Budget-friendly September trips that won't break the bank—I've tested these, and they're truly affordable
September to October is the golden window for budget travel. The summer crowds have faded, flight and hotel prices have softened, the north is crisp and cool, and the south hasn't gotten too cold yet. I've selected 8 places I've visited myself; none are expensive per person, but you won't miss out on the sights or the food. Let me be clear: low cost doesn't mean compromising. The key is knowing where to spend your money.
1️⃣ Zibo | Shandong
Don't just focus on the barbecue when visiting Zibo.
⏰ Arrive at Zhoucun Ancient Mall before 10:00 AM. The streets are less crowded, and the freshly baked sesame seed cakes are 5 yuan each—much tastier than waiting in line in the afternoon.
📍 There's an old dye house in the middle of the Ancient Mall street with blue calico fabric hanging all over the courtyard; it's free to take photos. After you're done, head out the north gate, and it's a 10-minute walk to the local wet market, where fruit is half the price of the tourist spots.
⚠️ A quick tip: lines at the barbecue city can reach two hours on weekends. If you want to save time, go on a weekday, or have skewers for lunch and save the evening for the Ancient Mall's night view. For accommodation, choose Zhangdian District; budget hotels are around 150 yuan a night, and a taxi to Zhoucun is only about 30 yuan.
Suitable for students and short weekend trips. It's cool in the mornings and evenings in September and October, so bring a light jacket, but you can still wear short sleeves at noon.
2️⃣ Nanping | Fujian
Wuyishan is a place where you can enjoy a layered experience even on a budget.
🚄 Take the high-speed train to Wuyishan North Station, then take a bus to the resort area—it only costs a few yuan, so don't listen to the touts at the station exit.
The Nine-Bend Stream bamboo raft is the main event, but the ticket isn't cheap. To save money, choose the last raft of the afternoon; the light hitting the stream at an angle is much better than at noon. It takes about an hour to hike up Tianyou Peak; if you have trouble walking, going halfway is enough, and the view from the top is definitely worth it.
🍜 For food, go to the old street outside the resort area; "guangbing" (flatbread) and smoked goose are sold by the portion and are 30% cheaper than inside the scenic area. For accommodation, don't stay at the riverside guesthouses; walk one kilometer south, and the price is cut in half.
⚠️ September and October are great times for Wuyishan, but there's a large temperature difference between morning and evening, and it's chilly on the raft, so bring a windbreaker.
3️⃣ Kaifeng | Henan
Kaifeng's attractions are very concentrated, making it perfect for a two-day, one-night trip.
⏰ Go to Millennium City Park in the evening; the night performances have more character than the daytime ones, and once the lights come on, the whole park looks like it has a new face.
Iron Pagoda Park and Baogong Temple are close to each other and can be visited on the same morning. You can't climb to the top of the Iron Pagoda, so just looking at the glazed bricks from below is enough. Daxiangguo Temple is popular for incense; don't rush to buy incense at the entrance, as you can get it for free inside.
🍜 Gulou Night Market is a highlight, but it's also the easiest place to go over budget. Soup dumplings are sold by the steamer; one steamer plus a bowl of spicy soup is enough for two people.
⚠️ Prices vary greatly among night market stalls, so take a walk around before you buy, and don't fill up at the first stall.
Suitable for those on a tight budget who still want to eat well. Buses can cover almost all attractions, and the daily fare is less than 10 yuan.
4️⃣ Honghe | Yunnan
Yuanyang Rice Terraces and Jianshui Ancient Town—one is for looking at the sky, the other for observing people.
⏰ In September and October, the terraces start to be irrigated. At sunrise, the sea of clouds surges; get a spot at the Duoyishu viewing platform before 6:00 AM.
Jianshui Ancient Town is much slower-paced.
📍 Walk to the end of Lin'an Road to find Chaoyang Tower, where locals play chess downstairs in the evening. The ticket for Zhu Family Garden isn't expensive, but the courtyard is deep and easy to get lost in, so follow the signs.
🍜 Jianshui grilled tofu is sold by the piece—0.5 yuan each—so sit at a small stall and grill it yourself. Caoya rice noodles are a local specialty; have a bowl for breakfast.
🚄 There are bullet trains from Kunming to Jianshui, taking just over an hour. Yuanyang doesn't have a train station; it takes about three hours by bus from Jianshui.
⚠️ The distance between the terrace viewing platforms is far; chartering a car costs about 200 yuan a day, but carpooling is more cost-effective.
Suitable for photography enthusiasts and those who aren't in a rush. There's less rain in September and October, but it's cold in the mountains in the mornings and evenings, so bring warm clothes.
5️⃣ Chengdu | Sichuan
These places around Chengdu are perfect for budget travel. Tiantai Mountain is great for escaping the summer heat; in September and October, there are fewer people, tickets are cheap, and walking around the stream is very comfortable.
Mount Qingcheng and Dujiangyan are next to each other and can be combined into a one-day trip.
⏰ Hike the front mountain of Mount Qingcheng in the morning, and go to Dujiangyan to see the Fish Mouth in the afternoon.
⚠️ The back mountain of Mount Qingcheng is better for hiking, but don't push yourself if you're not in great shape.
Anren Ancient Town is free to enter; the tram on the old street charges a separate fee, so you don't have to ride it. You need to go to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding early; ⏰ get in as soon as it opens at 7:30 AM. Pandas are active in the morning, and they're basically sleeping after 10:00 AM.
🍜 Eat a bowl of dan dan noodles in the city before you set off; food in the scenic area is expensive and mediocre.
🚄 There are intercity trains to Dujiangyan, taking half an hour from Xipu Station. Suitable for families or friends traveling together; you can get around by bus and walking.
6️⃣ Zunyi | Guizhou
In Chishui Danxia, the water volume is still sufficient in September and October, and the waterfalls are beautiful.
⏰ Go to Sidonggou in the morning; the light filters through the trees, and you can see small rainbows in the mist.
The climb to Foguangyan is a bit steep; if you have bad knees, go halfway and turn back.
🚄 There are buses from Zunyi to Chishui, taking about three hours, but driving yourself is more flexible.
⚠️ There's little food in the scenic area, so bring your own water and dry food. Choose accommodation in Chishui city; you can find a clean place for just over 100 yuan. Don't stay at the entrance of the scenic area; it's expensive and noisy.
Suitable for those who love natural scenery and don't want to spend a lot of money. There's less rain in September and October, but the mountain roads are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes.
7️⃣ Baoding | Hebei
These spots in Baoding are spread out, so you'll need to pick and choose. The Western Qing Tombs are best in the morning; there are few people, lots of trees, and the stone paths are quiet. The glass skywalk at Baishi Mountain charges an extra fee; don't force yourself if you're afraid of heights, as the mountain itself is worth seeing.
Yesanpo and Anxin Baiyangdian are at opposite ends and can't be done in one day.
⏰ The lotus flowers in Baiyangdian are at the end of their season in September; taking a boat into the reed marshes is very comfortable when the breeze blows.
⚠️ There are different types of boat tickets; large boats are cheaper, while small boats are more expensive but flexible. Make sure to calculate the cost per person before boarding.
🍜 Have donkey meat burgers in Baoding city for breakfast; eat them while they're hot.
🚄 It's a half-hour high-speed train ride from Beijing to Baoding, suitable for short weekend trips. Suitable for traveling with elderly people or children, but the attractions are scattered, so driving is recommended.
8️⃣ Turpan | Xinjiang
September and October are perfect for Turpan; the grapes are ripe, and the weather isn't as scorching as in summer.
⏰ Go to the Flaming Mountains in the afternoon; the surface temperature is still high, but the light hitting the red mountains makes for great photos.
Kumtag Desert is not far from the city; enter the desert in the evening, and ⏰ the sand turns golden at sunset. Camel riding costs extra, and it only takes 20 minutes to walk up.
🍜 Eat mixed noodles at a farmhouse in Grape Valley, paired with freshly picked grapes.
⚠️ Attractions in Turpan are scattered; chartering a car costs about 300 yuan a day, but carpooling is more economical. Buying individual tickets isn't cost-effective; check if there's a joint ticket available.
Suitable for those who aren't afraid of the sun and want to see some unique scenery. There's a large temperature difference in September and October, so wear a jacket in the morning and short sleeves at noon.
You won't regret visiting any of these eight places in September or October. Pick two or three to combine; you can keep your budget down without compromising the experience. Which one do you want to visit first?
