6 cake. Worth it? Yes as a 90-minute pre-Skye decompression; the palms are a trick of Gulf Stream, not a film set, and that’s why it works. If you only want munros, skip. Question: does a palm-lined Highland village feel like a cop-out, or is the Gulf Stream microclimate exactly what makes Plockton worth the stop before Skye?

The August weather in Scotland was exactly as overcast and chilly as you’d expect, but that only added to the drama and beauty of the landscape. Driving through Glencoe, the mountains looked almost surreal shrouded in the mist. Since I always travel with my stomach leading the way, I made sure we took proper food breaks. The absolute highlight was the Blair Athol Distillery for a warming dram of whisky. It was the perfect remedy after a long, brisk walk along Loch Ness (sadly, no monster sightings—just a whole lot of mysterious fog!). We even made it all the way to the Isle of Skye. The cliffs at Neist Point were absolutely breathtaking, though man, was it windy! Fortunately, we found a super cozy local pub afterward where I tucked into a piping hot fish soup. I’m back in Gothenburg now, feeling a bit worn out but incredibly happy.

Ready to ditch the Scottish crowds, but still want the must-see landscapes? From Spean Bridge’s heroic memorials to Isle of Skye’s windswept statues, every stop is a slice of Scotland’s quieter, wilder side. Top Spots to Visit for a Crowd-Free, Epic Scotland: 1. Spean Bridge - Commando Memorial (PH34 4EG): Open 24/7, this peaceful site honors WWII commandos. Grab a misty sunrise pic with Ben Nevis in the background. 2. Ben Nevis Viewpoint (B8004, PH34 4EG): A quick roadside stop, rarely crowded, with dramatic Highland vistas (cloudy or sunny, it’s always stunning). 3. Glenfinnan Viaduct & Viewpoint (PH37 4LT): Visit early or just before sunset to get that classic ‘Harry Potter train’ shot minus selfie sticks. 4. Isle of Skye - Collie and MacKenzie Statue (IV47 8SW): Appreciate local legends, and walk along the Sligachan Old Bridge for those atmospheric stone-bridge-over-stream photos. 5. #uktrip The most photographed fortress in the Scottish Highlands 📸 Eilean Donan is the castle everyone recognizes from the movies. Sitting at the junction of three sea lochs, it looks its absolute best from the roadside lookout. This is the spot to catch the perfect reflection of the stone bridge in the water. For those who savour a long walk with views across the estuary and a trek through forest and higher moor land I recommend two circular walks either side of the bridge. They can be done separately as short walks if pushed for time or if you are up for a more energetic walk the Plock and Kyleakin Loop can be completed in about 3 hours. Stout walking shoes or hiking boots recommended as the terrain particularly near the beach or in coastal areas can be uneven underfoot. Walking poles will aid your balance on paths with steep ascents and descents. The Plock is a small stretch of coastal area with lots of paths to explore. It's a haven for wildlife. This is the place to look for Otters. Take a stroll through the wild flower meadows or explore hidden rocky coves. The beaches are quite wild and require good footing. The Plock is a great place to explore. It is owned by the Kyle and Lochalsh Community Trust who have developed access for the benefit of locals and visitors alike. Terrain Straightforward walking; the short loop near the start is an all-abilities path; parts of the other paths are less formal and can be boggy in places.

#holidayitinerary Looking for a hike that feels straight out of a movie? 🎬 Glen Elchaig in the Scottish Highlands is your dream come true — remote, raw, and ridiculously beautiful. 💦 Loch Mullardoch Start your adventure by this glassy lake surrounded by dramatic peaks. It’s the perfect base for day hikes or multi-day treks. Bring a flask of tea and just soak in the silence. 🌊 Falls of Glomach One of the tallest waterfalls in Scotland, tucked away in a lush, remote gorge. Reaching it takes effort (around 6–8 hours round trip), but the roaring cascade in the wild landscape is unreal — total movie scene vibes. ⛰️ Beinn Fhada If you crave altitude, this one’s for you. A Munro (over 900m) offering panoramic views of Glen Elchaig and beyond. #holidayitinerary On the 10th day of our UK journey, we reached the magical Isle of Skye and spent three days and two nights immersed in the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Driving across Skye Bridge, we headed straight for Neist Point, famed for its dramatic cliffs and iconic lighthouse — it even graced the cover of Lonely Planet UK! The wind was intense (literally blowing us sideways), so do dress warmly and tread carefully. Day 2 brought us to the mystical Fairy Glen, best visited early for easier parking and clean photo ops. Then came the Quiraing, where we took the shorter loop — a stunning yet physically demanding trail, especially in gale-force winds. After that, Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls offered the perfect quick stop for scenic photos. Sadly, Old Man of Storr was cut short by a sudden hailstorm! Driving in Skye is a breeze with courteous passing etiquette, though many roads are single-lane. We left the island via a CalMac ferry — booking online in advance is a must during summer. Though the weather was unpredictable, Skye’s wild charm made it all worthwhile. #travel #trip #uk #staycation #thingstodo #myitinerary

Escaping the scorching heat and concrete jungle of Ankara right after graduation for the Scottish Highlands was exactly what I needed. Since I'm a huge fan of nature and hiking, I tailored my entire itinerary around it. I trekked quite a lot over the four days; my feet were definitely aching, but it was totally worth it. On the first day, after touching down in Edinburgh, I spent some time exploring the city. The next day, we headed out to Loch Lomond and the Glencoe Valley. Glencoe is an incredibly vast and serene valley, and I hiked the trails around the Three Sisters peaks. The weather was a bit gloomy with a light drizzle, but it was absolutely perfect for a hike. From there, we made our way to the foothills of Ben Nevis, which happens to be the highest peak in the UK. Since I'm used to mountain trekking, the climbing route didn't exhaust me at all, and the views were simply stunning. The following day, we visited the world-famous Loch Ness. The loch is massive, but honestly, it was way too crowded with tourists. Everyone seems to flock there because of the monster legend, which felt a bit overhyped to me. Later that same day, we crossed over to the Isle of Skye and I hiked around the Old Man of Storr and the nearby waterfalls. The natural landscape here is hands down much better; the rocky trails are practically made for hiking. Of course, the weather up there can turn nasty in the blink of an eye, so packing a lightweight raincoat is a lifesaver. On our final day, we explored Stirling Castle and the town of St Andrews. Historical castles aren't exactly my vibe—I'm more of a lush greenery and mountains kind of person—but the view from the castle was actually pretty decent. I took a breezy walk along the beach at St Andrews; the sea was really choppy and freezing. Just a few quick tips if you're planning to go: I brought a three-prong UK travel adapter, which came in super handy. As for the food, they serve their famous fish and chips drenched in vinegar. It tasted a little weird to me, but you can scarf it down when you're starving. Even though I visited in August, it was still pretty chilly. The windbreaker and light jackets I packed were absolute lifesavers. That pretty much wraps up the trip, and now I'm back in Ankara.

A bridge now connects the Isle of Skye to the mainland. The Kyleakin Loop provides an excellent introduction to the Isle of Skye and the surrounding area. Starting at the Backpackers hostel you can follow the path alongside the estuary keeping the bridge in view. Once you reach the roundabout at the top turn left and the path makes its ascent through woodland. It's a pleasant circular walk, moderately challenging with views of the Skye Bridge, the village of Kyleakin and the Cullin mountains . You can also see the Torridon Mountains in the distance. The walk is 3 km in distance and takes about an hour to complete. The trail can be rugged in places so stout walking shoes and or hiking boots are advisable. This walk is seen as an excellent introduction for first time visitors to the Isle of Skye.

On arrival at the Kyle of Lochalsh I took a bus to the Isle of Skye. It's a couple of miles to the youth hostel aka Skye Backpackers. This hostel offers value for money accommodation to the independent traveller. I wasn't there long enough to explore the island in its entirety but this trip served as a good introduction to Skye and its outstanding natural beauty and breath taking scenery.
