On your first day on the plateau, avoid showering and strenuous exercise, drink plenty of water, and rest to reduce the risk of altitude sickness. My travel companion insisted on hiking to Kula Gangri on day one and ended up needing an oxygen tank — the whole trip showed the word "suffer" on her face. Don't trust cheap private car deals; they're likely to add charges halfway or change the route at the last minute. Book cars, hotels, and tickets through Ctrip for transparent pricing and peace of mind. Get your border permit in advance. You must obtain it before visiting Luozha, Cuona, or Lebu Gou. It's free to apply in your household registration area — just list "Shannan region." If you skip this step, border areas will be off-limits. ⚠️ I really don't recommend pushing an Aug trip to Sep — more rain, worse road conditions, and fewer photogenic days. But if you pick the right days in Aug, it's still unbelievably beautiful. 🍜 food picks (go for Tibetan flavors) Yak beef hot pot is a must 🥘. Thinly sliced fresh yak is tender and not dry, the broth is rich, and at about CNY 120 per person it warms you to the core. Also try Tibetan stone pot chicken — yak bone broth with local chicken and wild mushrooms; one sip on the plateau and your soul is restored. Don't miss Tibetan noodles and sweet tea for breakfast, about CNY 20 per person. The noodles are chewy and flavorful, and the sweet tea is creamy and sweet — a local daily staple. Butter tea, tsampa, yogurt with honey, and dried yak jerky are common at roadside Tibetan eateries — they get better the more you chew. In Zedang town, Zangjia Fish House serves Yarlung River fish in clear broth — insanely fresh! 🗺️ itinerary (classic 3 days 2 nights) Day 1: depart Lhasa, follow the Yarlung Tsangpo River downstream, and head straight for Yamdrok Lake. Stop at the Gangbala pass for a panoramic view — the lake's blue looks unreal. In the afternoon visit Samye Monastery, where the red, white, green, and black stupas are stunning. Overnight in Zedang town to rest and adapt to the altitude. Day 2: early morning rush to Yumbu Lhakhang, Tibet's first palace, and enjoy the view over the Yarlung River valley from the top. Lunch in Zedang with Tibetan curry soup and rice. In the afternoon drive to Yamdrok Lake and take in the full view from the Ruzila viewpoint, where the lake shifts through gradient blues with the light. Spend the evening in Langkazi County and fall asleep to the glow of the lake. Day 3: get up early to check out Pumo Yongcuo and view Kula Gangri reflecting in the lake; the water is crystal clear. Then visit Rituo Monastery — one island and one temple watch the edge of the world, serene and sacred. Return to Lhasa in the afternoon; look back on the road and you realize that paradise really does exist. Book cars, hotels, and tickets through Ctrip for the whole trip. In peak season accommodation prices can rise 30–50%, so book 1–2 months in advance for peace of mind. 📸 photo spots (phone cameras can still slay) Yamdrok Lake east shore ring road: stop anywhere — the lake has distinct layers and unreal blues. Ruzila viewpoint: the dream spot for a full view of Yamdrok Lake, gradient blue water with prayer flags makes for healing shots 🎏. Yumbu Lhakhang summit: shoot back toward the Yarlung River valley, with barley fields like a green carpet and the palace like a floating castle. Rituo Monastery: one island and one temple watching the edge of the world — intense solitude; wearing a red dress will make your photos legendary. Pumo Yongcuo Tuwa village: a cliffside temple plus a blue lake, like the end of the world. Kula Gangri snow mountains: a majestic 7,000 m–class massif, towering and magnificent; the sunlit golden peaks are breathtaking ❄️. 💡 best photo times: before 10 AM and at dusk, when the light is gentlest. It gets very windy by the lake — dress warmly for photos and avoid staying in the wind too long. If you come to Shannan in Aug, bring a windproof shell, a thin down jacket, sunglasses, a hat, a scarf, and pack an oxygen cylinder and rhodiola. Rainy-season Shannan has a moist gentleness — less of the harsh sun-baked ruggedness and more ethereal mist — if you stay calm, the trip is worth it 🏔️✨.

✅ Hello everyone, starting with this episode, I will share my previous self-drive guide from Guangzhou to Tibet. Last year, I drove over 20,000 km in Tibet, only missing a few border valleys. Most tourists only know the Ali grand loop, which shows a lack of understanding of Tibet. In terms of natural scenery, Shannan definitely surpasses the Ali route and offers a better self-drive experience. ✅ Starting from Lhasa, driving to Cuona, you’ll see rivers, deserts, earth forests, snow mountains, sea buckthorn forests, lakes, and vast grasslands. Of course, there are also cultural sites like Yongbulakang, the Tibetan king’s tomb, and Kajiu Monastery, which I’ve shared in previous notes. ✅ This time, I’m sharing a little-known lake on the way—Gecuo. Few have heard of it, and there are no online guides about it. Gecuo’s beauty is different from other lakes. It has grasslands, and its colors change with the seasons. To me, Gecuo is a lake with rich layers of color. . 🚗【Self-drive guide】 1⃣️ From Shannan to Cuona, just follow the Qiongcuo route. Avoid the blue route as it has narrow roads. 2⃣️ Gecuo is halfway along the way, next to the Zhegu grassland. 3⃣️ Zhegu Lake looks like a large lake on the map, but it has actually dried up. 4⃣️ You need to check your border pass before entering Cuona. 5⃣️ Along the Qiongcuo route, only Cuona has accommodation options. Of course, sleeping in a camper van is more convenient. 6⃣️ Except for the 4,800 m pass, the altitude elsewhere is similar to Yamdrok Lake. . ❤️【Tips】 1⃣️ Prepare your border pass in advance. It’s easier to get now. 2⃣️ Starting from Shannan city, you’ll pass four major attractions: Yongbulakang, the Tibetan king’s tomb, Gecuo, and Narirongcuo. ✅ In the previous note, I shared about Gecuo along the Shannan loop national highway in Tibet. I continued driving my sedan toward the border line and after about 1 hour arrived at Nari Yongcuo. This note shares how to explore Nari Yongcuo. ✅ If you are also taking this Tibetan Shannan loop to the Cuona border, you will pass Nari Yongcuo twice, once entering and once leaving. The scenery you capture each time will be different. The cover photo was taken on the way in. ✅ There is a small path at Nari Yongcuo (not easy to find) where you can drive directly to about 100 meters from the lakeside to take photos 📷. There are very few online guides for Nari Yongcuo, and I haven’t seen any bloggers share the photo spots. ✅ The lake water at Nari Yongcuo is actually bluer than in photos. It is surrounded by dry yellow grasslands. This blue is almost unreal. Some might say it’s filtered, but only those who have been there can truly understand. 👇 Below are 3 photo spots: ⭐️ Pass location On the way to Nari Yongcuo along G219, there are two left turns. The first one is not passable, so take the second left. On the road at the pass, you will see many sea buckthorn trees. After crossing the pass, a huge blue lake appears before you. On the road descending from the pass, there is a spot where you can pull over to take photos. ⭐️ Lakeside T intersection Go down the slope to the lakeside where there is a T intersection. The lake is right next to it. When I was there, construction vehicles were working and parking was not allowed. This spot is similar to the popular road in Wenbi Village, Dali. ⭐️ Lakeside The lakeside of Nari Yongcuo is all grassland, with a small path where you can drive down. A sedan has no problem here. This spot is best for morning photos with front lighting. All my photos were taken here. . ❤️ [Tips] 1⃣️ G560 national highway has a new road and an old road. You must take the new road to find the pass photo spot. 2⃣️ The pass location is best photographed in the afternoon for front lighting. 3⃣️ On the plateau, it usually gets windy and snows in the evening 🌨️. After shooting at the pass, it started snowing down by the lake. 4⃣️ Nari Yongcuo is very windy and cold, with snow-capped mountains nearby. Taking photos here requires great courage. 5⃣️ Free access, no restrictions. If you don’t mind the wind, you can camp overnight by the lake. ✅ This route is my Tibet Shannan grand loop. This is day 3 of the trip, after visiting Gecuo, Nariyongcuo, and Cuona along the way. ✅ Especially the Cuona loop along the border, descending from alpine grasslands to dense primeval forests, then climbing mountains again. The canyon landscape and waterfalls make the scenery picturesque all along the way 👍. ✅ Before leaving Cuona, we head toward Cuomei. On the way to Cuomei, the must-see is the sea buckthorn forest here, where you can witness what millennium-old sea buckthorn trees look like. ✅ There is no commercialization here, very few tourists, and few guides introducing this place. When I visited, I just happened to meet some cultural tourism staff, so there were more people. They said there might be an admission ticket 🎫 in the future. ✅ The sea buckthorn trees here are over a thousand years old, some reaching several thousand years. The tallest sea buckthorn tree is 15 meters high, and some trunks are 4.5 meters wide. You can check out the photos I took. . ⏰【Suggested visit time】 Recommended visit time is 2 hours. The altitude here is 4,300 meters. For overnight stays, you can choose to go to Lakang town, which is only 3,100 meters above sea level. . ❤️【Tips】 1⃣️ The scenic area has free admission. You can enter directly by passing through the house. 2⃣️ There is a parking lot. Parking is free. 🅿️ There are about 30 parking spaces. 3⃣️ The restroom is right next to the parking lot. 4⃣️ The sea buckthorn forest inside is very large. July in Shannan is truly an underrated treasure. People in Lhasa say, "You haven’t really touched Tibet until you’ve been to Shannan." I took a trip on my own this time and want to share the pitfalls I encountered and the sore hands from all the photos I took 🏔️ 🍜 First, the food—Zedang town is really worth it Tibetan yak beef hot pot is a must-try. The highland yak has firm fibers, and the wild mushroom broth is so fresh it makes your eyebrows jump. Around 80 per person, and you’ll be very full. If it’s your first time trying Tibetan blood sausage, prepare yourself mentally. When you cut through the crispy shell, it bursts with juice. Dipping it in wild chive flower sauce is seriously addictive. Street Tibetan noodles with sweet tea cost less than 20 total, a morning lifesaver for altitude sickness. Gongga Changguo’s red potato noodles are sticky, fragrant, and sweet. Yogurt mixed with sugar is the best way to cut the richness. To taste the "Little Jiangnan of Tibet" flavors, head to Lebu Valley. Stone pot chicken and Tibetan fragrant pork ribs are local specialties. You can walk into any Menba ethnic small restaurant without worry. 📸 For sightseeing in July, here are some tips Yamdrok Lake needs no hype. That shade of blue will leave you speechless. Tickets are 100. Visit viewing platform 5 and Rituo Monastery together since they’re on the way. Rituo Monastery is an island with a temple guarding the lake. The light before 10 AM is the gentlest. Wearing a white dress and standing there will nail the perfect nine-grid shot ☁️ Pumo Yong Lake is currently free. In July, the lake just melted clear, with wildflowers along the shore. The reflection of Kula Gangri snow mountain can be captured directly in the lake. It’s much less crowded than Yamdrok. Yongbulakang’s winding mountain road is perfect for upward shots. Tibet’s first palace sits atop Tashi Ci Ri mountain. Go an hour before sunset. The moment golden light sweeps down will leave you stunned. Samye Monastery blends Tibetan, Han, and Indian styles. Walking the prayer path is very peaceful. Lebu Valley drops to just over 2,000 meters, with primeval forest and waterfalls. When altitude sickness hits hard, go in there to refresh your lungs. Avoid Lamla Lake this season. July and August are rainy, and the snow peaks are often covered by clouds. Eight out of ten times you’ll be disappointed if you go just to see the "reflection of fate." Better to save your time for the other spots. 🏨 I tried two places to stay this time. Zedang is the base camp. The first night, to adapt to 3,700 meters altitude, I chose Hanting City Government branch. Room 304 has diffused oxygen, a humidifier, and screen casting.
