Online sources often describe summer in Cuba (June, July, August) as a hot, humid, and rainy season ⛈️ We visited Cuba twice, in June 2024 and 2025. During this time, the air temperature ranged from +25 to +35°C. On both occasions, the rains were brief, occurring in the evening and lasting 20-30 minutes, approximately once every 3-4 days.☔️ Sometimes, we barely noticed them. Therefore, I can confidently say that this "rainy season" is not a reason to cancel your trip, unlike in Asia, where rains can persist for a week. ‼️ From November to March, there is a chance of encountering the Portuguese man-of-war in the ocean. This is not a jellyfish but a siphonophore (a colony of organisms) whose stings are extremely painful and dangerous. They have long tentacles (up to 30-50 meters!) that can be almost invisible in the water. Even a dead man-of-war washed ashore retains its venom for several days. Contact with them causes: · Intense, burning, shooting pain. · Red blisters on the skin. 🌪️ Online sources also mention frequent storms during the summer. In both of our June trips, there were no storms, just a calm azure ocean. Humidity 💦 in June is indeed high; clothes don’t dry, the heat feels more intense, and breathing becomes harder. However, if you’re a tourist who spends the entire vacation lying on the beach under an umbrella, moving only between the bar and the ocean, it’s quite bearable. For an active vacation with excursions, the weather could be challenging, but we managed! We cooled off in bars or in air-conditioned cars during trips between locations, which is something to consider for long journeys. 🌞 The tourist season in Cuba is considered to be during the winter months. However, as our guide explained, this is the tourist season because Cuba is warm year-round, and the influx of tourists increases during winter. Traveling independently might not be safe, but taking a guided tour from Varadero in a minivan with air conditioning is a great option to explore this colorful and vibrant city. We liked Trinidad the most. What kind of city is it? It is the capital of the province of Sancti Spiritus. It is located on the coast in the southern part of the island, near Puerto de Casilda Bay in the Caribbean Sea. Together with the Valle de los Ingenios, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. Trinidad is often called an "open-air museum" due to its well-preserved colonial buildings. Attractions include: 📌 Plaza Mayor (main square). It houses several architectural monuments with museums where you can learn about the history of Cuba before the Spanish conquest. The square features a park with palm trees and benches, as well as the Church of the Holy Trinity, a late 19th-century church with a high nave, chapels, and arches. 📌 Church of the Holy Trinity. Inside, you can see a wooden altar and a 13th-century statue of Jesus Christ. 📌 Palacio Brunet. A yellow, two-story mansion from the early 19th century with blue-painted doors, windows, and a wooden balcony. It now houses the Romantic Museum. 📌 And most importantly, the beautiful streets are a must-see. Overall, it's worth setting aside one day to visit Trinidad. This city will definitely be unforgettable.

We have been to Cuba twice and would like to share our thoughts on whether it is worth visiting Cuba and Havana. Havana is an open-air museum: colonial architecture, 1950s retro cars, no outdoor advertising, open house doors, street musicians. It feels like stepping into the mid-20th century. The Capitol (a replica of Washington's). For just $20 per person, we got inside and, thanks to a Russian-speaking guide, learned a lot of interesting facts. Additionally, Revolution Square, the Grand Theater, the Malecon promenade, La Fuerza fortress, and Hemingway's house-museum all contribute to the city's unique charm. And, of course, Cuba's main attraction is its people. They are open, friendly, and eager to communicate. However, you should be very cautious—some of these friendly people are keen to help and earn money from tourists, which can spoil the impression of the city. In conclusion, Havana is a city for those seeking experiences, history, and local color rather than a beach getaway. If you are ready to endure some inconveniences for a unique experience, the trip will meet your expectations. And best of all, Yovanna Casa has an information booklet for Koreans! This book is filled with helpful tips from people who have actually stayed here. I approached from Holguín city by shared taxi to Moa road junction (CUP 200), then a 4WD colectivo the last 18 km of unpaved track (CUP 500, negotiated, no fixed schedule). All entry needs a CITMA permit plus a licensed guide—arranged in Holguín through a state agency, roughly CUP 2,000/day guide + CUP 10 park fee, cash only, no foreign cards. The trail from the lower guard post to Pico Cristal (1,231 m) is a 6–8 hour cloud-forest push: mossy elfin woodland, serpentine scrub, orchids, and zero signage—without a guide you are lost in 200 m. I only did the half-day version to the coffee finca ruins on the western slope, where 1950s Cuban Arabica terraces still stand overgrown, and the mist rolls in by 11 am. Pico Mogote, the karst tower to the south, is a separate permit zone near Santiago de Cuba, not walkable from Cristal in a day. Mistake I made: trusting the “3G works in the valley” rumor—there is no signal past the guard post; tell someone your return time. Bring CUP cash, not EUR/USD (no exchange at the gate), plus a water filter (streams are brown but drinkable filtered). My family and I spent a week at this hotel in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. For me and my two children, it was our first visit to the country, though my wife had been there 20 years ago and lived in Punta Cana for eight months. This visit to such a wonderful nation, one famous for its vibrant Caribbean musical culture, the warmth of its people, their kindness, hospitality, joy, and humility, has left an unforgettable impression. Now I understand why, while working in hotels in Varadero, Cuba, some foreign friends would share positive opinions about Dominican Republic’s tourist facilities and overall experiences, but today, it’s my turn to share my perspective, and it lives up to all I’ve heard. The “4 days 3 nights in Cuba” includes one day for arrival and one day for departure, leaving only two full days to explore. Of course, there are many ways to arrange the trip, but I chose one day in the city and one day in the countryside. I enjoy the leisurely charm of the wild, love capturing pastoral scenes, and of course, I’m drawn to the secluded exotic atmosphere. I devoted my only full day in the countryside entirely to the Viñales Valley. The car left Havana’s colorful old walls behind and headed west toward the red earth, sinking into the quiet of the mountains and fields. This valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site, where limestone karst peaks rise above the plains like giant green haystacks sprouting from the flat valley floor, earning it the nickname “Cuba’s Little Guilin.” From a high vantage point, the view is lush green, with red soil stretching into the distance. Tropical plants grow thickly, and thatched-roof farmhouses dot the landscape, painting a pastoral scene that has lasted for centuries. In Cuba, cigars are more than just a product; they are a culture deeply woven into local life. At a traditional tobacco farm, the owner greeted us. Under his wide-brimmed hat, his hands were calloused from years of working with tobacco leaves. He patiently explained the cigar-making process: picking, drying, fermenting, rolling—each leaf carefully aged over time. The most captivating part was watching the hand-rolling of cigars. With skilled hands, he blended and pressed the leaves layer by layer, finally wrapping them in an outer leaf to form the cigar. He said the government buys 90% of the farm’s high-quality tobacco to make famous cigars sold worldwide; the remaining 10% they use to make their own unbranded “private-label cigars.” Cuban cigars are often regarded as the pinnacle of tobacco, an irreplaceable benchmark in the industry. Many compare Cuban cigars to Maotai in liquor or Hermès in leather goods. “El General,” “Romeo y Julieta,” “Cohiba,” “Montecristo”—the variety of cigars gave me a vivid introduction to the world of cigars right at the production site. A fellow traveler, using a weak network connection, sent a live video back to Shanghai, where a cigar enthusiast immediately asked him to buy some. Priced at $10 each, they bargained down to $8 and bought 40 cigars across five varieties. This ordinary mountain trade was more than just a transaction; it captured the quiet moments of the Cuban valley and its rich local culture. Beyond the countryside and tobacco farm, there is another breathtaking cultural wonder—prehistoric murals. Unlike artifacts carefully preserved in museums, these murals blend directly with nature and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. In 1961, Cuban artist Leovigildo González followed the contours of the limestone cliffs and spent four years painting a grand story of life’s evolution in bold, rough strokes of red, yellow, blue, and green. From ancient marine creatures and dinosaurs to giant ground sloths and early humans, the 120-meter-long mural flows like a river of time spanning millions of years. It mimics the rock art style of Cuba’s indigenous Taíno people, serving as both a visual narrative of evolution and a profound tribute to the cultural roots of this land. At noon, the sun shines on the dinosaur images, the pigments glinting with mineral luster, as if echoing from ancient times. A day spent rushing through the mountains and fields was half about the natural openness of distant peaks and empty mountains, half about the lingering fragrance of local culture and history—together, they carved the richest, most lasting memories of my trip to Cuba.

Before coming to Cuba, all the articles I read described “beautiful Havana.” Once here, I realized it is even more beautiful than imagined, and this beauty is perfectly preserved by time. Before coming to Cuba, the information I heard spoke of “the hardships of Cubans.” Only by truly entering their lives did I realize the hardships run deeper than expected. But here, I saw something stronger than hardship — an optimism woven into their blood, a broad-mindedness shaped by trials, a freedom and ease that defy definition. The best way to understand Havana is to stroll through its squares. The “old” here is not decay but elegance wrapped in time, as if the entire city exists in another era. Revolution Square: an era’s belief engraved in the sky Che Guevara, who never held the highest power, has a 30-meter-tall portrait. The impact is not political but a global visual symbol — representing rebellion, idealism, and the spirit of freedom❷. The portrait covers the entire Ministry of the Interior building. The black steel outlines sharply contrast with the concrete walls. Minimalist techniques highlight his determination, focus, and resilience. The five-pointed star on his beret, his furrowed brow, and his gaze into the distance are distilled into a recognizable spiritual totem, also known as the most replicated image worldwide (see image ⓳). Plaza de San Francisco: kindness polished by time Next to the harbor, Plaza de San Francisco was once a hub of wealth and goods. Three sculptures are visible at a glance (images ❹❺❻⓮). Especially the “robe-clad gentleman” (bottom of image ❼), whose beard, fingertips, and shoe tops are polished shiny by people rubbing them for luck and romance. This is not just a landmark but a lasting gesture telling people: no matter how the world changes, some warm comforts are always within reach. Plaza de las Armas: fighting gloom with color and dignity This green-filled place feels more like a park. The most touching sight is not the baroque dome or the weathered stone walls but an elderly woman wrapped in vibrant colors sitting under a tree (cover photo). She holds a cigar with the skill of wielding a scepter. The curling smoke is not decay but a silent declaration: no matter how hard life is, no one can take away this moment’s composure and dignity. I marveled at this unfiltered vitality. When I pointed my camera at her, she simply returned my gaze calmly. With each shutter click, I suddenly understood: this beauty is not a performance but a life force growing from the bone (images ⓭⓲). Old Square: absurdity is life’s remedy Around Old Square, carved arcades and weathered walls frame the scene like ancient paintings. In the shifting light and shadow, I found a fortune teller in a blue dress (bottom of image ❿). She didn’t seem to be soliciting business but waiting for fate in the maze-like streets. The cards in her hand might be another absurd yet charming remedy Cubans use to face life’s uncertainties. There is also a famous bronze statue of a man riding a chicken (top of image ❼). What I saw was not grotesque but the Cuban attitude toward hardship — even with material scarcity, the feast of the spirit never ends. The “five-cent bar” next to Cathedral Square: a toast across time and space Photos and countless visitor signatures cover the bar’s walls like a thick patina of modern society⓫⓬. All of this traces back to the American old-timer who loved his drink — Hemingway. Here is one of his famous quotes: “My mojito is at the five-cent bar.” I have been to his Miami home, and now I order a mojito mixed with rum and mint, as if to clink glasses across time with the tough guy who once stood at the bar drinking. At dusk, the engine of the rose-red vintage car we rode in (bottom of image ⓳) gradually quieted. The Caribbean Sea was dyed violet (image ⓴). I recalled a saying: life must go on, but it should be lived with a touch of poetry.

#kindnessontheroad The Ciénaga de Zapata (Zapata Swamp) is Cuba’s largest wetland and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. I joined a tour from Playa Larga into the heart of the swamp, specifically the Laguna del Tesoro (Treasure Lake). Our guide, Roberto, was a wiry man who seemed to melt into the mangroves. We piled into a narrow, flat-bottomed boat—no life jackets in sight, a stark reminder of Cuba’s resource constraints. As we glided through the dark, tannin-stained water, the silence was broken only by the occasional splash of a Cuban crocodile. Roberto stood at the stern, using a long bamboo pole not just to propel us, but to poke the banks, checking for soft spots or lurking reptiles. At one point, a large croc slid into the water mere feet from our boat. I instinctively flinched, but Roberto calmly held the pole between us and the predator, his eyes never leaving the water. "They are more afraid of us... unless you smell like food," he joked dryly. He explained how the crocodiles were once hunted nearly to extinction for their hides but are now protected. His expertise allowed us to observe a nest of hatchlings without disturbing them—a privilege that felt both thrilling and deeply responsible. Practical Advice: Tours to Zapata typically cost 25-35 CUC (Cuban Convertible Pesos) or their equivalent in the newer Cuban Peso (CUP) system—always clarify currency beforehand. Bring insect repellent (the mosquitos are ferocious) and wear long sleeves. There are no ATMs in the swamp; bring enough cash for the tour, tips (10-15% is appreciated for skilled guides like Roberto), and snacks. A major mistake is underestimating the heat and humidity; drink plenty of water. The road to Playa Larga is decent, but a rental car (preferably a sturdy Russian Lada or similar) gives you flexibility. Remember, photos are fine, but drones are often prohibited to protect wildlife. Discussion Point: How do you handle situations where safety equipment (like life jackets) isn't provided in adventure tourism? Does it enhance the "authenticity" or just increase anxiety?

The world doesn’t shrink because you’re afraid, but it grows because you’re brave. Step forward, and the unfamiliar turns into stories. Dare to pursue, and everything paints into a poetic shadow. Cuba holds a place in my heart much like these two travel “golden quotes.” Describing my conflicted feelings as “anxious” and “fearless” fits perfectly. Long dreamed of, with constant encouragement. Havana! I finally came. The World Cup is a promise kept, and travel is a commitment, an obsession. Visa-free entry for Chinese travelers to Cuba was expected, but filling out an electronic customs declaration form three days before arrival was no easy task. This trip, combining watching games in Monterrey, Mexico, and traveling to Cuba, was quite complicated. Flying back to Cancun before heading to Cuba was unavoidable, and the only flight at 6:45 AM added to the trip’s heaviness. There are still too few Chinese travelers. At check-in, the Mexican airline staff was unfamiliar with the Cuban customs QR code on my phone since my passport had no visa. Waiting for immigration’s response made us the last two to board. The flight from Cancun to Havana is truly a short hop. This international flight almost landed without cruising. Cuba’s thorough security check for all arrivals is another unique feature. Only after getting into the car sent by Trip.com did my facial muscles finally relax. Due to the low number of tourists, hotel check-in was completed by 10 AM. Opening the glass door to the balcony on the 10th floor, the sea, palm trees, dilapidated buildings, graffiti, colorful houses, and old cars all burst with Spanish colonial charm. Every weathered detail seemed to tell me: time here doesn’t pass, it accumulates. Looking down, an avenue stretches left and right, one end leading to the Capitol, the other connecting to the seaside boulevard. This is Prado Avenue, built in 1772, Havana’s first paved street and its first European-style tree-lined avenue. Baroque and neoclassical colonial buildings line both sides, including the Havana Grand Theater, Sevilla Hotel, and the Palace of Marriage. The middle of the avenue is a pedestrian street with stone benches on both sides where locals often relax, and many young people enjoy hanging out and playing games. Notably, in 2016, Chanel held its 2017 early spring resort fashion show on Prado Avenue. This was the first fashion show by a European luxury brand in Cuba since the 1959 revolution, drawing huge attention in both the fashion world and Cuban society. That day, over 170 colorful vintage convertibles chauffeured guests, turning the avenue into a kilometer-long runway. Prado Avenue is the heart of Havana’s old town and was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2021 as part of the “landscape of art and science.” It’s this very street downstairs where Chanel’s show once told the world about Cuba’s “strangeness.” I, on the first day at sunset, turned Havana’s “warmth” into poetic imagery through the portraits I captured. At this moment, the golden chains of flowers drape in pale yellow, dyeing the entire street with flowing light. The blue-and-white colonial buildings are edged in gold by the sunset, and the breeze carries the sea’s salty moisture. Sitting on the stone bench steps, one person makes a relaxed gesture, another looks back at the camera, their smiles as open and warm as the sunlight here. Pressing the shutter, this is the magic of Prado Avenue. The girl’s especially sweet smile in photo 3 brings great comfort, helping unfamiliar travelers shed unease and guard; it also allows my distant lens to firmly capture the freshest warmth of this land.

I had an excellent experience at the Majestic Elegance. The hotel is stunning, the facilities are well-kept, and the rooms are spacious, very clean, and comfortable. The food was another highlight, offering a wide variety and great quality. I want to commend the staff at Majestic Elegance for their friendliness and ever-present smiles, truly enhancing the stay. Seeing the news that Meliá is closing all 34 of its hotels in Cuba truly breaks my heart. Over two consecutive years, I visited Cuba three times, drawn by that beautiful jelly-like sea and the rural villages I visited that were severely lacking in daily necessities. Every time I set foot there, I realized that once you have truly loved a place, you can never just let it go. The last time I went was this February, and I stayed at Meliá Internacional Varadero. I never imagined that stay would be my final encounter with it. When I left, I thought it was just a "see you next time," but I never expected that some goodbyes would come so suddenly, without even a chance to say a proper farewell. Because I speak Spanish, no matter where I went, I could fully experience the warmth and hospitality of the Cuban people through our wonderful exchanges and mutual understanding. Thinking back on it now, I realize that some scenery and people cannot be forgotten just because you have seen them. They live in your heart for a very long time—so long that just mentioning them brings tears to my eyes. Hearing the news of Meliá leaving, I cannot imagine how many more people in Cuba, a country already reliant on tourism, will lose their jobs, or how the already difficult life in Cuba will continue. Behind those hotels are the lives of ordinary people, the income of countless families, and the hope they cling to as they persevere. I worry that more familiar hotels will close in the future, and I worry that one day when I return, those familiar names, familiar smiles, and the villages I visited with gifts will only exist in my memories. The people and places I once thought I would see again have, in an unguarded moment, quietly turned into a final goodbye. Some places are enough to visit once in a lifetime, but not Cuba. Cuba is the place that made me visit three times in two years, a place I still miss, still ache for, and still fall silent over when I flip through photos at night. May Cuba be well, may the jelly-like sea remain blue, and may the places and people that once brightened our journeys not be truly taken away by time. And I hope that one day, we will meet again.
