Scotland surpassed all our expectations from the start. We were greeted by warm, friendly locals, and each town boasted its own distinct charm, surrounded by stunning landscapes. For incredible scenery, rich history, delicious food, and genuine kindness, Scotland is an unparalleled destination. Our adventure began in Edinburgh, exploring Edinburgh Castle, admiring the Crown Jewels, wandering through St. Giles' Cathedral, and strolling along the Royal Mile. A delightful surprise was crafting custom loose-leaf tea at Napier’s Herbalist, followed by a fantastic dinner at First Coast. Meeting Ally, our guide, was an absolute highlight. His passion and local knowledge opened doors to a side of Scotland rarely seen by tourists, turning our vacation into something extraordinary. In St. Andrews, we enjoyed the Himalayas putting course—one of us even managed a hole-in-one!—explored cathedral ruins, toured the university once attended by Mary, Queen of Scots, and relished a phenomenal toastie sandwich. Another unforgettable moment was our time in Pittenweem, where we braved a cold plunge into the tidal pool overlooking the North Sea. Spotting a seal during the swim made the experience even more thrilling. Driving through the Highlands felt like a journey through a postcard. Every turn revealed another breathtaking view. We visited Highland cows, had tea at the Fife Arms Hotel, explored Glamis Castle, discovered ancient Pictish stones, walked serene glens, and picnicked in quaint villages. A private bagpipe lesson with Hamish Moore gave us insight into the history and global influence of bagpipes. Walking along the River Tay in Dunkeld and hiking The Hermitage offered stunning waterfalls, majestic trees, and serene trails, making us truly appreciate Scotland’s beauty. Back in Edinburgh, attending a Scotland rugby match at Murrayfield Stadium was unforgettable—the thrilling atmosphere, Scotland’s victory, and the hilarity of walking two miles back to our hotel remain cherished memories. Our trip took an unexpected turn when our flight was canceled, giving us one extra day in Edinburgh. We embraced the change, sipping coffee at local cafés, browsing Toppings Bookstore, enjoying Everyman Cinema, savoring Italian food, and indulging in last-minute shopping. Delayed flights also led to two unplanned nights in New York City, reminding us how travel’s best moments often come from the unforeseen. For anyone planning a trip to Scotland: take your time. Go beyond Edinburgh and Glasgow. Wander through villages, drive scenic back roads, explore the Highlands, hike coastal paths, swim in tidal pools, and connect with locals.
