Cheb, a border town with a blend of Bohemian and German influences
Historical Sites and Classic Architecture:
Chebský hrad: A 12th-century Holy Roman Empire castle built by Frederick I the Redbeard. The Black Tower and the extremely rare Two-story Chapel are must-see highlights.
Špalíček Half-timbered Buildings: The most prominent landmark on King George Square (Náměstí Krále Jiřího z Poděbrad) in the city center, consisting of two groups of 11 Gothic half-timbered houses that have survived to the 13th century, offering a unique architectural style.
Historical Events and Old Town Atmosphere:
General Albrecht von Wallenstein was assassinated here during the Thirty Years' War. The Cheb Museum (Muzeum Cheb) next to the square details this history and the town's development.
Surrounded by old Baroque and Gothic buildings, the square is perfect for finding a café with outdoor seating to relax.
Local Cuisine and Casual Experiences:
Besides traditional Czech eateries (where you can enjoy affordable Czech roasted pork knuckle and beer), the town, due to its border location, also boasts many long-established, affordable, and high-quality Vietnamese restaurants (such as the classic beef pho, Pho Bo), which enjoy excellent local reputations.
Travel Tips:
It's only about a 15-20 minute drive from both Mariá Thermal Baths and Franzschäker Thermal Baths. The Old Town is charming, with convenient parking, making it perfect for a leisurely half-day stroll and dining, or as an excellent side trip on a West Bohemian town tour.
