Milan is easy to associate with the Duomo, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and busy shopping streets, but I found a quieter side of the city by wandering without much of a plan. My first surprise was Villa Invernizzi in Porta Venezia. You can’t enter the private garden, but I stopped outside to peek through the gates and spotted the famous pink flamingos wandering around the pond. It was such an unexpected sight in the middle of Milan. Then I found Via Lincoln, a colorful little residential street often compared to Burano. The pastel houses, tiny gardens, and balconies made it feel completely different from the elegant Milan I had seen around the center. My favorite discovery was Casa Museo Boschi Di Stefano, a former home filled with more than 300 works of 20th century Italian art. Best of all, admission is free. After seeing Navigli and Brera, these quieter places gave me a different impression of Milan less polished, more local, and much more surprising. #milan #italy

My rule is to go local and eat whatever sounds a little strange – because that's the local specialty. I started with gnocco fritto – fried bread made into light, fluffy little dumplings. Half were topped with local ham, the other half with lard sourced from Carrara. Sounds odd? It tastes divine. (Carrara is famous for both its marble and its lardo – so this was a win.) Then came my first ever Risotto Milanese. Mamma mia! Every mouthful was a joy. Soft late-80s and early-90s rock music played on the radio, and I had the room to myself. 'Why?' I asked the waitress. Because it's holiday time, she explained – many businesses in the area close for the month because everyone goes away. After an hour of having the restaurant all to myself, two separate couples dropped in for lunch too. I ordered a coffee; the waitress gave it to me on the house. I gave a tip; she gave a free limoncello. But my main impression of this restaurant is happiness. I didn't check my phone or read my iPad. I just sat back in silence and enjoyed the experience. Tranquility, attentive service, and bite after bite of blissful food.
